It wasn't Burnes that made us 0-2 at home versus KC in the Wild Card. It was RISP.

Anyone with a pulse knows why Corbin signed in AZ. That is where his home is. His wife is raising 3 very young children there and now he can be home for 81 games a year as well as Spring training, it's not rocket science if you have ever been married and raised young children with someone you deeply love. The amazing part to me is why on Earth do people think the Orioles were entitled to resign him. We traded for him. He was a one year rental. He had no history with this organization prior to 11 months ago when the deal was announced on Feb 1st. People in this town are sometimes a bit delusional when it comes to our hometown sports teams. Good for Corbin, I wish him all the best! He is not in our division or league for that matter. Now lets get another trade done for Cease, Valdez, or Castillo. I would even be okay with Pablo Lopez as long as the deal was fair.

I think its the entire free agency people are upset about. People had the dream that our new ownership group would be aggressive in free agency and spend with the big boys. But it seems the O's still operate like a small market club thats scared to death of large long contracts.

@ I can’t speak to the realities of what is true in the universe of the internet, but look up market size, revenue, and money made at the park for MLB teams. Baltimore is not in the top half of most of these lists. Everyone wants an owner with deep pockets but it is a business and they do have limitations.

You're missing the point of why people are frustrated. The Orioles organization didn't say they were trying to re-sign Corbin Burnes. Their media all promoted false ideas that the O's cannot afford players in Burnes' price range, and they did things like criticize Corbin - saying he is falling off in stats - which is just ridiculous if taking an average of them over the last 4 All-Star seasons. If anything his first year of those when he won the Cy Young Award was the outlier (slightly). And all the reports were Toronto, Boston, and the Giants were essentially the only teams in on him. And Orioles' media did nothing to contradict that. Ryan Rip did say Corbin preferred his home area, which turned out to be true. That's great. But if the O's organization knew this, then they should have pursued other top free agent pitchers (who don't mind living on the East Coast). If anything the frustration is coming from the O's saying they are willing to spend on top players; this is the perfect time do to it, with their core young players on the team and still on their cheaper contracts; they have been winning until the playoffs - but then what happens is so far all the top players are signing with other teams. And then the Orioles media has all the prepared excuses again. And again. Also if the O's really did try to sign Burnes, then why not try to sign Sasaki? But already the O's media said Sasaki is impossilbe. The O's can't afford/outbid the other teams. The Orioles haven't won a World Series in my lifetime. They haven't re-signed almost any of their star players lately. It's becoming tiresome.

I'm still going to root for this team. Been a Marylander my whole life. I can be disappointed but I can also be honest that I'll be glued to as many games in 2025 as I can be....and 2026. And all years.

I can't help but think what if CB signed earlier with Arizona ,would the Orioles had been more aggressive in signing other free agents or making a trade ? Instead of staying in the CB sweepstakes .

They were SUPPOSEDLY aggressive pursuing guys like Fried and Snell and other names. But being "in on" these guys as defined by the Orioles compared to reality are 2 different things. A "club record" contract for the Orioles (24M a year would be), if it was actually even offered to any of these guys, gets laughed at and hung up on by the agent.

@@twondizzle8381You said that twice. But what he is saying is there is a very wide gap between what the Orioles consider a "competitive offer" and what the market dictates. Baltimore isn't NYC or LA. We need to overpay to sign someone. Just being "aggressive for the Orioles" is a way to always come in 2nd or 3rd place.

I grew up in Baltimore. Grew up in Waverly across from Memorial Stadium. I love the Orioles. These men have a responsibility to their families. Their wife, kids. Corbin has a home in Phoenix. He will be home for Spring Training and 81 home games. Plus the income tax is much less. Do a Google search on his home in Phoenix. You’re telling me you’d rather live in Maryland than there?

