Life in Russia in 2025 is completely different to what it used to be for me. In this video we are sharing real life in Russia right now.
Traveling to Russia in the past was always the highlight of my year, because I could spend time with my beloved Gran. But in 2025, this has now changed, and returning to Russia for the first time since then was always going to be difficult.
Join us as we travel around & explore Kemerovo in Siberia and check out the changes in the city.
I'm still trying to work out how I feel about being in this region of Russia right now and the reality of losing my Gran. Everything in life feels different these days, but especially being here in my hometown. Welcome to Kemerovo.

85-year-old guy here: Beautiful to see Julia with her grandmother snuggled near each other, and the melancholy scene with Julia and Matt in the empty apartment. Take it from me - it feels less sad to be just thankful for the times we’ve been given. I have 40,000 photos from all my life (and some from family earlier) that through the years with a computer I’ve taken the time to organize. Now it a real blessing to review them as my life slows down. Question: Would I be able to see responses from my comments somehow? It would feel more like I’m sharing with someone. Thanks, Ralph

God bless you, Ralph. I have twenty-five thousand pics and digitized maybe a thousand of the old 35 mm ones. They give immense pleasure, especially the slides from fifty years ago. I am glad for every one that isn’t lost to time. There is nothing sadder than an empty house that used to be your home. You bring to mind a quotation I hold to when the urge to cry hits: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

Most Russians consider that the war with Ukraine has been made unavoidable by USA and EU. It's nice to read that you wish Russians all the best but in reality you support US governments that have been harming Russia on purpose from 1945 onwards.

Julia, sorry you had to go through such pain. Running away from pain and going into denial is the worst thing to do. I did that when my dad got cancer and passed away. I went into denial and several years later it caught up to me and made things pretty bad. It took me being away from my family, alone for almost 2 months to clear my head, cope and bring closure. I hope you will find your closure.

@@UnbelievableEricthegiraffe well,I don't watch any mainstream from any country these days(I speak 6-7 languages including Russian, and I have lived in several countries).I don't get my info from mainstream. But my impression from brief clips on internet from both Russia and the West is that Russian media is quite precise and truthful(to reality) and all Western media is just some parallel reality having very little to do with true state of things.Ppl like Tucker Carlson who want to do real objective journalism, get thrown out and are pressed to survive on their own(and boy he does it!).I find ppl with comments like you are normally monolingual Westerners mostly, who don't really have a clue about reality on the ground outside of their own bubble, created by your propaganda. Its quite annoying actually. And it's even more annoying your superiority tone,,like you have a fckin clue what you are talking about...😏

I left Germany and my home 1984 ,I left my parents, grandma, 8 siblings behind and moved to Melbourne. I came back 16 years later in January 2000 because my dad was dying. I saw everyone, grandma was now 95 but alive. My siblings were mostly married and had children. I didn't fit in anymore, they moved on and I didn't had enough time to catch up. They didn't knew my husband and my son , only my daughter, she was in Germany October 1999. She met my dad as well. Then in November 2000 my grandma past , 10 months after her only child. ( my dad) . Mum followed 6 years later and the house got sold and the family were falling apart. Then in October 2018 our youngest sibling died unexpected and it brought us back together. However, nothing can be reversed you have to move on otherwise it will hurt to much. ❤❤❤

We live in the very last days of this system of things. Ahead of the reign of the kingdom of God, under the leadership of Jesus Christ. This is a heavenly government from the king of Christ and 144,000 elect from the earth, will again restore paradise on earth. Then there will be no evil. People will be perfect and will not get sick, grow old and die. In addition, billions of people, all eras and peoples who died in ignorance of the plans of Jehovah God will resurrect to life. Everyone will be given knowledge, thanks to which, they will extend their life forever. I have the same hope for God as theirs - the hope that there will be a resurrection of righteous and unrighteous. (Acts 24:15) In their basis - hope for eternal life, the one that in ancient times promised a god who cannot lie. (Titus 1: 2) In the days of those kings, the god of heaven will establish the kingdom, which will never be destroyed or transferred to another people. This kingdom will destroy all those kingdoms and put the end to them, and only it will exist forever, (Daniel 2:44) While there is some time, study the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses

