Thanks for sharing my footage of my highlights from the 2015 US International Kuo Shu Championship Tournament lei tai fights! 🙂 I love full-contact Chinese martial arts fighting, be it Wushu Sanda or Guoshu lei tai, and I hope it gets more recognition and support! To your point about your personal thoughts and experience, something I will say is that many of my sparring partners and friends have criticized and questioned the validity of Guoshu lei tai as a form of full-contact fighting. Initially, my impression of the lei tai fights was that fighters were very aggressive, and the fights themselves were very fast-paced. Since then, I have developed a very tempered view of them, especially after comparing them with modern Wushu Sanda fights. Many Chinese martial arts instructors and practitioners alike that I personally know, including my sparring partners and friends, some of whom have both cornered and participated in the lei tai fights at these tournaments, view modern Wushu Sanda as having a higher level and standard of competition and skill. This is because modern Wushu Sanda is a developed sport event, with a common benchmark of competition rules and skill levels with a certain “professional” league (although the distinction between “amateur” and “professional” Sanda is more about the rulesets, as the athletes that compete both are often the same group of people, so there is no real distinction between leagues of athletes as in boxing and kickboxing circuits), whereas the Guoshu lei tai circuit is purely amateur (though the organizers of these tournaments fully acknowledge this) with no real professional league to develop skilled and talented competitors in a similar manner to boxing and kickboxing leagues. An example of this is Vincent Meng, who has competed in both modern Wushu Sanda and Guoshu lei tai with his Taekwondo and wrestling background, having lost his first year competing at the 2017 US Wushu Sanda Team Trials, but by contrast has handily become champion in his weight division in Guoshu lei tai every year he has competed since 2016. It is worth noting that there is a positive correlation between the formal training of boxing and kickboxing by Chinese martial arts fighters and their level of fighting skill, and often a causative relationship can be inferred from this. We Chinese Wushu artists have a lot of catching up to do, including Sanda fighters; we need to study boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling properly. In the case of Guoshu lei tai, I would even go as far as to say that practitioners should study Muay Thai as well, since the practice would be very educational on how to properly apply knee and elbow strikes in a full-contact sparring environment. Some traditionalists and purists would argue against this, as they want to “stay true” to their styles by not straying from their forms. However, I would argue that since most Chinese martial arts fighters are already mimicking boxing and kickboxing methods to develop fighting skills, they might as well go all the way and exchange skills from Muay Thai, noted to be the “best” and most “powerful” style of striking in both kickboxing and MMA circuits, in order to see how apply the full range of striking techniques in full-contact, as well as how to improve in our actual fighting methods. However, although Guoshu lei tai is generally sloppier, it is still entertaining to watch, and often due to the mismatches, you’ll always find a show there, from many different stylists mimicking their forms, to those applying the most efficient Chinese martial arts techniques from a more conventional fighting stance like boxing or kickboxing. "Those ‘orthodox inheritors’ of traditional martial arts, regardless of whether they were lofty monks or local grandmasters, were either kocked out or scared out of the competition.Even though, at registration, every competitor identified themselves as belonging to a traditional style, every one of them engaged in secret auxiliary combat training of their own device." -Zhao Daoxin, Yiquan master, student of Yiquan founder Wang Xiangzhai, and ranked 13th at the 1929 Hangzhou Lei Tai Tournament

The Amtgard/Belegarth peeps really leveled up their outdoors foam-fighting game during the pandemic and they're all over the place. They've got some fun games and while some of the weapons look a little derpy (I'm talking to you, pool noodles) some people like the edged weapons or axes and if you ask a couple "do you want get together sometime and riff to some dubstep lightsaber remixes while taking turns filming" you're pretty likely to get an enthusiastic yes. Last one I went to, one group had this bar set with a table and some stools that you could tear apart to make weapons and shields, and this tiny little woman went full gobin mode and carried our team and it was just glorious.

@@TheVulgarSkill Yeah, it's a really fun crew and there's always a few people who are unexpectedly good. I also dabbled a bit with Lightspeed Lightsaber and Saber Legion but I prefer low gear/safe weapons. Fun fact: you can just wrap a lightsaber blade in stretch bandages and put a bit of that craft foam over it and it still glows fine but is orders of magnitude less hurty :)

Lei Tai was my next competitive step after Kyokushin Karate and it's something I want to get back into when I feel physically ready for it again and get back in fighting shape. I train people for the weapons combat a lot these days for Chinese Martial Arts tournaments since the HEMA systems I teach work fine for it and most Chinese sword pedagogy is working on catching up to HEMA since in a lot of CMA there has been little emphasis on weapons sparring as opposed to forms. That's improving in leaps and bounds though.

@TheVulgarSkill
@TheVulgarSkill Жыл бұрын
@@beenright5115 yeah I've talked about this a little bit one issue with a lot of weapons forms in traditional martial arts is eventually people stopped sparring or applying them in actual fights and so while many arts kept a crystalized form or kata tradition they stopped developing distance, timing, and the skills even more integral to swordfighting than techniques. There are exceptions, but a lot of people can do a great tonfa kata but have never done even light sparring against someone while using one. HEMA on the other hand, as part of its reconstruction, had lots of free fencing and sparring from the beginning and therefore developed a lot of good weapons fighters despite lacking a "living tradition."

