All that really matters is that you are happy with what you bought... I was simply suggesting spending a considerable amount more money and not only do you have a head turner like you mentioned... you have a Corvette that still has respectable power and engine durability in spades... the world records still stand for a "production car" that holds the 24 hour endurance record... imagine driving from LA to NY and back to Detroit in 24 hours... over 4200 miles averaging over 175 mph with a stock engine pulled off the assembly line for a cosmetic blemish and then installed in a purposely prepped 1990 ZR-1... That means you can drive a legendary Corvette for a fraction of what they cost new back in the 90s. With over 350,000 C4s built in 13 years it shouldn't be hard to find one that works for you without spending a small fortune.

@13Scorpio
@13Scorpio 4 жыл бұрын
My 95 C4 had that column problem. Not as bad, but, it was loose. The tilt gets jacked up because people tend to use the steering wheel as a handle to support them as they get in and out of the car. NEVER do that. Luckily, mine could get repaired, that looks like it needs a whole new column...

my first car was an 85 corvette, i bought it for 3 grand. thankfully i dodged the vats key (84 and 85 didnt have it) everything worked on it except the wipers power locks power seats cruise control etc. the weatherstripping was shot so it leaked in the rain, surprisingly the lcd dash worked just fine. mines an automatic as i didnt know how to drive stick back then and i will say an auto in a c4 is dangerous. it would drop a gear or two in the corners and kick the rear end out. oh and the brakes barely worked and i even rear ended someone because of it. 10/10 would buy again

I had one when I was 18. Got it for about 2k. 70k miles 4speef stick and everything worked. Eventually after a year of dailying it, it started having major issues and I had to sell it. I’ve had my 1990 since 2004. I just put the steering column back together after fixing the wobble. I have a small oil leak in the oil pressure sending unit and I have an intermittent short in the coolant temperature sending unit. It is the most reliable car I have ever owned. The Southern California sun was not been kind to the paint on both bumpers so it could use a touch up. I have no regrets and no plans to sell it.

I feel your pain! I just bought an 84 vette from the junkyard. I couldn't let it go to the crusher. I paid 1200 which was alot considering the car was locked, no keys, flat tire, and I wasn't even sure if it even ran or had a transmission cuz its so low to the ground. Took about 10 mins to slim jim it. luckily no vats system so I ran to the parts store and installed a new ignition for cheap on site. Luckily it ran, but turns out it only drives in reverse. no forward gears atm. One upside is the previous owner installed aluminum trickflow heads and intake manifold. not sure why some1 would do that on the old cross fire system but hey, better for me! Over 200k on the counter, yikes!

Actually there are some C4's that will run you even more depending on the mileage and condition. My '96 with 63k and near new condition is around 15k book value but I would not take that for it as I spent two years looking for one with the exact options of Torch Red/ red with a 6-speed manual and the LT4 package was just an added bonus. It came with a book with papers and the original window sticker that had 41k as the MSRP which in today's money is around 55k so basically I got a 55k car for 15k and I did not hesitate to jump on it when I found it. After a little research I have deduced with some degree of guessing on attrition numbers that there are probably less than a hundred cars just like mine in existence with the mileage and condition it is in. I get compliments whenever I drive it. If you know what you want just be patient till you find it which is made easier these days with the internet.

Hilarious! I bought an affordable 1990 ZR-1, and yea it's all true. In my cars defence it sat unloved for many years. It has 74k miles and fortunately the engine, trans, rear end are all good, but seats, carpet, weatherstripping, paint are on the list, when done I will have about half of what a nice Z is selling for now. It's a cool car, but the LT5, is rare, and expensive to fix. I'm a mechanic so I can do all my own work, saves me money, but this thing ain't no joke to work on. The good stuff, it's all here, nothing butchered, engine runs great, good clutch, trans, and rear end. And unlike the L98, this car is very fast, still holds the world endurance speed record at just under 175 mph for 24 hours straight. You did a great job in your video, I love it, and yea it's a bitch to get in and out of. Great job. 👍👍🏁🏁 I needed this today. I just wanted to clarify, I'm not bashing the L98, if ya do some research you will find it holds many of its own records. The C4 was so badass it was outlawed from sports car racing. The corvette challenge was created so they could race. The C4 was/is light years ahead of the C3, and in reality began the March to the C7, the C5 is all that was good about the C4 and much of its problems resolved. In 1982 the corvette was at a crossroads, the C4 brought it back to super car status. Both the L98 and ZR-1 are often overlooked, but that's OK because it makes them affordable, and with a few tweaks can still hold its own.

If you want most of the ZR1 performance, but with a much more amenable engine to work on, you might be inclined toward the LT4. The final version of the LT1, the LT4 had 330 HP, and came only in MT cars from 1996. Many people suggest that the LT4 might have had more like 340-345 horsepower, and been. Under-rated to not crowd the LS1. At any rate, you can get all the best factory performance parts of the C4 (ZR1 brakes were standard for the whole lineup for the last few years, Z51 suspension was independent of specific model purchased), but not have nearly as difficult a time with parts on the pushrod LT4 as the specialty LT5 will have...

