Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing Voldemort and Grindelwald. More specifically- I’m going to be discussing Voldemort’s wild goose chase in tracking Grindelwald down, and WHY he did it. Grindelwald was famously defeated by Dumbledore in 1945, and that news was spread far and wide- so what could Grindelwald possibly offer Voldemort? Why would he still possess a certain wand?
Voldemort and Grindelwald, during their respective pursuits of power over the course of history, were each able to shake the wizarding world to its core. However, it should be noted that these men did actually have quite different objectives. Grindelwald wanted to obtain the Deathly Hallows, overthrow the statute of secrecy, and establish wizarding dominance over the muggle world- with no particular goal to ‘eradicate’ muggles or muggle-borns. Voldemort’s objective was much simpler - exterminate and enslave anyone that either opposed him or didn’t come from a pure magical blood line. In this way, though they are both undoubtedly evil, Voldemort was a lot more sinister.
And by the time 1945 rolled around, and Grindelwald’s own reign of terror was brought to an end- Voldemort was just getting started in his own dark pursuits. The defeat of Grindelwald only meant that were would be a brief pause in Tyranny, as in 1970 the first wizarding war officially began.

It makes sense for Voldemort to largely ignore wandcraft and wand lore. For someone such as him, they're only tools to add to his power; not intimate, unique personalities to work in tandem with. Similar to the concept of love, Voldemort simply could not completely grasp this relationship.

Beyond that, Voldemort seems to have some sort of dominance over wands. He can bring out most of his power regardless of the wand, shown by how easily he takes one of his followers wands and uses magic through it. Even the Elder Wand, which only serves 1 true master at a time, didn't weaken his strength when he used it. For someone who had all wands function similarly to each other for him, wand lore would be trivial. Why care if they all work the same.

Grindelwald put his life on the line to make sure Voldemort never found out that you need to defeat the wands previous owner in order to have its allegiance, he did have ownership of the wand and used it to its full potential, however the wand follows after the powerful so when he lost to Dumbledore, the wand left him too. Grindelwald used occulmency to keep voldemort from reading his mind knowing Grindelwald was lying yet he would never get the truth from him, that's why Grindelwald was goading voldemort to kill him so he would never find out.
@madguitarist63

He never found out something much more important, you don't have to defeat them, just disarm. Had he known that, he'd of known Draco disarmed Albus making him the next owner. Snape HAD to kill Albus so Voldemort would never put together Draco as the owner but instead target Snape. Snape made the most sacrifices of anyone in that story.
@SpireTheSlay
@SpireTheSlay 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly you don't even need to disarm or defeat anyone. Wand lore just taking the properties of the wand tells you all you need to know. It will not serve one that fears dying. Voldemort could have killed Draco and it would change nothing in terms of who was it's master. The properties it possesses makes it fickle and seek powerful wizards that don't fear dying. This makes it perfect for Harry, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald all extremely powerful wizards that were willing to die to accomplish what from their perspectives were great things... Yet useless in the hands of those that chased it. It did not constantly seek to undermine them because they possessed the traits it valued.

Grindlewald learned from others and used other people to sharpen his skills, but ultimately wasn't solely devoted to magic. Voldemort was not a peak duelist. He aimed to finish a fight as quickly and ruthlessly as possible. He wasnt interested in being a great duelist. As such, while Grindlewald was a superior duelist, Voldermort knew more about magic, dark and standard. Voldemort created unsupported flight, rudimentary body formulas to bring the dead back to life, the dark mark, several protection spells on his own horcruxses and was even commented by Dumbledore to be skilled enough that, if not for his own pride, he could have created his own Philosopher's stone in life. All in all, they had different focuses and likely, Grindlewald would win in a duel, but Voldemort would be able to kill Grindlewald without dueling, given enough time to develop a suitable spell.

They are not as oppressed as you think they are pretty capable of living their own happy life without being molested by muggles to help them all the time with magic. What he wants is 1. Set himself on the top of everything therefore he must 2. Oppress the muggles and set wizards on top 3. kill a lot of wizards until he is on top of them He also needs to kill Dumbledore his best friend and his only problem with it is how its achieveable not how bad it is At least Voldi was a psychopath without feelings for humans and certainly he never tried to kill someone he had feelings for Grindelwald has feelings and despite this he still does all the horrible things. That was his main flaw. If it wasn’t for that fear he would probably have made different and better thought choices that could have made him win the war. I’m curious how it’s master is decided bc it is supposedly based on a more powerful wizard killing another wizard for it but Grindewald simply stole it and spared Grigorevich’s life. That seems unlikely if Grindewald was SUCH a remorseless killer. They also seem to show him getting it at a VERY young age making me wonder just how soon after he left Godric’s Hollow he stole it. Heck the last 3-4 “Masters” of the Elder Wand NEVER KILLED THE PREVIOUS MASTER. Considering the fact that it’s called the Death Stick, you’d think Grigorevich, Grindewald, Dumbledore and Draco would ALL HAVE TO BE DEAD for Harry to be the TRUE Master of Death.

