Netflix's Avatar the Last Airbender is about to premiere this week and while early reviews have been positive, there's still a lot of mixed reactions amongst fans who are either very excited or very concerned for the live-action remake. With recent interviews, I think the real problem with Netflix's Avatar reboot is that they're not willing to fully embrace the show's roots as a Nickelodeon show. They feel almost ashamed of the origins and light hearted adventures that introduced Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko and Toph to a generation, wanting to jump straight into the dark and gritty aspects of the story instead. Not wanting something to replace Stranger Things, but something that can compete with the likes of Game of Thrones. Let's talk about my concerns for the series and hope that I'm proven wrong in a few days!

Exactly. She’s supposed to be bossy, independent, and a sister who teases her brother. And also kind of a mother figure. But now she just acts like a doormat. And the whole point of tophs intro was to not like katanas Mother Nature so how is that going to play out?

You do realize that every studio does that, right? Every studio changes the amount that they advertise something depending on its quality. Madame Web that just released? Sony didnt bother to release a second trailer because they knew it sucks. No studio is going to sink millions of dollars into marketing something if its bad. Of course they decide that. Thats just common sense, not a problem that Netflix has.

@@lukedelrosario5881If something sucks, you know it and you have no faith in it as a product, financially or creatively...why even create it? Would save you a lot of money to just...not do it at all. It would also be no loss to Netflix if they had no faith or attachment to it anyway. What's the motive if they think it sucks and therefore will likely not receive much viewership...and therefore not turn much of a profit.

Just saw it and I truly HATE to be right. It's absolute TRASH! The recreated Intro sequence is laughable! The CGI Looks like shit, everyone's costumes look way to clean, like they all walked out of a cosplay convention and the acting....Please I implore everyone to pull off those nostalgia goggles and really pay attention. You would think that a Live action adaption would be made with the idea that it might appeal to a more mature audience and yet the script feels like it's written specifically with children in mind, with characters outright telling us how they feel, and providing us with exposition they shouldn't have to mention among themselves and here's the worst part...The cartoon did it better!!!! HOW! I just know everyone is going to love this because ''oh my precious childhood'' and I'll be years down the road waiting for everyone to catch up to the fact that the Original is superior and the remake only offered pointless changes and worse writing. I watched a few episodes and so far my impression is that is rushes way too much any form of character devolopment, the lore of certain events gets changed but not in ways that are logical and lastly certain charavters yes are more mature ...but feels far off from their original coubter part. Like boomie for instance , is very little like the original one. The mountain with katara and Aang was changed and doesnt even includes Aang.... But overall the show isnt bad , but it just has many little things that was missed script wise . Costumes and setting are great ! But the actual bending of many characters are underwhelming.

Why are they doing it? FOR FUCKIN MONEY. To take advantage of the Avatar name to "bring in" new people via live action even though in recent times this... Medium? Has been ASS. If they really cared they would have wanted to make more animated Avatar things either extending Korra out, tackling other things after the war, or past lives answering questions about them. I hope this is at least decent. If it's not good, I want this to be a gateway to the nearly perfection that is the original... Then I want people to spread the word on it, and to absolutely trash the live action by comparison. I just do not understand how this show can have perfection and it is CONTINUOUSLY fucked up, whether it's this live action bullshit or shit made games. Like I have a problem that an Indie game does the idea of bending better than actual Avatar games. No shade to them because I love the game, but like c'mon brothers.

