First of all, I really liked your video, you have great energy and are very enthusiastic. Having said that, I disagree with most of your counter points, especially since you've straw-manned some of my statements on nunchucks, and nearly every other counter argument you make has some very serious flaws in logic. I'm not saying this in malice, like I said I actually really liked your video, especially the parts on blocking and grappling, but I would also love to dismantle the arguments you've proposed here because some of them are really bad and I love enthusiastic debate. Having said all that, I'm mindful of the size of my audience and don't want to inadvertently cause a dogpile or cause you any distress if you're not wanting to engage in a proper back and forth, unless of course your channel or this video grows large enough so that the engagement isn't overly one-sided because then it's fair game. If I were to reply I would not be aggressive to you, I think you're great, but I would be very aggressive to the arguments and logic you've put forth and deconstruct them to the level they deserve. @@Tyanus2 Basic physics. The only time that a nunchuck would probably be more powerful than a stick is if both ends are perfectly parallel to each other during the moment of contact (which would still not guarantee the best kinetic force transfer due to the stop of the "grip" stick), and that rarely happens. To be fair I think most of the disagreement comes from the cultural gap. On one hand we have a martial art accomplice who refers mostly to streetfight and other duels where people are poorly equipped; on the other hand, a medieval Europe enthusiast who speaks battlefield and armoured combat. I think you've made it very clear that in most situations that Shad likes to envision, yes, nunchaku are useless. It won't do much against an armoured opponent, and the speed won't compensate for the lack of power. But as a self-defence or assassin's weapon, it can be pretty damn effective.
@einnutzloserphilosoph Жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the resentment torwards nunchuks stems from a lack of that situational awareness. (Almost) nobody's mad when nunchucks are depicted as effective weapons in MMA-centered media. Nobody gets angry when Bruce Lee uses nunchucks. But then there are fantasy settings with those "awesome", "badass" fighters that take out armored and armed opponents with nunchucks. To the point where it feeds into this urban legend that nunchucks could be actually efficient military-grade weapons. And that is the point where HEMA-centric weapon enthusiasts get annoyed be them.

Maybe because Nu had more followers, and was more respected as an archery authority in the community. All in all- I have no idea why it was different, but I am glad it was. I do not always agree with Shad, but I think he has a spot-on attitude when it comes to having healthy debate- he tries to focus on the arguments, he understands logical fallacies pretty well, and tries to avoid ad hominem attacks (which is saying something when it comes to interactions on the internet). @@austincummins7712 The difference, is that Shad raged against Nu-Sensei. During the height of the (racial) harassment across all platforms, he posted a video, "Nu-Sensei: Idiot, or Troll?" Whereas, in this case, Shad specifically encouraged his friends to be nice to the small youtuber to avoid the reputation for bullying he's had.... Of course, this is also in the video where he makes disgusting sexual jokes, picking on the smallest youtuber that responded for an hour and a half, focusing ONLY on him as the preferred strawman. So I agree Shad understands argument pretty well, and knows what fallacies... using them to his advantage. If a critic isn't extremely mild in their critique, accepting the majority of Shady's points, he accuses them critics of strawmanning, that they maliciously twisted what he said, while simultaneously using the most blatant lies imaginable. He claimed Nu called "Shad's" draw impossible, showing evidence... but if you read the rest of the sentence, after the highlighted part, Nu clarifies it is in no way impossible. The same was done to one of the Historians Shady attacked, when the guy actually said in another comment on screen, "I used to draw that way as a kid, so I know it's not impossible." The stick doesn’t have the same intimidation factor, in a modern age where defending yourself has serious legal ramifications the nunchucks are my carry weapon of choice. 90% of the time where I’m in a situation where I need to defend myself the nunchuck has avoided the conflict completely cause after swinging it around for like 5 seconds they don’t wanna get close and stop so the conflict is resolved or you can run away and if I need to I can still finish the conflict cause they are still quite hesitant when approaching and it’s just so much easier to go to town on them then with a stick, a stick is also quite easy to be taken away by a person with any experience and then you’re fucked, thanks to the learning curve of the nunchuck and the fast movement speed I don’t have to worry about that. Almost everyone carries a knife but has never used it in conflict but are not actually prepared to stab someone it’s almost impossible to prepare for it. Most people with a knife are hesitant to ever hurt someone with it since you will most likely end their life or leave them in critical condition with most strikes and if they have a knife themselves you’re gonna be at risk as well.

