I wrote a professor an unsolicited application to which he replied that he didn't have any positions. after I did an internship with another fellow professor, suddenly the former had an opening for a PhD student lol that's how it works.

This is wonderful information! 🎯 I am "falling" into an opportuning as I finish my MSSE: I've been working on a research team for my capstone semester, and the PI _really_ likes my work (and paper & writings & teamwork) so much that when I asked if I could continue on the team after I graduate, he invited me to become one of his doctoral students. (Of couse this was something I have been giving serious thought to anyway since I research a large part of my day-job as an engineer/architect; and I've wanted to be a scientist since I was little!) AND now the PI has arranged an interview with the head of the research center who would be co-advisor with him. He wants to work with me to streamline my entry into the team in this capacity. Besides all this, I am in my early sixties and working strong as a senior engineer & architect. _Soooo, doctor Stapleton, as I have been preparing for just such an opportunity, your videos have been really helpful!_ 😊💜😊💜😊

"scanning" applications right before meeting applicants is so true lmao

Not only for PhD positions but also internships... as I just learned. I am currently an intern at government ministry and by coincidence the internal messages regarding future applicants was also forwarded to me. In the email, the head of my department asked the secretary to send them also a version if the applicants CV (making it sound like this usually doesn't occur) so that they are able to scan the CV during the interview. I mean, I luckily got internship myself but I am still astonished at how insignificant the application documents appear to be...

The sarcasm is hilarious but sometimes hard to tell from the obvious. Still I got it and prefer it over other methods. Thanks for this content.

Thanks Andrew, I have just finished my M.Phil. and I am applying to various Universities abroad for PhD. I am literally shocked about how the potential supervisors don't bother to look at my previous research experience or my CV and ask the obvious questions on the interview itself. I think they just scan through the application absent mindedly just right before the interview and don't bother going to much depth.

Yes. Probably because they’re so busy. It never stops for them. The demands placed on academics are unending.

So how do did they invite you to the interview? They can't invite everyone

Test scores on GRE, GMAT, TOEFL etc. while some programs are test optional, optional usually means strongly recommended

How would a typical PI rank order the value of these? LoR from PI's former (1) student, (2) advisor, (3) collaborator, or (4) someone PI doesn't know directly but has cited/has been cited in the past. The obvious answer I think would be "it depends", but controlling for all other variables.

Between the various reasons I gave up during my post-docs, it was the fact that at every applications I had to ask these letters and I did not like at all. Repeating the process fro every application. It is awful for everyone.

Why do unis over the world put their highly especialized researchers and professors to do all this administrative work? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to let them research and teach in their fields and hire professional administrators to do the management? It seems highly disfunctional to me. Thanks for the great videos!

Is there a possibility of getting PhD funding if I have a distinction in my masters but only third-class bachelors? I am deeply interested in doing a PhD.
