While Sub-Zero and Scorpion are loosely based on the Lin Kuei clan, in reality, this clan comes from a book that is widely considered to be a farce. So, we dive into the real history behind Ninja, and what they would have actually trained in. Similarly, we look into Liu Kang's Shaolin Monk origins, Raiden's inspiration from Raijin, Kano and the Black Dragon Society, Johnny Cage's Jean Claude Van Damme roots, and Sonya Blade's US Special Forces training.

Scorpion isnt a swap. Sub actually is. Scorpion was created first and they created subzero later on to feud with scorpion. The suit that daniel pesina wore was yellow, and they swapped it to blue. Raiden wasnt based off that as a character. Only his name. Tobias himself stated this. Everything else was based off of big trouble in little china.

I'm pretty sure Raiden was influenced by both Raijin and the The Storms (particularly Lightening) from Big Trouble in Little China, given the obvious parallels between them. Raijin is a prominent figure in Japanese mythology, known as the god of storms, with his name deriving from the Japanese words for thunder and god. So it's evident that they drew inspiration from Raijin's identity as a thunder god, as well as his name, when developing Raiden, then used the movie as inspiration for his appearance and powers.

i think i saw a movie about ninja origin it was a clan of warrior in china, the movie was in cantonese, so possibly a hong kong made movie, from what i remember i think its a movie from the late 70s or in the 80s, i forgot the name but from what i remember from the plot is that there is a kung fu master teaching stealth martial arts to his 3 pupils (or 4 i forgot) and the master claims that this martial arts is the predecessor of japanese shinobi monk warriors but its a movie so idk if its a real history or just for the sake of making a movie

It still amazes me how Liu Kang is wrongly pronounced Lou Kang , instead of "Lee-ou" Kang. But whatever. Even in MK11, the Kronika, Devorah and Subzero voice actors are the only ones to pronounce it correctly.

Me and my buddies had a drinking game everytime Netherealm studios announce a new Mortal Kombat is whether looks asian or american. We notice since MK vs DC characters like Kitana,Mileena,Raiden etc. Looks Western but then MK9 was announced some of their appearance changed to asian. Then on MKX looks Western again after than on MK11 looks hella Murican karen Now on MK1 Sindel especially looks chinese numba wun 😂

@@thedude8128 According to John Tobias, the name and character were originally influenced by a trip to the field museum in Chicago, and discovering Raijin, the God of thunder. That was the initial inspiration. In designing the character further, they took inspirations from Big Trouble in Little China - but as this is a video about real historical influences, I specifically was talking about the Raijin part of the influence. John Tobias has a long Twitter thread where he explains all of this origin in further detail.
