A Root Cause of Stuttering Is Being Pinpointed in the Brain
www.seeker.com/a-root-cause-of...
“Now, thanks to advances in brain imaging, more and more research - including Maguire's own - is proving that a dominant factor behind stuttering may indeed lie within the brain. The latest research, published in the journal Human Brain Mapping, found that blood flow is reduced in the Broca's area - the region in the frontal lobe of the brain linked to speech production - in people who stutter.”
Reduced Perfusion in Broca’s Area in Developmental Stuttering
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/art...
“We detected lower regional Cerebral Blood Flow (rCBF) at rest in the stuttering group compared with healthy controls in Broca's area bilaterally and the superior frontal gyrus. rCBF values in Broca's area bilaterally correlated inversely with the severity of stuttering and extended posteriorly into other portions of the language loop.”
Stuttering linked to reduced blood flow in area of brain associated with language
www.sciencedaily.com/releases...
“A new study demonstrates that regional cerebral blood flow is reduced in the Broca's area -- the region in the frontal lobe of the brain linked to speech production -- in persons who stutter. More severe stuttering is associated with even greater reductions in blood flow to this region.”

One of the biggest struggles with having a stutter is not being able to say or not having the confidence to say what you're thinking. For me this often comes up in a class room setting, or any type of learning setting, and I have a question to ask or something to add, but I don't have the confidence to speak up due to my stutter. It's really a shame since I know everybody who stutters feels the same way, and everybody has been in those sorts of situations before.

Yes I understand it so much I'm 14 now I stutter since my childhood. I inherited it cause my uncle and my sis has it too. I'm in therapy now and I'm seeing a improvement. I sometimes have low confidence I'm afraid to speak if I don't understand something in class. Or when there's is an argument I just stay quiet even though I want to say something important it's not easy...

I used to have this problem until I realized you can't stutter while singing. So now, whenever I feel a stutter coming on, I pretend I'm singing my words in a flat tuneless song. Works like magic. And listeners hardly notice the difference.

my stutter gets so bad that I bite my tongue while struggling to say something. I am a straight a honors student and I have been called names before because of my speech problem. it pains me when people say "just take a deep breath" or "calm down" because if it were that easy, there would not be any stutterers. my dream is to be an actor and I intend on doing that so hopefully scientists can come up with a cure. sometimes I order something I dont want at a restaurant because I can't pronounce what I actually want. I get nervous when someone asks me any unexpected questions and I immediately choke on my words. I've accepted it but I still hope I can beat it someday.

i used to stutter like serious stutter till i was in college i developed a style that allows me to stutter less and now i barely stutter. just talk like you're pretending to read what ur gonna say, make sure to say every sound of the letters or words properly and clearly, like ur reading a book or singing, talk slow but with conviction. be confident. take a deep breathe everytime ur gonna say something... take ur time saying those words, especially long words that really makes us stutter... in case ur dealt with a long word and u think ur gonna stutter pretend that u forgot what ur gonna say or forgot the word so u will have some sort of alibi why u cant say the word... keep practicing this and maybe in a few months you will be able to manage ur stutter like i did

One stand-out memory for me was in the middle of a job interview for a combined bookkeeper/sales manager role, the interviewer (also the business owner) suddenly threw out "Do you realise you have a stutter?" Well effing-hell I am NOW! That completely ruined any chance I might've had of that interview ending well, as my relatively mild stutter got noticeably worse for the remainder...I feel that was a rather unprofessional question to ask someone during a job interview!

I've actually found that the people I've met who stutter often have above average intelligence. I always assumed it was a matter of them processing thoughts so quickly that they couldn't put them into words fast enough; like their vocal process was a sort of bottleneck for the information.

I am stuttering and doing my master in enginerring right now(mean grade of 1,1 :O ). I was asked twice from different professors to do my graduation at their chairs(becoming a doctor in engineering). I have become indirect an "geek" cause if i cant speak well, i tried to compensate that with just harder learning. Especially in oral exams. I am freaking afraid of being not able to say what i want. And the imagination that i cannt speak proberly AND dont know what the correct answer is forced me to learn everything nearly perfectly :O.

