Star Wars The Acolyte showed Osha turn Sol's lightsaber kyber crystal red when she became the Sith acolyte of Qimir (Darth Plagueis' apprentice). But why didn't Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber turn from blue to red in the prequel trilogy? The Vader comics and Jedi Survivor explain it!

True, its a disney Canon thing. Before that the accepted norm, even though it wasn't canon was that Red isn't a nature Adegan Crystal color, so Sith had gather the ingredients and a forge and sit for some times days pouring their dark side emotions into the furnace and build the crystal lattice by lattice. completely and utterly infusing it to the Dark Side. But here in the Acolyte. Disney didn't even follow their very own canon. And they did it in opinion to try and put Osha on a pedestal. To make her seem cooler than the likes of the Dark Siders that came before her. To put their stamp on it, instead of keeping with their own canon.

which is even more of a reason why it shouldnt have happened with osha. Disney made sure to make bleeding the crystal a deliberate act in multiple forms of media, that way it wouldnt conflict with the original 6. everytime we've seen it it was difficult and intentional. On top of that, that lightsaber shouldnt have even been functional anymore. they show the crystal completely dislodged and it looks like the emitter was broken. but i guess its not like theres super detailed info on how a lightsaber is supposed to work....

I still prefer the old lore that red crystals are synthetically creates as opposed to the variety of colors coming from naturally mined crystals. I feel that having the Sith forge their crystal is more consistent with Palpatine's remarks about the dark side being unnatural by Jedi standards. It had a more realistic mythos in my opinion.

It's just another way that the new characters that haven't earned their spot are given the reward by Disney writing. It's also very representative of people's views today. No one wants to work for anything. They want everything given to them. They don't think they should have to endure the struggles. But then that's how they forfeit the journey. And just like life itself, the journey is the real reward.

I had no issue with it. It was a cool moment. One of them deliberately corrupted the Kyber Crystal, the other one corrupted it inadvertently as her rage and sadness spilled out into the crystal. Both are good, both are fine. Even the bleeding of the Kyber in Jedi Survivor looked kinda different from these two projects. Having slight variation in the way the Kyber Crystals bleed is a good thing, in my opinion. We shouldn't have to just copy the comics. Let the bleeding process be unique from person to person.

My issue with it is your second point. "Inadvertently", in all the examples showed, one has to deliberately corrupt it with your hatred. Even palpatine says to "make" it bleed. That would be a better explanation as to why anakin's lightsaber didnt turn red. It would have been a more emotional scene if she deliberately turns it red, we can better see her pouring in her trauma and hatred for the jedi and Sol. It would also be a great representation of the Sith showing dominance over it and making it bleed.

@@kelevra7711 you're ignoring the whole subtext of Vader as a character. Him struggling with bleeding his crystal is a metaphor for his own internal struggle with his light side aspects. Vader is literally chosen by the force to restore balance and help defeat evil. Osha was made by dark side witches on a planet with unusual force properties, and physically split from her light side aspect. This has nothing to do with power levels and everything to do with alignment.
@kelevra7711

@@DanyTheMe talking of subtext? Are the witches really Darksiders or just different force users? Now they switch roles and Osha dips in the dark side for the first time, is able to forcechoke an other forcebeeing while bleeding a kybercrystal without having real sith eyes or doing it intentially? And the internal Conflict between Osha and Mae isnt that differently from Anis/Vaders internal conflict. @DanyTheMe
@DanyTheMe Ай бұрын
@@kelevra7711 There's no way to know things about the witches that haven't been shown yet, but hear me out cuz I get what you're saying. I'm saying the witches are dark side aligned, but this doesn't mean I think they're evil. We have people like windu who can channel the dark side without being evil. Let's really look at the twins. Mae was more aggressive as a child, but only out of fear of loosing her loved ones. She joins the sith, but with the secret intention of being able to find her sister. Even after having trained under Quimir we never see her use any dark side abilities. Force push and pull is all that girl ever does. Osha on the other hand is presented as well behaved, however we also see that she has no hesitation to leave her mother and sister behind in search of the things she wants. Her interest in the jedi is never about wanting to help others or a connection to Sol or the light side. It's about her wanting to learn their ways and wielding a lightsaber. Like anakin, she isn't taught the force choke, the ability comes to her in a moment of anger and frustration. Quimir's helmet spoke to her, as we've seen with Vader. If we're talking subtext, a big theme of this show is that jedi aren't above having flaws, and Sith having valid motivations before being fully taken by evil. The misdirection with the twins mirrors those themes. The angry little girl who lashes out at loss doesn't need to succumb to darkness The quiet respectful kid isn't above becoming a monster in their search for fulfillment.

