The most intriguing part about all this is how we've been crafting this complex lore behind the intern and how there have been multiple ones in the past that all got fired for different mistakes, including the youtube intern who got fired for posting We're So Back on accident, and are now at the point where they've essentially run out of interns to fire and have replaced them with a soulless husk

This fictional intern has been getting the real life intern experience, where they're just doing their job and what they're told and get so much shit for minor mistakes that are often not their fault that they stop enjoying their job and it shows in their interactions with customers. The splatoon twitter fictional intern dealt with enough karens that they stopped having a personality.

I've always felt that in moments like this, and other moments when a mistake is made on social media. Some folks aren't angry about the mistake, but looking for an excuse to feel justified in their bullying. I've definitely made a lot of "intern shot out back" jokes before, but I sorta share the same thoughts of the people who first noticed the drier tone, yknow, what was wrong with them? Were they doing okay? Cause obviously the errors have been getting more prevalent and frequent ever since Splat 3 started but i doubt whoever runs the account has swapped around much. I didn't notice those people who just kept harassing them about these mistakes, and it does make me a little sad. But.. well, such is Twitter, unfortunately. Respect the intern. Even if they aren't exactly the one-man band we assume, which we'll never know for sure, employees who handle social medias rarely deserve the harrassment.

I started thinking about this a couple days ago because I noticed that Dude, in particular, started posting patronizing replies under nearly every single weapon kit post this week. At first, it was probably a fair and valid bit when the NA page had fallen days behind with the announcements. But then even after they course-corrected and started crossposting on schedule, he kept making comments giving condescending praise and poking fun at the intern's job security, and it just started to feel mean-spirited really quickly 💀 Like this top-level Splatoon influencer was just farming for laughs from his followers more than anything. Okay, the "Dangsam Bomb" is a hilarious mistranslation. It literally read ダ da instead of what was actually written, タ ta, something a human might mistake if they don't look closely enough but a machine absolutely should not, and when you change that, タンサン tansan is a katakana writing of 炭酸 tansan which means carbonation. An actual correct machine translation would probably have given Carbonation Bomb, which would make it pretty clear it's Fizzy.

I don't use twitter, I just check the splatoon NA/JP accounts and maybe a few comments, so maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think ppl were intentionally being mean at the "intern". Most of them, anyway. I just thought especially with things like the "One or more interns have been fired" thing that it was just a joke of "damn its jover for them 💀" and stuff, but it never really occurred to me that it does probably get to whoever is running that account seeing constant "oops another error!!". In relation to this i think about how the stamper noveau was branded as neo stamper by splatdevs themself IN the game despite the noveau sticker clearly being on it. However, not only did ONLY the NA account operated by said intern get flak for it when they posted what they believed was correct (and “proven” to be so with the in game release by its name) , but when it was updated and changed silently in a patch later from neo splatana stamper to splatana stamper noveau, absolutely NO ONE mentioned it or even called that out to any degree. Further proving to me that people do NOT care about correction and simply want to publicly humiliate the social media rep who’s an easy target

For the "drier tone" stuff specifically, it's not exactly a new trend. SRL used to be based on Tumblr, ran art competitions, and engaged with the community's posting as much as making their own. They slowed down doing that over S2, and dropped it entirely just before S3, with the account being now defunct. It's par for the course, and I suspect is probably due to internal shifts on handling promotion.

I think it really needs to be understood by people the amount of trash that people can spew on the internet, and how meaningless listening to that is. On learned helplessness: I will say that keeping people out of learned helplessness with criticism while also seeking to make them improve is not the easiest thing. Ego can be a big impediment to progress, and in my school's marching band, I think one of the hardest balances my band director had to find was keeping the students' egos in check enough so that they could receive and implement the feedback, while also not having too much negative feedback that would demoralize the students and lower productivity. He understood that there is only so much negative feedback one can take before it stops becoming useful, but also that coddling to a certain point also slows improvement. The feedback we received was public, in front of all the other students in the band. Why I think it worked there was because if a certain student got called out, it didn't lead to a dogpile like on the internet because everyone else was there to fix their own mistakes and get better; they were in the same boat as that specific student. This even happened in an English class I took in High School. We actually did some form of peer reviewing essays, though the author remained anonymous. Obviously, this requires a lot of trust and maturity to be implemented well (that could not be universally present enough at the middle school age), but I would not call that a private environment, and I personally found it useful to learn about my writing from people other than a teacher.
@o0Fizzle0o

