@juanzingarello40055 жыл бұрын
I don’t think getting rid of sedans is a dumb move because of gas prices. SUVs of today are much more fuel efficient that 20 years ago and have more variety in powertrain options like hybrids and 4-cylinders even small mini-CUVs like say Chevy Trax. Many CUVs have equally as good gas mileage as their sedan counterparts. That being said, I don’t see a spike in gas prices this time around causing people to ditch CUVs in panic. What may happen is a shift in people going for the more fuel efficient powertrain of the same model or downsize to a smaller CUV. What I don’t understand however is where they got this assumption that sedans are dead. I see new Accords and Camrys all the time. This to me seems like they felt they sucked at making sedans so they quit.

Don't wanna detract from your remarks; I completely agree. But I just wanted to clarify a bit. Firstly, as of September 2017, Ford Australia stopped producing cars at the wish of Ford global. The 5.4L was used up until about 2014 in NA form. The 5.0L supercharged "Miami" motor was used in the Falcon GT's. (Look at what KPM were doing with them on youtube tuning wise). Ford America (apparently) also took the molds for all the Cleveland stuff to end up creating the Yates cylinder heads etc, which left Ford AU without a V8 in a vehicle from 1982-1991, but only got a Windsor V8 in return. It's a damn shame they're gone. Ford had a Cleveland-style 6 cylinder called the Crossflow 6 (in displacements from 188ci to 250), the SOHC 6 (predecessor to the Barra), and the Barra 6 in turbo and non-turbo variants.

Sigrafix: Ford,GM-Holden,Toyota received.....like $23,000+ Australian dollars (from the Australian Government) for every car they assembled in the last few years. At least the Australians,took the Falcon and made it into a Mustang in the early 2000s...before everything came crashing down for: Ford,Holden, and Toyota. Australia is not a cost-effective place to manufacture cars.....and with the foreign competition offering so much better products....and end-Retail consumers getting a better deal...it's no wonder Australia's car manufacturing imploded. Ford sedan offerings in the North American car market are/were a joke. A $15,000+ econo shit box offering from Hyundai-Kia is still a better car. The Big 3 are in the last phases of annihilation...overpriced light trucks and Crossovers won't save them. If and when the Japanese and Koreans decided to once and for all decide to take control of the light-truck market....GM,Ford, and Fiat Chrysler are done......it's only a matter of time before that happens. Let's not forget,Toyota and Honda are poised to sell 800,000+ units of the Rav4 and CRV this 2108 calendar fiscal year....a number Ford,GM, and Fiat-Chrysler can only get in delusional dreams. Don't forget,Peugeot (2 years ago) took controlling Interest of GM Europe and have recently given GM a time-line of 4-6 years before they will no longer be able to use the Platforms and Engineering Resources. Peugeot has already fired the Americans,Germans, and UK upper management Responsible for Opel's predicament. GM recently has been trying to find buyers of GM-Korea (formerly called Daewoo);it's last resource of small-car Platforms which have been sold around the Globe as Buicks,Chevys,Opels,Vauxhalls,etc.. GM is basically dead now for Sedan Platforms (which can be turned into profitable crossovers). GM America does not have the insight or creativity to get itself out of the hole it has dug for decades. Another bailout from Uncle Sam won't save it form the cancer-like bad Management.

Wrong !! The price of the Holden Commodore based Chevy SS Sedan and the Pontiac G8 are quite reasonable $40.000- 45.000 range the problem with those cars were option choices SUN / Moonroof options color choices for interior seats carpeting exterior colors etc ... Remember that all of these cars ( Chevy SS also were all manufacturered and import Ed by Holden in Australia so you couldn't get a wide range or variety of options for those cars for American markets . As far as the car 's exterior look in my opinion the cars were nice looking and yes the styling was a bit subdued and conservative but still easy on the eyes In other words " a sleeper" but that's cool because it's a car that doesn't draw a lot of attention ( Especially with the Cops or insurance) So what you're getting is a car that half the price of a Cadillac CTS V series or a Mercedes, Lexus, Infinite, Audi etc.. with a CORVETTE 6.2 Liter v8 auto or sex speed stick etc .. So performance bargain fans rejoice get these cars new or used while you still can ...

