In my grandmother's backyard she grew cling peaches & also white peaches. The latter were rather watery. She also had an orange tree grown from a pip, a couple of almond trees & a couple of vines. I also recall a row of quince trees (made the best quince preserve), dividing her house from a neighbour.

Talking about power going out - We are from Illinois with ice and snow storms. Power going out, sometimes for days. Now that we are older, that is toooooo much, so we invested in a whole house generator that is powered with natural gas that comes on the minute the electricity stops running - one of the best investments we have ever made. That was 8 years ago - the anxiety is gone that we will be without power in the dead of winter - what a blessing!!

You are correct that underground lines are great especially in heavily treed areas. I currently live in a heavily treed community and have underground lines. In the last 11 years I have lived here I have only had 2 outages that lasted more than half hour and those were due to trees down on the main lines. I also just retired from working with the power company. The company has a good restoration time for most people. Unfortunately there are a lot of rural areas with lots of trees. Many of these people are angry about the number of outages but they still want to be way off the main road surrounded by trees but they have above ground lines because they didn’t want the extra cost of underground lines when building. It is amazing how many feel the power company should be picking up the costs of that installation. They also get angry about losing power due to trees yet they don’t want to get rid of trees. Your property is great for above ground lines and while they aren’t attractive if there ever is a problem with the lines it’s easier to find the problem and fix it quickly than underground lines.

How exciting to be planting all those fruit trees and planning your orchard. One thing I wanted to share with you is about the Mulberry trees; we had one and it was hanging over our deck. Our dog used to go out every morning and eat the fallen fruit. One day she started having seizures. Vet said that mulberry trees can give dogs seizures if they eat the fruit. So just watch your animals when you start getting fruit.

I grew up on a farm, my dad had crops he grew, cattle and horses he raised, and trees he planted. He had three apple trees, five pear trees, walnut trees and a few crabapple trees. He loved his pear trees and I know some were Bartlett. The last year they lived there a tornado come through just North of their house and took down several of his pear trees. Dad passed away in 1998 and my mom in 2001. They last lived on the farm in 1997 then bought a house in a town 6 miles away. They sold the farm and it looks so different, no trees, no barn, and a totally different house. I miss the farm and watching your channel brings back so many wonderful memories!!!

When you run out of chores with your building, consider building a simple greenhouse and you should be able to grow citrus
@inglis70863 жыл бұрын
New Zealand grows citrus outside - specifically Lemons (Meyer is popular) the Meyer Lemon tree in my garden is 50 years old and around 7 foot high and 6 foot wide the coldest we get overnight is 23F at it's coldest but normally around 33 F and a normal summer temperature at it's highest of 84 F in February - Lemons can grow outside in Alabama - Citrus tree's are loners they don't like to have anything planted close to them and they need to be feed every 3 months with citrus feed so they are "hungry" - mine gives me 2 lot's of lemons a year and all year round - we are going into summer here and it is currently in flower with the winter fruit still on the tree

My grandpa planted blackberries, raspberries and boysenberrys along the back fence to build a natural barrier. And I remember getting a little scratched up Goin deep for the big ripe juicy ones. I didn't care. My GPA used to say wear an old long sleeve shirt and gloves. But it didn't stop me from just reaching in there and picking them. It was worth a few minor scratches if I was careful. Spoiled my dinner though! I was eating fresh fallen apples and peaches I could reach as well!

You have 2 have 2 Bartletts to produce and they aren't nearly as crunchy or juicy. Also, nectarine trees are much more productive and insect free than peaches. I was zone 8 in GA and these were amazing!

Especially the Blue Runner. That snake will chase you. Now of course that's here in Louisiana but I'm sure they love the blackberry bushes up there also. So just be aware of your surroundings. And I hope you get a bumper crop of everything

I don’t have an orchard, per say, but I’ve got fruit trees around the farm. I grow crab apple, ure pear, honey crisp apple, two types of plum, sour cherries, and one peach tree which is my third attempt at growing a peach; it’s an experiment as I’m too far north to grow peaches but I’ve got one microclimate close to the house that I’m hoping will work.
