My father helped build some of the stuff for both the opening and closing ceremonies. He always tells that Rebollo kept shooting more and more and more arrows almost every single day and that by the end he was hitting the inside of the cauldron possibly 5 out of every 6 times even with sun on his face or while the sun was setting Practice, practice, practice and more practice was the key to, if not make it perfectly, at least make it look believable. Actually, in the inauguration ceremony, it seems that he didn't hit the inside of the cauldron. The arrow flied over it and landed in a safe zone outside the stadium, or at least that said the Barcelona newspapers back then. I was just 6 years old, but I remember La Vanguardia covering the news the day after, with footage from a local TV in which you can see the arrow flying over, and debating if the fly-by it was on purpose and the fire lit because of the emanating gasses from the cauldron, or if it was a mistake solved at the moment with a remote lighting. Amazing olympic moment, anyway, I think it might the lighting ceremony with more suspense of the story.

I think it doesn't matter if he missed the target by some inches, the concept has so much poetic, minimalism and Olympic sense (this is what is to be an athlete) that who cares if the arrow secretly felt out, but I don't think so, I have checked the tape many times, and there is nowhere to see the arrow's flame going behind the cauldron... maybe the arrow reported by some newspapers were rehearsal arrows? or maybe the arrow was only meant to fly by the cauldron and the gas and technology would do the rest... I think ancient Greeks would be pleased, there is no technology that can surpass this beautiful concept...

Your right, and i remember them screening another shot from a side camera angle showing the arrow go over the top, it looks like it landed in the centre, but it just went over, which was all that was needed to ignite the gas that would have been turned on previously.

It was not "fake" nor a "fail". Source: I worked for the people that did the engineering of the stunt. The arrow flew EXACTLY through where it was supposed to fly. Seconds before the arrow started flying, the propane gas started flowing, creating a column of unlit gas that the arrow then had to pass through in order to ignite it ...which it did. Since arrows don't fly in a straight line, specially in such long distances, they needed a parabolic trajectory in order for the arrow to SAFELY pass over the stadium's crowd without accidentally landing on anyone; hence why THERE WAS NEVER AN INTENTION TO MAKE THE ARROW HIT THE INSIDE OF THE CAULDRON, at all. If they had wanted the arrow to land INSIDE, then that whole section of stadium seats would've been kept closed down during the ceremony; as there was a double risk of the arrow hitting a person. Why? Because 1) Since arrows fly in a parabola, then the launching would've needed to be way move vertical than what it was, therefore increasing the risk of the arrow hitting someone sitting below the cauldron instead of landing on a locked-down empty backlot behind the stadium, like it did. 2) Even if the arrow had landed inside of the cauldron, it could've easily (and uncontrollably) ricocheted out of it, due to its high momentum and intertia, and then fallen down on the audience. They didn't wanted that kind of liability. Lastly, as someone else said in another comment here, the archer practiced the shot dozens of times during the last few days before the show. He was very consistently hitting the pre-established SAFE flight path; and his arrows kept landing consistently on the safe-zone behind the stadium, as calculated and required. This is basic Physics 101. Had the archer not been able to safely "hit his marks" during the rehearsals with an empty stadium, then the stunt wouldn't had happened at all with an audience; and a Plan-B would've gotten carried out instead ...like "magically" igniting it through the internal piezoelectric spark igniters that all Olympic cauldrons (before and after this one) have always had. Tldr: the arrow was NEVER intended to land inside the cauldron out of concerns for the safety of the people sitting nearby it. The arrow flies in a parabola, through a column of gas, and then lands safely on a locked-down safe zone behind the stadium; as intended by the engineers in charge of the stunt.

Going by your argument that the arrow was only supposed to pass and not penetrate the cauldron and light up the column of propane gas in the vicinity of the cauldron, then the propane cloud should have burst upon contact with flame. But if you stop at 2:23 and advance the video frame by frame you can actually see the flame lighting from the bottom of the cauldron and not burst as should have been the case. Pause at 2:23 and use keys "." and "," on your keyboard to advance and rewind frames at 2:23.

