So glad you let the kids experience trail riding and all that comes along with it. When something minor happened like the crow hops, you don’t freak out, which would, in turn teach the kids to be afraid when anything like that happens. Don't feel bad about the laughing. When there is stress, you have to relieve that stress and sometimes it eases up in a variety of ways - laughing being one of them. When I got married, I guess I was nervous because I laughed during the ceremony. Just prior to the ceremony, the chapel people ask you about everything you want for your ceremony. Well, we were just there to get married and all of those questions was like having to make wedding plans all within five minutes before you go in the chapel to be married. When they asked us if we wanted music, hubby goes, "HUH?" Then he asked how much that cost and then quickly told them that we could live without music. For everything you want during the ceremony, it costs something more. Now who wouldn't laugh after an experience like that. Wedding, all plans made in five minutes before you actually get married. No, I would not exactly advise anyone to do it that way.

Jessica Gray haha, thank you! It really does boil down to the horses. I wasn’t too concerned since the minis are only 30 some inches tall and we’d only be walking and trotting with my husband and I being on really solid horses. My kids are learning how to fall off without it being “scary”. Watching a kid fall off a big horse makes my heart sink, but the little horses are pretty comical in the right situation.

Versatile Horsemanship Funny story, the first and only time I took my son trail riding he was on a rock solid quarter horse mare, but my son had no experience at all. She started trotting and he couldn’t slow her down. They went around a turn and by the time I caught up, she was eating grass and my son was on the ground lol. He had slid off going around the corner. So ever since that I’m so paranoid letting them have control of a horse on their own lol.

Flank cinches really help keep a saddle in place,esp.on barrel shaped ponies without defined withers.Snug up,don't forget the crucial little "keeper" strap between girth and flank cinch,under belly.You can easily add rings,d's for crupper or make up breeching.Nothing like having a saddle that stays in place no matter what. If you can find (or make ) a good pony there's nothing like it for your child.Literally worth their weight in gold.And hard to find.I remember back in 50's - 60's ponies were the BIG thing and some breeders had 100's even thousands.Every color - some fine quality animals.Lots of American Shetlands with beautiful heads and necks.As a 10-11 year old with natural skills I made a fortune starting ponies for a neighbor who bred them and had 100's.I would just wade into the herd pull out 4-5 at a time that were pretty.Blacks,palominos,dapple greys,pintos (funny back then horse people were "generally" prejudiced against them ole indian "ponies" but they liked the spots in the actual ponies.If you decide to pursue something with profit potential in the future there's definitely a opportunity for someone whos children can ride and enjoy riding to either rescue ponies from sale pens and put good solid 6 weeks on them and resale (just gentled ponies average $700 to $1,500) If finished on barrels or something $2,000 to $8,000...AND I used to raise POA's (Reg. Appaloosa ponies of extremely high quality,Pony of America;s) oh my ,they were the most amazing animals,beautiful confirmation,extreme athletic ability and dispositions to die for.ONLY BREED created especially for children AND ONLY BREED that allows children to exhibit stallions! That tells you something about disposition. Most show exhibitors will have 1 pony that jumps,does hunt seat,western pattern,barrels,flag race,poles,cart,trail,That tells you something about versatility. The breed is standardized now but foundations were Arab,(intelligence,stamina,refinement) American Shetland,Appaloosa and Quarter Horse.They're a medium to large pony size mount,with those flashy Appy markings and just a blast to own and breed.You should check them out.

Loved watching this video.. I’ve been a little scared to put my 4yr old back on her pony since she got bucked off. Any suggestions on how to get past that? She’s never bucked before (we got her in April), so we think she got bit or pinch, but I’m so nervous now. At 4yrs she doesn’t understand how to get out of the way & almost got stepped on by the pony..
@VersatileHorsemanship5 жыл бұрын
Rachael Lane that’s a tough one and I can totally understand how you feel. I currently have a couple hundreds kids in my program, I start my riders as young as 2. I do a tremendous amount of quality groundwork with my horses. When the horses have a good handle on the groundwork exercises, I put the kids on and go through the paces. The kids get comfortable with the horses making quick turns, stops, and circles while the horses are getting some quality work. Any child that is remotely timid stays online for a very long time. Even the confident ones are kept online until they “graduate” to the next step. I personally ride all of our horses and ponies except the minis (I’m way too big for them). Keep it very simple and slow with your child and put a ton of quality time into that pony. It will pay off in the end. Best wishes to you!

So would you say a mini is a good idea for kids? I have a HUGE older well broke QH gelding, and a green QH filly. Neither of which I'm comfortable putting kids on. My old gelding is too smart for young kids and the filly is greener'n springtime grass. I'm debating on getting a mini for my 5 and 3 yr old children but I can't decide if it's very wise. I had a QH/pony growing up...my heart broke into a thousand pieces when we had to sell her. I'm probably overthinking a little bit. My daughter is fairly responsible for her age and loves all the animals on our farm... But do I buy a pony we'll outgrow or wait until they're older and able to control the big horses?

Connie Kempf First I’d recommend watching this video because I answer a lot of those questions kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGbCoYujZqt-jdU My first pony was a Shetland. She had been there, done that, and was good natured. She gave me the confidence I needed and was safe. When I outgrew her we had to sell her to buy my next pony who was a little larger and faster (I had a need for speed and barrel racing was my thing). I outgrew him at age 10 and again had to sell to get my next horse, a 4 year old quarter horse that I had for 22 years and who was the foundation of my entire program. My recommendation is getting the kids involved in a reputable lesson program, it will open up so many more options and be much safer for the kids.

Thanks for your reply! I trained my own horses, and did several others for family, and your video helped put into words the thoughts and struggles my mommy brain has been dealing with. On one side there's the thought that they'll just learn the way I did. But on the other hand, there's not a herd of 10 horses lazing out in the pasture for them to spend hours and hours with just hanging out. There is where I learned to recognize simple things like facial expressions and just general horse language. At the time I didn't KNOW that but as an adult, I realize now how useful those hours were. I always told myself I wouldn't buy a horse for my children until they were old enough to work for it, and to convince me they were committed to ALL aspects of caring for one. The filly I have was given to me just recently, but the gelding i slaved for when I was a teenager and it's been over ten yrs since and I love him as much as the day I got him. I want that for my daughters. But I guess I don't know how to go about getting that done, way back in the Ouachita mtns of AR.

My experience was ALL trail rides, only once in an arena. Rented horses by the hour and rode on trails near the stables. I knew nothing, but thought I did.

I was riding my mare along a field when she imagined something in the woods. I learned; first she drops slightly then turns and bolts. This day I wasn't ready and I was suddenly on my back on the ground and she was a speck on the horizon. Another day she spotted a turkey vulture sunning itself in the woods and she was again a quivering bag of jelly at such a horrible sight. Another time riding near a cornfield when the leaves on the corn plants were blowing in the wind she imagined a multitude of monsters about to eat her up. She was a draft cross. The cross was quarter horse. She had great conformation but never took me as her leader. We struggled with that. She was crossed over the rainbow bridge after causing herself a compartment bleed in her hindquarters. I'm not sure how but, she fell bad or landed bad somehow. She was a vindictive horse and I feel a bit dangerous. She dropped me many times. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't hurt worse. I became a frightened rider and I hated that. Nothing worse than doing something that should relax you, but your shaking from adrenaline release.