@@lynnerose7891 It transfers it's allegiance to whoever takes a wand from it's previous master by force. Most wizards think that they have to kill the previous owner because that happened to most of the Deathstick's previous masters, but Grindelwald and Dumbledore made a study of the Deathly Hallows and know that as long as force is used, then killing the previous master is unnecessary. Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand from Gregorovitch's workshop, waited for him to come and investigate the noise he had made, and then applied the required forceby means of a stunning spell.

But you could say that about everyone who "earned" the Elder wand from its previous owner. The wand is supposed to make you unbeatable in duel, but you could still be for example, assasinated when you sleep. Or you could be disarmed while carrying another wand (as Draco Malfoy was). And that is something Gregorovitch surely could have done, no matter how powerful the previous owner was.

Consider this. What if the elder wand lies outside wand lore? What if the elder wand shows loyalty to those who possess Peverell blood? The wand may have betrayed Grindelwald because Dumbledore may be more closely related to the Peverell family than Grindelwald. If the elder wand is a family heirloom and shows more loyalty to someone who possesses more family blood, then maybe it never bonded to Voldemort because he had so very little of his soul left. In addition Harry possessed two other deathly hallows which are also inheritances from the Peverell family. This would mark him and prove to the wand that he has a stronger blood bond to the magical item and therefore the wand would obey Harry over Voldemort

I like the imagination, but wouldn’t it contradict the anti-blood purity message in which the books are tacitly steeped? And I suppose it also suggests that distant relatives were killing each other for the wand throughout history. Not impossible. But I don’t know how likely it is.

I don’t know that it would make a difference in how you see my argument, but I should have been clearer that I meant blood purity when it came specifically to the Peverall bloodline - not wizardry as a whole. In your own example, you posit at the possibility of Dumbledore v Grindelwald being influenced by Dumbledore being a closer relative to the Peveralls. That is just a way of saying more purely Peverall. Take that to the extreme and you get the blood purity message that characterizes the villains in the book. It isn’t impossible. I have been thinking about this a lot lately as my family recently rewatched the HP movies again. When the first brother received the elder wand he treated as his due. He and bragged and publicly boasted of his trickery and another killed him for it. He had no respect for death. We already know that the second brother refused to accept the death of his beloved and used the stone to reanimate her. I believe the third brother understood they had overstepped their rights when they demanded a boon from death. I believe he and his heirs used the cloak to protect mankind from men, such as his brothers. He accepted and respected death and used his gift to help mankind from death until the time Death had appointed. Personally, I believe this is what makes you master of death. Something Grindlewald grasped after losing the elder wand. If the wand chooses the wizard it makes sense that although you can win it in a duel or steal it or kill for it and even use it, the wand will always search for another true master. I am looking forward to seeing Grindlewald lose his battle with Dumbledore because the wand has already chosen Dumbledore.

Instead, the movie leaves him ALIVE and even more despicable for giving up a secret. As far as WHY...i think Voldemort wanted more information about the wand...how it changes hands, etc. He meant to kill him, certainly. But, he lost his cool and did not collect the info he desperately wanted...and the CALL of his Deatheaters pre-empted all other considerations. It ended as a WIN for the good guys. 😊

Voldemort was probably more powerful when he had his original wand vs when he possessed the Elder Wand. Because the wand rejected him, it greatly stifled his power. Voldemort was far to obsessed with big stick go boom and wasted far too much time and energy trying to get it to work for him. In his final days, that wand was his biggest handicap. He killed Snape because he thought Snape was the wand’s master. He didn’t know Draco disarmed Dumbledore. Sure, Voldemort would’ve killed Draco and the rest of the Malfoy’s if he knew who the real master of the Elder Wand was at the time he found it. If Draco got possession of the Elder Wand instead of Voldemort after Dumbledore’s death, that would have been an extremely interesting. Voldemort’s original Yue wand of course could not kill Harry. If he was the true master of any other wand unrelated to Harry’s he would have been far deadlier. But nope I must figure out how to make full auto nuclear assault stick go pew pew. Just noting this, but when Voldemort had Lucius’ wand, the wand did not change its allegiance. Voldemort wouldn’t have been able to kill Harry regardless of what wand he used because he was dumb enough to create his new body using HARRY’S BLOOD. Big OOF for the Dark Lord.

