Harbor Freight is a success because there are so many people that are cheapskates (and I fall into that category, although less so, of late). Lots of their stuff is not "good enough", but junk. I've had a few HF tools. I have some that have lasted over a decade, and a lot that have broken on the first few uses. I think some is due to lack of Quality Control; some of the same tool will last, some don't function at all, but they all go out the door to the store.
@skeetmandoo3 жыл бұрын
Good enough isnt good enough is a fallacy. The phrase good enough means that it is literally good enough to do the job, not that it appears to be good and isnt. Harbor Freight sells new manufactured tools that appear to be able to do a job but tend not to, therefore not good enough. If reliable and functional isnt proof of a job well done then youre not looking for good enough youre looking for perfection. Some jobs require the best of of the best but an on site personal radio system need not cost as much as a used car if theres enough redundancy and you save money. If i hopped on my high horse and pulled out all the stops for every emergency job i've had to do it would cost exponentially more money and time than me or most other financially secure people have. My daily is "good enough" for getting to and from work and driving for hours on end. It wouldnt even be an option for many people who think a faulty gauge or non working seat heater is a must, but it is good enough that for me walking anywhere isnt even an option. Perspective is important when determining how much time and money is necessary to complete a job to an acceptable level. What works for some people in a daily perspective is totally unacceptable to others because their involvement in the project or hobby is more or less than another.

I came here to comment on the value and relatively low effort required to get the tech license which gets you quite a bit of additional (legal) capability from these little radios. Kind of the 80/20 rule thing. I also advocate getting familiar with your local radio club(s) and learning about their repeaters which can greatly extend the range/coverage of your little portable radio. But I draw the line when someone who knows better, or should, endorses this usage on a semi public forum (utube). So be responsible and don't lead people into an illegal act, because it makes you look irresponsible. Instead provide a legal solution that helps people and prevents them from illegal usage, even if we think that these radios should be allowed on GMRS freqs. PLEASE READ: First of all - I have no problems with any of your claims / complaints. There are plenty of us HAMs out here that love our Baofengs and Wouxans, etc. and have the same frustrations you discuss. The only thing I would add is to pay the $70, go to the FCC website, and buy your GMRS family license. There are no tests to take or anything like that. You get a callsign and all kinds of resources that will help you if you want them - all about the GMRS band, etc. which is where these little radios work great. You can't use these (legally) on FRS channels. Too high power, and they aren't designed to FCC spec "made for FRS". So it's technicially against the law to use these radios at high power on GMRS bands without a license - but, there are no tests to take and it is very much worth it. I would go into all the details, but I don't want to sound like a crabby old HAM either. Happy to go into detail on request. Besides, I know it's $70, but that license covers you and your whole family. It also lets you operate high power (50 watt) repeaters, etc. If you have the time/money, put yourself a little repeater down there ... you guys will be able to talk with the family / neigbors for miles farther than you do even now! It's tons of fun :)
@wedgejaeger3 жыл бұрын
So to be clear, I could buy/use a GMRS family license without being a licensed HAM operator? And it's legal? Or is it just "slightly" more legal?
@MandrakeDCR3 жыл бұрын
@@wedgejaeger That is how you legally transmit on GMRS frequencies. You don't have to have a HAM license, and being a HAM doesn't automatically give you the right to operate those frequencies - you need a GMRS license. The whole point of GMRS was to give the public a high-powered band that is similar to what HAMs use in that range, and not be limited by the FRS standard which is low-powered, strict hardware standards (the various walkie talkie type radios you get at stores), etc. There is no "slightly". You go to the FCC website, get a GMRS license, and you become the licensed operator. That gives you and any family member privileges to use the band, and it gives you the license holder the privilege to operate up to a 50 watt repeater that you and your family can use - crazy increasing your range. Also to be clear, members of your immediate family do not have to live in the same household. It's all on the FCC site and pretty easy to get to.
@artfisher16153 жыл бұрын
Actually, on low power setting (1 watt) they are within FRS requirements of 2 watts or less for channels 1-7 and 15-22. Agree they probably aren’t FCC spec. But, not sure how anyone would know or care if you’re within broadcast power limits.