It doesn't surprise me anymore how inept Disney have become in their treatment Star Wars. This show was supposed to be about the Sith... unsurprisingly it wasn't. In their attempt to vilify the Jedi they have actually made the Sith look weak. There was no mystery, no fear, no sense of menace, the darkside reduced to something akin to a 'lifestyle choice.'

Thanks for the in-depth look at Darth Vader's story around this Meg. The way the comics played that out really makes much more sense for the concept of bleeding a kyber crystal. When I saw this play out on the Acolyte, I thought immediately of the storyline shown in Jedi Survivor with the awakened high republic jedi shown when his lightsaber turns orange red. The Acolyte version felt more like emphasis of Osha's strong turn to the dark side in the moment, but it felt too simple or easy. I find the Darth Vader story much more realistic and meaningful than other versions showing something like this.

Kirak Infil'a was a Jedi from The High Republic era who undertook the Barash Vow for many years, a deep meditative sense that would surely have had his crystal respond to him and the strength of his discipline. Vader is still unbalanced and young, and he undergoes the light side force visions before he bleeds the crystal. I do like it more than Osha's, and I think Ben Solo's is also pretty quickly done (and yet he messes up the crystal and cracks it, pretty symbolic of how the process of shoving down his innate light with the tragedy he added to and was accused of broke him during his dark side fall), but you make barely mention of Jedi Survivor's. Dagan Gera is an emotionally unstable, impatient Jedi who fell to the dark after Tanalorr was invaded by the Nihil and the Jedi Order had him abandon it. It was his project, so you can understand the frustration, but he chose to kill the Jedi to get the remaining Tanalorr compass from his one ally, Santari, who cut his arm off and sealed him in stasis to give him a second chance. In Survivor, he's awakened, whines about Tanalorr, and then bleeds the crystal in 30 seconds! We got far more out of Osha than we ever did with Dagan. For me, it goes Vader > Ben = Osha > Dagan in terms of bleeding being depicted as a result. Dagan was a compelling villain, but he barely gets to show any goodness in him even in the flashbacks, where he's selfish and only listens to Santari because he has some love for her. Far easier to buy Osha's pain flowing out, even if the story to get there was mixed in execution. Sol isn't apologizing to her, he's justifying his actions instead of showing any remorse for making a bad decisions in a complicated situation that was escalating so quickly on all sides. He can't even fully justify it, seeing as he can barely understand how Osha and Mae are the same soul but in two bodies, but he still chose that angle instead of explaining it.

Perhaps the vergence in the force Sol mentioned was the reason Osha could bleed the crystal? Your explanation of Vader, and the reading of Grand Daddy Palps gave me shivers, and Mustafa, vergence? of Dark side force energy, contributed to Osha’s ability to bleed the crystal. I struggled with the choking as that was a technique for Masters and to have an ex- padawan with 6 years since using the force to pull it off was a bit stretching. Killing Sol, while a surprise, seemed anticlimactic at that point. Of course, the plot required the death for Vanestra’s sake. Coulda, sholda, woulda…Sigh! Great work SW Meg!

In my opinion the intensity of the bleeding depends entirely on how much pain one has the offer and the amount of inner turmoil they have. Osha's pain is a warm dream compared to all the suffering Vader's been through so it makes since his bleeding would be more intense. It isn't as much about power as it is the amount of pain you're pouring in at a time, and Vader had ALOT of pain. Even in Dagan’s case his bleeding didn’t seem as chaotic as Vader’s or even Ben Solo’s and was even able to it whilst casually trauma dumping on Cal. it seems it can be different for most. Vader and Ben struggled the most because they were both conflicted at the time.

It could also be interpreted as the lingering part of Anakin within Vader that Vader had to struggle against in order to complete the bleeding. If I recall, even Qimir seemed surprised.

