That’s a valid point, but how much are 450r’s? Also, on some of these huge center consoles and power cats that cost over a million dollars, the upgrade from a yam/merc ob to a 7 ob is negligible when youre already spending that much.
@gabbermaikel
@gabbermaikel 3 жыл бұрын
why are some big center console botes more expensive then a big yacht? That dosnt make any sense either, and stil they get sold. The reason an outboard is so expensive has to do with weight and tight packaging. Meaning most parts are custom made for the outboard world. And if they could sell 1.000.000 of each model then the prices would drop rapidly. But the 200hp+ market isnt that huge, and the 400+ market is even smaller.

People who do not have tax write downs will still go to the used market. $9k - $16k will buy a nice boat up to about 26', with 150hp 4-stroke Yamaha or Mercury ob, maybe even twins, and an aluminum or galvanized dual axle trailer. There might be some work needed on the boat, but when isn't that true? If you buy a freshwater boat, it gets even better, because they have not had the wear from exposure to saltwater. That boat will go somewhere in the 35-45 mph range, probably the lower end. It's the new cc offshore boats that run a half million and up - if you have a 50 mile run to the fishing area, speed is money.

As of 3/28/21, I just saw a video where Mercury introduces their 600 HP V-12 4-cycle outboard engines. They are 7.2 liter, with 2-speed transmissions. They use counter-rotating dual propellers, and the nacelles don't move. The propeller shaft and lower foot swivels below the power heads. They have a 90 degree sweep from left to right, allowing better maneuverability in the marina, and dock. They've been talking about these outboard engines for a few years, but now, they are actually available. NOT CHEAP!!!!

Good article. Had a similar opinion that they cost too much with a ridiculously priced installation cost of $15000.00 for each engine. Not many sales for this engine at the price point demanded. The 450R was priced way below their price. Wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the new Mercury engines at 500 hp or more in the next year or two. Yamaha already has the 425. But Suzuki stopped at the 300. It’s all about market share and where the parent company wishes to put their sales, ie performance or pleasure boat market. All make great engines. Just comes down to personal preference. Some will disagree with my opinions. That ok with me. Great video. Thank you for sharing

I worked at Seven Marine and my assumption from when I left to now on why they can't be competitive in the market in truth was due to operations cost and ownership equity. When I was there we had several investors walking through weekly. That's how Volvo came to own them. The process to build one was not near as streamlined as it needed to be to stay competitive long term with the big dogs of the industry.

I believe you're correct that Volvo realized the niche market for these motors wasn't sustainable with Mercury coming out with the now 12 cylinder engines. Mercury has simply put the competition out business by having deeper pockets and out survived them all. Evinrude (OMC) made the mistake of investing in high efficiency 2 stroke engine technology while the market was demanding 4 stroke engines. That public demand was partly due to fuel efficiency and less pollution, and Volvo saw the writing on the wall early that the future demand will be all about energy efficiency and none polluting engines. Unless Mercury starts to invest in R&D in that technology, in 10 years they may end up filing for Chapter 11.

But im sure volvo being how they are could have made this competitive as mercury can do it for x price so could a small business with the backing of volvo, being small is what increases the price, volvo could have made this a production line thing and reduced the price

I'm a 47 year old life long boater. My parents have always owned stern drive boats but I have always had outboards. I have never owned anything but a Johnson/Evinrude and currently have a pair of 2007 E-Tec 250's on my boat and this is the 2nd pair of Gen 1 E-Tec 250's I have owned. In face I have been running only G1 E-Tecs since their release in 2005. Now that my background is out of the way. I do know outboards and the marine industry. Honestly when the 7 Marine first came out I didn't think it would take off like it did. I figured it would be a "made to order" engine by a small company building them on an "order-pay-we build for you" basis. So I am surprised they did as well as they did. I do not mind being wrong if it's for the right reason. The 7 Marine engines have really made their mark as the center console boats have gotten bigger and bigger. So....why the demise of the product. Certainly NOT for "green" reasons. People that can afford boats that can hold these engines do not care what it costs to fuel them. No...Mercury must have something big on the horizon. In addition to that Volvo probably doesn't make enough from the sale of the 7 Marine engine so it make financial sense to discontinue it. Same reason BRP stopped building outboards. They make more money in their other products and they never made it past 300 HP so they were phasing themselves out of the outboard market. I can honestly say if BRP came out with a 350 I would have bought a pair as my boat is big and heavy but it can only hold 2 engines so a pair of 350's would have been the way. Maybe some 350 Mercs in the future but I'll run my G1 E-Tecs until they run no more.

False information and obviously don't know of someone in the trade or have experience with the engines. THE REAL REASON is there were tremendous failures costing the company millions of dollars. Intercooler failures leaking water into supercharger and destroying superchargers and blowing up engines which is also a common issue on the LSA powered vehicles these engines came from like the Cadillac CTS-V and Camaro ZL1. They also couldn't keep the gearboxes from breaking and also the lower units kept breaking. Imagine all those failures with warranty footing the bill. It was killing the company.