Even when the "GTO" SS/G8,(GM lost money on every Fleet Police Cruiser) were sold here for a limited time.... most GM dealerships scared Potential consumers away with $10,000+ dealer markups. For a cheap Pleb car (with 1980s Opel Omega Platform origins)....scared most smart consumers to other outlets. Same crappy platform as the 2010> Camaro,CTS
@rodferguson35156 жыл бұрын
D McNamara Your are correct about reliably issues with Holden Commodores and their various sub models ,Holden Monaro ( Pontiac GTO ) was a cheap stop gap bandaid attempt to introduce a new model for Pontiac since the Firebird was killed in 2002 . Yes you are correct , the Monaro was a Aussie 2 door version of the Opel sigma " full sized " Sedan using GM 's Old "Zeta" platform .This car was also as you may know the bases for The Holden Commodore Sedan , Chevy Camaro (2010) , Cadillac CTS sedan / coupe/ wagon and Pontiac G8 Chevy SS . Yes these cars ( The models build in Australia) were not up to snuff quality wise due to poor engine and transmission standard that were not check for North American standards including CAFE standards which also drove prices up due to currency fluctuations with both the Aussie dollar and the U.S dollar . Agreed that the Zeta platform was an old platform that was about to be replaced by Alpha in 2007 which made The old Commodore and it's variances replaceable . Yeah I get that these cars were less than stellar but so were a lot of cars made 15 years ago..

Hello Brandon, AAA and other entities rate gas averages according to US regions. I think there are 5 regions 6 if you include Hawaii and Alaska which totally skews the numbers, Gas in the southern Gulf Sates Texas to Florida including Arkansas and Oklahoma is averaging 2.55 to 2.59. I just paid 2.59 there are some gas stations in South Texas that's selling for 2.39, However don't see myself driving 3 hours to save twenty cents. West coast, and the North East will probably be highest cost due to the insane fuel taxes, especially California. In 09 when the average hit 4.50- 75 some counties were reporting 5 plus for a gallon of fuel and 6 for diesel. The current average for April 2018 was between 2.69 to 2.79, depending on the site you visit.

It sucks how Ford dropped the ball here in the US when they were making it rain 5.4 4V Falcons in Australia. That looked like a pretty badass engine. Long story short, Ford saw the investment it would take to keep their sedans competitive in the US, took a look at the bigger picture and saw the market is dying out pretty quick, and decided it wasn't worth blowing the cash when they need to be spending money on cross-overs, trucks, and SUVs. Hopefully they keep their hands off the Mustang and the Coyote.

mchale20201 unfortunately, the Boss 260, 290 and 315 weren't that great of an engine in the Falcon, and got left behind by its inline 6 turbo sibling (and holden's LS1, 2)It wasn't until ford Australia put the supercharged Coyote into the Falcon that people became interested in the Aussie V8 ford again For less money, you could buy the turbo 6, spend a couple of grand and be pulling a lazy 350kw (469hp). tune, value springs and exhaust. Granted nothing beats the sound of a V8, but the pulling power of the Xr6 turbo, F6 or G6E turbo is addictive.

The hybrid and electric stuff is also taking a back seat, they use to pour billions into development for those but that is also stopping. People want Ford Escapes, Explorers, Mustangs and F150's and that's where the money is. FCA dropped the 200 and Dart for the same reason. Why build a boring sedan that people only buy if there's $10,000 on the hood when you could use that production capacity to build Jeeps and Rams that people actually want. Same thing.