He probably saw him coming and carefully chose his words to ensure Voldemort killed him instead of leaving him to rot away in that cell. To Voldemort death is the ultimate punishment but I don't think he's adverse to torture before that time passes, and to a broken old man what torture hasn't he endured that Voldemort could inflict other than to just let him wallow in his own mind.

I think Grindlewald was powerful and smart than Voldemort because Grindlewald knew that he could be the true master of the Elder wand just by stealing it from Gregorovitch, not by using bloodier methods. He was not selfish like Voldemort, who only seeked for immortality and power, but wanted all the wizarding community to rule over muggles. Not to mention the stupid things Voldemort did, like taking Harry's blood to create his own body, which led to Harry being alive in the forest and making the resserection stone into a horcrux without researching anything. Grindlewald was not merciless and treated his followers kindly ( I am mentioning followers not servants as I said he was not very egoistic). Voldemort could have treated his Death Eaters the same way, just because you can't love doesn't mean you can't care a little. Also the fact that Voldemort just obsessed over the Elder Wand and was too egoistic to even learn anything about it. In the end, Grindlewald was indestructible and more cunning than Voldemort.

I don't get it . I think that theory of Draco owning the wand is completely wrong. To become the master of the elder wand you must either kill or win the duel ( or maybe even the owner can give it over to someone if he really really means to , that's why if the owner dies with no one to take it it losses its powers). So Draco is stronger than dumbeldore?he won the duel ? Not in the wildest of dreams Even without a wand dumbeldore is way stronger ( non wand magic ) . So Snape is the real owner there's no doubt about that , so voldemort killed Snape for the right reason, and that's why he was able to kill Harry in the forest, but thats the only time it was loyal to him because after that Harry past the love defense to all the other wizards in the hogwarts castle just like his mother and that's why only at the end the curse rebounded at voldemort killing himself , in the books Harry says himself that the last plan did not work ( the elder wand staying with snape) but he says to voldemort that it has backfired at him meaning that killing Harry in the forest was voldemorts biggest mistake.

@@alexanderfeldinger1441 Actually, it does count in the books, because it's the same explanation that Harry gave to Voldemort. It isn't about winning it in a duel, it's about winning it's allegiance through victory and a victory of disarming Dumbledore is still a victory. Thus the ownership of the wand passes to Draco and then to Harry when he forcibly takes it from Draco. He won it from a mere scuffle on the ground, which puts to notion that it has to be either a kill or a wizard duel being the only way for its ownership to win its loyalty to rest. You don't have to do either exclusively. You simply have to show you are stronger in the eyes of the of Elder Wand. Grindelwald proved that when he stole and took down Gregorovitch, Draco proved it by disarming the greatest wizard in the world and Harry did by winning a regular human tussle. That was the ultimate irony.

That means you can leave your elder wand at home and some thug punches you and knocks you out, the thug is the master? No, it should've been that you truly have to kill the opponent to claim the wand. That's what Death would've done. That's why Gregorovitch and everyone thereafter was never its true owner. But this leaves the plot hole of Harry being the Elder wands master at the end. Because in order for him to claim ownership of the Elder wand, he had to get the ownership from Draco, who had to get in from Dumbledore. Also: Dumbledore didn't "lose with the Elder wand", he was mentally and physicall weak (almost dead) when he came back from the sea with Harry. No matter how powerful a wand is, you still need to have at least a very bit of physical strength to utilize it. Its the same way how the Wand is passed to new owners in the history too, most of the time the previous owners are killed in their sleep or on other situations where they were not combat ready. Thats why the Elder wand changed ownership so many times, without actually "losing" in a duel. So its totally plausible that Gregorovitch got the wand, since he dosen't really need to overpower any previous owner. All he needed to do was to disarm the previous owner when he is not carrying the wand or or murder him in his sleep.