Thats inspirational man! I am about to go into my third year as a mechanical engineer major and I have a relatively bad stutter as well. I have to ask man, how did you manage to pull through engineering with a stutter? and what type of engineering are you studying (if you dont mind me asking)? It sucks cause I know im smart enough to finish engineering I just feel like stuttering would be the reason I don't finish if i don't. It would be cool to hear this from someone else perspective...

I've always talked super fast. So fast that I have to repeat the same sentence two or three times so the person I'm talking to understands me. I've noticed that sometimes I'd pause in a middle of sentence because I fail to pronounce a word,i'd open my mouth but nothing comes out. I also noticed that I tend to repeat syllables or words when speaking. I always thought that my brain was just so fast that my mouth can't keep up with it. But recently I read about stuttering and looked it up and now I understand that I actually have it. In addition to that, I sometimes miss words if I'm typing. I think about what I want to type or write to the smallest details. I think about every word but somehow, when I come back and read the sentence, I see that there are some words that are missing. Who knows, maybe the reason for stuttering is the one you mentioned.

The cause of this would be fear and anxiety. My stutter is moderate. I get stuck on naming key events in a book, trouble with names, months, basically the most important word to get your point across, I will get stuck. I stutter the most with the isolated sounds of A, B, C, D, E, G, J, K, P, R, T, and W. With my stutter, I have unfortunately picked up the coping skill of saving um a billion times instead of just stuttering though the word. My mom used to get mad when I said um too much. I was in speech therapy all the way until 9th grade. I had started to hide it so well at that point, the teachers didn’t see it anymore. So.. you have anxiety over the fear you have of stuttering around your mom. Your thoughts are most likely very similar to mine.

Well, being someone with a stutter .... wouldn't you find it easier to reffer to yourself as 'stutterer' than 'a regular guy with a stutter'. You might as well go for the option with less syllables to say. With all due respect, I personally don't see much difference between the wording of the two, they're just different arrangements of words used to convey the same meaning. You wouldn't call a horse rider, a regular guy who is riding on a horse, because efficiency certainly has an important role in language, and humans are very lazy beings.

Sorry in advance for the long ass post: In most stuttering cases what makes you stutter is anxiety, the thought itself that you're going to stutter IS what makes you stutter. When I was a kid/teen I had a HUGE problem with stuttering for quite a few years, it was a nightmare. Spent a lot of my school years with the stutter. I was always terrified when a teacher asked me to read out loud and generally had trouble talking to others, specially strangers. A person who never stuttered doesn't know the pain of wanting to talk and your body not letting you. BUT, just because you stutter it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you. There are some medically diagnosed cases of stuttering for different reasons of course, but most of the time it's anxiety related. If you can read out loud alone without stuttering, talk to yourself without stuttering, then THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. It's easily curable. I had to figure it out myself as a kid but I wish I had someone help me sooner, 'cause I stuttered for a LONG time and even constantly tried to avoid certain words and sounds or used easier replacement words and that's a terrible solution. The way you stop stuttering is by not thinking about stuttering at all. What makes you stutter is that anticipation of the stutter. You need to make an effort to not care about what others think about what you say and you need to be sure of what you're about to say and have a sense of confidence and/or indifference in what you're gonna say. If you think about stuttering you're screwed. Also, people who know you stutter really act in an incorrect manner (without even noticing) which makes you even more anxious. Pretty sure you're familiar with that look in their faces that is an obvious "come on buddy, we're waiting...". This is why it's important to not care about others and only about the content of the conversation. If you manage to flip that switch in your head alone then good, but if not: You can start by getting someone to practice with you. Tell them to ask you something and then you repeat your answer 3 times in your head and then answer when you feel comfortable. Also practice by talking to yourself in the mirror a lot and then start asking friends or family members to sit next to you while you talk. Then add a couple more people. Once again, what makes you stutter is the anticipation/fear that you're gonna stutter. So just focus on what your gonna say, think about your questions and answers in your head until you're satisfied with them before you actually get them out. And just forget about stuttering. Also, talking more often on a daily basis helps. Eventually you'll stop worrying about stuttering and be focused on your conversation and you'll realize you're no longer stuttering. Hope I didn't come across as too brutal and was able to be useful in some way. This might not help everyone, but it helped me so it's worth a try.

