The "releasing a remaster/port/remake for the switch in order to get people hyped for the next anouncement of the franchise" is not weird, given that nintendo has been doing this for a while: Metroid Prime Remaster (2023) - Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (2025) The Leyend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake (2019) - Echoes of Wisdom (2024) Bayonetta 1+2 in Switch (2018) - Bayonetta 3 Pikmin 3 Deluxe 2020 - Pikmin 4 Famicom Detective Club: Two Case Collection (2021) - Emio The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (2024) Xenoblade Chronicles Remake (2020) - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022) Or maybe this is Nintendo's way of saying "hey, don't worry, we still remember this franchise, anyways, pay us $60 for this lazy port".

I definitely agree with you and I think the main reason they are releasing this game is because of things like the Mario movie and Super Nintendo World that have a DK appearance, and then those people who see that, some of whom are casual gamers, would then want to invest in the DK franchise video games on switch. I'm also thinking Nintendo might be cooking up something big for DK on the Switch 2, so only time will tell.

Not only does a new game seem likely after a re-release of an older title, but they’ve nearly finished the rounds of all of their classic characters-Kirby, Samus, Yoshi, etc.-receiving spotlight. Only Star Fox and DK remain from what I can remember! This was a great video. Solid jokes and nicely presented.
@aidan_5484 күн бұрын
It does seem like that, and if the switch 2 ends up truly just being a switch successor I feel it would be appropriate to focus on giving DK and Star Fox the spotlight first. Also love the positive feedback!

I think it's just to coincide with the expansion and the Mario movie. Notice how the expansion is based solely on Returns with the final boss even being on the ride. The Golden temple was also a set piece in the Mario movie which the park is pretty much trying to parallel.
@aidan_548Ай бұрын
That is a fair argument, but the main reason I mentioned the Donkey Kong expansion is to show that despite a lack of new games from the series, Nintendo still sees Donkey Kong as a very viable and successful enough brand. I mean if Nintendo saw Donkey Kong and it's current state as something like Star Fox or F zero then I think it would've been unlikely that it was chosen as the first expansion. I mean tears of the kingdom sold 10 million copies in 3 days last year and Pokemon is well pokemon. I don't necessarily think a new game and hints towards it are hidden at the park, more or less just an observation of how Nintendo currently sees and treats the Donkey Kong franchise overall

My confusion with this reasoning is why people think this series would be more potent as opposed to those local pandemic years A new Donkey Kong game in 2018 makes more sense if for no other reason people still had an appetite for the switch as a concept. Riding high off of Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing was on the horizon, Pokemon SV albeit with mixed results. A lot of first party, or at least recognizable icons were on the lineup Not only that, these games were different in a way. We recieved a new Kirby title that geared your perspective beyond the 2D domain that the series was becoming known for. What this means is that you were getting a lot of bold takes that didn't rely on the usual console based gimmick, demonstrating the creative throughput from the developers even as early as 2018 A new Donkey Kong game during that period made the same amount of sense that A link between worlds did on lesser hardware. They kept their vision in line with what the series had been known for while adding a layer of depth which made the game noteworthy. With DK this would mean you're still the getting bombastic minecart experience that we've come to expect, while laying in place a new element which helps us see the series in a different light In my opinion this was Metroid Dread. They overhauled the to visuals to theatric levels of quality, but incorporated the parry mechanic to accompany said visuals in order to give the impression that you're really in Samus' bullet time world At that time, Metroid's primary selling point was overcoming the drought. We don't necessarily have that with Donkey Kong in Pandemic based timeline. Im sure that's topical now, but my point is that _by now_ they would have to completely reintroduce Donkey Kong into the beyond category, alongside our anticipation of the next Switch. Why have a new title that does pretty much what the available titles have done: serve as a renaissance for classic staples of times past. That's going the Shadow Generations route By that metric they ought to simply remake the first Country title, patting themselves on the back for churning out 3D renders of what's available. And you have to remember that the original was slated to be a much different angle where Donkey Kong fit general template of that breakout title We were able to experience a rich, feature length game with all that atmosphere because of this. In other words it was Rare that pulled a rabbit out of the hat, not nintendo, its like a local amusement park being brought under the umbrella of six flags. The jobbers did all the work for the parent company to make it relevant with brand recognition and plenty of merchandise on deck What does Nintendo have in its bag of tricks these days to introduce us to a consistent theme in the gameplay department? This is comparatively an absolute retreading of the way they are handling Metroid Prime. If it comes out at all, it will do so after a ton of revisions and regime changes before they deem it adequate to sport Nintendo quality standards. If not, DK will go the way of Starfox. They seemingly don't understand what makes the IP noteworthy and reintroduce it to us like they had a shipworthy product waiting in the wings this whole time

