I don't think it was that simple and I seriously doubt another candidate would necessarily win. 1. Biden was an albatross on any democrat. If you distance yourself from his policies, people ask why the party supported him. 2. Biden was kicked out too late. It would have been hard to run a primary, defeat Harris, come out of it with time to get the party behind you, return the Biden/Harris money, raise new funds, still have time to campaign against Trump, etc. 3. The democrats didn't have anyone that much better. Gavin Newsom? Nancy Pelosi? Anyone known would have carried baggage. Anyone new... would be too much of an unknown. 4. Policies. There is no way the democrats with a new candidate would have time for that candidate to solidify/prepare the party to shift on key issues -- immigration, women in sports, etc. Likewise the democrats couldn't afford to lose the ultra-left which almost assuredly would turn on anyone not continuing the hyper-woke path. I'd personally say it will take the democratic party a decade or more to have that debate under a new leader to shift. 5. Any radical policy shift still might not change swing voters as most would ask... if what Trump is saying about X is correct, why did you oppose it? 6. There are many things leading up to the election which likely switched swing voters -- going after Trump via clearly political legal prosecutions, banning conservatives, calling Trump Hitler, the media's outright lies, etc. I'm not sure any democratic candidate could have turned it around starting July 24th given even a quick primary giving them the nod by say September 1st.
