In obi-wan Kenobi episode 3, Vader went full dark side on the town people while Obi-Wan watched. I believe there was more to this than just 'Vader being evil Sith Lord'. I read a lot of comments questioning why Vader did this, what his motive really was, and I think I have found it, at least in theory.
I think Vader was trying to show obi-wan that Anakin Skywalker was long gone, and that he is so far from the Jedi at this point, that he's doing all these things to innocent people. Sort of boasting to Kenobi.
What do you think?

@askmeaboutsugma
@askmeaboutsugma Жыл бұрын
@water For fucking real. Do people not know what foreshadowing is anymore? The whole scene in the first episode where the Grand Inquisitor explains that the weakness of the Jedi is their compassion before Reva Force-throws a knife at a civilian to draw the Jedi out was 100% obvious foreshadowing. It foreshadowed Leia’s kidnapping to draw Kenobi out, as well as Vader’s rampage to do the same thing. You can even tell in the way they cut between Vader and Kenobi that Vader senses him and is trying to heighten his fear, which would make it much easier for Vader to just sense where he is. Theory seems a bit rusty these days. He called the model of the T-16 Skyhopper a Lambda-Class Shuttle. They are very clearly distinguishable and they show several close-up shots of the Skyhopper toy in the show. Not to mention, why the fuck would Kenobi give Luke a toy of an Imperial ship? I don’t know how Theory could make that mistake.

The most incredible scene in this episode was when Ben had a vision of Anakin/Vader turning back and watching him menacingly. It’s horrifying because it’s shot from far away, so you can’t really tell where in the chronology this vision is placed: is it an angry Anakin, Jedi knight and a friend, or is it already Vader, the most dangerous being in the galaxy? Plus Ben can’t figure why he’s not burned. And finally at that stage Ben doesn’t know how Vader now looks, so it makes sense to appear to him like that. It’s really like a Horror scene

The thing is, you've just said yourself that when Vader stops and pauses, it is with reason. Would that not also apply to why he stopped and stared at Obi-Wan as he was being dragged away by the Droid? It's pretty clear he's not afraid of the fire, or blocked by the fire. He wanted Obi-Wan to get away in that scene. Either for further punishment or out of confliction.

It mirrors other scenes when Vader has encountered Jedi in Rebels (IMO). It's a trait that only Vader has that Anakin never really had: patience. I think he feels really confident and is tantalized at this slow cat and mouse game. If he's reliving the past and searching for validation from the master that seemingly never respected him, once Kenobi is caught- the game is over. It's like he's so hurt he can really only enjoy those few moments he has him in his grasp, holding him over the fire. That and it's episode 3 so why not have a fun standoff so we can have them fight again :)

If Vader is letting him go to torture obi wan then Vader seems kind of stupid in the end. If there isn't another encounter in this series, it will be another 9 years till their final confrontation. That's on top of the 10 or more years that him and his inquisitors have already been searching. Ironic coming from the guy that says "you should've killed me when you had the chance." Not to mention the entire scene was a chase scene to begin with. Getting away was Obi wans objective after luring Vader away from the village. One can make the argument he let Obi wan go because he is super confident in his power even after being dismembered, especially now after seeing how washed up and pathetic Obi wan is now, jedi wise. It just felt like Vader was so calculating and menacing in the village and then he became like a monologue type villain during the showdown. It would've made more sense if he had something that he knows obi wan needs to come back to retrieve, but he currently doesnt. Or dialogue from Vader to kenobi telling him he will massacre the village once Kenobi escapes, putting the deaths on Kenobi and the jedis weakness and cowardice.

My thought on the brutality of Vader in the streets was that it was just plain and simple tactic of getting Obi-Wan to come out and help stop the injustice basically just trying to get him to come out of hiding or every time he was doing that it felt like Obi-Wan was almost tapping into the force a little bit to almost jump in and prevent which helps Vader sense where he is while hunting him out I think it was just part of his snuffing out Obi-Wan/a little bit of like what you were saying flexing to show he is really powerful now and not holding back.

This was great to listen to. The over arching metaphors of that scene are self evident and your assessment is dead on. I haven’t read a ton of the expanded universe but any of the siths ascension into becoming more powerful always depicted higher thresholds of malevolence as the gas and engine (if you will) to becoming more realized masters-and it distorts them along the way. There has been some depictions I believe of shouldering this chaos and having to stabilize it internally. I really hope the Star Wars shows and films gets more into the inner meditational states as depictions of higher stabilizations of connectivity to the force. It’s been my feeling they have not explored this enough. The clone wars touch on it particularly with ruins and relics or quantum entanglement say with obi and a akin merging but more expose on inner trance states during practice would be really amazing to see. Hoping to see some of that with obi connecting to his master. So much potential there.

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to… suffering. I think Vader is still suffering, and I think Vader indirectly is trying to break Obiwan. He’s trying to make Obiwan suffer as much as he has. But I don’t think Vader realizes how broken Obiwan already is. Obiwan is in a dangerous place emotionally based on Jedi teachings. Prior to learning of Vaders survival Obiwan was filled with guilt at his failure, he still needs to let that go. Now his fear is that he can’t beat Vader, and should he? He still believes in Padme, and her belief that “There is still good in him Obiwan” It will be incredible to see the rise of General Kenobi, Jedi Master, Master of Form 4 fighting rise again to show that Anakin is still but a learner, and even while broken Obiwan is the Master.

