You should also read about the Border clans - families who held little loyalty to either crown. They had a big impact on the efforts of both England and Scotland. Thanks for the episode!

@1:23:00 John of Gaunt isn't the principal ancestor of the Lancasters and Yorks, it would be the Lancasters and the Beauforts. And it's through the Beauforts that the Tudors get their claim to the throne. Also the Beauforts are essentially the Blackfyres of the War of the Roses is because all the Beauforts were born before John married their mother, who was his mistress for years. The Yorks get their name from John's younger brother Edmund of Langley, Duke of York, but their claim to the throne from Edward III's second son Lionel, Duke of Clarence, whose only child was a daughter who married a Mortimer. However, John of Gaunt is an ancestor of Edward IV and Richard III through their mother Cicely Neville. Because John's daughter Joan Beaufort was the second wife of Ralph Neville and they had 9 children together (Cicely was the youngest), in addition of 8 children from Ralph's first marriage. And all those Nevilles from Joan married into all the principal houses of the Wars of the Roses except the Royal Family though they were all nephews, nieces, and cousins to the Lancasters. But it gets more interesting because while Ralph's title went to his eldest son by his first marriage, Ralph ensured the rest of his possessions went to the children of his second marriage. So while the Nevilles from the 2nd marriage sided with the Yorkists until the Kingmaker decided to turn against Edward IV, the Nevilles from the 1st marriage sided with the Lancasters because they wanted their inheritance back. So the Wars of the Roses just wasn't a conflict between branches of the Royal Dynasty, it was also a Neville civil war, and it was part of a long running feud between the houses of Neville and Percy. Henry IV gave his half-sister to Ralph Neville because one of Henry's principal supporters against Richard II were the Percys. The Percys and the Neville had a long feud with one another (think Blackwood-Bracken), so Henry decided to balance the power of the Percys by giving the Nevilles a tie to the Crown. And because Joan Beaufort had so many children, one of her daughters eventually married a Percy. So yes technically John of Gaunt is an ancestor of the Lancasters and the Yorks but he was an ancestor to almost everyone important in the Wars of the Roses as well as members of the Portuguese and Scottish Royal Houses at this time, though most are through his Beaufort children.
