Regarding your controversial topic, I feel the same. I've worked in smaller companyies where I was THE ONLY Hispanic in the company and it was uncomfortable (on one, the narrative was that they want to recruit for diversity but there was a supply issue and I was dying inside). Now in a much bigger company with over 6k employees I have found other POC in my immediate team and certainly outside plus a supportive ERG. I feel like I'm in a better position to succeed as a POC here than I ever was before. It also helps to be mostly remote.

Thank you for the insight and transparency! I just transitioned to a startup and feel like it’s a step back in many ways, for similar reasons you mentioned. I like how there is already structure/processes in place and you know what to expect to advance in your career in larger orgs for sure. I’m currently in a tech position, and am wondering where you typically see technical folks (like software engineers) transition to in their career? Is it entirely non-tech and more people oriented or moving up the hierarchy in managerial positions?

I don't work in tech but my former employer was a large hospital system in NYC. The prestige i got from working there was insanely high. Like i practically had a pick of where i want to work after that job. It was great. Am in social services and i never thought i could command the amount of money am getting now. Unfortunately, i got spoil working there and now i hate my employer because it just doesn't measure up lol. Ready sad i had to leave but i wasn't interested in working inpatient so the career paths were limited.

What about the people you get to work with? For me it's very important to have people that you can learn from and that will inspire you, I think a lot of the things I've done have been because I had friends that set an example to me and an environment that was pushing forward and challenging to grow. And also people I could count on and that I could help too. I have interviews with Google again in one week and one day 👀 I really hope it works this time

I don't work in FAANG, but a non tech F50 company, and to add onto the scale and resources of working for such a large company-- there are so many unique roles that only exist at that level. I'm a marketer entering into the 'consumer experience' realm of my company, to which there is an entire team of nearly 100 people designated specifically for. I've worked at other F500 jobs where consumer experience was certainly a thought, but never invested into to such a degree that you can see at some of the even more well known brands like FAANG or f50's. Especially in the marketing world you will find the amount of resources unmatched compared to smaller companies. We have dozens of marketing teams and we work with so many external agencies to develop state-of-the-art campaigns that really lead the marketing world in our respective industries. It's crazy. I was always annoyed they never taught you that in school. They make you believe only very specific jobs exist, especially compared to the types of degrees a certain college might offer in a certain geographical/demographical area. They never tell you what fields you could actually break into if you worked for one of these types of companies. And because some of these types of roles only exist at these large companies, it means your next career advancement is likely going to be with ANOTHER one of these large companies (if you chose to leave your own). It's great self-investment. I also think the rotational job experiences are another amazing perk to working at these companies (again not only at FAANG). But most companies even as f500's will not let employees switch roles just to advance their skill set and learn something new. It is usually only accommodated if you received a promotion or something. My company openly lets employees switch roles every 2-3 years (also potentially increasing in managerial level) so they can truly broaden their skill sets. They actually 'expect you to master your role' in that 2-3 year time period. As a result we've had employee retention easily beyond 10 years. It's a whole new world, honestly. And the flex schedule?! Doesn't even need commenting on lol. For people really invested in their career, it truly is great to work for these types of companies (at least for a while). You have everything you need to actually make a direct impact on your business, and through the business, the world. Not every company can you feel like the whole world is watching you and that your work actually impacts more people than you could ever know.

I strongly recommend implementing your own project ideas, you learn coding best by doing it. And a good software developer does not really much care about syntax or is afraid of it, it should be easy transitioning from one language/framework to another, for this to be true you need to be confident in 1 or 2 languages/frameworks

My son is 16 and has been very interested in working at Google. He says they require degrees to get in. Any ideas or tips on any other way? Thanks a bunch

Google has this 3 week program for high school seniors, called CSSI he should apply! In my opinion, He should definitely get a degree, he’ll have many more options with a CS Degree! Right now he can start self teaching, learning on websites like Udemy!

Thanks Bukola. He will be 17 soon and after watching your videos for a while, I decided to speak with him regarding getting into tech because he used to love to code video games when he was younger. I visited the links you provided which required degrees. I decided since he is still too young, I will enroll him in a summer mentorship program in a Stem school and I will definitely visit Udemy. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge 🙏🙏🤗

@@Bukola1 as far as I know you should do it after to relax your muscles, before a workout one may warm up (which is different from stretching)

Currently in tech through Education. Putting myself on a plan to get into FANG. Google is about 15mins from my new location and it’s literally calling me 😊😊. Saw the building while I was on vacation in Chicago and it’s just hitting me over the head at this point.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion and have your perspective, but I believe that people shouldn't feel intimidated because they're the only man, woman, white or black at a company. Instead you should relate as fellow colleagues of the same field/team. If a company is denying you a salary or a position then obviously regardless of the motivator you should quit, waste of an effort to stay. But I tend to look at personalities above race or sex, they're more indicative.
