King Los said it. Big Daddy Kane already clarified this. “Freestyle” is “Freedom of Style” - when you spit a pre written verse with no particular topic or story, it’s just a showcase of skill. “Off the Dome” - is not a verse, it’s a spontaneous rhyme with no prior written bars. Though you may mix in lines floating around in your head already. And the youngest is “A Mixtape Freestyle” - a rhyme over a beat you loved that isn’t yours flipping what they did, to do it (hopefully) better.

Basically its all the same in different forms as long as its free of the focus of a particular song.. If you take what everybody said... You'll understand that there is 2 forms of freestyle.. Off the Dome.. And.. Written... As long as it's as Big Daddy Kane said... "Freedom of Style"... Its freestylin...
@mccoyster30305 жыл бұрын
Words change over time though. Just because in the olden days "freestyle" meant one thing, doesn't mean it has to (or should) forever. Calling mixtape bars or random written verses "freestyle", imho, is an insult to people who can actually freestyle (off top) incredibly well. And further, makes the younger crowds confused. If you search youtube for "freestyle" and compare some industry cat's written bars to an underground dope freestyler, of course you're going to think the industry cat is leaps and bounds better when in reality they're doing completely different things. As I said above, I think people clinging to the old definition of "freestyle" are doing so because they aren't very good off the top, and don't want to be looked down on compared to people who actually go off the top when freestyling and do it well.

@@deanjohnston1460 on some real shyt.. I can and will only speak from the experiences I have in this regard.. Just because it's been going on forever doesn't mean it's "what's up".. Glad to see your back. I love this because I was always confused about the definition of freestyle and how necessary it was to be a respected emcee. In battle rap, these is a back and forth between hardcore fans and casuals about how impressive a rhyme really is in battle since it’s known the rhymes are prepared. You have the casuals saying ‘ of course it’s good, he had time to prepare his opponent, he couldn’t do that off the dome’ and the hardcore follower would respond with ‘it’s a different time and format now, off the top freestyles aren’t necessary’ and the only difference I see is social media. Social media adds and interesting dynamic cause emcees don’t want to be caught on camera being less than great and an off the top freestyle increases the chances of being so

MY MAN. Always great to see new stuff from you. Great video, mate. Got me thinking over here -- I think freestyle is basically the equivalent of jazz improv, but with lyrics as opposed to notes. To me, if you write it down ahead of time and then say it later... that's just a song. That's what a song is. But the immediacy/'off-the dome-ness' of the lyrics (if you catch what I'm saying) is what differentiates a 'freestyle' from a 'performance of a song'. Part of the reason that freestyles are so amazing to hear is that you're not only hearing the performance of a song, you're witnessing the creation of it as well. It's everything -- inspiration, creation and performance -- all done in front of your eyes. And when people are in the zone, it is FREAKIN' AMAZING. I think many people now do a combination of the two. I actually see very few people doing COMPLETE freestyles and doing them with excellence (Harry Mack is the only one that comes to mind right now (I THINK he does everything 'off the dome')). To me, it's generally understood that most people you see spitting bars in a cypher are calling upon lyrics they wrote earlier and combining them with a few 'in the moment' rhymes. Again, great to see new stuff from you. Much respect. Cheers!
@macnolds41455 жыл бұрын
A good video for those who need it. However, for fans of hip hop the answer is simple, obvious and well-known: freestyling can be either "off the top" or a written verse that isn't just a performance of a song (e.g. it could even be a verse from a song, but on a different beat- or acapella). Simple.

At this point, the umbrella answer to “true” freestyling should just be: *creative expressionism.* Be it written or spontaneously off the top or even transposed as a mix of both, one thing remains prevalent. There are no rules in Hip Hop. 💯

So thank you for all the work you’ve put in here 🙏 The term freestyle has bugged me forever. I can’t go off the top for shit, but I’m deadly with a pen. I always called my free form rap stuff “freeverse” but now people associate that term with a particular kind of poetry that I usually don’t resemble in what I would consider freeverse. I see so many rappers that will call their writtens in cyphers and on the radio freestyles, and I’m always confused why we never just found a word that everyone agreed on to draw the distinction

i think its interesting to look on what freestyle means outside of hip-hop. people freestyle dance which is just a dance without a pre-set routine, but you still had to think up those moves before hand then just put them together in an off the dome way. i been snowboarding since i was 5, freestyle is a style of boarding. it's using whatever you got in front of you on the trail to do tricks with. wether its a fallen tree or a root sticking up with some ice on it, a mogul or embankment formed from people turning and shifting the snow into a mound all day that day, or a set of stairs and rail once youget to the botom of the slope and you got man made structures. i treat my freestyle rhymes in a similar way; using some phrases i keep up in my sleeve or bouncing off an idea someone else in the cypher put there. to me freestyling is just rhyming without knowing where its going exactly and what in the room is gonna come up and give you more to work with. like what X say. its rhymes that arent exactly about one thing in particular.