I was really hoping you'd make a video on this topic, so I'm extremely glad to see this. The constant dogpiling has been genuinely upsetting to see, and so many people are taking it way too far way too frequently. It just breeds toxicity; especially when some users seem to think of what I would call actual bullying as a "bit" and keep beating the dead horse because it's giving them engagement. They see a number go up and suddenly their brain turns off and they become a mindless machine trying to farm the exact same gag for those couple little dopamine hits without ever thinking of the actual environment that they're creating in the process. Anyway, your video sums up my exact thoughts perfectly so I'll leave it at that. Having a genuine mature voice in the community with actual reach is something that is really, really nice to have- so thank you for continuing to do what you do.

13:15 I don’t know if them thinking they want to correct the behavior makes it any better though. If they want to correct a person’s behavior and argue that putting the person in stocks is the way to do it, then maayyybeee they actually just want to throw rotten tomatoes at them and just havent admitted it yet. I’ve seen this a lot online. Mocking and hurting people is looked down upon, so some people like to dress it up with “holding someone accountable” to make their actions acceptable. But imo it’s obvious when this is happening, because when it is there isn’t any effort to self reflect on whether the punishment actually does anything useful. Sometimes there’s even outward rejection of that self reflection.

There are so many people on this planet, who are all able to interact with each other at any time, so much so that just about every conversation has been done before. By engaging in social media conversations at this point, you are just rehersing atop treaded ground. This thing was said 6 months ago, Or It's time to remind somebody that this event happened last summer. I agree people took it too far. . . however I do question how an official account so regularly got things wrong. Like, how does one not have the information they are supposed to putting out publically directly in front of them? One error or two through the history of the game? Chalk it up to mistakes happen. . .consistently getting something wrong across so many updates? I have to wonder if the person running the account even cares about the material they are covering. Media presence in this day and age for companies in important. Consistently putting out false information regardless of how quickly it is corrected looks sloppy and like the media team doesn't care. Yeah, sure, we'll see the real kit in game when it releases. . .that isn't the point though. What happened to double checking your work before turning it in? In the sense of an official media presence. . .it feels like they are just doing a 'one and done' tweet without doing a single passover or checking what they are posting. Which seems completely unprofessional in the case of a sizable company who. . .in many other ways curates their media presence very carefully.

I do like the joking about the intern but yeah it's become a distraction from what i think is a real issue; that nintendo of america is really lacking attention to detail with splatoon's localization and publicity. We don't see such a huge discrepancy in other games' announcements. I have to wonder if it's related to how much new content we get regularly? There's something to be said about the way these mistakes contribute to a general distrust of the localization team especially for those of us who interact with the lore of the game more. It's easy to see these mistakes and second guess the accuracy of more important translations like those in story mode. the localization for this game has honestly been pretty decent aside from some Choices that were made prior to splatoon 3 that were carried over (captain/agent 3 being stinky lol) and some odd puns they decided to make. the issue with allowing the official social media account to make mistakes like these is not really about making sure to put out correct information about the new features, but about building trust and confidence in the localization team to give us a high quality localization in other areas, correctly characterize important characters and to make sure that there isn't a massive discrepancy in the way we experience the game in comparison to the Japanese speaking players. Sorry for the wall of text lol. TLDR; its about trust, not weapon kits.

If they were sick, I can't imagine coming back and making a mistake to be met with a torrent of people pointing out that mistake would have been very fun. I'd like to think I didn't feed that particular monster, but I have definitely fed other ones in the past for dumber reasons.

