That last set against Spargo was not a fun time for Sonix. He was super tilted. However, the runback they had the next time they faced each other was legitimately the best I've ever seen Sonix play. He didn't camp or timeout whatsoever and just absolutely destroyed Spargo with pressure and really good neutral.

Ironic how the alleged "fastest character in the game" has the slowest most painful strategy I say if they were to redesign Sonic they should play into his demeanor in the show and games: cool, flashy, and VERY cocky The overarching idea I have to represent this is make Sonic a very heavy risk vs reward character, kinda similar to Fox but even more extreme. Make it so he can hit super flashy combos, which are the main source of all his damage, and he ALWAYS wants to be hitting those flashy combos, but make it so he has to overextend to hit them. This puts both him and his opponent at risk, cause if Sonic can pull off the combo without being swatted away, you get big damage, maybe even a stock, and a neat Twitter clip to show your friends. However, if he slips up, his opponent can get big damage on him, potentially even losing his stock. This rework weaponizes Sonic's high speed in an offensive way since his defense is so low, so instead of camping all game and trying to drag it out as long as possible, he wants to get the match over with as soon as he can and in the flashiest ways possible, and give his opponent fewer chances to plant him into the dirt.

2 changes i'd make to sonic. 1: You can't cancel out of spindash- They told us you couldn't in this game, but that only applied to shield canceling it. Should have been patched to include jump during the initial charging. 2: Homing attack having only ONE or TWO timings. The counter play to homing attack is spotdodge/roll, to make sonic bonk the ground. There are to many timing mixups and it's unreactable to which one he'll use

I think part of why Sonic's speed feels so improperly tuned is because, unlike in his series, there's no sufficient tradeoff of commitment to using it. Going fast in his games typically reduces his degree of control and poses a risk of running into hazards. In Smash, his control isn't impeded nearly as much and he already has other tools that allow him to not be committal. If his speed is a non-negotiable part of his design, there has to be some fundamental tradeoff for it, like slower frame data for his moves or a limitation to his shield/dodge. As it is right now, he benefits disproportionately when staying disengaged since he has so many tools to force and stuff attempted approaches.

Its crazy how the character whos defining characteristic is speed manages to slow the game to a crawl. Its especially wild because other really fast characters like Shiek, Roy/Chrom, Fox ect. Don't have anywhere near the same capability to camp this hard. Sure they can run away and have the speed to do so but their game plans force them to have to engage and interact with the opponent.

spindash should really have a cooldown or something but its more that in combination with it being + on shield, being able to act after upb, all of his aerials being fast and great without weakspots. His multihits also work, never seen someone fall out of them. Campy sonic is annoying but he also just has a lot of suffocating properties that dont really let you play the same game. This also goes for the other dlc characters kazuya and steve dont need an explanation.

The reason why people hate both Steve and Sonic is because neither will ever approach you. Even if they're losing. It's boring to watch and boring to play against. They're literally picking the characters whos entire game plan involves playing solitaire with a spectator.

A lot of Sonic criticism centers around getting the lead and then playing safe to hold the lead. How much responsibility is there for the other party to challenge that lead with risky option to try to gain back a lead? I’ve seen plenty of Sonix matches where he tries to play safe and loses the lead. I believe there’s a psychological aspect to sports spectating to root for the underdog, and we sometimes forget that we are watching two consenting parties who are in agreement to a ruleset. When there’s money on the line, why would anyone not play optimal? Pro athletes are theoretically expected to try their best to win, entertainment is secondary. Ultimately, if the aim is to yield as much value to potential sponsors, the ruleset is the greatest decider of how interesting the competition will be. The rules of esports combine the code of the game, and the agreed upon rules that one can customize per contest. Nintendo is done patching ultimate, so maybe it’s time to look inside the game to see which options will yield more interesting competition.

I‘m talking about shotos, Kirby, icys, incin, the list goes on. as a sonic fan (both in smash and of the series), i have a valid defense of him for sonix specifically, he is one of the most dedicated players. he studies matchups hard and prepares for every game, no matter the opponent. he plays optimally and consistently, and while his advantage state isn’t always “flashy,” it’s impressive how much he can string together and for examples like that game against spargo, spargo wasn’t approaching either. neither had any intention of playing the game. sonix wouldn’t approach bc approaching lost him the match (just watch that last stock) and spargo wouldn’t approach bc he was scared and had a lead. it was a standstill, simple as that i get why people see him as boring, but i can definitely appreciate the skill and time that sonix puts into him

The clip above just looked like he didn’t want to play to Sonix’s advantage and chose to effectively take him out of the game by forcing an approach or a stalemate. It’s entirely on Sonix for specializing so heavily in his campy playstyle that he was incapable of actually taking the lead there. Smash just needs a ruleset change. The ruleset as is enables these 50 minute snooze fests. The game being 3 stocks and 7 minutes just enables people to hold onto leads for the entire game basically. Watching any other FG top 8 takes like 2 hours max it's such a nice experience to sit through whereas smash almost always takes 3+ hours.

Sonic doesnt have any attributes that other characters dont also have. Sonic hate is mostly from low level players who dont understand the game. If you play sonic and learn how to use him, you realize sonix is actually an incredibly stylish and tricky player to watch. But most people have no clue what he's even doing to make those timeouts possible. I think people overreact when they see Sonic just due to their experiences, online. Like yeah, he's a campy character, welcome to Smash! You want speed, go play Rivals, or stop complaining, cause half the cast gets the most out of playing campy That said, I think there was one change they could've made that would make Sonic camp a lot less, and that would be to not let him jump out of Spin Dash. He can already mix up when he lets it go, there's no reason to let him cancel it entirely