I think Seven Marine Outboards was a great idea. The gain market share quickly. Volvo saw this as a way to grow into outboards. If they had not destroyed lower units and got the price point to 75k with rigging they would still be in the game. For these 2 reasons they failed. As we know Mercury is all over this and that is what they are making larger horsepower outboards slowly while keep buyers confident as the product is good. Great Video!!!

Mercury's big smart move was buying up and making deals with the boat builders. That put their motors on more new boats than most other brands, which both helped Mercury gain market share AND cut the sales of their competitors making it more difficult for them to complete. Their second smart move was pouring more money into development and innovation than their competitors instead of just continuing to make the same old thing.

I suspected 7 Marine was probably in financial long term trouble and Volvo was buying them to gain something they possessed in engineering, intellectual property or patents. Now the suspected outcome has happened. 7 Marine failed to survive as an outboard brand and product and is now going away. To bad. I want to see American built and branded marine products survive and thrive in the international and National markets.

7 marine should add more options to appeal to businesses such as charters. Such as dual propellers to start. Which would boost fuel efficiency and top speed. As well as eliminate the right or left hand handicap of certain handling limitations due to rotation of propeller. And add options of smart technology to give owners real time data of engines performance and speed consumption and operators handling and efficiency with integrated gps track log and everything needed to ensure proper maintenance prior to leaving port like preventative maintenance and fluid checks to have a monitor that informs when captains leave maintenance unchecked. And course plotting and track logs for navigation and fuel consumption related to navigation to minimize fuel costs. Having a detailed record of every aspect of operation would give owners of multiple vessels comparable data to give best operating techniques for optimal performance and efficiency. If integrated with sensors to monitor water conditions. Comparing each operators techniques to find best operating knowledge to best suit every scenario possible. Hey if I owned such a expensive machine , knowing everything of my employees operating procedures would help me to ensure the reliable turn key power plant provides my business with exceptional stability and dependable service customers can rely on for a safe memorable charter experience without limits to distance. And information on a touch of a button would give real interest of operating info to provide to insurance companies for reassurance of insurance coverage for engine protection as well as charters safety insurance based on captains operating history

A 450R is 65K at the top end and the Seven Marine are a GM motor bolted to lower unit. I'd think they could bring the price in under what a 450R is, include rigging and give Merc a real run instead of trying to be a "luxury" outboard. Not sure what GM engine they're based on but the crate 640 HP LT4 is only $16,000. I remember when I first heard of these thinking that they should be 1/2 or 2/3 the cost of a Merc. The most expensive GM crate engine was the LS9 which i think has been discontinued but was only 26K. Why were these things so expensive?

Price point killed them, $100K for an outboard....AND to keep the warranty you have to have Volvo certified service, all fluids EVERY 50 hours... Weight to horsepower was also not good, very heavy and not fuel efficient...

Agree with you on why 7 Marine failed. It was a motor that very few could afford and Merc./Yamaha are catching up fast. Yamaha #1 by a mile (for the average guy), Mercury #2 ( because of high end center console market) and Suzuki #3 (commercial and charter captains love them). Damn it Evinrude, why couldn't you get the bugs worked out. Just my opinion, but Mercury is no where close to leading the market. Mercury's "innovation" is that they have a narrow foot print with their super charged L6 engine configuration (gas hog and more to break). Which allows more engines stacked on the back of these ridiculous high end center consoles (really, you need 6 engines?). Yamaha and Suzuki are still using V6 and V8s, which takes up a lot of transom real-estate. That is why Yamaha built the 425 XTO, to go directly after Mercury in this segment.

I personally think Mercury is #1 reason why is the engines are easy to work on and mainly if there is something you don't understand they have excellent tech support even if you're not a marina or license mechanic they don't hold back information about their products in short their customers professional or regular boat owners are important to them and that's what separate Mercury from the rest of the competition.

Perhaps another company will purchase the rights to 7 marine from Volvo and build them as a limited production item. They always had a relatively small market share but the people that were buying them had the money so cost was not an issue for them.

Outboard motors work best on boats under 20 feet. And who needs anything more than 100 horsepower on a boat this size. I used to have a 90 hp Johnson on a 17.5-foot boat as a kid and pulled six of my friends on water skis at the same time. And I could go out all day on the Illinois Chain O'Lakes on two six-gallon tanks of gas. The bigger the boat, the less you tend to use it.
@michaelbusch3809

That is true for lakes. In the ocean around Jacksonville Florida a bigger, with in reason, will allow more days on the water. Those boats need more than 100 hp.

The Marine 7 outboards are about 1100 lbs . That puts them in a market of a super boat category. Mercury outboards about 658lbs that's a 2 to 1. What makes more sense and don't forget cost. The mercs cost roughly 40% of a marine 7 I think. People use their heads not wallets when rigging boats..

Most builders who for instance build a CC that would normally use 3-4 Merc/Yamaha outboards would use one less engine(2-3) if they wanted to install 7 Marine engines. That would save weight, save money and use less fuel which also saves money.