Though I accept it’s not a 1-on-1 adaptation of the animated series. I am actually quite disappointed. Lets me summarize my thoughts after going through the whole series quality overall: CGI faithfulness to the series: 9.5-10/0 Casting: 8.5/10 Dialogue: 3/10 Storytelling: 3/10 Story Ordering: 2/10 😢 This is definitely 💯 better than the last live action adaptation. But it didn’t capture the essence of the story/legend of Aang’s team avatar. Dialogue is too direct and handholding for the viewer, the writing makes it seem like the show is for viewers who have never seen the original. All points that took a little longer to reveal creating a sense of intrigue in the animated series is just spoon fed immediately, I was just surprised during the gran gran explanation scene in episode 1. They should not have started the series with what happened in the southern air temple. Chronologically if they wanted to shorten things they could have added that to the end of the first episode with a cliffhanger ending. What this did is miss out on the whole portion that showed that aang wanted to be a normal kid and have fun as he did with Katara in the first episode, building that initial bond, until Aang had to own up to his guilt of abandoning his people. I feel like they rushed Katara and Aangs relationship. Katara through the animated series is the one who grounds Aang and gives him normalcy . Though the casting for Iroh is spot on, the dialog and writing for the character simply didn’t capture the quirky, yet wise and secretly super strong uncle Iroh. Personally I won’t be watching next seasons as the foundation has been set and it’s hard to course correct now. I knew compromises should be needed to reduce the number of episodes, but storylines could have been combined without loosing the essence of the characters. Every episode in the animated series ended with Aang and team learning an important lesson that kept them moving to face Ozai, the heart of the progression is lost. This is closer to the play during the “Ember Island Players” Episode than to the actual series. Furthermore I feel like this is a trend in many adaptations, too much spoon feeding and handholding, direct explanations, no intrigue, nothing to ponder and critically think about the plot of character dynamics. I don’t know who made the collective choice that viewers have low IQ and need plot and meanings spoon-fed, just do a lot of CGI and all good. I deeply miss the storytelling, mystery and intrigue and heart of the original. It could have been done, but short cuts were taken and it simply falls short. I hope at-least new people are drawn to watch the original series. Makes sense why the original creators left the Netflix series

What's up with Aang not bending a drop of water the entire season? and why doesn't katara need a master? she is her own master? in the original, she was self-thought and she was so so so mad at Pakku for not wanting to teach her but she still convinced him to teach her. but in this one she is her own master and she doesn't need any experienced waterbender's help to learn more? why? coz girl power? WTF...and why was Zuko so watered down? It felt like Zuko from the end of season 2 where he is finally accepting that his honor doesn't only lie in capturing the avatar. Zuko needed to be a lot more of an asshole for the 1st season. And why there is so little of roku in the entire season? Roku felt responsible for the War as Sozen was his friend and he has ignored Sozen's action when he was alive. he felt responsible for the 100-year war. This is also totally missing from the show. There is so much about this show I did not like...I really wanted to...I love the original series so much....when the trailer finally dropped I may have seen it 30 times straight. I did love some changes, though. I loved that Ang met Monk Gyatso in the spirit world. That made sense. Visuals, hand-to-hand combat, and bending were not that bad. Bhumis being mad at Aang also made sense. 6/10 from me. Despite this, I am looking forward to season two and I know they will change a lot but I hope they understand the heart of the show and deliver a better season 2.

True to the original!? Okay. So my dad (63) got a head start on it. He was a fan of the original. Some things may have been lost on him through a language barrier, but he understood that something was wrong with it. He started out saying it was good. Towards episode 3 or 4, he got fed up with it. I'm 30 something. I've rewatched the show a good hand full of times. I caught a couple scenes. ONE with Bumi v. Aang, while Katara and Socka exploring the secret tunnel(?). Two completely different adventures. I let it go even though it felt off. I came back later on to Aang astro projecting and taking Katara and Socka accidently. So technically, NO. Aang, in that situation, should be able to preform that feat bc of his spiritual connection, upbringing, and being the avatar. I know there are other people besides the Air Benders who have a strong spiritual connection but, there are prerequisites for something like that. I know Iroh too had a strong connection. My dad had a problem with the show sometime after that. I started watching it, remembering the few scenes, and said nope. I might watch it later to completely criticize the work. So, I only watched whatever chase scene was happening at the very beginning and had issue with the Earth Bender running along all willy nilly doing his Earth Bending thing. I don't know what happened but, am I remembering something wrong or did someone just not understand the source material? Did someone understand that these were just superpowers and not something tied to martial arts and the like? Why does it feels more like they're trying to ride on the coattail of the One Piece Live-Action?
@Honeneko.
@Honeneko. 3 ай бұрын
Nope. Couldn't finished the first episode. The show treats "bending" as just a superpower that takes practice to master and forego the martial arts or ideals tied to them. The scene at the beginning with the Earth Bender being chased, showed no tie to the philosophy we saw in the original animated series. The Fire Benders can engulf themselves in flames as if immune while making a scary bear stance and unleashing a constant flamethrower from their palms. Do their feet make the same claw while fire bending? Aang flies around weightless as if he has already achieved enlightenment.

