Hi friends! Thanks for watching! Just a heads up - this is a re-upload of the same Silver Sword episode you may have seen a few days ago. We had a couple of things to iron out but the content is very much the same! Whether this is your first time seeing this pop up or not though, I hope you enjoy the episode

Wolves hunt in packs but are led by a leader, I believe. I've heard something about the alpha wolf theory being incorrect. I have not finished this thought yet.. Hmm 🤔 Anyway, perhaps if a pack is led by a particularly brazen wolf, the pack will be less reckless with the leader removed. If that's the case that might explain why the myth is about a specific big one.

Something to note is that the silver sword is actually used way more frequently in the games (as a game mechanic) than in the books. For most of the books, Geralt didn't even have a silver sword on him. The reason for this is that in the games all monsters and supernatural creatures are vulnerable to silver, where as in the books only a select few have such a vulnerability. Typically monsters that are magical in nature such as specters or monsters created through a spell or a curse, like werewolves or strigas. Even then, Geralt only resorted to his silver sword when facing particularly strong monsters with such a vulnerability. This is because, though in the games Geralt can afford to own 100 different armour sets and 300 different swords, in lore, witchers actually work for nickels and dimes. Often barely having enough money to afford food, nevermind maintain their gear. Especially in the case of such a high maintenance weapon as a silver sword. So they only resort to that weapon when it's absolutely necessary. In fact, off the top of my head, I only remember Geralt ever using his silver sword once throughout the entire book series. That was during the "The Witcher" short story in The Last Wish. Which was the story when he fought the striga.

Silver is a purification metal going back to early Christianity such as Gold as Gold was used to make the arch of the covenant in Judaism, but silver is primarily Christian. In the Witcher series it's a steel sword with a silver coating but it's not said as far as I know as to the thickness of the silver vs steel, then the elephant in the room it also has magic infused in the core of the sword. We all a know a pure silver can't actually exist in the contents of battle but coated steel sword maybe, Shad spoke about this believe.
@certs743 Жыл бұрын
As illustrated in the video the concept of silver being about purification long predates Christianity and was likely just assimilated from earlier cultures.

The silver sword is only for a certain few monsters, that's just something they introduced in the games. His steel sword is made out of meteor steel and that's what he uses for most enemies.
@jeffbenton61832 жыл бұрын
King Tut had a meteor iron knife - it was a sign of prestige. During the Bronze Age, people realized that the iron that made up meteors was stronger than the bronze they had, and it was really the only source of iron they had (albeit, not enough to build an iron age from). So there is a historical element to the idea that swords made from metals found in meteors are better than those forged from Earthly metals.

@@halo7oo he's probably too busy doing regular work, and there's likely some clause about how he can't start his own channel because he's on the RA official one. As a guest I'm pretty sure it's fine because he's in a consulting role, but as a host it's probably different.

This is why he always says to check out the royal armories channel in his react videos or these loadout videos. It helps promote the museum he works for. He probably could make his own channel, but honestly, working with another channel also likely helps stop him from geeking out to much.

7:08 did they make the case out of silver, too? What are they gonna do, throw spent cartridges at the werewolf after they've already shot it?
@jeffbenton61832 жыл бұрын
Maybe the cases are made of steel so they can have a higher chamber pressure. (The US Army's new rifle uses a case that is part-brass, part-steel). Either that, or they did make the cases out of silver so the bullet remains pure or something silly like that.

@@jeffbenton6183 or maybe they made it all out of silver to convey the message visually... A brass casing with a grey shiny metal tip doesn't look very exotic
@jeffbenton61832 жыл бұрын
@@noah8162 Well obviously, that's the dev's reason for doing that, but I was trying to find an "in-universe" explanation. Also, I think that a silver bullet in a brass casing would look better than all silver because of the contrast. Since bullets are usually reddish due to the copper jacket, a brief close-up should visually convey the fact that "this is a silver bullet, not a normal one." EDIT: I just did a quick google images search for "silver bullet", and it looks like the internet disagrees with my sense of style. It seems that most people who want to depict a silver bullet, do so with a silver-colored casing as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if only the flats were coated in silver and the core/cutting edges were steel. The blade, when passing through the target, would expose its flesh to the silver on the flats, doing all that kewl supernatural increased damage, maybe burning, stopping the monsters unnatural healing factor, poisoning its blood supply with all that "pure" stuff xD etc, maybe silver is somehow imbued with magic and that is doing the damage ?

I recall there was a man challenged into a shoot out with a rival family. Their own family suggested to use a sliver bullet, suspecting the other family are indeed werewolves. The shot missed because sliver is too light, not suitable to use as a bullet.
@jeffbenton61832 жыл бұрын
I don't think the miss can't be attributable to the weight of silver. Silver has a greater density than steel or copper, and those work in bullets just fine. Though it's not quite as heavy as lead, it's close enough that it would probably work. Though it's true that a heavier bullet can go a longer distance (for the same power charge) than a lighter one, the lighter one will stay on a flatter trajectory for longer (because it's going faster). A lighter bullet is more susceptible to wind shifts, the density of silver vis-a-vis lead is close enough that I'd guess it wouldn't make much of a difference for a very long shot.

I don’t know if I remember correctly, but silver is a metal that was used to pay Judas after he betrayed Jesus. So God took it and cursed/blessed it so that it would be used to punish everything that’s evil. States the Bible.