It's sad that so many people don't know Vader and try to discredit the scene because of it. What Vader did there, was the most Vader thing ever. He doesn't need reason to kill people, he just needs to feel like it, which even Sidious mentions that its not always a good thing. He also wanted to terrorize his prey. Because at this point, this is what Kenobi is to him, a prey (well, a prey that he hates more than anyone in the galaxy) that's obviously below him due to the lack of training/fight over the years, so he can also allow himself to screw around and play mindgames with him, torment him in any way possible.

He is constantly belittled and humiliated by Palpatine and reviled by pretty much the entire Galaxy as a monstrous tyrant. Vader is sadistic, but there's a method to the madness. Not just in keeping his underlings in line, but to fuel his dark side juice since he always had trouble separating Anakin from Vader. Which makes sense; they're not as separate as people think. Vader just going in and murking people left and right is for two reasons: to draw out Obi-Wan and show his Inquisitors "this is what happens when you fail me." I have two favorite scenes from that episode: that scene of the close up shot of the mask...then BAM he turns so QUICK it's like something out of a horror movie. And "you cannot run." BAM Kenobi turns on the saber; it's a GREAT callback to when he tells Leia that the Force is like turning on the light when you're afraid of the dark. And Obi-Wan was petrified. Darth Vader a ghost story to the regular folk, a living legend to the imperials, and a nightmare for the rebels. And here's the rub....this side was always in Anakin; we saw him Force Choke people all the time in Clone Wars. We saw him murder in cold blood, he had no problem with killing people he thought deserved to die. And that transitioned over into Vader who even in the Orig Trig would murder his officers just for incompetence.

It's called "sadistic glee", gang🤔 It gave Anakin/Vader such sadistic glee to see his former master Obi Wan terrified so. Even Vader actually LETTING Obi Wan RUN AWAY was the same. Vader probably felt Obi Wan wasn't a "big enough challenge" after that pitiful duel, so he LET Obi Wan run away & FEEL what Vader felt on Mustafar; so they could later meet & Vader could "finish it". They should’ve demonstrated Vaders power better. The sand should’ve started shaking, people should’ve dropped to their knees as they felt his dark energy, he should’ve pried open the front of the first home and ripped the villager out before snapping his neck and rag dolling him to the ground. The slow walk through town is cool, but we should’ve felt his power more. I would’ve shot the ENTIRE fight (if you can call it a fight) scene differently. No cuts. Farther and closer shots of both men, more references to their last fight, w maybe Kenobi scrambling up a dirt pile to get the high ground but Vader is too strong now and just yanks him down w the force. I def wouldn’t have done the stupid fire scene the same way. “I can’t see him!””We can’t get through!”, like dude it’s waist high fire just fucking go around it, and only ONE? ally shooting down at them? Should’ve been multiple rebels. Vader could’ve sensed one person and yanked her down, remember this is a guy who can pull starships down from fucking space. Soooo many head scratching/wasted moments.

@@TWHowl We've already seen his power though. I think what's more impressive than that even is when he held back the water in Fallen Order. According to SCIENCE that water weight/pressure was 150,561.361 US tons. And my man was holding that much water basically the OCEAN back. Like...it's...this is a LIQUID he's holding back one wrong move and BAM he drowns. Not to mention, even before he drowns, at that depth, even Vader would be CRUSHED like a twig underfoot. I think it was a pretty straightforward move from Vader, he wanted to draw out Kenobi knowing he was in the vicinity and knowing there’d be a chance he’d come out and want to stop him (Kenobi knew this though). PS - but him doing all this plus lighting the oil to do what he did to him on Mustafar and his thoughts of doing the same to Kenobi in the comics, shows how sadistic he is now.

I actually believe it wasn’t so much a show of power to Kenobi, i believe he also did it in part to draw Kenobi out, kinda relating to the grand inquisitor’s earlier line “The Jedi code is like an itch; they cannot help it.” He wanted to draw Kenobi out, and maybe even use that jedi code against him, in the sense that if he didn’t decide to step out and help those people it shows how much he had truly fallen as a jedi (so sort of a humiliation tactic as well)

@@jibril2473 to quote old Obi-wan, it is true "from a certain point of view". When he says "left you" it could be specifically speak to the Master/Apprentice relationship ending. When I left you as my master. It's subtle, but still works. I think they'll have Obi-wan do something with the force that Anakin doesn't understand, he'll essentially trick Anakin with a "disappearing act" of some kind and make it look like he dies. This line can be interrupted in may different ways. But I always thought it didn’t align with the events of Episode III. Obi Wan left Vader in their last confrontation. Also Vader sees Anakin as a different person. He wouldn’t be referring to the last interaction Anakin and Obi Wan had. One way of interpreting could be Vader referring how he was still learning the ways of the dark side during and by Episode IV he has now fully mastered the ways of the darkside.

The way he phrased it he was saying that HE was the one who left Obi-Wan. When Hayden Christiansen says this Darth Vader is conflicted, maybe he beats Obi-Wan again but can’t bring himself to kill him and Obi-Wan escapes. When he tells Obi-Wan that he was the learner but now he’s the master, maybe that means he doesn’t feel that same conflict anymore and he’s completed all his dark side training. Keeping in mind that nothing has to be done for *only* one reason, I also thought that perhaps Vader was trying to bait Obi-Wan out by doing something he thought Obi-Wan would be compelled to stop him from doing. Vader using the suffering of others or the mere threat of harm to them in order to bait an opponent into coming to him is an established thing that he does; he did it in different ways in both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, although in the latter case it also enraged Luke to a point where his ferocity caught Vader off-guard. Given that Anakin knew Obi-Wan's tendencies during the Clone Wars, it would be a fair thing for him to expect that Obi-Wan would be forced to confront him directly in this situation. That Obi-Wan did not do so and instead continued to hide and run away likely struck Vader as just as surprising as it struck many viewers.