As an F-Zero fan who likes Pokémon I totally agree with you. :3 The F-Zero community seems so small. Nintendo can just leave em in the dust and that’s sad.
@banjobro6419 күн бұрын
@@StatickyCat I guess Nintendo understood that internal competition between its own products is not good. Melting the handheld and the home console was a successfull move. Also, abolishing F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing allowed Mario Kart to shine as a primary product, rather than a Mario Golf-like spin-off. They probably care about F-Zero because it is present in Smash Bros and MK8 and they realeased F-Zero 99. They are probably trying to figure out a way to make F-Zero and Mario Kart completely different in order not to split the public but F-Zero has always been based on technological power, which made sense for N64 and GC that were aligned with the most powerful systems in the market but not for Wii and Switch.
@StatickyCat19 күн бұрын
@@banjobro64 F-Zero is very different from Mario Kart though, being a more skill-focused game, so I'd say F-Zero deserves its own lane seperate from Mario Kart. But they've been fusing F-Zero with Mario Kart, which me and a few of my friends don't agree with. Now, as for Diddy Kong racing, I'd call that more of a spin-off in the Donkey Kong franchise than a series of its own depending on how you see it.
@banjobro6419 күн бұрын
@@StatickyCat Sure it is different as a game but the challenge here is to find a different market/target than MK. Casuals, children and Nintendo fans will like MK more and hardcore gamers can enjoy MK a lot as well (the gameplay is really profound and the shortcut system draw a line between true hardcores and casuals, and if you do not like items just turn them off). Nintendo experimented a bit with Diddy Kong Racing and F-Zero to test the market and the winner happened to be MK. F-Zero could appeal a niche of futuristic racing fans but I think that more power is needed to have acceptable results. Also, it would need a massive investment in graphics and online support. In other words, it should compete with other HD Sony/Xbox productions. Adults looking for realistic races would go for GT or other simulative games. I suspect there is not a wide enough market for fans of arcade hardcore futuristic races....at least among Nintendo users...
@StatickyCat19 күн бұрын
@ I do know where you’re getting at. Besides, F-Zero is way too good for way too few, a hassle for Nintendo. And I’d even call Diddy Kong racing superior in some ways to even Mario Kart 8, but I think the game being more complex in some ways than Mario Kart didn’t sell it. Which is too bad in my opinion, because that shows that for Nintendo’s own betterment, the technically inclined are left out.

I can imagine the team pushing for Donkey Kong Returns for Switch we're thinking how basically zero cost it would relatively cost to release , and when making a case to Nintendo leadership , they knew the HD rerelease project would easily get greenlit versus pitching a whole new Donkey Kong game. Also keep in mind, it's VERY likely this HD rerelease is a precursor for a new Donkey Kong. It's easy money that they can turn around and invest in a new game. So I see this as a good signal. And imagine this new DK game getting similar treatment Mario wonder got, with new animations and everything. I think the next step should be to put DK64 on the switch. That game is long overdue for rerelease, considering it wasn't as well received on N64 due to gamers being seriously burnt out on collectathon 3d platformers in that era. DK64 had insane levels of items to collect and players just had enough. I think today, gamers are ready for a 3D plat from Nintendo and DK64 would be a massive success since it has so much to do in the game

I think it's obvious what's going on here, Retro Studios, who made Returns and Tropical Freeze, after the Tropical Freeze port, were making the remasters of the Metroid Prime trilogy for Switch. While Nintendo commissioned Prime 4 from another developer, when this developer failed to make Prime 4 a quality game, in 2019 development was restarted with Retro Studios returning although it only managed to make the remaster of the first Prime game, that's why there is the rumor that Prime 2 and Prime 3 will be simple ports and not remasters, because Retro is very busy with Prime 4 with all the staff they have hired. But since Nintendo needed a "NEW" Donkey Kong game to replace Tropical Freeze to promote the park and the movie, since their options were either a Country Returns port or a DK64 Remake, they chose the first option and AFTER Retro finishes with Prime 4, they will return to the Donkey Kong franchise. Now we have every DKCountry game on Switch and well, appreciate the new games we will get guys, the more advanced the Nintendo console is, the longer the development times will be for new games, it was this port of nothing until Retro can do another DK game.