Napoleon Einstein the crown vic is definitely a reliable and durable car than can take daily beatings and not even flinch, all while riding great. But it’s way too slow. It’s V8 was outdated even in 2003 when it was last revised. (or was it 1998?). Even the Marauder with the supercharger only make about 300 HP, underwhelming for a 4.6 V8 thats naturally aspirated. They should’ve given the engine more grunt. At least it sounded nice. Also the 4 speed auto made it worse.

Your argument is flawed. Sedans are not selling well. They had to shut down the Chevy Cruze plant because inventory is growing and not moving as fast as they'd like. Then you said you can't buy an American sedan with 400hp like the Genesis. Well, you are comparing a 6 year old Genesis. Today you can buy a Lincoln sedan with a 400hp twin turbo V6 for $35k which is cheaper than a Genesis. The '18 Genesis G80 is $41k and has 311hp. The luxury sedan market may be the only one that is doing well. Families are going to crossovers and trucks. The reasons we do not have cars like the Aussies do is partly our fuel economy/emissions regs but also American family buyers don't want hot rod sedans. In the U.S., sales of all kinds of sedans are tanking. Big time.

@halberto9o86 жыл бұрын
Bruce Leibowitz This is the story in a nutshell. It's currently a declining segment and the weaker players cannot sell enough units to justify investment in next generstion/redesigned sedans. It will be interesting though to see what happens if and when fuel prices at the pump keep rising and hit the shitfan. Where will our manufacturers that only have trucks and SUVs to offer be then? Maybe gone (or more bailout)? Americans tend to think in the short term, most foreigners plan for the long haul, whether it's automobiles or world politics.
@nephetula6 жыл бұрын
It's a great car, but you're talking apples and oranges. Genesis is a luxury brand, while Ford never was. The price on a new Genesis can easily hit 60-70 grand, and you can't find any Ford sedan that ever sold for that much. Compare the Cadenza with the Taurus for a fairer comparison. The real reason Ford's dropping sedans is that then can make twice as much money selling big ass trucks and SUV's to insecure, big ass people who rarely haul anything.

I know of many slightly older people who would constantly talk about how they missed owning those kinds of vehicles based upon just how different and cool they were. One reason why we always get screwed out of all the cool stuff from our domestic auto manufacturers based on my perspective is that they've always just preferred to be cheap and save money by merely selling us all their crappier car models that the rest of the world doesn't care for.
@patmcgregor93226 жыл бұрын
Well said,the car/truck hyrbrids you mentioned are called utility vehicles or utes for short as they're most commonly known.With vehicle production closed here in Australia I'll be keeping my car/truck hybrids (1 Holden 6.0 v8 & Ford 4.0 I6 turbo respectivley) for years to come..unless I ever find a 454 SS El camino one day lol

I'm assuming that this Ford you're talking about is also running the Barra engine? If so,I must say that I envy your vehicle options "down under"! I'd drive one of those so called "utes" regardless of whether it was packing a bad ass LS V8 variant or a Barra engine because I bet you could certainly haul some serious ass in those things! Of course,I'd have to wonder as to whether or not they come with a good ol' fashioned manual transmission or not,but in the case of some of these vehicles,I'd probably be willing to make an exception in this case.

We've had the Falcon's since 1967 but they sadly went out of production in 2015... not enough sales. The 1971 Falcon GT HO with the Cleveland 351 is worth over $200,000 over here in Aussie land. The 5.4L V8 (DOHC) became available in 2003 with 350hp in the XR8 and ended in 2008 with 422hp (higher compression) in the FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) GT's The Miami motor (Coyote running an 8psi factory blower) came out in the GT in 2010.. they make over 500hp stock. The FPV F6 has a turbocharged straight 6 Barra (4.0L) with around 450hp from the factory.