Eh, Dagan Gera did it in a moment as Cal watched, and the Jedi series of games is one of my favorite recent Star Wars stories. I do think it was too easy, but I'm ok with letting it slide because she hit the height of her pain and betrayal just as she was touching the crystal. She "bled" it by accident, which would be a rare thing because you can't really schedule the moment your heart/will is crushed and you fall to the darkside ahead of time. Maybe not the narrative choice I would have made, but it effectively demonstrated "and this was the moment Osha fell to the dark side" very clearly.

I think this works for Dagon because its going the route of dark jedi and not sith. For instance, Dagons crystal would have also gone through all of the same trauma he did during the battle of tanalor. add on top of that being betrayed by the jedi and his master and he and his crystal went through a lot together. So in this instance, the crystal is basically already primed to be bled

Instead of all that lovey-dovey scene at the end you can show how she gets out of trance holding Sol's LS and it changes color, bleeds, and Smylo Ren comes and puts his hand on her shoulder with deep meaningfull look. Its that easy to make bleeding inside the show and make it canon-wise. Instead of changing color when she activates it, LS could simply become unstable, produsing some weird red lightning signifying that it starts bleeding. This would still be closer to canon.

I loved seeing Osha bleed Sol's crystal as both a physical & visual representation of her emotional state. I was taken aback with how fast Dagan did it in Jedi: Survivor tbh, but because of how fast it happened, I didn't question the speed of Osha bleeding Sol's crystal as "less than" or "breaking canon".

Dagan was NOT the same situation as Osha. Dagan bled his own crystal, not another force user’s. Makes sense he’d be able to more easily turn it to his will since it already had a connection to him. Sol’s? If anything, I would think it would be more difficult to turn for Osha since he cared deeply for her. You’d think it would have fought her. Nope. Just took a single touch. Also, Sol’s hilt has to be one of the weakest seen on screen. We’ve seen lightsabers drop from much higher being able to survive. Also never saw the glass panel. Who has glass on their hilt?

The exposed crystal had nothing to do with why it was able to bleed. It was exposed to show the crystal bleed. Normally the crystal is covered so the crack was way to show the audience what was going on. I dont think Osha's turning the crystal red was unearned or easier than Anakin's. The difference was Osha was no longer conflicted. Anakin even after the youngling kills, the death of Padme & his crippling duel with Obi-Wan he is shown in the comics still being pulled by the Lightside. He considers seeking out Obi-Wan and begging for his forgiveness. It is cliche but "From a Certain Point of View " storytelling was part of the difference. What I mean is Anakin grew up in a Jedi Order Era where he saw a lot of justification of actions that were inconsistent with the Jedi code. He saw Peacemakers become Generals that caused massive death & destruction. Those actions gave Anakin a much more grey POV of the Jedi enabling his conflicting. Whereas on the other hand Osha learning the truth about Sol's deception by omission, Sol killing her mother, the cover up and the fact had the Jedi just minded their own business none of the needless death would have occurred. There was nothing redeemable about the Jedi in Osha's mind after learning the truth. She idealized the Jedi and held certain beliefs about their morality then seeing it all seemingly was a lie expedited her turn to the darkside. A jedi can also heal a crystal and restore it to its pre-sith color. The Ahoska novel has a scene at the end where she demonstrates crystal healing.

OSHA was genuinely full of rage, and her training was incomplete. Anakin was full of sorrow over his mother with the Tuskens. He was full of fear, anger and confusion when he fought Obi Wan. And his crystal was shielded in the hilt. Sol's saber was damaged and the crystal exposed. That allowed her to unconsciously bleed it. I am not a fan of the whole bleeding crystal thing, but that's what we're working with, so we have to live with it.

