Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26 and half year reign of Manchester United came to end when he announced his retirement on May 8th 2013. The Scotsman had won his 13th Premier League title 2 weeks earlier. Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle & Gary Neville discussed the decision and where United would go from here.

Liverpool was in the same position after Dalglish stepped aside, the problem was Souness was an awful replacement and shook the foundation of the club which took them many years to recover from. 90% of the problems post SAF is Woodward. Had a half competent recruitment director been involved - Moyes would have picked up his targets that summer (Thiago/Fabregas/Baines) and who knows what would have happened. Instead he got deadline day Fellaini. It’s been the same story since to this day

In fairness to Moyes it’s not as if those that came afterwards up until Ole did a great deal better, expecting United to be exactly the same or near enough was never going to be the case. It’s not as if Moyes was a bad choice at the time anyway, Everton were pretty much firmly that team between the top 6 and the rest, fair play to Ferguson wanting to personally pick him, yes in the end it didn’t work out however I’d put that more down to the instant high expectations up top than Moyes himself.

To everyone who says that fergie picked moyes and you would’ve thought he’d pick a good manager: his picks were pep then mourinho. Moyes was because Pep left for Bayern and the other 4 managers (Van Ghaal eventually did flop at United) were all busy at other posts. So SAF didn’t choose Moyes. He wanted Pep and that would’ve been a good transition. Man United like to spend and so does Pep. He could’ve brought a dynasty and Klopp was also mentioned (but was unavailable)... so Fergie chose well.

I'm from the future, the year 2020. David Moyes had a rough first season but since he had kept Fergies coaching staff they somehow pulled through and made CL. they made 4 good signings the next year and finished 2nd. They have since won 4 of the last 5 with only Ole Solskjaers Cardiff City disrupting them by winning with a 102 points in 2018.

It was a miracle that Alex Ferguson won the title in his final season. As shown when he left, they were only just a top 7 club with that squad. I think he knew a massive reinvention of the squad was needed but he was too old to do the job. Since he left, United have never come close to becoming the club that they once were. Fast forward 10 years. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City are miles clear. Newcastle are a big side again, Brighton, Villa and even those trophy dodgers from Middlesex are investing. United could only just manage to sign the players they did this summer. I can see Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool all winning multiple league titles before United ever get a sniff at it again.

Imagine in 2013 telling fans that by 2020 United would be on there 4th manager, none other than Ole. Mourinho would have shown up, won the Community Shield, League Cup, and Europa League and classed it as a treble. Everton would be on their 5th manager, none other than Carlo Ancelotti and bank rolled by a billionaire. Rooney would have signed again, and left again. Leicester will have won promotion, then won the Premier League, with Spurs pushing them a close 2nd. Liverpool will have won a Champions Leagues in June 2019, and a 19th league title the following season, but not before a global pandemic put a hold to world football for 100 days in 2020! Sunderland would be stuck in League 1, with very little hope of making Premier League again. Also England have won a World Cup penalty shoot out, on their way to a World Cup semi final. 🤯

If he had genuine interest in rebuilding the squad, I believe it could have been done but it would have taken a few years, as you say. He also went through a (relatively) shitty period in the mid-2000s and got us back up and running and certainly would have had a lot more pulling power than the likes of Moyes, and so likely would have fumbled a lot less for deals with top players than what subsequently happened. I also don't believe he would have worked with Woodward but he would have been able to find a much better replacement for David Gill.