6:10 one possible answer is that they rightly see DK as part of the Mario Universe, which other Nintendo IPs really aren't. DK and Mario have always existed side by side in the same universe. While other IPs like Link and Kirby have occasionally had cameo appearances here and there, it's never been clear that any other Nintendo IPs are actually canonically part of the Mario Universe. DK is pretty much a guaranteed part of any Mario party game, sports game, etc. It's franchise also predates Mario solo games and so is recognizable to a wider swatch of people than sone of the newer mario spin off franchises like Wario or Captain Toad. I think Zelda would make a lot of sense as an expansion to the theme park, but really it's hard to think of anything more natural than them building first the core IP of the Marioverse with DK.
@aidan_548Ай бұрын
I agree that it's very much connected to Mario, however when we do look at the whole expansion it is very Donkey Kong country as compared to Donkey Kong in the Mario spin offs. Like when it comes to the park and the movie they're very quick to point out that these are two separate "worlds"

Now am I saying is that enough to justify paying $60 for what's soon to be a 15-year-old game? No. But at the very least I know I'm paying for something that's a complete product and likely not a buggy mess that many games nowadays seem to be upon release. This whole, "paying full price for what is essentially a lazy port" has to blow over at some point.

To be fair, this might become the definitive way to play Donkey Kong Country Returns, since the Wii original uses forced motion controls and the 3DS version is a graphical downgrade. This kinda reminds me about the Mario RPG remake, it was not added to NSO because of the remake, maybe something similar is happening? There's definitely potential there. If I remember correctly when it comes to the actual copyright of the characters Nintendo owns anything related to Donkey Kong (ie Dixie, Kiddy, Chunky, Cranky, Lanky, tiny, etc). I would be open for a remake of DK 64 especially because of how much hate it has gotten in the last few years. Not only would it look gorgeous, but they could also fix some of the major flaws people have with it as well. Could definitely give it a second chance at being one of the greatest games of all time

I agree that DKC Returns is just meant to market the theme park and keep us occupied. Retro Studios is to blame for the decade of no original games.
@amonner201029 күн бұрын
A big problem with DK is that Nintendo has no idea what to do with it as it is a heavily western based IP. Rare were western developers, so when they got sold, you can tell Nintendo was at a loss as to where to take DK. They kept using him, but the cast was heavily trimmed and the games were mostly spin-offs. Retro saved/remade the IP, and did really well with it. However, Retro fell into some financial trouble in the late 2010s and clearly had their next project(s) shelved, whatever they were. Now they are strapped to Metroid again, of which, ironically had much the same issues as DK of being unable to find a studio to take it in for years. Apparently Activision/Vicarious Visions was in talks to create a 3D Donkey Kong game, but plans fell through. I don’t think Nintendo is deliberately sabotaging DK, but they themselves don’t know how to work with it, so a either a new studio or Retro has to take the helm. Metroid was similar in this regard, as prior to Retro and Mercury Steam, no one at Nintendo knew how to use the IP. My personal hope is Retro comes back after Prime 4 to complete the trilogy and with K. Rool finally returning. As for why DKCRHD exists, we are in the late stages of Switch. Nintendo is just throwing out half-baked ports to have something on the calendar as all studios are busy building software for Switch 2. I wouldn’t look to deeply into it.
@aidan_54829 күн бұрын
Honestly this is a very well thought out take that is probably the most likely. Everything we associate with modern DK (or at least country and on) has mainly been handled by Western developers. I didn't actually know retro fell into some financial troubles so that definitely explains a bit of it. Also I've always been fascinated with the amount of similarities both Donkey Kong and Metroid share
@amonner201029 күн бұрын
@@aidan_548 I want to say it was 2018 or 2019, back when those Star Fox Racing rumors were relevant, but employees at Retro were leaving some pretty nasty reviews regarding the management of the company and that a lot of issues were happening behind the scenes. Something was clearly wrong with the studio if the reviews and fact that their last newest title was in 2014 was anything to go by. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was the case as Tropical Freeze initially didn’t do well both because Wii U and because Metroid/Nintendo fans threw a fit over how this was a bad direction for Retro. Since then, rumors make it sound like Nintendo did try to find some western studios for DK with Activision and Ubisoft being candidates, however, it is Activision and Ubisoft. Neither company is well regarded for their development or good practices. Sort of sucks as the Crash Bandicoot team, or Mario + Rabbids team easily could have handled the IP. I hope with the newfound love for Retro DK, they come back after Prime 4. I really cannot see anyone else taking on DK at the moment. Most big western studios are going under currently, and thus likely will not work with Nintendo. Nintendo does have their Canadian studio with Next Level, but they seem to have found their niche with Mario sports and Luigi’s Mansion, so they likely cannot.