Here’s my mega-ultra-hopium-not-gonna-happen-but-would-be-sick theory: The intern running the Splatoon Twitter account is a canonical Ink/Octoling in the game and were grayscaled by Order. My case for this is that it seemed that it was only after the release of Side Order that the personality in the tweets have faded for more basic descriptions. There will be an update to the game that will make you go into the Spire and restore their Palette. You can choose any main weapon out of the 12 Palettes, but you get no hacks throughout your run and the length and difficulty of the climb is much higher, with increased speed and HP from enemies, extra abilities or attacks from bosses like Overlorder using a Splattercolor Screen to temporarily disable your chips, and the floor amount being increased to 50 instead of the usual 30. Once a certain percentage of Side Order players completes this extra difficult “SRL’s Palette”, the Splatoon Twitter account will make an announcement that they don’t understand why, but they’ve suddenly been hit with a wave of energy and excitement, and make a massive comeback by personally revealing the release of third kits to the game with renewed vigor and their jokes we all love. Again, this will never happen and it’s likely just a real life intern being burnt out by expectations from higher ups and is just trying to meet their quota, but it would be really cool to add more explicit interaction between the game and the real world.

I think a lot of the people calling out "the inter" in this season's tweets aren't even talking about the SRL intern character. They read more like calling out a hypothetical Nintendo intern that would actually be in charge of the Nintendo account. On a semi-unrealted note, Dude's comments in particular felt hostile to me for what is a very minor mistake.

Twitter being Twitter as usual… I’d be feeling pretty bad too if thousands of strangers ridiculed me for making a mistake, most people though wouldn’t understand that and throw their fits anyway.

A side detail that frustrates me with all this "intern" talk from the people joking about firings is like...the person running the social accounts isn't an intern, almost by definition? "Social Media Manager" is a PAID position in many if not most companies these days. Whoever made those erroneous posts isn't "just an intern" and absolutely is worthy of more respect, but also, unpaid interns (so, interns) are usually new to the field and absolutely are worthy of softer communication as they're literally still learning. Every time I see this backlash people have over social media errors, I can't feel anything but anger towards them. Like, the correct thing has been posted, shut up already! I'm gonna say it. What's happening to @SplatoonNA on Twitter is cancel culture. Or at least something similar to it.

you just know someone somewhere is watching this video about how it's wrong to rail on whatever random innocent person happened to make a harmless mistake, internalizes it enough to feel bad about their prior actions, and the response they come up with is going to be "Man this guy sucks, we should doxx him" The anonymous internet has bred a unique form of sociopathy.

my personal theory is that I think the “funny inturn” tweets have been delayed because they need to go through a process of some kind to be accepted before posting so thats why they are delayed. but currently since people are complaining so much, they’re trying to make more direct translations from JP instead to speed up the process.

I think characterizing people who are genuinely upset as just wanting to throw rotten fruit is super bad faith. It's annoying to know that a kit you thought would be good is suddenly worse because of an error. I think if it were the difference between Fizzy Bomb and Splat Bomb not a lot of people would care. It's the fact that Ink Mine is so irredeemably awful that it makes this mistake way worse.
@Sqwivig

I feel like this video is missing some context. I don't spend my whole life on Twitter like you degens, which means I don't even know why people are upset. You mentioned there was a mistake with a sub weapon or something? But that doesn't tell me the whole story. Gem, PLEASE understand that not everyone is going to be in on what's happening. I have a real life and I don't really care about any of this crap. Just say "hey don't bully low level interns on the internet" and move on. You aren't going to change the bullies' minds anyway. No amount of asking them to be empathetic is going to change their behavior. Just condemn them and then ignore them. You making this video is just putting fuel on a fire. They WANT the attention. Don't give them the attention they are looking for. I don't really get why this video needed to be made, and why it's so long winded. I get it. Bullying is bad. You don't need to belabor the point.
