I remember seeing “I have a problem real live video on KZbin” a few days after it was released. At the time I was drinking just to feel numb as I just couldn’t stand who I was. Thankfully that song helped me click that I had an issue. It’s so good to see Caleb finally come out of top after following them for years. Long may they reign.

Almost 7 months off of alcohol. I really enjoy listening to other people’s “quitting” stories. It’s like it’s own high. The community that is built around this struggle is so strong and creative. Love to see it.

I just love how real of a person Caleb is. How he talks about his insecurities and his journey to sobriety. His humbleness and ability to bare his soul really shines through in his music and really inspirers me to seek my own journey to sobriety and physical fitness. It comes to a point where you wake up and say to yourself I feel like crap and look it. Time for a change. Thank you Caleb for being the example I never knew I needed.

It’s crazy that Caleb can write ‘aggressively positive’ tracks like Sunshine and Riptide, and Johnny has been doing the same thing with Bilmuri for years. Two ex-Attack Attack guys who have really figured it out and know how to write absolute belters

"Aggressively positive" is definitely my favorite genre of music making. Bloodywood is another band I really enjoy for having positive messages with a heavy sound. Always loved Beartooth, really happy to see Caleb getting healthier, and that him getting healthier seems to only be improving his music.

@the_last_dart_bender 2 жыл бұрын
Hey do you have any bands or albums you find have similar positivity? Either heavy metalcore-ish, or more chill punk-ish like AJJ?
@JennaBrownMedia
@JennaBrownMedia 2 жыл бұрын
@@the_last_dart_bender I guess my definition of aggressively positive is simply that it's not aggressively depressing, so there's still an element of "wrongness" in the lyrical content, but there's also a heavy element of hope or empowerment to change, rather than believing that things will never improve. I like While She Sleeps for their punk spirit, like a heavy version of Bad Religion. Motionless in White has also gone positive/empowering more heavily lately. Dance Gavin Dance has some pretty sick riffs and screams while the content is story-like per their prog influences. I like your choice of AJR, so you might be interested in another style that's recently become more popular and started infusing other genres: synthwave (Waveshaper, Dance With The Dead, Carpenter Brut). Chromeo is synth funk, their lyrics have fairly typical pop content, but also a heavy dose of humor, and they are masters of the vocoder.

Im just shy of 2 years sober now and I had read a long time ago that Caleb had gotten sober (I possibly just inferred it from their music) and he had actually been one of many inspirations so it was actually kind of a shock to hear he just recently quit for good. Happy for him I tried Harm reduction for a long time but some people are just better off without alcohol.

I never liked Attack Attack! but Beartooth is one of my favourite bands. I've been listening to them a lot more than usual lately, and even started playing some Beartooth songs (I don't often play covers). I've been sober for about four months and music is a big part of that (also, Finn's stories and insight into life were very helpful). I'm glad this interview happened.

Caleb’s music has just been such a big part of my life. Ever since before Attack Attack got signed to Rise. Then when Beartooth came out I couldn’t relate to any music more. I have several memories of listening to their songs for the first time and just breaking down crying because I related so much to what he was saying. I always chalked it up to being close in age to Caleb. I think anyone who was born in the early 90’s who listens to Beartooth would agree that we all went through very similar stuff at the same time as Caleb. And it’s still going. It’s so cool to experience and move through life at the same time as someone who can write such good songs.

The in between was one of the songs I listened to while getting sober off of hard drugs. The lyrics just hit right at the time and the concept of looking at yourself from above was exactly what I was going through at that time. Thank you Caleb for rad music with amazing/emotionally honest lyrics. Thank you Finn for the interview. ❤️

I'm more of a deatchcore heavy metalcore guy, but Beartooth has been one of my favorites since they came out. A very detailed monologue I didn't know I needed! Thank you Finn. Although I would argue about Disease being "the least favourite" album. For me Disease album is #2 after Disgusting, at least because sound-wise it was the best. Hearing Skin from Below, Rick Beato criticised Beartooth for guitar quality and being unable to distinguish between chords, which he blames many modern bands for such mixing, where guitars get buried down in the mix. So at least music wise it deserves more attention And also the song Clever from Disease... It really feels like its my personal issue. This album is underrated.

Disgusting captured the youth at the times real angst in a real way, The roots from the actual music are proper and clean for 2014 warped tour kids yet we dig so deep in that album because we all related to Caleb’s message, and the music was refreshing but simple. I think that’s what makes bilmuri and besrtooth so successful now in a post warped tour era. Kids that grew up in that warped tour scene as it died cling to this stuff because it’s so incredibly authentic that you connect with it still in the way you did 10 years ago as a 14 year old

I hope he sticks to it if that's what makes him happy. Having gone through similar experiences myself, there's a tendency to feel like you're on top of the world after you get sober, and eventually that feeling kind of wears off, and you start to think "I thought being sober would make me happier and I don't feel any different," and then you go back to doing the same shit. I've personally been through that cycle a few times. But it sounds like what made him change was a fundamental mindset, which is what you need.

Basically everyone I hear talking about it online kinda hates living in LA and the only reason they do it is because that's where a lot of other creators in their space live. A lot of them say it's a great place to visit but living there sucks.

I find it so strange coming from Caleb. Disgusting has so much to do with alcoholism and abuse. Personally, it was an album that really helped me vent my feelings about the alcohol-influenced abuse I was facing from parents and friends. I assumed Caleb was a hardcore straightedger after what he'd experienced in Attack Attack to begin with. I guess not. Either way, super interesting and happy to hear. I've had Riptide on repeat for the last week and super excited to hear more.