⚠ ATTENTION.... CB radios are only useful and fun when you ignore the FCC requirement of 4 watts. Buy an amplifier and transmit 300 watts on your CB radio ! Make sure to buy a CB radio that has SSB (single side band) which gives you much more talking distance range than AM use on the CB radio. My favorite CB amplifier is the Texas Star DX 350HDV. Make sure to attach 8 gauge wire from the amplifier directly to your vehicle battery: The 8 gauge wire is available at Home Depot. The amplifier is available at Copper Electronics website. Legally you CAN'T use Baofeng radios on GMRS or FRS frequencies. GMRS requires you to have a license. FRS requires you to have less than 2 watts of power and you must be using a radio that has a non-detachable antenna. Also the radio is not licensed to be used on GMRS OR FRS frequencies. It's part of the same reasons you can't use a ham radio to transmit on CB.

Hello. I am a licensed ham (KE8KTL) and I own TWO UV-5Rs.... and love them! It's the Friendly Candy Company (FCC) that issues with Chinese radios. They are cheaply made, they violate certain parts of the rules which has earned the ire of some "ham radio guys" as being 'insufferable', I try to not be. I do want to point out where you misspoke in your video... this is not a criticism, just a clarification. At 1:52 you said, "GMRS". You meant to say FRS. That is the frequency range of the 'bubble' packaged department store radios. You do not need a license for the Family Radio Service (FRS). Only one problem with the Baofeng is the the antenna is removeable and herein lies a violation, but if you use low power and common sense when transmitting, you never have little vans with direction finder antennas anywhere around. Thank you for the very informative video. Stay safe, stay well.
@JacobAnawalt3 жыл бұрын
Often they do mean GMRS, which as you know IS a licensed radio service, because even those FRS radios include GMRS frequencies and run then at higher wattage and sneak into The Fine (print) Manual that a license is required to use the shared freq. because the radio auto increases power and to use the GMRS only channels/frequencies. Take that rule bending and double it using a field programmable higher power radio like bofang. If it’s intolerable to point out someone is breaking laws, hate on the law maker, not the messenger.

The programming cable makes entering frequencies/programming your radio MUCH easier and MUCH faster. Doing so manually (with just the radio keypad) is a massive PITA. Do your research though... pony up for a real BAOFENG cable (if you buy one). Some of the knock offs ARE NOT compatible/do not work (been there, done that). So far as licensing... it's all about receiving and transmitting. If you want to transmit (talk), certain bands require licensing (this is why HAMs get their panties bunched). Which is quite similar to you praising top of the line Stihl and Gransfors items and you not being caught out in the field with a Harbor Freight axe and chainsaw. Yes, they get the job done for those who do not use them much or for a short period of time, but the pros or those who appreciate high quality gear in that particular field would not touch them with a ten foot pole (There is a reason you don't see Baofengs out on the fire line or it other public service sectors), But if it fits your needs, be happy with it. I have some cheap Baofengs that I keep to lend out for very similar situations to what you're citing. On the flip, since I often overland solo I still went and got my ham license and put a decent set up mounted in the truck. If you're using a baofeng to chat with friends on rides and such, they're perfect. If you always have a decent size group, or don't go out of service or populated areas, they're amazing because they function enough and low cost upfront or for replacement. Just make sure you know what they are and what they are not. Every individual has to assess they're own risk and mitigation, and for me in my given situation they're just not trustworthy enough to be my emergency lifeline radio, but still fit into another role I use them for. Life is about balance, we all gotta find our own balance of time, hobbies, budget, risk etc etc.

As a HAM, I LIKE it when folks get into radio. Good for us, good for everyone. Yep some asshats are HAMS also, but please, dont lump us all in the same bucket, that is kinda rude. Also, need to check your facts, GMRS requires a FCC ticket. FMRS does not.