Why would you want to run away from what made (indeed still makes) you beautiful? You are a traveller. You're curious. You see the beauty in others and as you get older, you'll see the beauty in yourself. Coming home reinforces that. I am a lot older than you. I have been travelling since I was young and I recall asking the same questions as you are now and those who were older than me were saying what I'm telling you today. Watched a few of your videos and really liked and enjoyed them so decided to subscribe. Thank you for sharing your very precious memories of your grandmother. It struck a bell with me and brought some tears to my eyes because I had a very special relationship with my grandmother whom my mum and I lived with until I was 13 when we emigrated to Canada. I did do a bucket trip back to my home 8 years ago and I was able to see my old home. (though not to go in) I understand going back, seeing changes and feeling strange.

The changes were astonishing in a good way because there was a lot of development. I also visited Kazan in Tatarstan for the first time ⏲️ to attend a conference. The place was beautiful and most of all, the people were so warm and welcoming ❤. I truly wish the people of the Russian Federation all the very best 👌🏽 from a South African 🇿🇦

I'm so glad that I happened upon your page. It was emotional for me as well, but also very heartening. My Fiance and I share so many parallels with you, Matt and Julia it's uncanny. I first went to Russia in the early 2000s and have been back five times since. I have been welcomed wholeheartedly into the family as I see you are Matt, it's something I cherish dearly. My Fiance lives in a slightly larger city in the east but I know the feeling of a nose at minus twenty plus. My fiance has been the sole carer for her elderly mother for the last few years which has prevented us from being together and I know she/we will experience the same gut wrenching set of circumstances that you two are facing know. It's comforting and inspiring to see you deal with it all. To see you showing us through the apartment, Dacha and parts of the city was all so familiar for me, also the chemistry between you two, the knowing looks and smiles made my heart yearn even harder. I haven't any doubt that we, as you will prevail, even under the most testing trials and tribulations. I will sign off now, (before I start gushing) and subscribe to this new found gem of a page, I look forward to future videos from you, and wish you both health, happiness and vitality. poka-poka!

Hello from Texas. My father passed recently. When you sat in the apartment and flashing back to the memories, I felt it to my core. It’s crazy how often we are called to sell our home, I get so angry and ask for an outrageous amount. The gentrification is a legit thing. I don’t like it. Hugs from Texas! Btw my best friend is Russian. I’m sending her this video. We actually had significant snow in Houston! The weather has changed. Leaning into pain hit me. My friend said sometimes we have to sit in the uncomfortable.

HELLO PLEASE READ MY COMMENT: I just was sent your channel and I love you guys! What I love the most is that you show me and educate me about your home in Russia. There will always be terrible people who want to say horrible things to you, but just keep being your authentic selves. I am an American who does not like to put down anyone’s homeland, especially through a comment on their channel. I’m sorry people can be so cruel! I WOULD JUST BLOCK THEM! No country is perfect. That’s why we all need to live where we feel the happiest! I look forward to watching many more of your adventures! Love from Sunny California, beautiful beaches, windy, occasionally earthquakes and of course terrible fires. 😩😭 But, I still would never move. ❤️🥰❤️

You are able to come here safely now. Don't bring drugs in your luggage, don't trespass onto government property while filming yourself doing so, don't refuse to co-operate with border control guards if they confront you while visiting a section of the border with a neighboring country - and basically, don't do anything you wouldn't do in the USA. And you'll be fine. But if you do plan to break the law, then don't come at all. There will never be a time when doing so will be 'safe' to do so as an American in Russia, or as anyone else.

27C in the dacha? Yikes. We're at 17 to 21C max in our house in France. Outside temp -5 to +10 at the moment. Sounds toasty warm compared to where you are. Thanks for sharing Matt and Julia. Those pancakes look like wraps... We need to find a definition of a pancake... one filled with onions, mushrooms and potatoes just can't be called a pancake. A crepe is not a pancake. Is the word in Russian "pancake" or something different? Are there "sweet" pancakes, too? Same word? You two are such intrepid travelers... keep on rocking. Love the "frozen" mustache Matt.... go get warm. Bises, hugs and see you later this year!
