Despite all the disagreement, the separation happen smoothly without any bloodshed from both side. Im not saying tungku decision is the best but at the same time it is not the worst. Tungku could become a dictator and accusing LKY and his supporter as pro communist to disposed them just like how suharto did to depose any of his political rival in indonesia. In the end tungku choose not to do it because he know if that have been done malaysia will turn to be more chaotic. Dont forget that malaysia is facing communist insurgency and indonesia confrontation at that time. Early 60 is the chaotic era for malaysian. Even if tungku agree with LKY idea, other malay nationalist supporter will not and dispose tunku for different pro malay nationalist leader. Just like malaysia politic today where pro malay nationalist supporter vote for different pro malay nationalist political party instead of UMNO. As malay malaysia i personally support the malaysia for malaysia concept by LKY but most malay around wont. They prefer malaysia to be a homogenous country like japan, korea or gulf arab where only one ethnic group in charge. I believe that impossible based on our population, geography and economy. They view non malay as outsider and hope non malay slowly immigrate to other country or assimilate to be malay. Even if that happen, immigrant from different country will replace them. Let face it, multicultural community have been part of foundation in this region since malacca sultanate. It have been part of our history from beginning and will continue in the future.

From 8:45 - (paraphrasing): the expulsion of Singapore shocked not just Singapore, but the whole world. because it was unprecedented for a state to be ejected from a political union. Two questions: 1) What was the true intent of Tunku Abdul Rahman and the KL leaders in expelling Singapore (and Lee Kuan Yew)? and 2) Was it really an expulsion? Or was it a negotiated separation? I'll answer the 2nd question first. Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) had in early 1965 suggested that Singapore be "hived off" from the Federation. His proposal was for Singapore to be a "confederated" state instead of a federated state. This would mean that Singapore would have more autonomy, and KL would only be concerned with Foreign Affairs and Defence of Singapore. All other matters would solely be governed by Singapore, with no interference from the Federal Govt. Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) was intrigued by the proposal and authorised Goh Keng Swee to work out the terms of "hiving off" Singapore from the Federation. Goh met with Tun Razak (Abdul Razak Hussein), Deputy Prime Minister to negotiate this arrangement. BUT he (says he) persuaded the Malaysians that the only real solution was for Singapore to secede completely. Goh also said that the Malaysians did not need much persuasion, being of the same opinion that "Singapore must get out". Perhaps, they had a hidden agenda? Whatever hidden agenda the Malaysians might have had, we only have the narrative from Goh's "Albatross File" (sghistoryunauthorised.blogspot.com/2023/04/commentary-what-release-of-goh-keng.html). And the conclusion that separation was a negotiated process and by mutual consent. From the above, the readiness of the Malaysian leaders to "expel" Singapore relates to the first question: Why? Were there hidden agenda and stratagems? No country willingly allows a part of their union to secede. Singapore was relatively richer than the other states and contributed more than its fair share to the federal budget (5:07). Why was KL so ready to lose their richest state? Perhaps, because Singapore was seen as a non-viable state on her own? Without the backstop of Peninsula Malaysia, and her hinterland, Singapore was expected to fail economically, and then it would need to crawl back to KL and beg to be re-admitted and have no choice but to accept whatever terms KL would dictate. IOW, KL allowed Singapore to secede/separate because KL expected Singapore to fail and seek readmission later down the line. Except, Singapore not only did not fail, but succeeded. Wildly.
@bell-xk5ddАй бұрын

But, like when you are excluded from a "club" or fired from your job, when one door closes another can open up if you embrace it. LKY seized the opportunity to make Singapore better than Malaysia and succeeded through law and order, anti-Communism, multi-culturalism, English as the business language, and meritocracy over favoritism/caste system. You omitted the fact that 'Tanah Melayu' (Peninsular Malaya) achieved independence first. Subsequently, they invited Singapore, Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei to join them as an independent nation, as these territories were still under British colonialism at that time. Had they not joined, their independence might have been delayed, similar to Brunei, which gained independence in 1984. Furthermore, if Tanah Melayu had accepted Singapore's political views, it would have undermined the original objective of Tanah Melayu's independence, which was to reject the concept of the Malayan Union

Malaysia had all the stars & planets aligned for its rise after the split in 1965. However, we’ve seen how Singapore had risen from the dumps from having practically NOTHING as compared to MALAYSIA which had EVERYTHING ! One can say that Malaysia & Singapore were born as twins but given the situation then in 1965 after the split, Malaysia should have advance much faster and higher than Singapore ! What happened ? We all know that Singapore with its MERITOCRACY had continued rising till today whilst Malaysia with its AFFIRMATIVE ACTION ( otherwise aka Aparteid ) had continued to go the other way. Instead of Rm : S$ should be 3:1 we’re seeing S$ 1 : RM 3 now. The Malaysian leaders , past & current, knew what had happened but chose to remain with its way of exploiting the ‘belief of Malays that their rights were protected from external threats by other races mainly the Chinese & Indians’ when in actual fact the leaders were just enriching themselves at the expense of the Malays. The non-Malays, with its reducing numbers, were NEVER relevant. One can safely say that Malaysia will continue with its downfall as long as the Affirmative Actions ( which should have expired in the 90s per the original Federal Constitution enforced in 1957.

Was Singapore forced to leave Malaysia? On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia to become an independent and sovereign state. The separation was the result of deep political and economic differences between the ruling parties of Singapore and Malaysia, which created communal tensions that resulted in racial riots in July and September 1964.

When Singapore was kicked out of the Malaysian Federation, it renders the MA63 null and void. There for technically Malaysia ceased to exist with the expulsion of Singapore unless a new agreement was made to indicate the exclusion of Singapore in the Malaysian Federation. Either that or Singapore is still a part of Malaysia.

Was Singapore a Chinese colony? Singapore had previously been established as a British colony since 1824, and had been governed as part of the Straits Settlements since 1826. The colony was created when the Straits Settlements was dissolved shortly after the Japanese occupation of Singapore ended in 1945.

Mutual Agreement or Expulsion? - While the decision to separate was initiated by the Malaysian federal government, it was not a unilateral expulsion and has not officially taken place yet(i.e. the Separation Agreement was enforced but the expulsion was only an overwhelmingly Parliamentary vote as they feared the PAP dominance amongst other reasons. Singapore’s leaders, particularly Lee Kuan Yew, recognized that the relationship was no longer viable and agreed to the separation. - The separation was formalized through the Singapore Independence Agreement, signed on August 7, 1965, by representatives of both Singapore and Malaysia. Lee Kuan Yew went to the UK to negotiate the terms of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia because the British government was still a key player in the region’s political and defense matters. At the time, Malaysia (including Singapore) was part of the Commonwealth, and Britain had strategic interests in ensuring a stable transition. Why go to the UK: 1. British Involvement in the Malaysia Agreement (1963) - The UK had played a major role in the formation of Malaysia in 1963, and any legal or constitutional changes required British approval. 2. Ensuring International Legitimacy - By securing British endorsement, Singapore could ensure that the separation was recognised globally and that there would be no legal disputes over sovereignty. - On August 9, 1965, Singapore officially became an independent nation.