I stutter in almost everything I say and I really hate it. That said, it's become a huge part of who I am and for some reason, I *wouldn't* want to fully cure it. Even though it's the reason why I'm so shy, the reason why I choose water instead of coke because it's easier to say, the reason why I don't talk to my crush or the cute girl that likes me and so on, I wouldn't wanna go without it! Why is this? I've pondered about this myself a lot and here's what I've got so far: You know how people who are blind or deaf from birth can't comprehend the idea of sight/hearing? It's pretty much the same with a stutter; albeit not as extreme. The way we think when we talk is a lot more complicated than "Oh I want to say something, I'm gonna say it. Oh I stuttered, oh well". I've always felt something more than that there and I think it's because my brain is just hardwired to think the way it does now. I can't really put my finger on it and that's because I simply can't comprehend the concept of speaking freely! I always, always, *alwayyysss* say something different than what I wanted to *really* say. It's like playing one of those games where you have to describe something without using certain key words, except there's thousands of them and you have to consider what letters the words start with and the different parts each word is said in at any interval of time. Back onto why I *don't* want to "cure" my stutter; I really feel as if just having that vast freedom to say whaateeeveeerrr I wanted is just too much to handle! It seems... almost scary really! All you normal people probably think nothing of speech but for me it's a whole nother science. Like, if I can say whatever I wanted, how would I know what to say exactly?! Having the restriction of a stutter I think helps me stay together but really, it's only because I've never experienced fluency before. This does all seem really weird to a normal speaker and even a stutterer them self! It probably is just as simple as "Oh I stutter. Oh I cured it and now I don't" but it sure doesn't feel that way for me. Aaanyways thanks if you read all that. You really didn't have to and I really appreciate that. :) Have a good day

Ger hashim It's anxiety related especially when you are engaging with another person. It's the worst when giving speech to an audience because of nervousness turns the stuttering worst. It's all about comfort zone and where you feel comfortable. Two things definitely help, reading articles or anything out loud and two, stick your tongue out everyday like a massage minute or two . Just stick your tongue out and and back inside. I only stutter now in extreme nervous situations or other wise I dont. It's definitely related to anxiety. Do your search!

I started stuttering in my 40s....I stuttered for 25 yrs. In my 60s, I went on a gluten free diet for chronic pain. I stopped stuttering! I am seeing that others online are experiencing the same. I can't wait to see the research in the future that will explain the gluten/stuttering connection. For now, I am just happy to have fluent speech.

The thing I hate about stuttering is that all of my teachers and classmates think that I'm dumb and I just have to learn my test again but without stuttering even tho I know the answers to the test cuz they think I'm dumb, I wish people could just have a brain and know about people with stutters

As a person who stutters I thank you for spreading the knowledge about stuttering, great video with interesting ideas. Although I simply believe that stuttering is psychological and not physical at all, for number of reasons, for example, a person who stutters does not stutter when speaking to themselves, sing, or act out of character. but stutter when speaking to anyone else, especially to strangers and when they speak in public. If you saw a person that only limps when in front of people but walks just fine when they are alone, you wouldn't say that there is something wrong with their legs... It's the same thing with stuttering.

J94R I've always found it facinating that people who stutters are capable of singing and reciting lines in a play for example. I also think that points to it being psycological and not physical.

I know how hard and embarrassing it can be to stutter in front of people, especially when people start to treat you differently for it but it doesn't make you any less smart than they are. Surround yourself with people who get that and avoid the ones that don't. Believe me, you'll be so much happier when you do.