Been there, done that, I have the T-shirt 😁. Nice video about the event. I fought in the mid 90’s down in MD, I think Lei Tai is a great way for MA to compete in full contact especially Kung Fu stylist. You’ll see your flaws really fast on the platform, so Don’t go in with a point fighting mentality. Study the game first, train and spar with the cage head gear on to get use to the lack of visibility. Also breathing inside that gear is a art too 😅

Sanda and kuoshu lei tai are different full contact combat sports, in a way, let's say that kuoshu lei tai is the Taiwanese counterpart of Sanda. Also, as far as I was aware, knees and elbows are legal in kuoshu lei tai under the Chinese Kuoshu association.

Was wondering when someone would point this out. The difference between kuoshu sparring and sanda is significant, because the former started a few years before the current govt took over. After that, kuoshu was replaced with wushu, which was divided into Tao Lu for forms demos with lots of inserted gymnastics, and sanda for kickboxing. The grassroots traditional Kung Fu schools outside of the standardised umbrella slowly forgot how to spar, and thus became sources of content for the likes of channels like Fight Commentary Breakdowns, where u c traditional masters throw windmills into the air while getting beaten up by kickboxers. In an alternate universe where kuoshu lei tai had continued doing their thing in the mainland, it would have been the combat sport evolution of all traditional schools like wing chin, hung gar, chow gar, CLF, 5ancfist, etc, where they would have honed their real time fighting skills against each other, refining through trial and error, probably eventually developing a streamlined in fight system based on what works, while maintaining their diverse kata practices as a kind of cultural art

You do see a decent amount of kicks in these fights, but definitely less than you would in some other sports. The big reason for this is how good a lot of these people are at catching kicks, especially at the higher level tournaments, and if they catch it they can very easily transition into a takedown that leaves them standing and scores more points. You have to be pretty good at kicking and setting up kicks to consistently avoid that.

If you watched the Kuoshu in the 70's and 80's, you'll find it more interesting than it is today. In the Republican era "Kuoshu" fighting competitions were also called Sanshou and Sanda. 散手 (Sanshou) = Free hand, Scatter hand, Diversified hand. 散打 (Sanda) = Free striking, Free fighting. But nowadays in Taiwan it's called Tushou Leitai (徒手擂台) = Bare-hand Leitai ,in the United States it's called Kuoshu Leitai (國術擂台) = Kuoshu Leitai. Kuoshu = National art Leitai = Fighting arena

@@metrolinamartialarts Seems to me it's almost identical to Sanda in closed mask and mma gloves. I'm not expert though, but i think it's much closer to kickboxing/Muay Thai, than for Wushi skillset. Kudo/Combat Sambo rules are more Wushu relevant

Tiger Claw with a well conditioned bare knuckle hand is pretty nasty. It's not emphasized in competition because it's a "dirty" attack. It gouges orbitals, nose, etc. You absolutely CAN use it when you drill it enough and pressure test, but you gotta put in work. And if you're wearing wraps and gloves, it doesn't make sense to use it as much. If you think it's not real, go visit Sifu Don Hamby in Los Angeles, and let him land a Tiger Claw on you lol; you'll open your mind to it real quick. Want a video example? Onassis Parungao, a fighter from the early day bare knuckle UFC days, fought in those NHB UFC bouts TWICE and won both by finish. He Tiger clawed one of the guys in the eyes and immediately followed up with fast punches, a takedown and strikes from top position. Onassis is a Hung Gar/FMA fighter (he also used to spar with Cung Le regularly in the 90s).

@@Muay-MMA No lol, Kungfu doesn't mean only "dirty fighting". It contains dirty fighting methods, but it also has plenty of "sport friendly" techniques too. There are 150 plus styles of Kungfu out there lol. It's extremely vast. The key here is to adapt your Kungfu method to whichever sport format you compete in. If your focus is self defense, then yeah you can and should train the dirty stuff too.

Real application of CMA is not sport centered it is combat oriented, if you are looking to sport you are looking at the wrong place, if you want to do that box and do Savat.

@@metrolinamartialarts I think it is funny that modern sportsmen assume when I say these thing that I don’t mean train with contact, or don’t train with opposition, I mean do those things, you and others will be injured without rules, without the safety equipment, but you will learn, this is how soldiers train, not actors, not “sportsmen” that want to relive their glory days. Real combatives that is the root of CMA. If you haven’t been taught these things you are either afraid, or your teacher doesn’t trust you.

@@metrolinamartialarts I should maybe apologize, done martial arts for many decades with military people. I have seen a lot of people make assumptions about training and applications that got them injured and in a couple of cases killed. Sport is not combatives, “fun” is one of several important reasons to do martial arts, but not the most important, unless you are running a business for the public. Confusing sport and combatives can be a horrible, dire mistake in a true emergency. I think you are probably a nice guy, sorry if I gave offense.

@Ziggy Dog sorry - the number 1 reason to train is fun. Maybe not to start, but definitely why you keep training. Combatives is cool and all but like, sport is a measure of veracity. Like sparring. Without it it becomes choreography. I get what you're saying, but no one was attacking CMA here. It's a video about CMA full-contact competition and how fun it is.
