The Real Reason Aldi Cashiers Sit Behind The Register

Aldi’s cashiers look pretty cozy sitting behind those chairs behind the register. But there's a more practical reason why the store lets their cashiers sit down - and it has nothing to do with comfort.

In Germany, where ALDI comes from, all cashiers sit, and (almost) all carts take a deposit coin (or chip). It's completely normal. Not just at ALDI --- everywhere.

My dad was the person who designed those checkouts, based upon requirements set forth by the Aldi Company. One of the things he did was to talk with the people using them to find out what he could do to increase comfort. One thing was to put the people on a platform so they would be off of the concrete/tile floor and fill that platform with foam insulation to help keep feet warm. He also put trim around the edges so the roller chairs bump into it and warn the checkout person that they are at the edge. He positioned the register so that it would be at a good height for most people. Representatives came from Germany and were quite impressed with his design. That was decades ago and it is still being used.

I wish all places did this! I work retail, and after 2 1/2 years of standing behind the register even with fatigue mats and restaurant-worker shoes with additional insoles added, I’m now undergoing physical therapy for lower back issues. I LOVE days when there are boxes of goodies to unpack and stock in the checkout area because of the bending, squatting, and stretching involved, and the replenishment team manager likes to save the shirts that need to be refilled and re-sorted for when I’m working because he knows how that kind of bending and stretching over the table helps keep my back more limber too. Between the therapy, at-home stretching exercises, and help like that at work, I’m improving, but first thing in the morning is still hell until I’ve been moving around for about an hour and slow days are pure torture!

The fact that being allowed to sit instead of being forced to stand for hours on end is "an unusual tactic" in the US is crazy. Here in the UK it's essentially universally allowed for those working the tills to sit while doing so (at least in supermarkets).

In a lor of stores, the cashiers are not just cashiers, but store employees that share other jobs in the stores, such as stocking shelves. Many are union members, but even with those that aren't, it would seem unfair to have one position in the store sitting, while the rest of the workers have to stand.

I truly appreciated this Mashed story. However, grocery store and other retailers are not moving toward 100% self-checkout in order to avoid giving cashiers chairs or stools. They are moving to 100% self checkout so that they don't have to pay cashiers at all!! They want to eliminate those expensive and difficult human beings. It makes for a much larger profit margin.

The latest Aldi thing here in their homeland (Germany) is the dual checkout: There are 2 bays after each checkout where the scanned produce is pushed to. While one customer is paying, the cashier is already scanning and forwarding the shopping for the next customer and pushing it into the second bay. Why? Because it eliminates the wait for payment. So each cashier is basically processing 2 customeres in parallel.

@@buninparadise9476 I don't know where you are, but here in Rheinlandpfalz Germany, of the 2 local Aldis, only one has changed to the new system, and that only about 2 months ago. The cashiers are still constantly telling shoppers to move on to the end of their shopping channel, because they don't realise that the dual output cashier system means that they don't have to wait for the previous shopper to finish packing. I have shopped in a lot of Aldis around the country in the last 40 years, and it was certainly new to me!

@@buninparadise9476 They existed before, but not with two payment terminals. You always had to get payment before scanning the next customer. Now if they ask if you pay with card and if you say yes, they start scanning the next customer while you pay at your terminal. So they basically scan most of the time and at full speed. Which is probably more like 100 Items/Minute. Which speeds up everything a lot.

Back when i lived in the UK every supermarket cashier (not just Aldi) sat down. I was shocked when moving to the US as everyone stands here. Also....back in the 90's at Aldis the cashiers knew all the prices no scanning back then at Aldi's, bit old fashioned it was compared to say Tesco's or Sainsbury's. You needed a good memory to work at there and they were QUICK too. My ALDI has one. About a month ago, I'm pulling in a guy using that cart and his family load up. Leave the cart IN THE RAIN. The guy was a tool. I tell the staff on checkout. I'm loading up my car and one the ALDI people come out. It's pouring. It won't move. I come over and say "I think there needs to be weight on the cushion" I was right. I suggested because it was raining to go inside, get a plastic bag, come out, put it on the seat and drive it back. The guy that left it, I don't care how handicapped he was. His wife and 3 kids were with him and he drove the van. One of them could have had the decency to help out the next person that would use it.