I remember as a young boy watching the lighting in Seoul in 1988 and being amazed at the technological coolness of the way the lit it there. I wondered how they would top that in Barcelona and then when the music changed and the guy was standing there with the bow and arrow, we were all like "No way!" and then he did it. Best olympic lighting moment ever. And sure, there were some beautiful moments and symbolism such as Sydney Beinjing, London and Rio, and some poignant moments such as Ali in Atlanta. But for "wow" factor? Nothing has even come close.

@@Tukkertje That is incorrect. What really happened was that the gas was turned way up so that he didn't have to land it directly into the cauldron. However, he still had to get it over the cauldron, at distance, in the dark, with thousands of other athletes having flickering lights close by. En lo personal creo que éste encendido tiene un mérito sin precedecentes por todo el trabajo previo; además de original, fue estético y quedó en la memoria como referente de Barcelona. El encendido de Pekín carece de valor, el hecho de decir que elevar a un sujeto con un arnés para encender el pebetero es mejor que el uso de la flecha y arco es una respuesta morbosa.

Lacer703, te presento los gases inflamables. ATONTAO (si dejas abierto unos segundos una fuente de gas inflamable al cabo de un rato las cercanías de dicha fuente estarán saturadas de gas y podrás encender un fuego sin necesidad de tocar nada, solo deberías acercar una llama a escasos metros) Como apunte decir que la flecha no tocó el pebetero a proposito (si se quería que aterrizase dentro se tenia que hacer un tiro demasiado peligroso, debido a la parabola que debía hacer la flecha podia acabar entre espectadores y se decidió encender antes el gas para saturar el aire de alrededor del pebetero para así poder lanzar la flecha por encima y encenderlo haciendo que la flecha aterrizase en el parquing que hay detras del estadio).

In the same way that firedancers doing "Samoan Fire Knife" don't burn their feet's soles or themselves when exposed to orange flames for just a few seconds. Since the orange part of the flame is not the hottest part of the torch, you don't get instantly burnt. (When doing the footsoles trick in particular, there's also a thin layer of gas-vapors that protect you from burns (to some extent) too. Your body hair gets charred instantly, but the moisture in your skin protects it for a few seconds. You do feel heat, but don't get burns as quick as if it was a blue flame from a blowtorch.

I wasn't born yet when this happen but wow that guy is great. Shooting that arrow must have been super hard as the cauldron is so high and it was so dark too and yet he shoot it perfectly. Just imagine what would have happened if he made a slight mistake and the burning arrow fell at the people?! Salute to him!! Definitely a great way to open the Olympics.

Fab Rojas la flecha no solo llegó sino qué pasó por encima del pebetero, como estaba planeado... por lo tanto cumplió perfectamente su función, era una ceremonia no una competencia de tiro al blanco.

I remember watching it live. The camera angle over a statue's shoulder, looking down to the archer. The music, thrilling strings. Then the archer pulling back, aiming high, taking a second or two. It all happened in an instant. I barely processed. It was astounding.

Although the arrow passes over it is an incredible shot as it goes straight towards it and passes in the axis falling right behind. Perfect job!

Right! I algo noticed that on a later TV program but the Spanish broadcasting system did a switch on the angle of the view in order to make people thinking the arrow landed into the bowl.

Yeah, I mean, the arrow landing in the bowl would be like the "cherry on top", but in reality the arrow just needed to be accurate enough to ignite it.

FUN FACT: My family's business, that designs flashlights, was asked to design a system to transport the flame from Athens to Barcelona. It was a success and they gifted us one of the torches (or it could have been a replica). It was an honour for my family and their business to be included in this historical moment of unity and peace.

This was the most vivid memory of how olympics should be. Watching this as a child back then reminded me that we can be anything we want to be as long as you focus and put your heart into it. I wanted to become an archer after I watched this but then again there was never an opportunity in the Philippines. So I worked with whatever we have. ;)