This is why my wife drives a Daytona Edition Charger. Wanted the power but needed 4 doors. Getting out of my Mustang to travel as a family isn't so bad when the car performs as well as it does. Ford has dropped the ball multiple times with their sedans. I had huge hopes in the early 2000s when they first mentioned the 500. I hoped it would be a 4 door nod to the late 60s Galaxie 500 kind of like Dodge did with the Charger. (Yes, I know most people had a fit when the Charger first came out. I was one of them.)

My Mother-in-Law bought a brand new Fusion about 5 years ago. She had several problems with the car from the start. She is retired and does not drive high mileage. After the last repair, she traded it in on a new Chevrolet car. So far she likes it much better. During my 57 years on this Earth, I have owned a few Ford vehicles, Rangers, Mustangs mostly. My wife liked Mustangs. However, they were sort of money pits. Always needing repairs or something. Want a trouble-free vehicle? Go with anything Toyota.

I actually suspect some political crap ripped them apart from the inside, to make the working class Americans weaker as a group. Which is also why some rich people invest in foreign companies and then find a way to move successful American company's assets over to them. It's a war strategy via economic manipulation.

As a FG Barra turbo Falcon owner here in Oz, I had a chuckle. The Barra turbo is dead easy to modify and up the power and the stock FG turbo block and head can make 900hp with just valve springs. Going all out, the 4L i6 Barra factory block and head can make 2000hp+. Just how much power can you use on the street ? It's a shame you Mericans dont don't have the Barra and have to use v8s instead. Btw, the FG turbo (has barra) handles a lot better the v8 Coyote FG Falcon, as has a lighter front end. The Barra engine is only 5kg heavier than a Nissan RB26 engine @ 8:20 this owner explains that kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKWkkJWtaMuWh6s Ozzies love performance sedans. Basically, Ford and GM & Chrysler can't make a Honda Civic or Accord or a Toyota Corolla or Camry. They can't compete with the quality-reliability and design of those companies. Then on the luxury end consumers have found that Lexus is just better than anything made by Cadilac. I thought Ford was finally getting serious about the luxury Lincoln division with products like the Lincoln MKZ. Yet for too long Ford let its luxury line Lincoln deteriorate. For too long the whole Lincoln lineup even looked old to a 65-year-old. Plus consumers look at companies that stand behind their products. Toyota and Honda do. Plus ask any DIY guy that works on his own vehicles, or a mechanic that works on cars for a living, Toyota's and Honda's, for the most part, are well made and easy to work on. Mazda is a company that is consistently improving on its vehicles and has reasonably priced vehicles.

Also, I don't blame you on your Opinion about the Taurus. I cross-shopped it with a BMW 335i, Kia Optima Turbo and a Subaru WRX and it ended up at the bottom of the barrel. If I'm able to cross-shop mid size sedans with a full size one, it should talk by itself of how bad I thought it was. The Optima being FWD had less Torque Steer The Subaru AWD was far superior The BMW Interior killed it miles ahead The Taurus only point was being somewhat fast off the line, if the torque steer didn't want to fuck you over.

As some other commenters here have said, Ford is making fewer sedans and concentrating on trucks and SUVs because 1) there's more market demand for them and 2) the profit per unit is more so it makes good sense as a business decision, at least now. So, what could possibly go wrong? If you've been paying attention you've noticed the price of crude oil is inching up, bit by bit and so is the price of petrol. If crude goes way up again like it did in 2008, the demand for those trucks and SUVs will dry up and smaller fuel efficient cars will be in demand again. Everything goes full circle, it's happened in the past and could happen again. What's the upside? If you really want a truck, they'll be relatively cheap when fuel prices spike again.
@felipelora05056 жыл бұрын
100 % agreed , those sedans would keep there value as well

If Ford continued development of engine improvements, suspension upgrades, and more dramatic styling the Taurus SHO would be a competent competitor in the sedan market today. The SHO started the market trend of manufacturers building and buyers selecting a twin turbo v6 over a n/a V8. When it was introduced, it was quicker than a V8 RT Charger and supercharged Audi S6 V6's.