As Dumbledore didn't kill grindelwald, voldemort went there to kill him and thought he was now it's true master and then only stole it bfrom Dumbledore's grave. This is the exact reason why he kills snape (wand not working properly for some reason which he thinks maybe Dumbledore had it for so long, Dumbledore became its owner over time and as snape killed Dumbledore he needs to kill snape.) He never truly understood th wand's power and it's passing.

I think there was several things going on behind the curtain so to speak, i think Tom killed Grindelwald was the fact that Grindelwald was either just as powerful or potentially more powerful than Dumbledore, Dumbledore after all stated that he likes to think that he was maybe a little bit more skillful than Grindelwald, but he could not be certain of it, and Grindelwald had no problems using dark magic, hence he could become a new dumbledore threat only with access to the dark arts, so Voldemort just like everything else he did, out of fear. Killed him before given him a chance to rise up against him, i also think that Dumbledore still visited Grindelwald and discussed matters with his old friend and lover. Grindelwald had no reason to wanting to aid Tom, but he had reason to prevent Tom from controlling the world, after all, despite his failure, Grindelwald, wanted to create a new world order, but his vision was different from Toms, and Toms vision was not something Grindelwald approved nor wanted to take place, plus he might still have had feelings for Dumbledore and wanted to aid him in his fight. Another reason i think Tom killed him was when he saw how despite being so frail and weak, Grindelwald locked eyes with Voldemort, smiling, laughing and even mocking him, even having the nerve to tell him that Voldemort despite all of his power, all of his deeds, still knew nothing of the world, nor of what was to come. Im thinking that As Tom experienced all of this, he began to truly fear what would happen if Grindelwald was freed and was allowed to regain his strength and allowed a wand into his hand then Voldemort would have a far greater rival than anyone he had ever imagined, plus Grindelwald just might announce to the world that the elder wand was real and that Tom held it, but was not its true master, thus could be defeated, which would tempt Voldemorts own followers to maybe try and kill him. I also think that Grindelwald had either had a vision or he simply through Dumbledores information knew what would happen in the end and so was happy to be the fatal part of the trap for Voldemorts defeat to set him upon that path, Grindelwald knew so many things, and Voldemort knew that he stood before a wizard that despite his poor condition held knowledge that he would never discover, and again killed him before it could be used against him.

Grindelwald wasn't evil. He was idealistic and ambitious. There was no evil to be had, just ambition. Voldemort was equally ambitious but evil, he took pleasure in killing. Both ambitious men with opposing ideology on how to bring the wizarding world out of hidding.

How did Grindelwald know the wand will never be Voldermort's. Also, why did it take Voldermort so long to track him after recognizing the thief, it was common knowledge that he's rotting in Neumengard. ARGH.

Can someone explain how magic and Wands work? Iv seen people use magic without wands so why use them? Also does using magic cost some kind of energy to cast? Or can you just keep spamming it endlessly with no draw back.

i have another theory: Tom Riddle was never very smart, or powerful. He operated purely on his own belief that he was, and by terrorizing others into believing the same. It was a delusion, a flight of fancy, just like they Deathly Hallows. THE Elder Wand, wasn't. It was AN Elder Wand. THE invisibility cloak, wasn't. It was just AN invisibility cloak. useful magical items, yes. but the power was an illusion, they weren't all-powerful unique items. Anyone can have elder wand, the difference was whether they BELIEVED it was THE elder wand, which never actually existed. just part of a flight of fancy, a story, created to feed the ego of those that sought power. This was Tom Riddles greatest failing, the failing Dumbledore tried to warn him about, having learned it at great cost to himself... Power is an illusion. It's a delusion. A self defeating obsession that is almost impossible to overcome. The Deathly Hallows is a story, they never actually existed. The story of the Deathly Hallows wasn't a story about the origin of all-powerful items, it was a story about 2 brothers that sought power, and 1 brother that saw the folly of it.

Inaccuracy: "Voldemort didn't just want any old want", actually he did, he first borrows Lucius' wand and finds out that it is still beaten by Harry's. Only then does he seek out the elder wand.

Voldemort doesn't actually care about pure-bloods. It's a veil to gain power and powerful followers like Malfoy and Lestrange. He's only after immortality and power. He's actually a pretty lame villain even if he's crazy powerful and evil. I like Grindelwald as a villain much better and take him far more seriously.

