My 2nd grade music teacher taught us this song, which she played on her auto harp. That was almost 60 years ago, and I still remember it. I don't remember her name, but she taught us Molly Malone, Loch Lomond, and I Gave my Love a Cherry.

molly malone is actually a scottish sang. written by james yorkston as a music hall sang poking (friendly fun ) at the irish.

In Dublin's fair city Where they touch Molly's titties ..... because it brings "good luck"! I guess the Irish are quite superstitious?

Who was the sculptor? Appropriately a Dubliner, Jeanne Patricia Rynhart (1946-2020) , nee Scuffil, and according to her photo, a pretty colleen.

This song has been used by football (soccer) fans for a long time! They just change the town name, and change the song after; "...through streets wide and narrow, singing..." at which point another chant is essentially tacked on the end to imply Ms Malone is chantting for their team! This was actually the first version of this song I heard as a boy, being sung at Home Park, the home of Plymouth Argyle (a club that definitely should have more importance for US soccer fans)! Wonder if 'this version' of the song actually started at one of the several Dublin clubs?

I have done my research as to wether she was real or fictitious and my conclusion is that young men have always immortalised beautiful ladies in song so yes she was real plus there is the record of a Molly Malone passing away in 1699. Great song along with many more Irish ones .Professor Ken.

Most groups - like the Dubliners - turn this sad song into a sing-along waltz-time hack for tourists. The whole point of the song is missed. :( At least U2 and Sinead managed to convey the sadness of "That's how I lost my sweet Molly Malone"

Do I think there was a fishwife named Mary or Margaret who was called "Molly" in 17th/18th Century Dublin? Probably, almost certainly yes. Do I think one individual can be connected to this song? If there is any evidence for this, I haven't seen it.

How can the song be the unofficial anthem of Dublin when it was written and published by a Scotsman?
@JamieVauxnut1 Жыл бұрын
A land down under could be seen as the unofficial anthem of Australia, its was written by a Scottish man but its not really relevant . There's nothing to say that even official national anthems need to be written by natives

Maybe Molly is real person, I don't know. But she is always a symbol about the poor Irish folks, their hard life and starving in historiy. I love her story, but I' ll never touch her woman parts. This seems me disrespectful !