@@chappelle23 it's possible it was common in that era. But it's not like Anakin didn't have to replace his saber multiple times.
@chappelle23
@chappelle23 Ай бұрын
@@PsychoStreak there was a period where they did have more ornate designs. They did still have to consider dueling dark and fallen jedi. Glass is still a stupid choice or at least glass that fragile. You would think if they were going to have an external glass component, which was never seen in the previous shots of his hilt, that it would be pretty durable. Just like when the Wookie padawan was given the sturdy wood material as durable as metal for his saber in CW. Point is that it's still a melee weapon and glass is a poor choice. Sol's saber could have been clipped by Qimir during their duel exposing the crystal, but no. Glass... I don't know which was first with exposing the crystal, the lore or the customs, but a lot of those are supposed to be from battle damage. Either from a blaster, explosion, or another saber. They also don't have the crystals sticking out where you would be touching it with a regular grip. You'd have to stick your finger in the chamber. Also, how is that misaligned crystal not causing issues?? Lightsabers are supposed to be highly volatile if not built properly. Anakin only had to replace his lightsaber once as far as I remember. Which was sliced in half, not thrown across a courtyard... Obi-wan had to replace his twice. One was tossed into a bottomless pit and the other was taken by the Geonosians.

I guarantee you they had their own paths to go through to get their red kyber crystal. As for Osha, she was created from the force vergence that the coven’s base was built on top of. They were standing right on top of it when she bled the crystal.

(edit: I forgot to thank OP, in my rant, for their post it was really good) The thing is, is that George Lucas has explained how Canon is defined. To me by definition, of what he's explained and what is established, the OT, PT, and Clone Wars (animated) was the Canon. Anything, and I mean anything outside the films/motion picture is not Canon, i.e. books, comics, etc. Those are the rules George Lucas set for Legends(EU)/Canon. Legends(EU) had to be approved by him, before it was made into film. This was to prevent contradiction, and inconsistencies with continuity. Because, once it was made into film, it was bona fide. So, with that said: George Lucas did not provide a direct canonical explanation in the Star Wars films or in his own statements about why Sith lightsabers are red [he hadn't approved that yet]. In the Star Wars films and related canon sources, the color of a lightsaber blade typically reflects the Jedi or Sith's connection to the Force and their personal Kyber Crystal. Star Wars Legends (the Expanded Universe {EU}), red lightsaber crystals were synthetic and used by Sith to signify their allegiance to the dark side of the Force. This distinction was carried over into the prequel trilogy, where Sith lightsabers continued to be red, but George Lucas himself did not explicitly state this in the films or in his canonical statements. Therefore, while red lightsabers are associated with Sith, George Lucas's direct canonical explanation for why Sith lightsabers are red is not provided in the Star Wars films or his own statements. Disney-LucasFilm, as deconstructed and retconned what has come before it. The don't use him as an advisor. They have convoluted and or contradicted Canon. They've done this by including their recreated/redefined Legends (EU) into Canon. Meaning the books, comics, devise creators with differentiated concepts, etc. sources outside the films to explain how lightsabers are red. All these new story tellers from the Lucasfilm story team have included some new way or new idea, and call it Canon. But, they can't even agree on which source to use, and just change ideas and or concepts from one creator of the story and or film to another. What we see in the film is not consistent with their own Legends (EU) sources. They also redefined what is Canon, by expanding the definition to (their) books and comics, etc. They have singled handedly broke the continuity of what George Lucas created. This is by far the biggest issue with the fans (Hardcore {as opposed to casual fans}). The way the lightsaber turns red in this way, is by far the laziest way they could've done this, and they did it in Canon. So, now that solidifies how it's done. You don't know how detrimental that is. It's solidified. It's now just a glorified mood ring. If they thought that the films by Rian Johnson divided the fandom, or was divisive ....woah, wait til this sinks in with the Canon hardcore fans, they consider this, "blasphemy." Disney, has not let it sink in yet how a beloved franchise, if the destroyed, will turn on you on masse. But, I think Disney will sink even into lower levels.

The only question that needs to be asked is, if they have so much material suggesting forming a red kyber Crystal is done one way, why did they just decide to do it differently? She was holding back 16 years of rage. So what was Anakin doing those 21 years, where he endured slavery, abuse, discrimination, the death of his mother, the slaughtering of tusken raiders, giving into his hatred to kill Count Dooku, being an accessory to the death of Mace Windu, murdering dozens of his fellow Jedi and slaughtering younglings, choking his wife to near death out of fury and fighting his former master to the death? Everything was just hunky dory in the mind of young Ani. Overall, I don't think it's that huge of a deal. It's just the fact that the Acolyte is the one changing SW lore. SW lore has been anything but consistent, but the fact that a show that is as laughably bad as the Acolyte is the one responsible for the lore changes, people are obviously not happy about that. If this happened in, say, Season 2 of Kenobi, it'd likely be more well received. It also just doesn't hit, because the idea that a kyber crystal bleeding being a long and arduous task is more satisfying, whereas this treats it more like a mood ring.

