You made this thoroughly hilarious. Out of six standard cochins, I ended up with five roosters and made the mistake of naming them! It would be so awkward to have PeeWee and dumplings, Dozer noodle soup or Lacey pot pie but they can’t all stay and they’ve had a great life, lol!

Good morning, I enjoyed your video immensely it brought back a lot of memories. Like you I have many many stories to go with my turkeys. I will tell you a couple of them. My turkeys also were free-ranging but not by choice. I built them a nice Coupe. When I got into turkey's I was told by an old farmer half the turkeys will die before you put them in the freezer. So I decided that I wanted 15 turkeys with the math of half of them dying I got 36 turkeys. None of the turkeys died I put 36 turkeys in the freezer that fall LOL. Is the funny story like you the turkeys where everywhere at. But I had a pile of lumber on my porch because I was still building our home. All 36 turkeys would get up on that pile of lumber in one at a time they would fly at the living room window hit the window and slide down every night it was hysterical. The other fun fact is that they would hang out in the middle of the road sitting on the yellow line LOL even with this foolish Behavior I still didn't lose any turkeys. I could go on and on and on as I'm sure you know very well about raising turkeys. What I have to say I raised turkeys ducks chickens and pigs also had a cow every once in awhile. The turkeys were the most fun. When we came home at night after work we would turn the car off and the headlights and Coast into the driveway so the turkeys wouldn't hear us because all 36 turkeys would come out and surround the car to enjoy that we was home. My wife was a city girl at that time we're still married 40 years later but it was so funny to see her run to her car in the morning because 36 turkeys was chasing her. Lol I tried to tell her they just wanted to say goodbye as she drove off to work. Tom

They definitely lived their best lives on your farm and lived their lives on their terms. They only really had one bad day (butchering day) and are serving their intended purpose. I really did enjoy them and look forward to the next batch. Thank you for another great video E!

When did they first start free roaming 😂 I discovered your video after researching letting my turkeys free roam. I’m not worried about the neighbours as they are far enough away and their Guinea hens free range 😂
@aprilmorris4588 Жыл бұрын
Same here with turkeys and guineafowl. My neighbors would be delighted if my birds ate the insects (most especially ticks as it's that time of year now) roaming around the ranch. We previously had a flock of broad-breasted white and bronze, but after seeing the frustration on both sexes due to their inability to breed without injury or death (seriously, one tom ripped open the side of a hen who had to be put down 😢), I have up and bought a bunch of Slate Blue, a couple Narragansett White, and 1 Bourbon Red. Next spring will be interesting when they, hopefully, brood.

I swear I was just looking to order some turkeys for next spring but I feel like I'm not ready after we had our extra rooster flock roam our neighborhood too. The neighbors got mad about them sitting on their car as well. We had to tighten our fences but with turkeys they just fly over. How do you keep them on your own property I don't know. Thanks for this!!

Turkeys will survive Winter just fine. They're pretty close to being wild animals. I live next to hundreds of wild turkeys... which look just like yours... and I live someplace in Montana that's so cold I question why anybody would want to live here. The turkeys wouldn't have it any other way though.

Can you clip the turkey's wings so they can't fly? Then you could keep them in an outdoor run.
@FarmerE2 жыл бұрын
I know people keep them in an outdoor run without clipping the wings, so i´ll probably try that next season!

There are turkeys that cannot fly due to their body size and they can only roam on the ground which may solve some of your problems. I think the Royal Palm is one of those breeds
@amer6706 Жыл бұрын
Royal palms are one of the smallest breeds, so no. Broad breasted white cannot fly, but they also have shorter lifespans because they grow so heavy so rapidly. That said, my free range broad breasted meat turkeys still try to roost as high as they can outside of their pen. sigh

Shame they were heritage. Could've kept them and bred them. I'd do brad breasted for meat. Better feed to meat conversion, ready to butcher faster and like I said they get way larger in less feed. The heritage are good for breeding and eggs. Could breed a heritage tom a broad breasted hen and hatch her eggs, and get a nice plump hybrid that's great for meat
