Today's video is all about the REAL cost of your clutter. The clutter in our homes is costing us so much more than just space. It can feel really hard to let go and declutter because it seems wasteful, especially if we are suffering from a scarcity mindset. Let me help you make decluttering easier and help you shift your mindset to that of a decluttering expert!
How much is your clutter costing you?!

Whenever I donate expensive items, I tell myself that the items will be a blessing to a single mom who would never be able to afford the item. I imagine her joy as she discovers my item in a thrift store.

Another way clutter costs you money: My partner had been storing all his kids old clothes and shoes, and all their toys. He meant to sell some of it (not the nostalgic items or items the kids wanted to save). But he never got around to it. When we became partners, I helped him go through it. All the shoes and a good 1/3 of the clothes were moldy or moth-eaten. And so much of the plastic toys had disintegrated. So it never got sold anyway. If he had donated it back when it was in good condition, at least someone else could have benefitted from. Now he just delayed throwing it in the trash for 10 years.

Flash back 58 years and you, Ms. Clutterbug, are my home economics teacher reincarnated. I have always had a neat and tidy uncluttered home because everything you teach, I was taught 58 years ago by a very neat, tidy, organized, and decluttered schoolteacher. I guess when you have five classes a day to teach your school kitchen has to be set up so everything has a place so that the next class can find what they need without wasting class time. I took her teachings to heart, and always kept my home organized (aka a place of everything and everything in its place), I also grew up in a house that wasn't organized, and I saw the chaos it created when you couldn't find what you needed. I swore when I have my own home, I would never have to search for something like I did in my childhood home. I think home economics should still be taught; life skills are important.

I am in the middle of divorcing my spouse. We've been together almost 20 years and it's not easy. Once I found your videos at the beginning of this year, I started to focus on myself and my life and what I want to get done and I made myself a list with things I want to accomplish this year - all things that are just for me so I can be just myself without a significant other. I'm giving myself a whole year for this but the main goals are decluttering everything I own and finding a home for all the things I have. Plus new furniture! I am 6 months into this project and I am more than halfway done. I could never have accomplished so much without your videos and guidance and support! I have a blackboard in the kitchen now that is my command center and this has turned out to be incredibly useful! Thank you, stranger on the internet, for helping me get through a pretty awful time in my life and getting out the other end feeling accomplished and happy and relieved of so many things that I have just given away for free. Thank you Cas!

This was my favorite statement from the entire show! When she said this, it was like a lightbulb turned on, and it completely changed the way I thought about the items. When she further said the money is out of your bank account the minute you buy it… that’s the ah-ha moment that disconnected the attachment of the object being a guilty “but it costed money.” The money is gone, it has been gone, and the two are no longer linked! This was so helpful. Now, I need to tackle how to part with sentimental items that link to people in my past or items that link to important events/ memories. That is the most difficult for me.

As I got older, I never had friends over...EVER!!! I KNOW what that does to children. My home now is clean and probably 95% uncluttered. A little bit of clutter drives me nuts. That's the story of my divorce, too. My first husband had a model plane kit spread all over the dining room table for an entire year - while I was supposed to keep two toddlers away from it. Mind you, the living room and dining room were open to each other via a double-wide open doorway. It was basically one room. He got worse and worse. When we couldn't use the front door because of his piles, I broached the subject and he threatened me if I picked it up. At that point, I told him that something had to change and he ignored me. Cass, the POWER of each one of your POINTS is awesome! It’d take me 20 mins to find anything in my Mum’s house and that’s if I asked her where it was. First time I noticed how much clutter affected my emotions. My narcissistic hoarder ex used his clutter to take over every part of the house so I’d have precious little space and couldn’t decorate so no house was ever a home. I felt like I wasn’t important enough to be a human let alone in a good marriage. Apparently decorating would be adding dust collectors (and express my personality in my own home) and then I’d walk into another room full of boxes along 2-3 walls to the ceiling. I called each room an Olympic hurdling event and if I made it to the other side without hurting myself on the 3D carpet it’d be a win. Towards the end I started separating a few spots in the kitchen so I wouldn’t be in his way but he resented my new small boundaries. When he moved out he only threw out about 3 bins of garbage after never having a clean out. Finally got him to get someone to clean up the rubbish he’d left in the yard last week. He couldn’t even arrange a donation pickup. You and Dana are driving how I set up my home now I’m starting the new chapter of my life. Thank you so much. All marriage I felt like the Cinderella in the first half of the story. I’m just finalising being single so not sure what princess I’ll become but I’ll get there. Princess Fiona? Not Disney but will be happy and free to be me.

