Automatic knives were invented not for self-defense but for the ladies. You heard that right. As old timey slip-joint folders could be really hard to open - therefore often called 'nail-breakers' - a knife that opened at the push of a button was invented to spare the ladies' fingernails. Sure, later on that feature was used in defensive blades, too, but it started out rather benign.

@@yeetskeetson8888 Well... the receiving party of a stabbing won't mind whether the knife was opened with a button or a nail nick, or whether it is a fixed blade. All they'll care about is blade length and how much of it the assailant is able to plunge into their flesh. That said, some automatic knives, more specifically certain types of OTF, are indeed less dangerous than other knives, because the blade tends to collapse under impact.

When I was a beginner with Balisongs, I was practicing my aerials with my BM Morpho 51. I missed my air grab and that weehawk tip went roughly 1/4" into my knee, hitting a major artery. If I wasn't smart and hadn't tied my leg off with a belt, I most likely would've bled out. This was an extreme case of negligence on my part, and have since put a Flytanium trainer on my 51. ,This is not at all representative of the community and I'm only sharing this story because it's relevant. With that said, I've gotten much better and my BM 87 is probably the nicest Bali I've ever used. I always seem to get way more into focus when I'm using the 87, since it's a live blade. Great commentary, sir. Thanks for the video. I agree with much of what you've said. I would also like to add, people typically fear that which is unfamiliar or unknown. We're pack animals and it's in our DNA. The balisong is a far less common knife and somewhat exotic to many non-knife folks. Additionally, few knife enthusiasts are willing to put in the time, training, and cuts to reach a reasonably safe level of competency wielding a balisong. These facts make the balisong rarely seen in public, shrouded with fear and mystery, as well as poorly understood. Plus, Hollywood doesn't help. Good guys carry Buck 110's and bad guys carry bali's.

I don't think people take that into consideration enough we are animals are instinct is as much of a pole for us subconsciously as it is for a dog or a deer we just had the ability to rationalize it and decide whether or not to follow but the Instinct the urge is still there whether it's fear desire sexual impulses all of it we're freaking animals

From an Australian point of view (They are illegal here also.) and applying physics to the story, a lock blade knife is fairly useless at stabbing, and most people using one for nefarious reasons know this, so they slice. The thinner blade, and sometimes questionable blade lock means the blade can snap, bend, or fold onto the holders fingers. After all, the knives were designed for cutting. They are based on older designs that were working knives. No where do you need to stab when cutting sheet, rope, leather, offal, ligaments... Meanwhile, with the much thicker blade, double lock that is as strong as the holder's hand, and the long thin spike like blade shape, means it can be used to stab, stab deep, and hit important organs. Stabbed into the solar plexus, it can cleanly cut through the descending aorta. Victim is dead. Stabbed in the temple, traumatic brain injury to both sides of the brain. Stabbed into the chest, pierced heart, even if there is a rib in the way. They are banned because they can kill, kill fast, kill effectively. Reality is, cutting roast in the kitchen with a carving knife is more likely to cut yourself than with a balisong. Damn, back in the 80's when I had two, with no online resources to teach me, but only Cacoy "Boy" Hernandez' wonderful book, I taught myself, and never once cut myself in the slightest.

@gaijininja 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianc9374 Consider this, if a knife works, and doesn't break, then it's legendary status is spoken about. But' if a knife breaks, it's thrown away, and that type is never used again, so it's negative aspects never get spoken about. I personally have never used a knife on a person, but I know from personal use in other situations, a fixed blade is best for stabbing, a lock blade is best for slicing. Yes, the can both be used for the other job, but it's similar to eating soup or ice cream with a fork. You can do it, depending on the consistency of the food, but a spoon would work better.

@@gaijininja well yes; but....you would see reports in blotter and news reports about assailants receiving medical treatment. I've witnessed, been and. . I alsoo have friends that have the same experiences. Never heard of it, not even with a slip joint. Most folding knives are 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 blade length and are going through soft tissue. Many murder have multiples wounds inflicted, your not seeing the lock failure your talking about. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just it's not common Doubt me, put on a chain cutting glove and grab some pork ribs, then see if lock fails.

As far as I know, they’re only illegal in Hawaii and New Mexico (and maybe Washington State). Wisconsin legalized them and autos in 2016. They actually are legal in New York as they were ruled in a few court cases to not be gravity knives (and the gravity knife law was repealed in 2019). They’re legal to own in Massachusetts but carrying them seems a bit iffy. In California they are legal to own but subject to the same restrictions as autos for carry (blades got to be under 2 inches).

In the uk the knife has to be 3 inches or lower and it's over 3 inches I think that's why in the uk they are illegal but idk

Back in the day every wanabe Ninja had one of these, they are now illegal for the same type of reason switchblades and throwing stars are illegal, they are intimidating, and became associated with bad vibes, hopefully the same thing will never happen to flipper knives.

My first Buck knife at 11 years old , Dad bought me my first Buck knife as i start Boy Scouts . .A big Buck like the Duke Boys tv show - Dukes of Hazzard. . I have small scars on my hands from that knife . It's no big deal . I wasn't careful.

First time I saw a butterfly knife, assumed the reason was cause people were cutting themselves with it. But then again, your right. You can get Seriously hurt with Anything and it's still legal. You can cut yourself on ANY knife. I guess the real reason is the intimidation of it.

im sure they are illegal because they are a concealed weapon and you can use one hand to quickly open it up, which of course can be very intimidating

Canada switch blades and butterfly knives are illegal. As a 12 year old kid back in the day (I'm 38 now) when I would go to my parents country Chile 🇨🇱 my cousin and I would buy beautiful switch blades and butterfly knifes probably cheap quality but they were really nice designs and colors and we would box them and make them look like presents 🎁 . We got away with it twice arriving in Canada through customs bringing like 10 blades each every time but the third time I tried I was 18 years old and the customs officer took me to a room arrested me and said they were illegal. Long story short it was Christmas eve they let me go but charged me with the title " Smuggling foreign weapons " that's what's on my record 😆 when police stopped me for minor reasons years after they ask what weapons did you smuggle?? They act surprised and shocked lol

It's legal to carry butterfly knives in my state, so I'm considering the Benchmade morpho. I really hope other states realize how ridiculous knive laws are lol.