@Daltonleach113 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the radios you buy at box stores are licensed themselves. Instead of licensing a human being, they just license the radio themselves. So using an unlicensed radio on ANY frequency, without a license to do so is illegal. It is stupid though. The rules need to be updated

I just ordered the Midland 40 watt 12 volt GMRS radio and have a GMRS license. Are You Folks aware there are GMRS Repeaters going up all over the States, Plus the License fee is dropping down to 35 Dollars this Summer from 70 for a 10 year license. It can be used in the Vehicle or with a 12 Power Supply in the House. With 40 Watts on GMRS, it leaves those old CB Radios behind in the Dust! They are Tinker Toys anyway with only about 3.5 watts out on AM. Kind of like FRS Radios, more of a Kids toy with their 2 watts out and that little antenna that eats up most of that power. With GMRS you can put a High Gain antenna on the Radio and at least Double your Effective Radiated Power. Almost all of the GMRS repeaters are just a matter of requesting to use them for free.

I'm a general class ham and have two of these little radios, they are fantastic! The menu is a little wonky but you can program it with a computer using a special (cheap) cable. But at the price, you really can't complain.

I encourage everyone who wants to, to get a radio like these Baofengs and learn to use them legally. To be clear, you legally still cannot use the Baofeng radios in this video on GMRS. No, the FCC will likely not come after you for it, but it is still not legal, so just be aware. Even if you have a GMRS license, you still cannot use those radios on GMRS frequencies legally. That said, Baofeng and others *DO* make radios that *ARE* legal for GMRS, as long as you possess a GMRS license. The radios you get in bubble packs at the store are almost always FRS radios, not GMRS. They don't require a license *because* they are super low powered and the radio itself is licensed. Just because those frequencies are available on FRS radios doesn't mean they can be legally used without a license. That said Baofengs are fine, just know when they're legally appropriate and when they aren't. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone might have after watching this video.

Dont forget to program in a handful of emergency frequencies. Most are available online. I've had to call for Search and Rescue before on my radio in an area where there was no cell service. And you won't be hit for using it without a license if it's for an emergency.

I am a ham and would be most thrilled to welcome new people to the hobby and encourage them to learn. I feel that it is actually quite beneficial to go through the process of obtaining an amateur radio license to augment one’s preparedness, as I have. You learn about how radio waves work, how they propagate, and how to build your own equipment using low cost materials. This is, after all, what amateur radio is all about. It is commonly used as a means by which local groups proactively maintain preparedness “nets” and drills to ensure that communications are available to the public in the event of an emergency. You also learn about which frequencies you can use with each license class and how these rules are enforced. I have used the Baofeng radios and, like Cody, I feel that they are a great radio for the money. They will transmit on frequencies that are restricted to only licensed radio amateurs, however, so I would strongly encourage viewers to know what the limitations are and observe them to prevent from possibly facing fines for illegal use of the radio. In addition, one must ensure that they are transmitting within the confines of the FCC laws when using family radio frequencies, as the Baofeng can likely transmit in excess of the permitted power output for family radio use. In summary, a great radio but be careful to use it only as you are legally allowed to.

I work in radio/electronics manufacturing and I've been fixing radios for over 5 years now. I own a Baofeng, you should just know not to use them in an active radio area because it's too noisy to use in low power and the spurious emissions will jam other people. a Yaesu is $70, arguably simpler, and honestly way better in terms of noise and transmission characteristics.

The sad truth is that we live in a world where folks will not encourage you. People would rather break you down and tell you everything you are doing wrong and why your equipment is not as good as theirs. It would be nice to try to get into something and someone just offer words of encouragement. You know. I see you got this radio. It is good. If you ever want to upgrade, I found this radio and it offered these additional features, if that is something you may be interested in or could use. That kit you showed is pretty cool. I think I will look into getting a set like that for my close circle. Thanks for the info.