Being someone who lives in Australia I used to stand full time hours 8 hours a day on one spot I suffered from lack of blood supply to my legs and ended up in extreme pain from this. All because in Australia most workplaces have no allowed check stand with stools. I'd rather wait & get the service I am being charged for gratis. I respected it when it was to ensure 3rd shifters don't get robbed. Now there is no 24 hr markets-and they are taking away the registers for more ya'll scans-cause I sure am not. We lost many secretary jobs with automated-they took the baggers-now they are taking the cashiers & need far lessbpeople to pull carts due to machines-but prices are up a few hundred percent across the board? When did we get the savings for the sacrifice of service??? . I would rather see 10 cashiers than 1 cashier manning 10 ya'll scans-more jobs for more regular people. But we know convenience is an attractive lure to a human.

As a german I cannot understand why sitting while working is framed as "taking breaks" or being lazy. I have never a cashier standing. Difference to germany is also that the cashier doesn't put your items back into your cart, it's your duty to do that. Sometimes it's annoying if there are very slow people in front of you and they buy 30 things, don't put them away in their cart and then start searching for money (who could have guessed that you need to pay ...). I am faster than usual Aldi cashiers, and my stuff on the belt is already ordered, so heavy and big stuff that goes into my bag first will be scanned first, so I am done with packing my shopping bag and have my card ready before the cashing terminal is even ready. I love it :). Even better is self checkout, so I don't have to wait in line, because people still go to the cashier line.

The part about waiting to scan until it's all on the belt. I get that yes, the time from start scan to end scan will be faster for the cashier's stats. But the total time won't be any faster. Makes no sense to say the cashier waits untill all the products are on the belt to start scanning so they don't have to wait for the customer to dig through their purse for the money to pay. Either you wait while they place items on the belt or you wait for them to dig for their money. Kinda dumb advice. Let the cashier pick if they want to sit or not. They know how they feel. If they are comfortable sitting or standing is entirely up to them. Sitting too long is bad too. If the cashier is comfortable they will work better. Common sense.

Sadly, my local Aldi has gone the "self checkout" route. Often there is only one lane with a human cashier. I don''t usually use self checkout, because my order is normally about 25 or 30 items. The cashiers are usually quick and can scan items as fast as I can unload them from my cart.

Unfortunately, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most if not all cashier jobs will be eliminated in the near future. I went into a Five Below store last week. There are no cashiers, just one staff overseeing 10 self checkouts.

Technology has removed the friendly human interaction customers had received in the past because of rushing employees serving customers (corporate benefit) and causing employees to become impatient with slower (seniors & disabled) customers.

As a former Walmart employee, I can say that I loved my elderly customers . When they came it was a chance for me to finally catch a break. Especially when they wanted certain items rung up first and wanted to know the total after each item. Than the extra long good talks, I promise if I could have elderly customers all day I would have.

In general employees are not impatient because they are dealing with slower (seniors & disabled) customers but mostly because that same employee after he's done at the cash register he has to restock, clean etc. NEVER blame the employee, the filthy employers are ruining everything

I love Aldi, however, our Aldi put in self checkouts and took our all but 2 actual cashiers. If I have 1 to 10 items, I don't mind checking myself out, but most of the time I have a loaded cart and I will not check myself out when I have that many items. That is why I quit shopping at Walmart, because they only have just a few cashiers and all the rest are self checkout. I don't get paid to do that (I used to work in a grocery store as a checker and in the deli) and at Aldi's you bag your own groceries too. I refuse to go to Walmart anymore. I shop every two weeks because we live 40 mile round trip to the grocery. My carts are always heaped up. I won't shop online and go pick it up b/c every time I do that, they are out of almost everything I want, but if I go into the store,,,,,,there it is! Hello? I like a real cashier, not doing it all myself. If they want me to check myself out and bag all my stuff too, they need to lower their prices b/c the expense of having someone to do that is not there for that company.

They are great and I am always surprised when go other Grocery stores because of time, thinking that it would be a convenience go Walmart or Kroger. To found these food store are so much higher. I like they closed on Sunday to give their employees a day of rest. If If this company is considered of their workers just imagine how will they treat their customers?

They sit because they literally work so hard multitasking and doing other laborious jobs in the store that if they were to stand as cashiers they would likely collapse in front of customers, Retailers today are nothing but sadistic dictator's and ultimately it's their own greed that will be their demise.

In Uk all the cash register staff have seats. Have since the 70s including Aldi, SPAR, ASDA, all the grocery stores. Not new concept, and nope they aren’t as fast in uk as they are here at my local local Ralph’s. I think it may be more to a labor law or Europe just does it that way. But hey it made me click to see how it would be reported on this side of the pond!