Grappling with nunchucks can be very effective, clearly this is just one aspect of nunchuck training that you have neglected and it's important because this is how you can defend with nunchucks against long weapons. You have to rush in close and graple the opponent's hand to pull him off balance and follow up with an attack. This is easier if you use two sets of nunchucks but you can still do it with one by following up with a kick first then release your hold and strike with the nunchucks. He's a martial artist that knows how to use them, but he had doubts so he wanted to look at the data, not rely on sound. 7:40 ...you can, also, strike with a baton without any "load up", rest it on your shoulder and you can strike overhead, side, or diagonal 8:26 "...you also get centrigual force" yeah, you also get that with a baton, with anything really, even a bucket of water 8:45 again, you are comparing sound instead of data. Whips work in a different way than nunchucks, whips are thickest at the handle and thinnest at the tip. 10:58 sure but did they didn't compare it with a stick or a baton, no one said u can't break a skull with nunchucks, they apply enough force but again a baton apples more without the chance of hurting your self (and also you don't need training to be able to not hit your self with a baton) 13:06 "...and create an opinion based upon logic" well yeah, i saw Wushu Engineers video that used logic and showed data and that was enough for me, you should watch the video as well if you preach what you say 13:15 "...respect the culture and hmm why did this culture keep this around" As someone who trained Aikido for a few years, made a step back, tried BJJ and saw that the lack of sparing is so detrimental to the martial art...i can say that even tho Aikido is old and tied to a culture with all respect to the Japanese Aikido is mostly bull-crap and isn't a martial art. I will not accept something on the sole merit of it being around for a while, that just isn't a factor in it being actually viable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The only thing that i respect if you fighting for something you love, taking the time to make and edit a video. For a good and fair argument someone has to advocate on the opposite side, if not for videos like yours and other nunchuck fans i'd be somewhat skeptical. I find the comparison to sticks and batons to nunchucks a bit fallacious. They can both exist in a martial artist’s arsenal at the same time. Kobudo teaches staff techniques more than nunchucks. The staff is the “king” of kobudo weapons, as it were. Training with nunchucks will only elevate your baton, knife, or even unarmed skills. It will improve your hand eye coordination, relaxes, stamina, and strength. The same muscles you use to swing and catch nunchucks will be the same muscles you’d use to swing and catch other weapons. I always say that it’s like a very physical rubix cube at first but I am a major proponent to its benefits. At the end of the day they are very effective street fighting weapons as they allow you to conceal your weapon, pull it out and deliver a smashing blow to the face very quickly. Most street fights are determined by how damaging the very first blow is.

even if it doesn't have the practicality or ease of use of something like a baseball bat it's still easy to see why it's so popular. The level of discipline it fosters and just how beautiful it can be in demonstrations are the main draws here in addition to all the wonderful stuff you showcased in this video of course. Martial arts aren't about the most direct and efficient way to take someone down or else every martial artist would just give up and buy a gun.

Baseball bat is much less practical than nunchaku is. It is heavier and way slower and predictable than nunchaku is. Not to mention it is impossible to conceal. You get one predictable swing and as it misses you are open to bazillion counters which will wreck you real bad. Martial arts (judo, karate. taekwondo, wrestling, boxing....) are about most efficient way of fighting. Maximum effect with least effort. At least with using wielder's own body or hand-to-hand weaponry. Sometimes that least effort may mean reverse roundhouse kick to head. Sometimes stepping out of way. Sometimes mulching face with small, symmetrically built flail.

Yeah, did it ever occur that maybe being less lethal than a knife is a bonus for nunchaks? It's a lot easier to explain your use of force to the law when your assailant DIDN'T die... like Shad says, the one situation where the nunchak is advantageous is if you need to HIDE a weapon (and as this guy demonstrates in this video, nunchaks do lend themselves to that quite well). My take is that a nunchak is less likely to kill your opponent while still defending you just as effectively (if not better!). Yes, nunchaks CAN smash brains, but this is a rare occurrence. So can a nunchak deliver a lethal strike? Yes, absolutely! Is it as likely to do so as a knife? No, not even close!

The problem with the "not striking yourself" line is twofold (1) it relies on control and precision. In a fight situation your opponent is not likely to be as nice as a sandbag. As a noob when it comes to melee weapons I would pick up a stick/staff/club any day over nunchucks. Not because I think nunchucks are bad, but rather because despite being a noob, I'd still be able to fight somewhat efficient with a stick/staff/club. I could use brute force when fighting with these weapons which is most likely what I would resort to anyway if I couldn't run away and had to fight for my life. Even if I know about some nunchucks tricks, how to hold it and perform jabs, I wouldn't be able to utilize that in a real life fight. Nunchucks got a steep skill curve and anyone who thinks it would be better than a simple stick in a real fight is mistaken, unless if you're a nunchucks super-user/expert/master. As said, I don't think nunchucks are bad. I think they are scary af in the hands of an expert.

Well, originally, the nunchaku was developed by the Okinawans, to fight against the Chinese and Japanese who repeatedly invaded the island. It was so effective in their guerrilla warfare against the Chinese/Japanese, who of course had spears and swords, that the nunchaku was adopted by BOTH cultures. It's so effective for that role, that criminals today still use it for their own form of guerrilla warfare. So, yeah, there are definitely times and places it's a great choice.