What I like about the harry potter series is how voldy f***s himself up so badly because of his ego. When he returned he could have just easily started where he stopped and could become the a most powerful wizard following the dumbledore’s death and rule the world with iron fist as he wanted. But no… he was way too obsessed killing a school boy just because he couldn’t kill him the first time. So he makes his body from the boy’s blood making the boy indestructible by his wand. Goes on a rampage to secure an old ass wand while his precious horcroxies are getting posrched, and finally making his own followers fed up with him by unnecessary killings, tortures and insults. Finally he is going to demolish the one school all the wizards love dearly just to find a school boy. Not a very smart move for a such a powerful wizard if you ask me. I’m pretty sure most of his followers were fedup at the end when they saw what he did to to the school that genarations of them attended He could have easily order them be of his followers to kill harry if he ever comes closer to him. Instead he lets himself be Harry’s bitch with his own stupid actions. Props to JKR for a wonderfully written masterpiece.

Stupid question alert!!! If the Elder Wand didn’t make you invincible in a duel, as shown by Grindelwald’s defeat at the hands of Dumbledore, why was Voldemort so keen on attaining it?

Grindelwald knew love. That's the big difference Voldemort never did. He comes from "families" without love from both sides. His parent's union was forced, not love. His mother loved his father but this love only manifested when she stopped giving him the love potion or whatever she used on him. Voldemort was the result of lack of love and coercion. His mother had such a miserable existence that she wasn't able to fight to stay alive for her son. Big contrast with Harry with whom Voldemort himself identifies. Harry's parents both come from loving families ( lily's muggle family were even proud of having a witch in the family, they celebrated her being different. That's health and love. The Potter's were basically the Weasley's for Sirius) and Harry is the product not only of his parent's love but of all the love that made them. I don't know much about Grindelwald's origins but it's clear to me he loved Dumbledore as much as he was able to love. I think the books show very well the difference between the presence and absence of love on people and how it truly is the most powerful magic, how it can make or change the course of life including generations

I don't like in the HP DH2 movie they have Grindelwald tell Voldemort where the Elder Wand is. I like the book version cause he does not betray Dumbledore even after all them years in the movie it's almost like Grindelwald is getting Dumbledore back.

The movie doesn’t make sense. Voldemort is under the assumption that the Master of the elder wand must be killed in order to transfer allegiance to the killer. However, Voldemort doesn’t kill Grindelwald in the movie. The flaw in this is that how can Dumbledore control the elder wand if Grindelwald (former Master) is alive? If Dumbledore isn’t the master, how can Voldemort be the Master? It’s much cleaner in the book - it’s obvious that one only be disarmed if you see that Grindelwald is alive and Dumbledore controls the elder wand. Voldemort is an idiot.

Voldemort had no real idealogy. He's a child lashing out the world. He could have learned from the failures of dark wizards and adapted his strategy to take down the Muggle World first via mind control and magic. Then turn Muggle kind against Mages. It's easier to use hatred to convince people than utilizing fear to command subservience.

It is interesting that understanding of Wands is limited to those who sell them. How does magic advance if no one is actually studying it? The simple rules of dueling and ownership should be a First Year lesson. Hell, the wands should come with an owners manual of how it works. Makes you question what any of those schools actually teach.

I don't think the wand had anything to do with the visit. I think he questioned Grindelwald about it because he liked knowing as much as he could, remember at hogwarts as tom riddle he was always reading and experimenting because he had to know everything about everything. But at the time he visited Grindelwald he needed followers, loyal and powerful that believed in his dreams, he didn't know if he could totally trust Snape, Lucius was letting him down and Bellatrix was a loose cannon. Grindelwald had a similar vision and his name was still linked to power and fear that only dumbledore was able to break. I think he wanted to test Grindelwald to gain a follower and hadn't considered Grindelwald could have changed that much he was remorseful to the point of potentially being the next dumbledore who would stand in Voldemorts way

Grindelwald. Vodlemort is a child in comparison. His ambitions are small-minded and simple. He's also very naive in all his knowledge. His perception of the world is a very simple perception of might, of raw power, gives right. He rages, when it doesn't go his way. He's a very stereotypical evil, but even if he had won, he wouldn't have lasted long at the top. He knew to destroy, to fight, to take over, but he has no idea how to rule. His rule would have been chaotic and in time, sooner or later, he would have fallen either to his lieutenants or to an uprising.

Wow so much work when its much simpler, voldemorte beleived that to defeat an enemy means one must kill them, because its the only way to guarantee they cannot come back at you. Thus in his mind the most powerful wand in existence, the wand once known as the death stick, would only show allegiance to the killer of its last master
