You mean like a cartridge style oil filter? Or like Subaru with it on the top of the engine?
@nokieng65025 жыл бұрын
x2xtreme360 Subaru Outback (and other models I’m sure) has a top of the engine oil filter canister. Pop open the hood. To the right of the valve cover and next to the oil filler cap is the oil filter. Only issue is u cannot pre-fill the canister with fresh oil prior to installing like u can if the canister was screwed on from the bottom of the engine. Being top mounted it unscrews with no oil mess since all the oil that was in it has returned to the oil pan. I believe Porsche, BMW, and other cars have the same set up.

@heathjones70025 жыл бұрын
I looked at the Fumoto valve before I made the Valvo Max purchase. 2 things that made me go with Valvo Max. 1: Looked like the Fumoto was brass, I was worried that it would be susceptible to damage from road debris being soft metal. 2: I was concerned that the lever might lose a pin or break off. Maybe not the case in actuality, but if I'm laying down $30, and traveling as much as I do. I don't take any chances. I also keep the original plug in the glovebox, wrench and 5 quarts of oil just in case.

Same here, been using Fumoto since 2005 or 2006, on total of 4 cars (two of them I don't own anymore). When I first learned about Fumoto I found that they sold a simple clip you could put around the lever to prevent it from being knocked open by accident. I tried it without the clip, and found the valve never opened by itself. Of course I only drive on the road, never do any off roading. So I never bothered installing that little clip :)

I used to have a Citroën SM. Its oil drain plug was so large that it used a 17mm hex key, same as a Volkswagen Beetle’s transaxle plug. The threads were like 25mm. The oil dumped in only a few seconds. The Citroën transaxle was the same design as on DS/ID cars so it had more normal drain and fill plugs like 21mm hex head, 14mm threads.

I just installed an easy drain valve and glad I did. I never wanna deal with a service station or oil change station ever again in my life. They use to put that bolt on so tight that it would be impossible to take it off and change your own oil. Every car on the planet should have one of these easy drain valves changing your oil takes 5 mins it’s truly an incredible item I’m glad I found. Don’t neglect your car and it will always treat you good the first thing is religiously change your oil even if you use full synthetic oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. This makes makes changing your oil a snap.

Wow! That device looks very similar to what some of us used on the Oshkosh Mk.48 LVS, along with other vehicles & equipment. Back in my military days, (25 years ago) it had no official nomenclature and certainly wasn't a standard issue item. Apparently, it was acquired by some of the NCO Marines working in the motorpool who had close ties with the machinists. They were very proactive and constantly thinking of ways to improvise tools & methods to enhance performance of equipment, as well as workshop efficiency. There were a lot of Navy Achievement Medals earned back then!

You joke, but there are plans to make oil changes done with a cartridge type system. @robs18526 жыл бұрын
I agree! Depending on the car, the placement of the filter really sucks when you have to remove it. Basically side-mounted and near the exhaust manifold makes it impossible to not make a mess. The drain plug is always at the bottom and easy to control
@IIGrayfoxII6 жыл бұрын
Same. On my imp the filter is near the exhaust headers and that is where the mess comes from, normally a bit when unscrewing and the most when lowing the filter down, this is why I use a large rag to soak up all the oil.
@jeahya226 жыл бұрын
I come up through the bottom and have someone hold a plastic grocery store bag by the handles. When I'm under the car, just grab and twist the filter through the bag till it's free and have the person let go of handles so I can pull filter and bag down to me. Whatever mess ends up in the bag. Did that make sense?

@stanwood74275 жыл бұрын
A few issues to watch out for. First is the valve isn't as free-flowing as removing the original drain plug so if there is sludge or metal filings, they won't come out as easily. On that note, most OEM plugs have a magnetic end which pulls fine metal out of the oil. Other point is many mechanics and "lube and go" shops won't touch a third party drain plug for fear of being blamed for leakage. I have a fumoto petcock valve on my car for over 8 years, it works great, never leaks, but I don't have the diagnostic of a magnetic plug and I can't find a shop willing to change the oil as an option to doing it myself.
@BrianMcKinny5 жыл бұрын

@spelunkerd6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea. I wonder if it could be used in the situation where one has stripped the threads in the pan. Normal approach is a new pan, since the depth of the threads may not be enough for a Helicoil. Instead of replacing the pan, you could try to glue this into place with JB weld. If it works, you've saved the cost of a new pan, if it doesn't work you have to replace the pan anyway....
@markypolo556 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or go Metric instead ( in case of a SAE thread), or SAE in case of a Metric bolt.The difference in size is minuscule and only removes small amount of material. Of course, you are going to need the Tap and Die sets ( which may offset the cost of a new pan ( if you have to buy them).
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
For the cost of a replacement engine just buy a new oil pan, far cheaper than an engine replacement wondering if your attempted JB weld repair will or will not work LOL.

