Agreed. Even when the those Rouge Warbirds from that off-shoot of the Romulan Empire (Tal'shi'ar? Or something) go to attack the Founders home world in DS9 they send over 100 dominion ships to deal with like 5 Warbirds iirc. They didnt want to take any chances and they wanted to annihilate them with little losses so they sent a fucking massive fleet to deal with a small amount of Warbirds with a few Klingon ships backing them up. Warbirds are menacing.

@caffeinedelusions7 жыл бұрын
STO isn't canon so much as it is 'canon consistent'. Essentially, it's one branch of Expanded Universe; a branch that conflicts with the Relaunch Novels. Granted, I like it better than the Nutrek movies, so I'd LIKE it to be Canon, and it's the branch of Expanded Universe that is interesting to me... but I'm reasonably certain that the studios that decide what is and is not canon wouldn't be able to agree on whether or not to include it.
@caffeinedelusions7 жыл бұрын
I think, Earl, that as a fan of STO, I am quite sorrowful that it isn't the fans who decide what's canon in the franchise. That right falling to squabbling studio and television executives has been a major detriment to the franchise as a whole.

The D7 Klingon Battleship is barely any larger then K'tinga. Not a practically large ship. The TOS Romulan BoP is an utterly tiny ship, barely anymore massive the TOS Enterprise's own saucer section alone. Generation Tech is looking for the BIGGEST ships in TREK, not the smaller ships. But the Negh'Var, so far teh largest Klingon warship in Canon, should be on the list. But the way I made my first comment was to enthuse people to add to the list.
@TalesOfWar7 жыл бұрын
Size is also a bit of a funny thing in Trek too. It's always been about high tech, compact size for the most part. Compared to other franchises the ships are tiny, but they could absolutely annihilate most other franchise ships too with ease. The Defiant could smash pretty much anything it went up against 1 on 1, even outnumbered. The Dreadnaught's of TOS were also not much bigger than a Connie, just with heavier armour and more weapons. Voyager was also kicking the shit out of Borg left and right and that ship was barely bigger than the Constitution class, a pretty tiny ship for the time period where things like the Galaxy and Nebula class were running around. Hell, even the ancient Excelsiors dwarf the Intrepid class and they were like 100 years old by the time Voyager was launched.
@Son37Lumiere7 жыл бұрын
+TalesOfWar Voyager was largely helpless for much of the series except for two or three times they got special upgrades, they really only kicked Borg ass when alternate timeline Janeway gave them the means to make their shields and torpedoes 1000 times more powerful.
@PaxTorumin7 жыл бұрын
The two superweapons are actually pretty different. The Death Star's superlaser blasts a planet into vapor via brute force or perhaps some kind of destructive reaction with the planet's mass. The Scimitar's thalaron weapon irradiates the surface of a planet, killing everything alive, but without knocking over a single brick... or 24th century equivalent. Of course if you really want to compare weapons of mass destruction, both of these examples are laughably immense indulgences of megalomania and opulence. A single torpedo loaded with the right mix of trilithium and other compounds can cause a star to collapse in a most peculiar manner, generating a powerful shockwave that can obliterate Earth sized planets in seconds. It also probably leaves the region dangerously radioactive for quite some time as well. I think even Emperor Palpatine would impressed by a such a weapon. Small enough to be hidden in a cargo container, but powerful enough to remove a point of light from the star charts.

@caffeinedelusions7 жыл бұрын
Slight detail error; Vor'cha class attack cruisers were developed using Federation aid. Check the Nacelles; those are of a distinctly Federation design. Most preceding Klingon ships (like the variations on the Bird of Prey) included winglike 'warp foils' instead of nacelles. It's far more likely that the Vor'cha was designed to counter Romulans, because by the time it entered development the Federation and Klingons had an established functional alliance. There's also a hard distinction between Star Wars hyperdrives and Star Trek Transwarp. Specifically, Hyperdrives are THEORETICALLY omnidirectional, but require the use of a navigation computer to travel on safe precharted hyperspace routes. Transwarp drives are an unstable propulsion technology UNLESS you have established a Transwarp Network of actual stabilized corridors through transwarp space. Essentially, Hyperspace you're launching yourself with a catapult, so you'd better HOPE the guy firing the thing did the proper calculations for you to land in the right place, and that there's not an inconvenient helicopter on route, while Transwarp you're taking the freeway (which someone hopefully actually BUILT before you got on the onramp, otherwise you're gonna drop right off the ramp).

I agree with Son37, but back on Borg v Replicators, good question! I don't know in the fictional universes, but both are actually potential realities for earth's future & in that setting I say the Borg is MUCH more sinister. Replicators we'd spot & have the resourses to destroy fairly early on in their development (particularly with a virus or inbuilt killswitch when we designed them). Borg are more like that stargate species that give vaccinations to double life expectancy but also cause infertility - they assimilate us in innocent looking ways, with facebook & youtube & twitter, we choose to use constant apps, will choose to wear glasses with screens embedded & then choose an ocular implant & auto-status update/twitter comment from our thoughts instead of writing, add electronic braces to limbs & exoskeletons to increase strength, first in the military & then extending into workplaces then everyday life & so on. At what point do we say "we are Borg" & force assimilation on others? - bosses already view anyone without an online profile as suspicious in job interviews & reject them

The ship type if closely resembles (The Vor'Cha) is often seen on Ds9 and the odd episode of TNG and can be seen momentarily in this video too.

