Who was the first king of Egypt? Scholars constantly debate that question. One candidate though is the mysterious figure known simply known as king Scorpion. Thought at one time to have been a mythical figure, it turns out that king who's symbol or insignia was a Scorpion actually did exist. The discovery of his tomb in the city of Abydos has caused archaeologists to reexamine what they thought they knew about Egypt's earliest history.

The Scorpion King came so early in Egyptian history that the glyph of the scorpion was still depicted with a tail. The tail was typically removed in later inscriptions for apotropaic effect.

Yeah, I also have studied the history of Mesopotamia more, but when the two interact, it's pretty super interesting, especially during the late Bronze Age. If you get a chance, take a look at the Amarna letters between the rulers of Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, the Mitanni and the Hittites. It's really cool how all of these peoples interacted with each other. Thanks again for stopping by, I really appreciate it!

The ceremonial mace is actually linked to Scorpion II not Scorpion I and some archeologists believe he was actually King Namer, the first king to unify upper and lower Egypt. Although this is up for debate and other archeologists believe that Namer was Scorpion II's successor. Namer has his own separate macehead which depicts a similar scene to the Scorpion macehead. If they were the same person I'm not sure why he would need two of the things.
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for stopping by and your comment. Yes, that is one theory... the most recent books that I used (Romer, Wilkenson - see video description for link to "Sources and Recommended Reading") though identify the macehead as belonging to a single king Scorpion. The macehead was also found in Hierakonopolis many years before the U-j tomb was discovered in 1998 and then later fully excavated with Carbon-14 dating in 2002, which dates the tomb to the year 3200 BCE, a few centuries earlier than Narmer is believed to have lived. So some think that the macehead could have been a sort of heirloom that was passed down to future kings, for example a Scorpion II if he did indeed exist. I agree that Narmer was the first king to unify upper and lower Egypt because he is depicted wearing the dual crown representing both, but I don't know if he is indeed Scorpion II. That's something I'd have to delve further into. I'll be doing a short video on Narmer soon, more just about who he was and why he was important, but in a month or two I'll be starting a podcast on predynastic and early dynastic Egypt (after the ones on Assyria and a new one on Canaan are complete) where I'll hopefully delve into this topic in more depth. Thanks again for your comments, I really appreciate them as I too learn from them and love hearing your thoughts. Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks and stay safe!

H. W. F. Saggs & David Diringer put Cuneiform as 'probable' a few hundred years older than Egypt's Hieroglyphics. Evidence of a long development period includes token accounting: tokens put in a clay pot as a record of goofs received. Later tokens of different shapes and sizes were impressed on the outside of the pot. We find these abstract symbols alongside early pictographs.

Haha so I've heard! You can definitely expect more on ancient Egyptian history, that's for sure. With regard to another Scorpion, many scholars believe that there was another king of the same name (we'll call him Scorpion II), but very little other than the name exists about him. Many also believe that the two Scorpion kings are one and the same person, but this again is hard to prove if at all. Lots of theories, little conclusive proof. The next king I"ll touch up on will be Narmer and then we'll get into the Early Dynastic Period of Egypt. Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it!

Is there a difference between being "king of Egypt" and being "Pharaoh of Egypt"? I know some kings of Egypt wore the red crown or white crown, and some wore both. But I have seen some kings wearing a blue head dress, like Tutankhamen, and many others wearing the blue and gold striped head dress, like Thutmose, or the Sphinx. What are those head dress items for? What types of weapons did Narmer equip his army with, and how much did that change over the next several hundred years? I know Philip of Macedon restructured his army and Alexander used those ideas quite well. Did anything like that happen in Egypt? When and how was currency developed in Egypt? You have done such a phenomenal job with all these videos, I thought you would be a good person to ask.

Ancient Egypt (Kemet) wasn't exactly "unified". One kingdom (Ta-Shemau/Upper Egypt) conquered another one (Ta-Mehu in the Nile's Delta). The kings of ancient Egypt for centuries (over a millennium?) remained kings of Two Lands (Tawi), maybe similar to "personal unions" known from Medieval and later Europe.

@@TheHOUSEOFELIJAH Libyans, Amazigh, Qus and Ethiopians are all different people. What was considered ancient Egypt was inhabited by different ethnic groups, mainly black and brown African. Around 3150 BCE, two kingdoms existed Ta-Shemau and Ta-Mehu. People must have identified themselves with those kingdoms, because the rulers of the "united" Egypt related to them for a long time after the "unification".

I wish we had a similar well preserved history and artifacts in Mesopotamia. Many greeks believed that the gods tales where actually based on real people who founded nations. (Comparable to the biblical Noahs sons or Adam and his descendants). So i wonder if a real guy like king scorpion was really behind later tales and religions of gods (like Re, Osiris, Seth, Isis, etc...) i think guys like Manetho and Diodorus actually believed that the gods where people who ruled on earth before the pharaohs and the kingdom of Egypt was founded.

Not only was he the first to write but he also lived in present day Iraq and then migrated to Egypt. Both historical evidence and religious stories tells us time and time again that humanity and civilization moved like this Mesopotamia>Levant>Egypt. Hi Blue, great to hear from you! Yes, I did see that video...it's by Pete from History Time on another one of his channels. It's really cool stuff! You're in luck in though, I'll also be putting out a history of Canaan in the next month, probably as an extended podcast... I have most of the script done but I'll have to see which format will be better for it. More importantly, I hope that you're staying well during this unprecedented time. Stay strong and thank you!

Hi every one , Nice video. At 2:22 . The person in the claws of the Scorpion is the LIBRA constellation. and Behind wih an arc Sagitarius, just ask google . All this is STARS representations. It is now known that the stars which compose it were linked to the claws of the scorpion in the past, approximately 5000 years, but that everything being in movement, today they form 2 distinct constellations. Being the most obvious constellation in the sky in my opinion with Orion. I mean the Scorpio constellation is really evident by its shape of actually representing a Scorpio. In my opinion. This is why it stimulated the imaginations of our ancestors and it will continue to do so. In 3200 BC , when equinoxe happen , it was in the scoprion constellation.; I MEAN Spring the 23 mars we knwo at this date happen in the corpion , due TO the EQUINOXE PRECESSION

Hey Cy ! I really LOVE your stuff, but i just have a beef with you over the use of one teeny tiny word, which unfortunately you do not use in its scientific appelation but in its common language, semantically confusing, meaning, which has as consequences that many ignorant people continue to mis-understand the word, and thus attack real scientific facts, in particular the undeniable fact of evolution by natural selection, which is key to understanding the world. I mean of course the word "theory" at 5:49 to speak of what you should correctly refer to as a "hypothesis" !! Otherwise, you use the word theory to mean something which is unsubstantiated and iffy, whereas in the scientific sense, it is a strong and coherent explanatory framework, like for relativity or evolution. By using "theory" instead of "hypothesis" which is correct here, you are giving ammunition to the anti-science people :-(. So please, use "hypothesis" whenever it is more accurate, and keep theory for other contexts where there really are complete theories (like there can be competing theories for the Bronze Age Collapse, with multiple hypothesis in each, evidence etc.) We must NOT feed the ignoramuses who ultimately harm humanity with their irrational fantasies. Maybe Covid-19 will knock some sense into them, but I doubt it.

Hi, thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it. You know, I never thought about this choice of words but what you say makes a lot of sense. Like you I also want to be as fact-based/scientific as possible (no alien "theories" here). I will do my best to use the word hypothesis when relevant. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
