The cost of getting a Greyhound. In this video I cover all the costs of adopting a greyhound; including: adoption fees, beds, collars, food, toys, insurance, vet bills, meds, grooming, and everything else in between. if you are thinking of adopting, this video will highlight the cost of all that is needed to take care of a Greyhound. a lot of these things are also transferable to adopting any dog.

These costs are very much in line with my experience adopting ex-racing greyhounds from an organization in California. It is true that greyhounds have special veterinary and other requirements compared to most other breeds. I've had many dogs over my lifetime, and while I try not to play favorites, I can tell you that greyhounds have a particular gentleness that is very endearing, and they are a surprisingly low activity (in terms of time) breed; they sleep about 20 hours a day. Bottom line: Whether it's a greyhound or any other breed, I believe the joy you get from a dog far outweighs any monetary costs. Dogs tend to bring out the best in humans.

what is a good idea for people to be aware of the cost though, so that they don’t commit to a dog that they later can’t afford to take care of.

Thanks for these great videos with your beautiful dogs. I'm thinking of getting a Greyhound myself and am wondering if you could just estimate what you spend on food per month. I realize you could get cheaper and more expensive brands or foods but how much do you spend? I took care of a French Briard for one year and he mostly ate dry food and it was around 50-60€ per month. I guess it'll be more when you are feeding them fresh and raw meat? Thanks for your help, Sophia

I have adopted 2 Galgo Españoles from Spain. For Shipment, vaccination, neutralization I have paid 720 € for both dogs. To feed the dogs with very good food 50 €/month. My dogs are sleeping always on the sofa, but they also have a nice basket and a couch for their own, cost 150 € for the couch, 50 € for basket and ca. 45€ for the pillow. For the veterinarian you must pay ca. 100 €/year without accidents. For insurances for both dogs I must pay 74€/year. For operation insurances 35 €/both dogs. Both dogs likes their Teddies. I have bought them 2nd hand for 10 €. Both dogs needs coats in Winter, costs 200 €/both dogs.

The initial cost of an Italian greyhound is about $2000-. Shots are about $75- each, for two more series of vaccines and exams. Food cost is super cheap because a large bag lasts about 6 weeks for one dog. Accessories will vary in price according to quality. I buy crates second hand at the thrift store for 10- or less. And baby clothes size 0 to 6 months fit them well and are very inexpensive. Plus they are very healthy animals and have few health issues. So you can achieve your goal of having a fine pet for an affordable price. 🤷‍♀️💜🤷‍♀️

Great video, so informative. Very similar to adopting a retired greyhound here in the states. I think it's pretty complete regarding cost. I will say that I agree & would recommend the pet insurance as I didn't have it the past 3+ decades with mine and it would've been a better decision. I also found I needed dog booties for the protection of my greyT's feet. Wonderful video. I highly recommend it for anyone considering adoption. Please share. I will add the cost is such a fraction of the love, companionship and joy you get in return from these precious creatures that become beloved family members. 💕

I saw that your greys are wearing two collars each. I've seen other greyhounds with multiple collars and some with just one. Is it better to have two collars?
@magnusgreyhound
@magnusgreyhound Жыл бұрын
The smaller collar is their house collar. They wear this from when the get up until just after their last walk of the day. This collar has their ID Tag on it. If they were to accidentally get out of the house or garden they would have a collar on which has the contact information on it. (also a requirement of UK law (but not everyone follows) ) also have the collar means they are easier to get a hold off if they escaped. This collar is not suitable for a greyhound to be walked on as it can slip of their head to easily, (by design so they do not get snagged on anything). The collar we walk the pups on is a martingale collar, which is designed for dogs like greyhounds that have a head smaller than their neck. The collars is also very wide as not to put any excessive pressure on their throut. This collar is quite bulky so we only use it during walkies and take it off otherwise. Hope this helps explain the 2 collars.

Re: food and nutrition. This is a thorny topic. Just realize that we're starting to wise up to the fact that ultra processed foods are really bad for humans. Why would they be any better for your dog? Then factor in that kibble is mostly grain based, with very little actual meat product (many say meat, but are actually bone meal and contain no real meat at all) and remember that your dog is a carnivore. Yes, they evolved along side us for a while, and can process plant matter, but remember that humans can process ethanol and sucrose. That doesn't mean your diet should be 90% rum. Yes there are stories of dogs living for decades on kibble, but equally there are stories of grannies smoking into their 90s. No judgement if you do feed your dogs kibble, we did for years, but as this youtuber found out, raw meat will almost always be pretty great for them. I don't really have answers here yet myself, but I did see a nutritionist say essentially that you would do better by your dog by just straight up giving them what you eat, than a solely kibble diet.

When I adopted my greyhound Alex last year (December 2020) I paid £150, he literally came with nothing but his racing documents. So we had to buy him collars, leads, coats and harnesses which came to around £100 (honestly since I have spent a LOT more, he obviously needs something for every occasion). Then obviously food which is about £70/80 per month with additives. Both my dogs (Alex and Jessie the collie) are insured which is a further £60 a month and then they both get flea, tick and worm treatment (£95 for both dogs) Vaccinations once a year which are £100 All in all it’s expensive but definitely worth it

I have two rescues. One cost one hundred pounds, the other was forty pounds.

It seems the cost of adoption varies quite a bit.

I always wonder if dogs on a raw diet are thinking 'delicious, but stone cold as usual, warm it up to around 37 degrees please, human-minion'? They'd eat the meat raw but presumably a dead rabbit doesn't last long around a pack of dogs so most of their BARF would be, shall we say, 'pre-warmed'? Eeek I have a 'date' for our cockerpoo Jasper to meet with some greyhound ladies (sorry, I can't say 'bitches' with a straight face, clearly I'm a 35-year old child) on Monday at Brighton Retired Greyhounds Association!

Why raised eating bowls?
@magnusgreyhound
@magnusgreyhound 24 күн бұрын
It is more comfortable for them to eat out of a raise bowl. . The jury is a bit split on this, but to also reduce the risk of bloat.

Can you make a video of your greyhound just normal and chillin and doing whatever, maybe just clips of walking around. I would like to show people what a greyhound is like but I just want a video without all this talking and cutting back-and-forth such

I will see what I can do. I do have lots of videos of Magnus & Scout chilling and sleeping on the Magnusgreyhound Instagram page.

The Magnus video that explains the reasons for adopting a retired greyhound would be a good one to show. It's brief and broken down into 5-6 segments like "They're fun" and "They're loving" which you then see Magnus being in the segment. It's one of my favorites.

I don't have the greatest laptop and I always have issues recording the voiceover, so i usually have to do it in one take. so they are always loads of mistakes and retakes. I realised I made the mistake about grams v Kilograms, but i did not want to do it over as that was the best take.

Racing must END globally. Your greys are healthier cuz ur in UK. Caliente track ,next to US border, greys get NO health care, just cruelty. Greys kept in filthiest conditions & are sickly. Ones picked for adoption by owners, survive for only about a year; cannot breathe properly, & suffer from resistant transmittable whip worms/ parasites despite vet care. Charities in West Coast USA get greys from same horrid Caliente track, no other greys are available. Midwest USA is no better, adopting out sick greys; all raised in horrid conditions. You’re blessed to have Magnus & Scout & vice versa.

They are such gentle creatures and do not deserve to be mistreated. I made my videos to help others with their decision to adopt a greyhound as I wanted to give a full picture of living with a greyhound. They are great companions.