As a 71 year old Treki,, a retired pilot and military Officer, I will give you an update on the Orville, a star ship featured on the Star Trek 2017 Comedy series which actually supports today's most advanced active service space craft. Other than a unique streamlined vessel I am sure has interstellar capability. Its power and military defense were nuclear and may still be. The tail of the Orville is split into three sections, the center circular section which is the anti gravity drive is flanked by two other sections which serve as mostly additional armament protecting the anti gravity drive. If you search the internet you will find the TR3b. The circle section at the base of the craft is the Mercury Plasma Gravitational Drive, like the Orville. The Tr3b is a Nuclear Driven copy of the Zeta War Craft anti-matter powered craft from the Zeta Reticuli System, 35 light years distant. (Today's Romulans which are 4 foot tall grays) This information must be 20 years old at least. I am sure by now we probably have anti-matter drive which makes us on par with other craft from other civilizations. We can take ET home. The ore needed for anti-matter comes from a non oxygenated, non solar originated satellite, Like the Moon. Which, as I understand, is being mined for this and other rare earths by another civilization which told us to stay away. . While Star Trek is a glimpse of a future that we will one day see, the new Trek comedy, which is a good action series, is closer to today. Space is the black water Navy. We sail it's seas.

Has anyone ever noticed that Romulan ships tend to be "bigger than they actually are"? Look at the D'dederix for a prime example. The only truly solid piece is the front head/beak looking structure, and it is tall and relatively narrow and its length is but a fraction of the total vessel length. The majority of the remainder is those two large clamshell pieces that aren't very thick enclosing a hollow space large enough to hold the entirety of the Galaxy class Enterprise-D. Its mass is spread thin over a large space with a lot of empty volume --there's not nearly as much ship there as its raw measurements imply. If you were to take the same amount of mass and functional space and compact it into a design that isn't spread out, it might very well be smaller than the Galaxy class but it's poofed up to be much larger. Other designs like the Scimitar and Mo'Gai accomplish a similar "greater size for the same or less materials and usable space" effect by way of a relatively small core ship with huge wings attached that spread the ship's mass over a wide space. Again, if you compact that mass / usable space down to not be spread out the total size would be no more and in fact probably less than other ships of their class. One could argue it's that way because their ships are designed to be evocative of hunting birds, and that's how birds are structured, but I think there's another reason. Romulans, if you think about it, are projecting bigger than they are on almost every level and their ships are a reflection of that. They call themselves a Star Empire, but they're an offshoot of Vulcans and thus much younger than any other major race in the region outside of humanity. The Federation got to be the size and power it is by combining forces of several major races, with humanity only the glue holding the alliance together, the Romulans are much younger than most Federation members yet we are expected to believe they are a match for the multi-species Federation and ancient Klingon empire. We don't know how many ships they have, or how many worlds in their "Star Empire". We don't know the size of the territory they actually control. For all we know, the Romulan Neutral Zone may encompass an area they are spread thinly through at best with the majority of their forces concentrated on the border. Hollow and inflated, like their ships. But very intimidating! Their ships operate under cloak, we don't know how many there are only how many we see at any given time. They could well be shuffling the same ships around to appear in different places and make it seem like their fleet is larger than it is. When they show themselves, though, boy is it dramatic. They almost always outnumber the enemy when they reveal themselves, and those ships look HUGE and thus so very menacing. It's smoke and mirrors though, to at least some degree. Their ships are probably the most advanced in the region next to those of Starfleet, and are formidable yes but not so much as they appear. They rarely attack, even though they seem to have superior numbers and power, they instead warn, threaten, and intimidate. They only fight when they have to and run from confrontations that aren't heavily in their favor. This is in contrast to the Klingons, whose tech level is less advanced than their rivals but they truly do have big numbers and throw three times the number of ships their enemies do at any problem. They fight at the drop of a hat, and shrug off losses as no big deal. They can replace them. I don't think the Romulans can, and their size and numbers are exaggerated. By being mysterious, with a well-crafted intimidating image, they keep others from probing too deeply and finding out the truth about the real Romulan numbers and resources. That frightening image, plus a very pro-active covert action and intelligence game, keeps them at least seemingly competitive with rivals that both vastly outnumber, outman, and outpower them. It's fascinating.