Thank You for sparking this conversation. I think its vital for the culture that we actively define "off the top" and "freestyle" differently. The accepted confusion between the two doesn't give the necessary platform that can credit the mental agility and talent of improv rap. This is not to say that written rap needs less credit. They both need their due credit, separately too, and taught as such. It would be so dope having a culture that actively does this, for example, take Sway's Five Fingers of Death: this segment shows the rappers flow agility and ability to rock with a DJ, something you don't see embraced often anymore and we are actively losing this skill because of the accepted confusion of freestyle. We as a culture stand to gain more from actively defining the line between off the dome and written. We have a lot to discover from coming off the dome (hell even writing inside your dome) and until we set the definitions and actively put platforms for them, we will keep on losing the potential we have from learning these skills separately.

In fact, 99% of the battles here, are the "off the dome" type, it's nearly impossible to you to see a battle that was written. We don't have freestyles like the ones with Lex too. To answer that last question: I'd say they both deserve the same amount of respect. A freestyler and a writer shares the same road but are in different lanes. Freestyler being in the left since their lines are formed very quickly and writers being in right because they take time to write out their lines. Both want to rap but just have different means of doing so. Some freestylers aren't good when it comes to writing and vice versa, so they should be respected equally.

A true hip hop historian and journalist, etc. who (in my personal opinion) has always provided us with high quality content, while operating within integrity.

King Los thought about freestyle is by far the best. Has given me a new perspective on the idea of freestyle! "Words Not Bound By Restriction Or Imprisonment Of Other People's Perceptions But Your True Self Personified Through Sound. As Long As They Fit The "Free" Criteria, It Doesn't Matter [If They're Written].

Justin you killed this video essay. I know these things take work but I wouldn't mind if you uploaded these 2-3 times a week 💜

Thank you for this I'm so tired of people who've never written a rhyme or spit a rhyme in their life try and tell emcees the definition of a freestyle.

Outstanding! It's one thing to competently bring attention to the diverse array of both talent and shortcomings in Hip Hop culture. When you actually delve into the very foundations, the Bedrock of What We Love & Live..? Not Only are you promoting and preserving her Essence, you're Demolishing the temples established to praise what Hip Hop never was. Undeniably, the artform has evolved and progressed but, nobody would steal an airplane before studying and taking some lessons. So why would so many try to steal Lyrical Heritage without the Fundamental investigation and preparation?? "know What you're saying... as well as Why you're saying it". Nice job bruv.

Elzhi writes the craziest rhymes I’ve ever heard, while MC Juice kicks some of the best off-the-top rhymes ever. One doesn’t really take more talent than the other, it is just amazing to see someone truly be able to kill an off-the-top freestyle

I've been a fan and advocate of HIP-HOP since '82, and i think Papoose gave a good definition of what "freestyle" is.

Another excellent video my dude. Starting off the new year well. King Los is a king when it comes to rapping off the dome freestyling without question. I always took freestyling as something done off the dome personally.

Great video Justin, this is a important discussion that isn't really had today and I'm glad there is someone breaking it down. Plus those bars you spit weren't wack give yourself more credit. Can't wait for more content

Out west, we've ALWAYS defined freestyle rap as off dome. Period. Answers to the last 2 questions. Yes. I would listen to a playlist of amazing off top mcs (Supernatural, Aceyalone, Insomniac etc.) because I'm a fan of off-top rhyming...when it's dope. I don't think off top rhyming shiuld get more props, BUT I do respect mcs who can.

As a young emcee I used to be able to off top in any Cypher for long periods of time.. I had no formal training in studio.. I didn't count bars or have set direction for the music I made.. But could make a song.. When I went to the studio 1st time I had to learn all of those things and develop a pen game.. Which I didn't have.. So to answer that final question you posed.. for me.. There is a skill set for both.. And when you can improvise off top in such a way that people will believe its penned.. And it has direction and clarity..And you can sit down and create a full track lyrically planned out.. You have mastered both..

Everybody had a definition of what they felt freestyle was but papoose was 100% spot on with his answer and assessment of what it used to be and how it changes from street to radio ! any rhyme that has not met paper is considered off the dome FREESTYLE ! If your rhyme that you mentally write inside your head ever meets paper by usage of pen it now becomes a WRITTEN FREESTYLE ! ✍🏾🤔