It doesn't really seem worth much effort thinking about why Burnes did not re-sign with the Orioles. He was only here one year and the team was simply not aggressive about giving him the caliber of offer that his performance merited. Offering less than others and expecting that would get it done was not realistic and they must have known it. No hometown discount for him, nor should he have to take one. Not a reflection on the him, the city, his teammates, or its fans. Meanwhile, Anthony Santander has been with the O's since 2015, has been the heart of the lineup and especially outstanding the last 3 years. Santander said he wanted to re-sign with the Orioles and yet it appears the team has not offered him a contract at all. Instead, they signed Tyler O'Neill - a slightly cheaper option with a one year opt out - to replace him. Yes, its a business, but if the goal is to be in the World Series in 2025 or 2026, we will see if this was a good decision. Even if all the young guys improve, I think the offense will miss Santander's bat and leadership over the course of the season. I wish they would reconsider and sign him. Henderson, O'Neill, and Santander in the heart of the lineup in '25 would be formidable. Heston - though promising - could then be part of a trade for a frontline starting pitcher. Of course, if winning it all in '25 and '26 is less important, then let Santander walk and give Coby Mayo, Heston, Povich, and McDermott the playing time they need to develop and see where it goes.

O's should now: Pay for Scott and Scherzer. Trade with Seattle for Miller, trade with the Pirates for J. Jones, and if possible; trade for Alcantara. This brings depth and talent for many yrs.

Explain to me how a potential MLB Buyer or Group makes it through the vetting process if they can't fund a competitive payroll? Even Peter Angelos made a splash by signing Palmeiro,Alomar, Davis,Meyers, J. Key, S. Erickson early on. There are other pitchers available right now and, I keep hearing Flaherty? That's like signing Dave Scmidt and overpaying him.. The O's get financial incentives from the city or state as the Ravens. Haven't you seen this same off season scenario play out over the last 26 years? Then the true or false story about Elias has the green light to spend but refuses. As for small market teams. If the new owner can afford the team, they certainly have an obligation to competitively fund it. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Corbin is gone not much we can do about it other than figure out a plan B. More importantly, will the O's do the right thing though and lock up Gunnar and Adley to long term contract extensions or has that window closed?
@dgobble2
@dgobble2 Ай бұрын
Disagreed because at the end of the day, money talks. Yes, home is important, but if the reporting is accurate, the Orioles offer was not even at the level of Arizona's. Baltimore is not New York or LA. We need to overpay to sign a free agent in most cases. We have a risk averse front office that looks rationally at free agents. The quote from Andrew Friedman is accurate. If we are rational about every free agent, we will never sign one. And by the way, this is not even just about Burnes. If it was known he wanted to go home, there were a bevy of free agent starters that would move the needle they could have pivoted to and did not. And let's dispense with the idea that this organization cannot afford a free agent. There is enough revenue sharing and national deals that the Os make a profit, even before looking at ticket sales and concessions. Not to mention an owner that bought the damn Magna Carta.

I said this last July: he will not resign here. Corbin just had twins, bought a house in Scottsdale, AZ, and wanted to stay close to home. Another qualifier was the tax rates, and you played, Ryan, so you are aware of this: Maryland charges 38% on the top tax bracket ($634,300), which all MLB would be under as the minimum is $740,000. Arizona has a flat tax of 2.5%, so it was a bonus for him. In other news, Arizona has a crop of money trees to generate revenue to supplement their tax rate. Couple that with federal taxes, you will end up with almost ½ of your salary going to taxes, including states like California who charge for EACH DAY you play/practice in the state. Ryan states it best: He wanted to go home, plain and simple. Put down the pitchforks, Orioles fans, put yourself in Corbin's shoes, and walk in them for one simple day: family first, family first. Plus, being Corbin, I would surmise he had Scott Borass (I know) reach out to Arizona and say "hey, he wants to stay in Arizona, make an offer." Corbin was a class act, and never intended to come back, he did what we asked him to do, and he is the first true ace we had since a guy named Mike wore #35, the last pitcher we properly developed. Thank you Ryan, I hope the fans understand.

Our pitchforks are out because this front office saw a bevy of top end starters and signed not a single one of them. If Burnes is clearly leaving, you pivot. Just look at the Yankees after Soto. Mike Elias looked like a novice GM in a room full of experts. That's why we're angry.