Of course, the Borg plan might've worked out a little better if they'd taken the obvious option of travelling into the past far, far away and THEN travelling to Earth. Maybe those smaller sphere's don't have the super-duper trans-warp drive for some reason, but they never tell us if that's an issue. It also might've been prudent to back a few hundred years earlier. Like before nukes and repeating firearms etc. But then we wouldn't have gotten the whole Federation history lesson.
@joeridestrijcker4457 жыл бұрын
did the guy in the vid say that the sphere is 700m diameter.... and in the film you see the sphere launching/firing dozens of torpedoes/charges that seem to do little more than make drunk people trip or cyclists fall down; I'd think a ship that size from the 24th century and tech from hundreds or species at their disposal, would be able to shoot much more formidable weapons to destroy a small and defenseless camping site; heck, one 'old fashioned' nuke would have done the trick; or in extremis, transport a handful of drones to the surface... or even kamikaze-crash the sphere itself! just PIS here ;)

You forget that the Borg's goal is assimilation. They only destroy those that try to resist assimilation too much.

the others were just in the shop to have their transwarp coils rotated?
@joeridestrijcker4457 жыл бұрын
that raises the question why they want Earth in the first place; they know about terran tech and terran people (the Hansens, Picard/Enterprise, other colonies) so they should have an idea about the tech level... in all of their encounters they must have realised that terran tech is relatively weak and they have nothing 'new' to be assimilated; so, going to Earth is a grudge match? If one cube can cruise all the way to sector 001, why bother going to the past and sabotage first contact? I loved the film but never understood why they tried that time travel; also... if the cube hadn't been destroyed at all, would they still have done the 'sphere to the past' thing, or just transported a few 1000 drones to the surface?

Also, I think the Dominion Super Dreadnought would be worth a look... and maybe, just maybe the quasi canon Odyssee class Enterprise-F from the game Star Trek Online? Oh and the one thing that is as big as an entire star system of course! V'Ger from the first Star Trek Movie! I hope one of those makes it into your next video! :D Stay classy!!

The Jem'Hadar attack ship was bigger than that. It is only stated in the episode "The Ship" to be buried in 90 meters deep of rock. That would make the ship at least 100 meters long given how much was still exposed to view. Either way, he covered the 110 meter long Klingon Bird of Prey, so why not a 100 meter attack ship?

That fight could be so onesided lul. Depends on how Star Wars deflectors impact Trek transporters (just beam a bit of Anti-Matter?) and how Trek shields react to Star Wars "turbolasers" (the shields are capable of redirecting most electromagnetic waves with hardly any effort).

Laser have no effect on star trek ships. One ship is enough for the complete empire.
@Starjumper28217 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that is a frequent topic of discussion. Since the weapons fired don't actually act like lasers, many people think it's a translator error from a time long ago and they're actually firing plasma which DOES have an effect on Trek shields. Also the *radiation from a leaking reactor or a star has frequently provided problems for crews all around the galaxy. So it seems certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum once again are not a trivial thing for Trek shields. Of course I doubt anything but the Deathstar can put out a meaningful radiation compared to a star, but still.

The thing about the Bird of Prey from Star Trek VI was that the new cloak that could be fired from was an experimental model. That's why it was commanded by the General himself. Likely no one else in the Klingon military was authorized to fly it. Also, if you can pronounce D'deridex, you can prounce Kang, and just look at Way of the Warrior to hear how Negh'var is pronounced. ^_^ RIP Steve Irwin, he is and will be missed.

At 5:52 the Federation's first encounter with the Borg cube is in TNG episode "Q Who" in an uncharted part of the galaxy. Data said "The nearest starbase is over two years away at maximum warp". Unless the episode is wrong, and if I'm not wrong TNG is parallel to Star Trek Voyager, they are exploring different parts of space at the same time. Picard makes appearances with Catherine jane way, and o Brian makes appearances with both
@AtomicSneeze15 жыл бұрын
In that episode, the Borg cube was a scout ship in the neighboring Beta quadrant which is only a few years away at conventional warp speeds. Q just sent them to the nearest Borg ship. Voyager on the other hand was sent to the Delta quadrant which was 70 years away at conventional warp speeds and is the "Home" territory of the Borg. Picard and O'Brian only make an appearance during the pilot episode of Voyager while Voyager is visiting DS9 for a briefing on the Maquis.
@AtomicSneeze15 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention that the episode that Q introduced the Enterprise to the Borg was just the first time a Federation ship met the Borg and escaped. So this is the first time the info got back to the Federation at large. However, seven of nine's (or Anika Hanson's) parents met the Borg long before. They were just assimilated so they couldn't tell anyone. Also Guinan's people had encountered the Borg back sometime between the 19th century and Kirk's time and many of her people came to live in the Federation so the info was there even if they didn't know it.
@Sammy-iw9en5 жыл бұрын

The Borg Sphere was an attempted assimilation by the Nexus Queen from Unimatrix 01 (Krige's character) of a temporal ship used by the Sphere Builders featured in Enterprise. Story arc was expanded on in novels and video games. The connection was intended to be revealed in later seasons of Enterprise following the Romulan-Earth War planned for seasons 4,5 & 6.
