My dad died when I was very young. He didnt live long enough to teach me even the most basic of skills that the average man learns from his father. I spent my 20s, 30s, and now my 40s learning “manly” things on my own. I often found myself very intimidated by guys who knew how to work with tools and such. So much so that i suppose you could say that when I could have been a part of what they were doing I felt like my participation would have turned out to be a hinderance and that it would have left me vulnerable for dirty looks and ridicule. I remember being asked to fetch a ratchet sometime in my teen years and grabbing the wrong tool and the utter humiliation that followed. So I’d just stand by and observe and hope that I could get away with it, despite wanting to learn. I’ve never put any conscience thought into it, but its obvious to me that its my quest for knowledge that I didn’t get from my dad that has brought me here. Anyway, something to think about.
@gileslovejoy85814 жыл бұрын
My dad died when I was 2.5. Mom never re-married. She signed me up for Scouts as a boy. That was transforming in my life. She bought me my first gun, 20 gauge Ithaca single shot. Arranged with neighbor with 3 sons to take me hunting. Will never forget their good-natured laughter when I tried to shoot over-head ducks 4-5 times though my first shot (I didn’t think to reload) was all that went duckward. Just let cocking the hammer and clicking the trigger. When I was about 12 she bought me a bare-boned set of hand tools and told me if anything was broken I had first shot at fixing it. She said I couldn’t hurt it if it was already broken. God drew me to faith in Christ as a senior in HS. And I clearly see how God strategically placed good, and often godly men into my life to mentor me whether intentionally or not on their part. The Lord certainly directed my mom’s deliberate effort to expose me to such men, and that is a blessing I’ll never repay. Mr. W is that type of mentor for many, not perfect, but striving to be what God desires. I’m grateful he and other solid YTers and other platforms) can be that for new generations. And I pray that for myself and other men who’ve developed skills and acquired knowledge (more importantly gained wisdom) that we will never be too busy, or proud, or self-occupied to ignore another person of any age or background who wants to learn like you. And don’t be afraid to be laughed at, or make mistakes, or show up stupid in the moment. We all have been members of that club at some point. I still do dumb things (God often graciously allows it to be when I’m by myself “don’t know how that board could be too short...I measured three times). And kudos to you for pursuing learning! Keep it up. I’m 66 and every day I realize more what I haven’t learned yet. God bless you and those who want to learn, and those willing to stand with them and teach.

Hey man I can relate I'm 28 grew up without a dad but my grandfather started taking me to a trout pond outside the city. He was a salesman for a cleaning company and he would bring me with when he installed soap dispensers. My mothers highschool friend owned a contracting company and I worked with him for a few years. I would say that even though I didn't have a father to show me the ropes I was still able to acquire knowledge from other resources. Of course I think it would have been easier to learn and take advice/criticisms from a father. But who knows maybe there are some guys raised by fathers who know less then we do.

The “guy” had managed to jack it up and get the flat off before the jack kicked out and the rotor dug into the hot top. He was ripping into the poor girl because it was her fathers car and he should change the tire. I offered to walk him thru how to get the jack in place and finish the job but I wasn’t doing it for him. He wasn’t having it. The girl looked at him in discuss and said she’ll be happy to do it. I walked her thru jacking it up again letting down on the spare so she had enough clearance to get the jack back where it belonged and she pretty much took it the rest of the way. She was pretty proud of herself. This goes back to what I believe is the solution to most of our country's and our world's problems...parenting. Raise your children on a strong foundation of love and faith and from that stems genuine kindness, empathy, respect, hard-work, disciple, and every other characteristic you desire in a human being. When parents fail to lead and teach their children the way they are obligated to, they fail them. And, in some way, shape, or form, their children fail themselves and the world; albiet not always. Being an outstanding parents is a difficult and endless obligation and what should be the greatest joy and accomplishment of your life. If we want to change the world we have to start in the home and we have to start with the individual. We can tear down the house and re-build it to whatever grandiose specifications we could desire, but if we fill it with the same shitty people than nothing ever truly changes.

I agree, and he told us his wife basically orchestrated the entire sale of the old homestead and purchase of the new one. He’s making a lot of assumptions about that man and his generosity is not pure in this situation. To put it in Christian terms, he is lording it over them.
@amusingbear87624 жыл бұрын
Even though I agree with his general theory of self sufficiency and learning, it should stay theory in the way you treat a stranger. What if the man had a hidden disability or any other infinite possibilities. You assume the best and teach when it’s appropriate, with the method matching the correct interpretation of the person as the information presented to you allows for interpretation, not before.

I have ran into these same situations and reacted in the exact same way. You're right. There are so many modern men who just don't care to learn how to be self sufficient and it burns me up. It amazes me that so many men are "ok" with being dependent on so many other people to live life. The main reason why I started my KZbin channel, teach the basics and build upon them to become that more self sufficient human!

Your dialog is spot on! When it comes to young men learning necessary life skills, first and foremost they have got to have a mentor or role model who is willing to teach them and share all that knowledge. And then the young man has got to have the "WANT TO" or desire to learn those life skills... Many of us are so blessed that we had those older men like our dads and others who made sure we leaned so many skills.

Unfortunately many,many people have been brainwashed to resist the true order of life. I've even had quite a few people that completely think they hate me or despise me for these qualities but yet find themselves oddly attracted to them. Not in a perverse way but they usually end up finding themselves hanging out and overall having some of the most respectful moments or relationships 🤔. I tell them ,"See"! You naturally want a good Leader and respect these qualities even though you've been artificially taught to reject them. Best thing to do is teach and sometimes teaching is not being nice all the time! Thanks for all you do! I've seen young men and women act like that because either they never were made to help or when they did try to help they got chewed out for getting in the way or doing something wrong,etc. . Remember God doesn't always get through to all men and many are just left out of these blessings. Continue to be a Light shining the way forward!

I agree with you that this is far too common today, when I see a person in need I try and help, I have found that people have not in all cases but much more often, people seem to have a in titled sense about themselves. Recently I found a couple that the woman had fallen out of her wheelchair at a cross walk, I pulled over and helped her back in and the hole time her husband just stood there yelling like that was going to help. After she was back in and seemed fine, the husband had the nerve to ask me for money also because he wanted to go to the casino. I have become less willing to help people because this is more common lately, I feel bad that the few seem to make it worse for the many. God bless you and your family stay strong and healthy.