Our 17 yo and his friends frequently do "Ted Talks." They do other things, like D&D, video games, etc., but it seems like at every event, someone has been assigned to give a talk. And these are usually bizarre topics! This goes on year long, so not just a summer thing.

Depression* self loathing* not having time* buying things over again* getting divorced ( over this issue)* embarrassed / fear of letting people in my house( due to cps visit and state of my home)* kids with out time with friends* excuse after excuse* What else do you want to know? Buying habits; *items in duplicates ( so you have a back up) * aquireing more than needed due to sales of items you need( food, bath, cleaning supplies, self care products, cosmetics, tools, hobby items) * not finishing a diy project( so keeping specific items for a single project) * saying yes to free items.( that you know in your head, you do not need any of it)

Thanks for this motivational video. I have been a sloth on my couch for years it seems. This passed week the city came to look at my back yard because the neighbors complained. We have a week clean up. Going away so the week turned into two days. I am kinda mad at my neighbors but I think it was a blessing because my yard is cleaned up. My house is the same. A lot of your points hit home with me.

Cas, so many times it seems as if the focus of your video is spot on for where I am in the moment. You're so right about feeling as if you have more time, once the clutter has gone (or even reduced). I keep donating boxes & bags of things... and when I get back home there's MORE waiting for me. Some days I know I've got decision fatigue & get worn out. My fix? Watch a bit of Cas on camera & get motivated to fill 1 bag or do something for 15". Always gets me going & moving forward. Yesterday I decided to sort collect & sort through items for Easter. One tub with Easter things was the goal. I did it! But got a laugh out of the 17 Easter baskets we had! Seventeen!!! I'm keeping 4 to use & all the rest are getting donated along with a grocery bag of decorations, extra bunnies & a few dozen plastic eggs :) Had no idea we had that much. Thanks again♡

You're so right! It takes a little work to upkeep, but I love that at any point within about 10 minutes, I can have my place company ready. And it's pretty much never to a point I'd be embarrassed to let someone in if I were to get a random stop-by. It also makes me just enjoy being home. Once you have a home at that point, it kind of becomes fun to organize.

I have struggled for years trying to figure out WHY I can't just allow myself to do things I enjoy. When you said you wouldn't allow yourself to do fun things due to the guilt and shame of the stuff weighing on you, I swear a lightbulb went off over my head! Also, funniliy enough, I have recently started decluttering and getting rid of stuff and I had started doing some of my hobbies. Not all the time, but a bit. Crazy correlation! Thanks Cas!!

This was definately me! I wanted to clean up but by the time I moved the clutter out of the way and did the basics, I was too tired or ran out of time to do more. I found a very compassionate woman who cleans houses to come in and help me. She cleans while I remove (bag up) the clutter. This has helped me SO MUCH!! Then it is so much easier to maintain. I had so much junk sitting around because all my cabinets, drawers, and closets were full of the junk I never used. And, yes, I can testify to the fact that I feel much happier and have more time. I thought I was the only one dealing with this situation. Thank you, Cass, for continuing to shed light on the issue of too much junk.

How to make sure your child never says they’re bored: every time they say it they have to clean out and organize a drawer or closet or something small. My mom did this one summer and my sister and I still will not say we’re bored in front of her, and we’re in our 40s.

Rapunzel for Cass! This is one of your BEST videos! Hard-hitting, but yet compassionate. You present hard things with honesty and humor! A tough balance! I have been decluttering for a few years now. Overwhelm came after many donations of stuff from friends and gifts for children. Stuff is a blessing and a curse! A bigger house and more storage is not the answer. I finally mentally got that!

Ha I shared this with my husband! He divorced his 1st wife, a major reason was the clutter. I shared this with my sister...her clutter has been linked to her depression, I shared this with my mom-in-law. She has isolated herself due to the shame she carries for the clutter in her home! You hit the $ with this video! Too true! A dirty, cluttered home, is an unhappy home.

Perfect time for your video. My 13yr daughter and I are cleaning out her closet. This closet has been neglected. There was a giant pile of clothes knee deep. Clean, dirty new, borrowed from sister, too big, too small. We are on day 4 of cleaning and sorting. I have 5 giant bags to donate! Looking forward to the reward of being happier and less clutter when this is done. 😊

Wow.... Just... WOW!!! I could have written ever word of this video from my own experience. I grew up on a family where we SHOPPED on vacation. We didn't hike or go to museums, we shopped. And as an adult I did this for a long time. I have beautiful clothes and handbags with VERY tasteful home decor and I felt like a wannabe and loser in my home because of the clutter. Here I had picture perfect interior design and I couldn't share and enjoy it because of the clutter. I FINALLY cleaned it ALL out and I feel like a completely different person. This sounds super strange but I finally feel authentic. I finally feel like I'm truly living the life that my exterior life projected. It's amazing how different my attitude is since I no longer live in mess

