I grew up in the Midwest and have seen American Gothic many times at the Art Institute in Chicago. It’s one of the classic American paintings and instantly recognizable. Wild that the actual house still exists.

I noticed that the ceiling of the front porch was painted a very pale blue. That was a very old custom in the South. It was believed it would keep away hauntings. I never knew the house was real. That was such a severe looking couple. I thought they were married as well. Very cool history.

I pass thru Eldon on my way to oskaloosa at least once a week, Eldon is a nice town. The house was a private residence until about 15 years ago. It's been restored well, when I saw it just after it was sold by the family of the owner, it was in pretty poor condition, and the back porch was cluttered. Looks much better now

So cool you tracked that down. Never dawned on me it was real. Funny story, growing up we had a copy in the den. A friend from elementary school said, hey are those your grandparents? 😂 When you’re back down in Bucks/Hunterdon Co. there are two Gothic structures. One a garage in Doylestown & a home in Frenchtown

I don't think most people think "it's just a house", and if they do, I think they're missing the perspective and respect towards the world that you have that's so important! Just the fact that the house is from the 1800s is impressive and deserves respect and admiration, let alone that it's such an integral part of american history that it's in a painting that I think most people have seen at some point in their lives.

Lol...I love how you are "in the painting"! That's a cool little house...I never knew there was a real house that was used as the background. @@linollieum3742 Ah. I’m not an irresponsible, disrespectful a-hole so I don’t think of using air b&bs for that purpose. It would be a unique place to stay (like the giant potato or the underwater hotel in the keys).
