It works for ants because their locomotion happens in 2 mechanical steps. Inflated, or deflated. They use hydraulics, and moving fluid around is something fungus has been doing for more than a billion years. The fungus moves fluid to inflate or deflate the chambers that control ant motion and because much of ant locomotion is a chain reaction of several chambers in succession following a single pump cycle, this process is fairly simple. Ants don't really need to "think" too much about how their legs work, so it wouldn't make sense for a fungi to hijack it's brain for anything other than sensory data like smells.

The fungus intruding on the networks, making it move simply by triggering the nerves sounds way more realistic than controlling it. They accidentally control the nerves, and maybe it's the host's choice to die somewhere isolated and open, as it's unaware of what the fungus would do after its death. Maybe it's the host's programming for when it knows it's dying in such a way instead of the fungi. The cordyceps would probably infect whatever tissue is open and weak on our bodies also, but since we're so much bigger and have many more things to fight it off it couldn't do much damage to our nerves and network, and cause us as much pain as the pain it does cause the bugs that get infected. If it did infect us like it did the bugs, we wouldn't climb the highest building for it to sprout. We would probably be isolated in a room. Trying to treat it or to have it contained. It just really seems that the bug hosts seem like that's an appropriate way to die since they only know they're deaths are coming but not aware of what's causing it or how. Since they don't learn from this it would be an endless cycle.

No the Cordyceps is actually intentionally doing that it has a mind of it's own... they control the insect's body forcing them to climb in higher places because they want something that is a very windy and airy place so that the spores can spread all over the environment in large distance.