@@vanivanov9571 That is actually seen as a romantization of the nunchuck, since it usually was the nobility/aristocracy that would fight off invaders in Okinawa. Another possibility is that is was actually used as some kind of warning alarm by guards, banging the two halves against eachother. @@vanivanov9571 *I put that in the same category as the people who thought the Hittite Empire didn't exist, or the ones who doubted the Gauls performed human sacrifice.* For the Hittite we have archeological evidence, comparing the existence of an entire empire to the existence a few rebellions/invasions to proof a weapon origin story is ridiculous. As for the humand sacrifices, we actually might have never known about these without outside writing sources like from the Romans and Greeks. There are many romanticized stories about many things in history, the nunchucks most definitely can fall under this unless you have clear historical evidence it wasn't. *It would be utterly ridiculous if the nobles fought on their own, without peasants to support them....* Actually that is exactly how it often was done, ofcourse you need to take the "nobility" wider including retainers that were higher ranked than peasants (something like very low nobility without much wealth and/or land). Ofcourse they could have used peasants to support them logistically (in fact they almost certainly did), but not really during battle. And even if peasants fought during battles, they'd be giving some better battlefield weapons like spears, etc. Even if can argue nunchucks are a good/acceptable selfdefence weapon, arguing it might be a good battlefield weapon is most definitely absurd. *I learnt the history from my college instructor, who teaches cultural history.* This doesn't say much, a college instructor can say anything, especially if he himself truly believes that history to be correct, this doesn't mean it isn't. Was you college instructor an expert historian that actually delved into the history of the nunchucks? Or did he just like you heard it from his own teacher/someone else. Like I said, it is certainly possible peasants used it to defend themselves because it was on hand and because they thaught it was a good weapon (afterall peasant really didn't know much about weapons or warfare at the time, considering even today intimidation is still seen as one of the best points of nunchucks, they possibly might have had a similar feeling, valueing the nunchucks more as a weapon than it deserves), or maybe it was something that they just could carry with them without suspicion. This doesn't take away that a logical and non biased assessment of the nunchucks actually shows it is not a good weapon compared to other weapons.

Since there is no solid connection between your arm and the striking side of the nunchaku, it seems like the most energy you’re going to be able apply is based on the mass (weight) of the striking side multiplied by the speed squared. If these do damage, it looks like most of the effectiveness comes from high speed and surprise. Compare this to using a direct connection between your muscles and the end of a stick, where all the force can be directly transferred.

Huh? Short sticks (eskrima sticks) is one of the main weapons I was taught in kobudo. One quick look at my Instagram would tell you this but clearly you're too busy agreeing with throwing a cultural and ancient weapon on the ground and calling it garbage. Time is not necessarily the issue, though it is a factor, the main point is that in order to have such a bad experience with the weapon, either one has to have a bad teacher or try something reckless. To an ordinary person yes a stick does offer more advantages, but if you actually use your 'economics' skills and listen, I said to a Martial Artist who is trained, it offers faster, very powerful attacks, concealment, and unpredictability. I disagree with the ineffectiveness of grapple or hold with nunchucks. The reason is that you are not relying completely on the weapon, but a combination of skills. Hold an arm and land an ox jaw half a second after. Elbow to the sternum, outward sweep of a foot, head butt... it depends on the situation. But a grapple and momentary disabling of a limb can make a difference. Just my tow cents.

I watched Milani Fitness's video, and I will say that he did not use the appeal to authority fallacy, an appeal to authority would be saying Nunchucks are not a garbage weapon, I trained with them for years, and leave it at that. Milani Fitness, made his points clear and even demonstrated them. His argument seems to be that with practice, the Nunchucks are a lethal and deadly weapon. He made a very good argument. I can see both sides of this, but I would say Milani won this argument, for specific uses and with training the Nunchucks are very much not garbage.
@Jon-ov4nc3 жыл бұрын
In fairness you're example isnt an appeal to authority fallacy, it's an anecdotal fallacy. To be more specific the appeal to authority fallacy only applies in limited circumstances, it's not meant to apply to scientists or people who are experts or highly experienced in their field Also accusing someone of making fallacies in their arguement as a way to discredit their arguement is the fallacy fallacy, just because a point may have been poorly argued or even fallacious does not mean the conclusions are wrong In debating it's difficult not to make fallacies and you just need to let them go (except for ad hominems), Shad made many too but at least Milani critiqued the arguments rather than just point out Shad's own fallacies

@@Jon-ov4nc In what specific circumstances does appeal to authority apply? if the logic of an argument is not sound if no other evidence is provided other than "I'm an expert" I would call that falious bs. @Matt-yp6ez3 жыл бұрын
@@Jon-ov4nc I see how the example I used could be viewed as an anecdotal fallacy, but I was trying to establish authority with the "trained with them for years". An anecdotal fallacy is using an example that applies in one situation but is not the norm, and using that one example to provide a basis for an argument. For example, I drove to work while texting and did not wreck, therefore texting while driving is safe. The example I provided though poorly worded would still be an appeal to authority, along with the examples you provide. A makes claim B; there is something positive about A, therefore claim B is true.