I'll do you one better. Anakin was a Jedi for HOW long? A Clone Wars General that saved HOW many people? I believe he had genuine love for Padme AND Obi-Wan, but especially Padme. When he choked her out, his glaring emotion wasn't rage or fear or pain, it was greed. Even when he killed the younglings, those emotions didn't exist...he knew they had no shot...narcissism was becoming prevalent in his demeanor, and wasn't allowing the pain, rage, and fear to manifest strong enough to bleed that crystal in the prequels. Osha, by contrast, tells Mae, that her hatred for her combined with the grief of her mother dying, which was tied to thinking Mae was responsible, PREVENTED her from becoming a Jedi. And, like you said, 16 years of hatred festering within her, now compounded by more hatred towards Mae because it prevented her from her dream, the instant transition from hating her sister to hating her master even more, if that was possible, was portrayed awesomely on screen. I loved every second of Osha approaching Sol, anger coming to a boil, whispering, "Stop talking", then Force choking him to death...fantastic! Now, for a simpler explanation: The prequels did stuff more awesomely than the originals, and as time goes on and technology gets better, even more awesome stuff is going to continue to happen that was impossible back in the day. Thinking back to the Mortis arc, Anakin, when pressed, soundly defeated both the son and the daughter. If he had balance that rivaled the father, then he needed pushes to create the emotions needed to bleed a crystal. Plus, that crystal he bled belonged to a very powerful Jedi. I'm rambling now, lol. Episode 8 of The Acolyte was incredible.

Actually I always thought one has to kill a person with full hate in order to turn the lightsaber red. I guess Osha has fullfilled this demand. Maybe there are different versions told in the stories. And it is good they did not make one more boring episode 7 out of it. And it showed the viewer - even she still lookes nice and shocked about what she just has done - she has turned already to the dark side. I liked this turn of event.

Good video. The haters simply have no idea about star wars. Cool video. Everyone wonders why Osha could make the crystal bleed and Vader couldn't. Well, Anakin was more desperate than hateful. He felt anger, but not like Osha. His hatred for Obiwan was limited. At least he didn't kill his mother. In some scenes you could see Anakin crying as he slaughtered the Separatists. Killing the younglings and Jedi was the only way to save Padme. It also seemed forced rather than natural. During his bloodlust, his crystal was in the lightsaber. That's why he didn't bleed. Anakin was too emotionally unstable and distracted to let the crystal bleed. He hated everything and everyone and didn't know what he was doing. Osha, on the other hand, had a focused hatred that was directed at one person at a time. She was in her right mind, but her disappointment and frustration was more focused than Anakin's, who simply did what Palpatine asked. She did it of her own free will. Besides, Anakin was still unbalanced in the Force. The good was still present in him. You also have to remember that it wasn't her own lightsaber. Also, Qimir hinted that Sol was hiding his dark side. Perhaps the crystal was already under pressure from Sol. The best reason could also be the influence of Qimir and the fact that his lightsaber was damaged by mae and the crystal was exposed so that Osha had direct contact with the crystal. With Anakin it was just more complicated. Details that Star Wars fans tend to overlook. 🙂

It did need to be an epic moment. This reveals this series' faults. The core is there, but the details and the story-telling are weak. I've said this several times, but the series needs to be 10-12 episodes with deeper and more developed main characters. It didn't need to be a big mystery. It works better as a linear series with the hubris of the Jedi revealed early to show us why this downfall is tragic for all of the characters involved. Hopefully, if a 2nd season is given the greenlight, then they will consider all of the criticism and take the constructive criticism to make it so much better.

I guess folks can justify this anyway they want based on whether they liked the Acolyte or not. For me, the writing for this show was so bad and this was just another example of it. There was no real build up of Osha’s long term pain and suffering that led to this moment where it was believable she could do this. The overall writing and character development for Mae and Osha was so bad. They never felt like compelling characters, it was difficult to understand their motivations throughout the entire show, which made it hard to have any real interest in them as an audience.
