I moved to another country after my PhD during Covid too, but I was totally missing UK! So I returned to UK with a new job last year! 🎉🎉

I'm in the military and I have lived there for a couple of years that is Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Saudi. I stay in the United States and I will go back in a heartbeat, the only thing that I can say that I honestly miss is natural greenery. I know you can go to Oman and get it but just to go into a backyard and step on grass in your barefoot or sit under a tree is something that I took for granted living in the US but Dubai is definitely somewhere I can see myself moving too. I currently do government technology and there are positions in the Middle East that I will gladly take when I can

100% feel you on the greenery, you don’t realise what a difference it makes until it’s gone

I think everyone wants to move out of the UK right considering the current the climate. But the reality is, unless you studied a STEM degree, there are not really many companies who are going to sponsor visas when they can just hire a local. So, I think the best thing I’ve learnt from this video is, how important education is. And if you’re like me, and didn’t have the wisdom from parents to push you in that direction, or maybe didn’t push yourself and did a completely useless degree, maybe up skilling is what we need. That paired with a UK passport and accent, is what will allow one to move.

I like this take. That’s interesting your point on STEM degree. What makes you say that? And what field do you want to go in? We’ve had a few webinars on people who have relocated to Dubai across multiple industries, only a small number had studied a STEM degree

@@Lamideelizabeth Primarily from my own experience. I’m quite well travelled and a lot of people who are expats tend to have jobs within these sectors. For example, those who have experience in software engineering or a doctor, essentially skilled workers. I’ve tried to apply for numerous of roles in Dubai, as a EA for example, never gets anywhere and I understand why- because it’s not necessarily perceived as skilled work.

@@Lamideelizabeth Shes right ! I have a degree in business management and im currently studying social work . I have been looking for jobs in the middle east on Linkedin and indeed and its mainly jobs which requires STEM degrees that are willing to sponsor you ! i desperately want to move to Dubai but its making me regret the course im currently studying . Does the middle east take pride in human services ? for example support work (not maid/cleaner jobs) social work , safeguarding adults and children ? early intervention services , housing officer , homelessness team ? I found a US company in dubai that wanted a social worker but only Emiratis . Im stuck :/ but i want to move to Dubai even if its for a short duration. I was considering getting into real estate ( i attended your real estate online webinar btw) but no pay after 6 months ? :/ no thank you ! I need your advise please

Im from the Seychelles Islands and we have the strongest passport in Africa and I never really understood how meaningful that is when I moved to UAE. And getting visas etc. Passport priviledge is such a sad thing 😢

Growing up I always wanted to go into Actuary so it’s nice to hear that on the pod and Sheen is absolutely right - I’d always explain to people what it entails because no one knew what it was, now it’s become more common I think. As always great session ladies 🥰🫶🏾✨