That makes me so sad because I feel that way and when you said how you have so much time now and often are looking for things to do, it makes me sick to my stomach because i dont feel i can ever get there. I look around at all there is to do and get so overwhelmed and dont know where to start so I end up doing nothing. Or learn something else from youtube. Or go shopping cause Im depressed. Kinda foolish and counterproductive I realize, but there it is. I have had a lovely friend coming over and helping me declutter and she has been amazing. But after she leaves I look around and although a tiny area might be decluttered, it doesnt seem to make a difference overall. It is just too much stuff. And if the dishes arent done, then that saps my motivation for doing most things as well. The dishes are super important to my husband, well a clean kitchen, so if there are dishes then I try to do them but when they get too much, I dont even feel like cooking. It is all just a vicious cycle. I know you and Dawn are at the other end of the journey, but it just seems so impossible at this stage. Help

I'm so sorry you feel this way! It sounds to me like you are way over your clutter threshold. All the cleaning in the world won't make a lasting change if you don't get a lot of items out of your home. I'm so happy to hear you have a friend who is helping you! Decluttering doesn't happen overnight, but if you keep being consistent, you will get there before you know it

@@Clutterbug I would really love your help. I have been watching you for a very long time understanding I am a visual organizer and other people were hidden organizers was life changing for me. I finally had words for what was going on and it wasn't a defect. And words for what made me uncomfortable that wasn't offensive to others. I watch all your videos I have made huge progress I even did the course with dawn and Dana I have never been able to get to the point you talk about. I am stuck. I recently moved May 10th from a one bedroom to a two bedroom I now have a washer and dryer and a dishwasher and a small backyard and my own bed for the first time in almost a decade and those things have been magical but I don't know how to set up a kitchen I don't know how to translate how I cook into the concept of zoning you talk about. I have never had a clean kitchen I don't know where or how I would cook if my kitchen was actually clean and I have to cook from scratch. My kitchen is bigger but it has an odd set up and I am not sure what to do about it how to put things away so somedays I will just leave dishes in the dishwasher and groceries on the table or in a bag somewhere because I don't where it makes sense to put it i can't figure out a logical system I know people say clean the kitchen first but it is always last because I don't have the brain power to figure it out would never get anywhere cleaning if I had to start with the kitchen but I would love to have a kitchen that is practically and functions smoothly and I can cook from scratch easily and efficiently and keep it clean and really cook how I am actually supposed to cook by that I mean fallow the GAPS protocol correctly not society pressure but I bend a lot of rules which slows my healing to damage control. I really want to explore things that are a little more complex but I can't right now so if there is a way to help me I would really appreciate that

My brother died suddenly at 39 almost 6 years ago. I remember going through his stuff and he was single / no kids and still had a TON of stuff. I kept some things for the first few years but slowly got rid of some because in my mind this isn’t making me feel any closer to him. I know he doesn’t care that I’m hanging onto it or not. He had really nice suits and shoes that my mom donated for others to enjoy. Even his car was nice, but it had to go. Even in my life, now I can let go of things I’ve hung onto because I see that when you die truly nothing goes with you (we know this but we don’t want to acknowledge it), and the things we think our family and kids would appreciate, they may not. I kept my brother’s CDs & some of his wall art. I didn’t care about his nice cufflinks or autographed baseball. We have to rethink our tokens that we hang onto too. We don’t need to save 100 things for our children and their children. They really won’t care! At least I didn’t when my mom came to my house every week with a new (old) thing she found of mine from grade school and high school. I would smile and take it then pitch it the next day. My house is still a work in progress, but it definitely helps to be able to let go of things without emotional attachment so you can minimize the amount of stuff and start to feel that freedom of having less and it looking great.

I feel that way each time I walk into Hobby Lobby, Home Goods and the other box stores. Just imagine how much of that junk will end up in a landfill. Just think of the energy consumption used to manufacture and ship shoddy products. I never could understand the stupid signage people have plastered in their home. Why do I need a sign to tell me I am in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room etc... And trust me, the farmers I grew up with never had a sigh in their home that said Farm Fresh,.

That left everything unsorted becuse we didn't know were to put the things we want and need. So now we have 3 new closets were we used to have a bunch of boxes with random stuff. Mind you, I have 2 storage units, a two car garage, 2 sheds, and a den that are full of stuff that need to be dealt with, but our weather (Arizona) is too brutal to deal with most of those right now.