This kind of valve and cap system is called quick disconnect and comes from the aviation systems and it was used since long time ago for the hydraulic systems for example. The quick connect and disconnect valve and cap fixture is used for testing the hydraulic systems trough a ground pressure source. Net fixture now exported for the automotive industry

Im not convinced. If you install this valve you are reducing the hole through ehich all the burnt and crude oil flows out, maybe even some metal filings too. I still prefer the oil to wash out qyickly and powerfully, taking all the deposits and sludge with it

Scotty, I agree that this valve is pretty neat. However, I like to check the magnet for any EXPENSIVE bits of metal that might be found attached to my magnetized drain plug. Otherwise a very neat gadget!
@KG5RK6 жыл бұрын
+Eric sin: If you are doing your own oil changes, you could cut open your oil filter to see if there are MORE EXPENSIVE bits of metal. If you found them, you would probably seek a second opinion about the condition of your engine. If you have been driving the car for a long time, you would probably know WHY those EXPENSIVE bits were in your oil pan. I have a truck with 320K miles on it. Runs great. a year ago, found small bits of metal in it, and replaced my worn down timing chain & gear set. Hint: it was noisy too. Otherwise, some folks probably would just decide to cut their losses, and trade the vehicle.

What happens with the magnetic sump plugs that get all the loose metal shavings?
@lcee65925 жыл бұрын
Joe J you can get a good magnet 🧲 from a hobby store and stick it right under the drain hole. Then remove it when you drain the oil and put it back when done. If you have an aluminum oil pan put the magnet at the end of your oil filter.

With 340,000 on my 07 civic, going ~8-10,000 miles between changes of full synthetic, I've never thought of that...wondering if it really matters since there is a filter. Interesting idea to consider. Transmissions, absolutely.
@crpth15 жыл бұрын
@@racheat - It's always worth. In my "good" condition cars only a minute amount of ferrous metal powder get stuck in the magnet. More in the first application, much less on further oil changes. But either case better them be in the magnet than inside the engine. On the other hand some 30 years ago, VW Beetle air cooled, no oil filter, pretty beaten up engine. First time I used the magnet I was shocked with the amount of metal particles. Quantity and size of the particles was quite staggering. Highly reduced in subsequent oil changes. Have been using it for the past 30 years. Highly advised beside stays between very cheap and totally free. ;-)

What I found is that draining oil does not cause a mess, the real mess comes from removing the oil filter since it's facing downward on my car. Oil inside the filter will leak everywhere once the filter become loose, and it takes more than 20 turns to get it off.
@Jiiks6 жыл бұрын
Punch a hole in the filter
@victorescobar74376 жыл бұрын
It doesnt come out the filter when you drain the oil from the system? That sucks.
@evan8tor216 жыл бұрын
Heavenscape yikes. When you install the new filter , you only need to make one and three quarters of a turn. Shouldn’t take that much effort to remove, especially if you put some oil on the gasket before installing the new filter. Try that next time you install one and see if it helps when getting it off
@ajayrajaa41176 жыл бұрын
My car is also same; with oil filter facing down. Only good thing is that any debris in the filter will never drain back into engine in that case. Thus it makes an engine last longer. The oil filters that drain back into engine also let dirt back in. Think about it!

My vortex is great! Just pinch drain line to fill with oil, getting air out gives the oil head pressure. The pan only has a few inches of push. The 12 inch drain line will quickly drain warm or hot oil! The guys that cut the hose at 3 inches are cursing slow drain. Lol

@chrisbiz64086 жыл бұрын
Triangles1 probably worth reflecting on that for a second ... why would they stop selling a system like that ? Perhaps it’s not worth the small convenience for the potential damage to your car
@richboutin40446 жыл бұрын
I had one too. It was okay, but certainly not something to get excited about. Only Saved minimal time really, and the tube would shoot oil around easily if lightly bumped by your hand.
@woooweee6 жыл бұрын
Only theoretical damage is if you bottom out. The main problem with those was that the hollow screw likely stuck out into the drain pan some ways, so it would stop draining to the bottom of the pan, furthermore I found that it heavily slowed the flow, the valves diameter is much smaller than the original hole, never mind the huge and misleading hose, and the entire point is to clean out as much gunk as possible with fast flow of hot oil from a hot engine. I eventually lost mine when I got a new car, never bothered to get another one. Its one of those things which is better in theory than practice. If they had integrated this type of valve but larger into the design of an oil pan then yes, maybe it would make sense
@erictold6 жыл бұрын
I guess there might be warranty issues. Particles or sludge will not come out well because of the small passage, or the valve could fail because the particles. I don’t want to take risk for a tiny convenience.

Installed one on my V6 4Runner a few years ago and between the Sure Drain Valve and the OEM oil filter placement with drain tray, I can do a fluid/filter change pretty quickly and with no mess. The 6 grease fittings on the axle take some time, but that is typically every other oil change.

A leaking oil drain plug is the least of my worries with my 88 Ford Bronco 2, it leaks oil from everywhere LOL...on a side note the undercarriage is rustproofed LOL. Hey Scotty, have you had any experience with those coolant system flush kits? You cut a heater hose and splice in a T with a garden hose fitting. Simply hook up the garden hose and turn it on and flush the cooling system. Do those actually work, or is there a better way?
@yourhandlehere16 жыл бұрын
For me it's worked pretty good. I've had one on my 68 Corolla for years and years. If you flush it every two or three years it never gets very bad. This ones tiny so I usually do it every spring (and shut off the heater core for the summer). If it's really gunked up there are several steps to take (and I think different strengths). Good water pressure helps too.

Hmm, thanks, been thinking about adding one to my 2 vehicles.
