The Real Reason NO ONE Wanted Patrick Mahomes in High School

Do you ever wonder how no school outside the state of Texas even offered Patrick Mahomes a scholarship coming out of high school? Or, how about the two biggest schools in Texas opting to skip out on the future Super Bowl champion? No one, not Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, whatever great college coach and great recruiting staff you can think of… just about all of them couldn’t see the potential in the quarterback who has now taken over the NFL. And schools that should, in theory, rule over the Texas recruiting scene like Texas and Texas A&M, well, they struck out even harder.
There is a reason for all this. And in this video, we’re gonna dive into Patrick Mahomes’ crazy lack of interest in his high school recruiting journey.

What turnaround? The Chiefs were 53-27 in the 5 seasons prior to drafting Mahomes, getting to the divisional round twice. Averaged 10 wins. Andy Reid is the one that turned the Chiefs from doormat to powerhouse. Mahomes just took them to the next level.

His lack of recruiting interest is pretty damn wild. It did not take him very long to start making unbelievable plays on the field as a true freshman at Texas Tech, despite the fact we were told by the recruiting services that he was a 3-star dude who would need a bunch of development as a bench-warmer. His talent was heavily underestimated.
@Eggemeyers
@Eggemeyers Жыл бұрын
Which does actually speak to the fact that while Tech capitalized on his talent, they weren't exactly geniuses by nabbing him. Ostensibly, Mahomes had to go somewhere, and his 3-star rating combined with the fact that he was from Texas lined him up nicely for getting an offer from Tech. Even Tech didn't know exactly what they were getting - Mahomes didn't start week one. But they tried all their QB's that year (2013) in the starting lineup - Mahomes, Mayfield, and Webb. Once they saw him out there, where I believe Tech was genius showed up in keeping Mahomes over Mayfield. Many people would've disagreed with that until 2018, but the decision certainly aged well. Wreck 'Em Chiefs!

The reason why is Mahomes' style and skill set. When you first look at him, you think he is going to get you into trouble, then you start to think he gets lucky a lot, then you realize it isn't luck. We went through this at Tech and laughed when NFL pendants down played Mahomes, knowing full well they would be won over in a year or two. Scouts don't take long looks, so a lot of coaches were stuck in the 1st phase. It is important to note that Kingsburry was not real high on Mahomes early on either. Mahomes started as a true FR because Davis Webb got injured and Baker Mayfield transferred. There is a clip/photo of KK & his staff's' reaction to Mahomes' 1st play, that was a disaster. By the end of the season, people were happy & by the end of the next season, people used Mahomes to talk about Kingsburry as the QB guru.

A couple of observations. He owes a lot of his overall success to the encouragement of his family. Seems they understood that it's important to see beyond the frustration of the day and sticking to it. Also, Patrick is fortunate that the Bears overlooked him. They had the same problem selecting talent in other positions, as well as management. He likely would have never seen the success in Chicago that he has in Kansas City.

I disagree. The reason that Mahomes was disregarded and disrespected is because he was unusual, and had different skill sets than the scouts were used to seeing. So, was that Mahomes fault? I posit that the scouts and coaches that ignored him thought they were making a wise decision. Fortunately, he was picked by Andy Reid, who saw the potential, and nurtured and developed that potential into greatness. There have been coaches that have gotten great talent and not done a thing with it, or even destroyed that talent. Finally, there is the man himself. Patrick Mahomes is, in the words of Andy Reid, "smart smart". He has an amazing memory, great football IQ, and is a "first in/last out" kind of player. He's everything that a coach dreams of having. I think, in my opinion, that Patrick went to the best opportunity for him, and his rise to superstardom was a perfect storm of talent, hard work, and great coaching.

Both Manning & Mahomes are exceptional quarterbacks, who possess the intangible quality of leadership and the capacity to win. Seemingly, each year Manning was in the NFL, his team's overall record was 12 - 4 or better. Consequently, Manning would put his Colts' team in the position to play in the AFC championship game, each year (seemingly). For five consecutive years, Patrick Mahomes has willed his Kansas City Chiefs team to the AFC championship game. Mahomes has now earned two Super Bowl victories. As noted above, both Manning and Mahomes are excellent quarterbacks. Mahomes' intangible qualities of grit, humility and perseverance have allowed Mahomes to perform at the highest levels and win.

Mahomes had a stellar college career. In fact, he sent Baker Mayfield packing to Oklahoma. Yet Baker was the first pick in the draft. The two draft pundits on ESPN said that “Arm strength is overrated.” when referring to Mahomes. A blind man could see that he was a generational talent. Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson all were drafted below where their talent dictated. They lead their teams to 5 Super Bowls and produced multiple MVPs. Hmm! Why were these players drafted below where their talent dictated!

Judging 18-year-old talent is tough. He was a guy people wanted but were not going after strongly because he was a 2nd-round pick in MLB and turning down six figures already at MLB. It was generally assumed he would become a baseball pitcher. A very raw player due to his focus on baseball in an age of quarterback specialization. Even Texas Tech did not know what they had. Michael Strahan went to Texas Southern, Mean Joe Green East Texas State, Too Tall Jones Tennessee State, Walter Payton Jackson State.

His footwork from under center was not good. He stood flat-footed in the pocket, like a statue. Even though he was quick to scramble out of trouble, coaches are looking for guys bouncing on their feet, or doing that running-in-place thing that Peyton Manning did. What people didn't understand was he didn't NEED to worry about his feet to make a snap throw on the money. He's a natural short-stop. With all the attention on the big play, I think losing Tyreek Hill really brought that out. One of the disappointments in the Tampa Bay game was how the Chiefs were not only not looking to exploit the middle of the field, they weren't even SENDING people into those soft zones underneath. Didn't have a short game, and couldn't protect Mahomes for more extended plays. Now, the deep ball is more of a change-up, and they set it up with running and quick passing. If you're not even attempting double moves, it takes the starch out of the pass rush.

These recruiters seem to have no great talent in recognizing true qb talent. They seem to only want to check off the boxes, and show no interest in anyone who doesn’t fit in their box. They take no interest in things like heart or competitiveness or the will to win, but only in things like how fast is he in the 40, or how tall is he, how strong of an arm does he have etc.. Guys like Brady, Rodgers, etc weren’t shown much early interest, while other top draft picks never amounted to anything special.