i feel like the only person whose chief concern is that, once again, *ZUKO'S SCAR ISN'T A SCAR, IT'S FUCKING MAKEUP.* in the cartoon zuko's face was DISFIGURED by the scar, it has texture, it's bumpy, it pulls on his eyelid and his entire left ear is shriveled and discolored. i don't see ANY of that in ANY of the live-action iterations of zuko (or most cosplays for that matter). fact is if you're going to do a burn scar, YOU NEED LATEX. you can't just paint it on yey with eyeshadow or whatever. it needs to look like the hound from GOT or rience from witcher. you can color it darker _also_ but the texture and the facial distortion absolutely has to be there. you'd think for as many times as they give an extreme close-up of zuko's left eye slit it would have driven that point home.

The show exhibits notable potential, yet regrettably, the current execution fails to adequately capture the core essence of many characters. For instance, Soka's portrayal comes off as overly depressive, failing to highlight his complex nature and internal struggles which are masked by his jovial and sarcastic personality. It seems the show emphasizes his insecurities and father-related issues, overshadowing his layered character dynamics. Katara's characterization feels one-dimensional, akin to Bella from Twilight, lacking the depth needed to establish chemistry with Aang or Sokka. Edit: + all of the sudden she is a masterbender, with almost no visuable training or anything that explains why she improved so much since the beginning. Aang, while realistically depicted as a child burdened with great responsibility, appears excessively concerned, missing the balance of his lighthearted and playful nature. Suko and Iroh stand out as comparatively better portrayed, yet the latter could use further development despite the actor's commendable performance. Azula and her counterparts disappoint, evidently cast for reasons other than their acting prowess. The pacing feels rushed, detracting from the sense of a journey, instead giving the impression of abrupt transitions. Ultimately, while the show has potential, the current execution leaves much to be desired, meriting a 6/10 rating with room to achieve a 9/10 with improved character depiction and pacing.

I think they made a great cinematic show, but they totally missed the point with having the “childish characters “ for first season and took all the emotions out of the main crew and gave all the emotion to zuko . Which basically screws everyone’s character development later on in the shows, I could deal with them condensing the story line but they condensed out all the parts that I think made the original great. It’s easy to make war look scary, it’s harder to really show how everyone grew and matured through either living through it or from angs perspective of comming into it. It does the job if you’ve seen it in the sense you know what happened either way, but I think it looses that for a new audience I’m being what made it amazing and deep to the extent it’s still got such a strong fan base

To be honest they got the essence of the show. But it does lack the light-hearted soul that was present. In the original, soca's character was completely gutted. In s since his character, growth was erased. Aangs lighthearted nature was also erased for most of the episodes katara was mainly unchanged

A much better example for Avatar to follow is One Piece, as its largely almost 1-to-1 adaption of the anime minus the filler and slightly faster pace. On top of that, One Piece has some very sad and dark moments that almost go from Shonen to Sainen, primarily the backstories of Brook and Robin. Avatar could do the same and cuts its filler episodes, especially if its a low episode count per season. Either way, as long as its better than the live-action movie, the series in general should be fine. If its not, then it will just be quickly forgotten like most MCU/Disney Star Wars shows.

One Piece is not even close to be a 1-to-1 adaption - but they somehow managed to make it good enough to let some things slide. Ruffy for example is way to Guru like Sanji is to big (buffed) Zoro is to one dimensional Nami is yet to early to judge, but if they continue she will be to much of a woke character. (hopefully not happening) Ussop is to much relying on his looks, still funny tho but I had a vibe kind of "he had the most eaSy part and didn't really invest as much as the others". Mihawk --- everyone loves him but for me he was not that vampire like solopowerhouse but more frenchman whine drinking gaylord or something. Buggy was fantastic Arlong was bad, and I mean really bad. and so on

Mild spoilers of first two episodes read at your own risk. by taking sokkas "Sexist" remarks (tbh he is supposed to be a annoying yet over protective, goofy older brother) away just made him a bland Jerk with literally no good JOKES, and that also caused Katara to be nerfed down and not try to prove to her brother that she can be a strong woman waterbender. like there is no motive anymore or reason to go to the northern water tribe. also the fact of the matter is that the sexist remarks are based on the time era and the cultural normality's of the different nations and tribes. the Kiyoshi Island episode was kinda pointless and to long. like to be honest it felt more like netflix realy wanted to make a kiyoshi movie but wasn't able to due to the shear amount of kiyoshi name drops and focus on that avatar... im sorry this felt like a Ember Island Players episode.