The loose steering wheel / column is from people pulling on the wheel to get in and out. Not a good idea. I'm 6'3" , and over 300 lbs (325 to 330 lbs) and I found that sitting on the sill of my '96 C4, lean back, and drop into the seat works good for getting into my car, and do the reverse to get out . Put a foot outside outside, slide up onto the sill, swing out your right leg, turn 90 degrees, and stand up. Works awesome, and doesn't damage your car. The 1992 thru 1996 C4's are the ones to holdout for. 300 horsepower in a 3,100 lb car is a fun canyon rocket. Anyone out there with any C4s, maintain it. They are great cars and deserve to be taken care of. C4s had so many engineering innovations, that there ended up being more C4's at the Corvette Museum than any other generation. They are great investments, and now is the time to buy them before more people realize what great cars they are and buy them up. Have a great Summer ... :)

I had a1987 C4 Corvette that would blow the doors off of 5.0 Mustangs. And you are comparing your wife's F-150 to a C4 Corvette? Hmm!

Thats funny cause both the '87 5.0 Mustang GT/LX & the 5.7 IROC (which had the same Vette motor in it) both ran better 1/4 mile times (along with the Grand National) than the '87 Vette. The only thing it won was top end by 7 mph & the skidpad #'s. I've owned them all 😄

My C4 is between $25k- $30k In immaculate condition, definitely love it. A few issues here and there, but that C4 was just abused bad. Plus they do have traction control, that one is just jacked up lol. Exactly why it was so cheap.

I once looked at a 1986 Corvette that had been in storage for about twelve years at the time. It made that white one look identical to the mint example right next to it. If it was on the car, it needed work done to it. I left pretty quickly

Just checked my classifieds. We don't have any of the cheapo C4's (Least not cheap C4's with manual transmissions), just the mint ones. After watching this video, I'm glad I got my 350z in the end. But these cars are nice in their own rights.

My C4 ran a 1.93 second 60 foot time. In perspective my friends Challenger RT ran a 2.2 second 60 foot time. You need GREAT tires for a blazing 60 foot or 0-60 time!

I can tell you what happened to that steering wheel. I know because I did it to my '88 firebird. Using the steering as a handhold to get out of the vehicle. Over time it will damage the tilt steering. I let mine go till it eventually completely broke out on the road while I was making a turn. Lesson learned the hard way to never use the steering wheel to exit the vehicle.

While many hate on the C4 it's still an iconic American sports car that was way ahead of its time. For all the things people complain about I find they all disappear once the engine fires up and I head out on the road. I can't put a price on how much enjoyment that car has given me over the years.

Gezz Man You really nail it. I know three years ago. But hey, I own a 90 and being an old car guy, I wasn't surprised by the stuff I had to fix or replace. Mine is now working like it should. Your so right about not being a first-time car and as with any old car when the hood goes up. The wallet comes out. When you get good at running parts down. You better get a manual or two, just for more fun. But even if it was a Honda. Tires, Brakes all the filters and fluids, just to be safe at the very least. The white vett you pick up would have given me pause. Just way too much going on. You're a brave soul. Stay safe Sir, and hope you get some miles with a smile when Crusen around!

Lol This video is eerily similar to my experience with my 88 C4. I’d say the white one in this video is a 3 on the 10 scale. Mine was maybe a 5 with half the mileage of this one. The sad thing is I paid 8900 for mine in 2012. The 35th Anniversary sucked me in. I never was able to get it right. The thing probably overheated 3-4 times. The first time it warped the motor. 3600 rebuild. The second time I replaced the radiator and the fans. The 3rd time replaces the hoses. The 4th time it blew another head gasket. That doesn’t even take into account the head gaskets and stuff. I never got to restore the digital dash or my beat up seats. Never got to do anything I wanted to it. I ended up selling it with a blown head gasket for 2700.00 last year. It was also my daily which sucks. Part of me still wants a c4. If I had a daily and could spend 10-12k on a good one. I’d maybe do it. But my story is when c4 ownership is a nightmare. Rule 1: Have a daily, then the c4 can sit which trust me it will be sitting lol. Rule 2: if for some reason it is your daily. Have 2-4K always set aside for the unforeseen if you can’t wrench. Rule 3: Buy the newest you can get. As much as I love the torque and look of the late 80s L98, the motor overheats all the time. I don’t think an LT1 or LT4 had such issues.

I've owned an 89 and a 93, both had low miles and were in nice shape. That said, they both had annoying issues, the 89 much more so than the 93. I second the recommendation of spending a bit more on a "driver" C5 as it's a better car in every way or at the very least get a later LT1 C4. In other words, buy the nicest car your budget will allow.

I own a C3 but really like the C4...it would be the latest corvette I'd own as the C5 started the euroweenee transaxle. also, if you buy a $2000 *anything*, its gonna be crap...but the C4 does have the unfortunate rep as the skank car of choice...used to be the C3 but that finally turned the corner. but a sorted C4 is a thing to behold