That could have been easily solved by giving DK to another company that had experience at making 2D Sidescrollers like WayForward for PlaytonicGames. Retro Studios' management has been a huge mess for years and when you take a look at Rare's trilogy that only took two years to make, Retro hasn't even made the third game, despite the first one being made 14 years ago. A lot of people has been dissapointed by how DK was handled lately and some even arguing they handle it even worse than the post-Rare/pre-Retro, and just taking a look at the Mario spin offs where DK is in, then look at the current state of the series, people can't help but think if Nintendo even cares about Donkey Kong anymore.

I just recently played through DKC tropical freeze - and to be honest while I liked it I wasn't crazy about it. THe music wasn't as good as the first two games but wasn't bad at all. I'm not crazy about the cartoony graphical style but you can discount that as me just being a hard core SNES stan. A few key things really bothered me though - the original DKC didn't have any momentum ramp up (aka you ran at top speed from the second you pressed the D pad) and the controls were incredibly tight whereas tropical Freeze while not bad had that little acceleration phase which was infuriating. Probably my biggest issue with Freeze were the macro level design decisions. The individual levels are great, but a) not getting to count your progress if you save at the checkpoints, the fact that the puzzle pieces DIDN'T count toward % completion is just bizarre, and the K levels got aggravating esp when you constantly had to go back to the map screen just to get Dixie kong (for god's sakes put a damn barrel in at the start of the stage), and how Dixie was 99% of the time the best kong to use. By the time I finished the game at 100% I was deeply ready for it to be just done and wasn't enjoying it anymore. I had no motivation to push for 200% at all. But love your videos. And btw Aidan you be cute AF!
@aidan_548Ай бұрын
I agree that Tropical Freeze is not a perfect game and honestly some of the major flaws you point out are flaws I have with it too. Particularly when it comes to the puzzle pieces not counting towards 100% which I still find to be fucking stupid and also how bad the balancing is with the other kings because it literally is Dixie 95% of the time, Cranky in some rare situational occurrences and you might as well not even bother using Diddy. Also the comment at the end is wild 😂💀

@StewNWT, Like you, I personally prefer the no-momentum mechanic of the original SNES versions but I think is subjective. I consider DKC TF one of the best platformer I've ever played, and I finished it 200% including shining gold time attacks. I enjoyed the OST a lot (although the style is more Diddy Kong Racing-like than DKC-like) and the level design. The momentum mechanic is fun, it's just different. Frankly I don't perceive the kong's unbalance as a problem: that's not a competitive multiplayer game. Dixie is just generally better, especially for first time exploration, while Cranky is better for certain levels and time attack. Diddy is a good balance between the two if you want to rush the level (Dixie is slower). Personally I have the most fun with Cranky. The only problem I had with the game is that the most original ideas are not easily presented at the beginning of the game (as it should, as a general marketing rule) and some of the best levels are even hidden. I would have appreciated a live orchestral OST given the great amount of jazzy tunes. Some gimmicks would have helped the game to feel fresher and have better reviews (e.g., think about unlocking Dixie and Cranky just a bit later in the game because they were imprisoned - this would have justified that they were somehow better than Diddy).