Im a huge fan of the og series but this did not meet the mark for me. Why’d they rearrange it SO MUCH?! & the acting was terribly awkward/stiff. It looked beautiful but it doesn’t compare to the original at all. It’s more like “inspired by” Avatar Last Air Bender. It got too serious too fast! One of the BEST things about the og series was not seeing the fire lord’s face for a looong time, & they ruined a lot of the critical character development. The new series is beautiful but it’s just not it for me. It wasn’t cute & funny at all which is extremely important to the vibe of Avatar. Why didn’t they have fans in charge of this? It felt disrespectful. Like WHY DID THEY REARRANGE IT SO MUCH?! -also the way Aang talked was really awkward to me, it didn’t move me like the animated series when Aang would be cute or when Aang would be serious & heroic. The acting of the main characters was stiff af. Lastly Appa looked so dingy & dirty. I hate judging a high level of art such as 3D animation but he looked so dirty & didn’t look right to me. Ultimately I don’t like it.

There are a few things I could comment on. But mainly, too much exposition. They didn't need to tell us why Aang ran off. Number 1 rule in film making, show it, don't say it. Overall I did enjoy the series. But I'm not sure I can really forgive them with the watered down version of how they told the story of Iroh's son. The episode, tales of Ba Sing Se is nearer the end of the 2nd book. You've had time to get to know Iroh, to make a connection with him, to know he's an amazing character. The ONLY reason the episode in this new series got any emotional reaction from me was because of the music, plus the nostalgia and member berries from watching the original cartoon. I wouldn't be surprised if people who never watched the cartoon get no emotional reaction from this version of what was 1 of the most heartbreaking stories ever put on screen.

"ITS NOT GONNA BE FuNnY AnYMorEeee" Rational people: Makes sense, slightly darker for a larger audience due to the trailer we all saw before this, Aang is still having fun and jokes are being made, cool. Me: taking things from interviews with a grain of salt, they aren't just going to reveal exactly what's going on before the show that would be stupid, why are people so mad its not even out yet calm down Bumi Boulder DUmb PEoPle: "NOO ITS THE MOVIE AGAIN BOOO." "OMG WHY IS IT SO SLOW." "TRASH TRASH TRASH" Rational people: "Ayy it took one guy to move the boulder." "ok a bit off but the other clips from this fight look good and it might flow well overall but it doesn't undermine all the other cool stuff we have seen" "the arena is smaller in LA which would give less room for as much momentum and in the animated show after Aang hops the boulder Bumi gets an even bigger piece of earth that takes more effort so maybe in LA that is as big as He can go or will go at this point in the story." Me: Oof that's the worst thing I've seen in the promotion. love the rest though and kind of find it funny like an homage to the movie which id find hilarious Conclusion I don't really think anyone's dumb, just... passionate. yeah ill go with that 😂 but that's basically what I've seen unfold since the first trailer. They totally butchered the original animation series... It's all out of whack... Katara should be portrayed as a remarkable character who's independent and mature, even more than Sokka... Because although Sokka is older than Katara, Sokka feels like the younger sibling because Katara is more mature and takes responsibility like a sturdy rock, ... Sokka even mentioned in the original show that Katara's face is all he sees when he pictured their mother, because Katara's character took the role of their late mother because she's strong, caring, and motherly... Even though she's younger than Sokka... Katara's the glue that's holding the Avatar gang together, not the little sister that needs to be protected by the big brother like they portrayed in the live action... Absolute disappointment... This is the result of not letting the OG Creators take part in the story writing and character development of the live action... Absolutely horrendous 😡🤬