@@Jon-ov4nc although you were right about the fallacy fallacy, but pointing out a fallacy where there is none should be a fallacy as well. I've Japanese-American, and I learned how to use the nunchaku when I was stationed in Okinawa at Camp Hansen, Okinawa. The nunchaku is fun to use for exercise and also to use for kobu-jutsu (weapons art) kata in martial arts tournaments. However, the nunchaku is not a good self-defense weapon because there are far better weapons which allows you to strike an attacker while being out of range for a counter-attack. This, of course, includes a firearm. It also includes an improvised weapon, like a mop handle. A nunchaku is better than no weapon at all. However, if you have the opportunity to choose a self-defense weapon, it is far more reasonable to use a weapon with longer extension, which includes a bariatric cane, which is legal to walk in public with. It also includes law enforcement-grade pepper spray, which also has its disadvantages. For instance, after spraying someone with law enforcement-grade pepper spray, you are still supposed to orbit away from your attacker so your attacker doesn't charge you where he last saw you and ground and pound you.

Hope you have a damn good day too, sir! Reposting a comment I made on Shad's reply to this video: I think nunchucks need to be understood in their proper context. From what information I've found (and I have not done exhaustive research, so I may be talking out of my behind), nunchucks should not be classed as weapons. They are *improvised* weapons. They are farming implements that were pressed into service as weapons. This is where their history as rice flails and the argument as regards concealability really make sense. They're something a farmer might easily have to hand or be actively using when men of ill intent sauntered up to his home. You're a farmer carrying a farming tool, no surprise there. What *is* a surprise is that you know how to use this tool as a weapon with relative effectiveness ("effectiveness" here defined as "better than nothing"). Within that context, sure, nunchucks could be surprisingly effective and deadly improvised weapons. They are still *improvised* weapons. I feel I should point out that I would not consider Shad's stick here an improvised weapon. A simple weapon, yes, but it was deliberately engineered to be of maximum utility at hitting people, and has no other real function. It's not long enough to be a proper walking stick relative to Shad's height, it isn't really useful as any other manner of common tool, it is made to hit people. It is a whacky stick. It is a weapon. So it really shouldn't come as a surprise that it outperforms an improvised weapon. I think "stick," I think "stick you might find on the ground." Never straight, rarely thick or robust enough to deliver solid impact force to an attacker. Shad's stick had to be crafted, just like nunchucks, taking a usable piece of wood and removing unwanted mass to make a straight, long, thick wooden stick. No stick I've encountered just laying around would perform so well without some minimal carpentry applied to it. For a modern day equivalent: You're raking your yard. Bad people come intent on violence. You have your rake. Is that an effective improvised weapon? Certainly. Does it have flaws that make it improvised? Yes. There's that flimsy metal or plastic fan that inhibits mobility and isn't particularly useful for striking, for starters. But if you have to defend yourself and it's rake or bare hands, is rake better? Unless you're an expert in unarmed combat and are reasonably sure your opponents aren't (and also aren't experts in whatever dedicated weapons they have), then yes, rake is better. Same logic, I think, applies to nunchucks. Though I say again, I have done nothing resembling exhaustive research on the topic, so I may have no idea what I'm talking about. But. . . anyone else think we need Kyle Hill to chime in on this, specifically about centripetal/centrifugal force, and how it applies to nunchucks specifically, and flails, both agrarian and martial, in general?
@highlightermarca-texto32813 жыл бұрын
Making this comment more for the algorithm than anything. I like how you went over the advantages and disadvantages, the Nunchuck does indeed have a speed advantage over other blunt weapons. However, I still find them impractical, because of the training required. I'd rather practice with a more intuitive weapon that is more readily available, like a stick. Seems like a more productive use of my time, if my goal is self-defense. If the goal is artistic flare and looking cool, Nunchucks are a great pick. Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with admitting certain aspects of Martial Arts are more "Arts" than "Martial"

Next time you are in your garage wrap the chain around your wrist or forearm, hold one end with your body and gradually apply pressure with the other and you will experience the debilitating pain at some point without having to use much force. With a shorter cord you don’t have to wrap all you have to do is drape them over a limb and move the ends together so imagine what would happen with intention. I say this to you not to be any kind of way but to be a brother and hopefully encourage you to explore more options with the weapon I implore you to look at this with an open mind.
