When my German Shepherd was a puppy (aka baby velociraptor lol) we would try to make sure we played hard right before we left so a lot of that nervous energy was worked out ahead of time and he was too sleepy to care what you did to him. Not everyone has that kind of time, but even a good 15 minutes before you leave can make a world of difference, especially for working breeds. We also brought a lick mat to distract him, we used yogurt and pumpkin (sometimes peanut butter if I called ahead and asked if anyone on shift had allergies) and it was so worth the effort because he LOVES going to the vet's office, even if they have to draw blood, and he doesn't mind being examined and he was too tired to care about getting his nails clipped. The air tube of death cannot be defeated by playtime and peanut butter though, he has some sort of ancient German Shepherd grudge against it as if a high velocity dryer killed his entire family before his eyes and he's sworn vengeance 🤣
@a.j.nunnaurbiz65354 ай бұрын
I'm sure you already know this, but make sure to check that your peanut butter doesn't contain Xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs. Another name is "birch sugar" or "birch sap."

I grew up with a cockapoo who was an absolute sweetheart, but absolutely hated taking paths in getting clean in any way. As a kid I had a Kerry Blue/Poodle mix that LOVED to be groomed. You would not believe how patiently she sat for her scissor cut (I didn't have any clippers) and how she would jump into the tub, ready to get all fresh and clean. But it didn't stop there; she wanted her nails painted and bows tied on her ears. Then she would strut around, making sure that everyone appreciated how fancy she was. My Mitzi had to be helped to the Rainbow Bridge at age 22, and I'm sure there has never been another dog like her anywhere, ever. I love what you do here!

Reminds me of the ''good ole days'' of self-grooming our dogs when funds were tight. I did not have the grooming tools or the expertise to wash my dog thoroughly, but they smelled good for a few days. As my our schedules got busy, we relented and took them to groomers and often we got good reports about their behavior, until one wanted to bite out of no where. By the way two of ours were cocker/poodle mix and one was a Cocker Spaniel. They have been gone from our home for 25 years...I still miss them and have one full size portrait and several snapshots of them.

We’d pop in every 3-4 weeks just to say hi and she had her first bath at 6 months and her first full groom at a year. She never showed any fear which is in part to her personality and in part to the conditioning that was done. She goes in for a full groom every other month. She’s a favorite at the facility. Just like Cheers, everyone knows her name.

This is probably the best example of a puppy's visit to the groomer. Today I, too, had a 5-month-old puppy, only maltipoo, and with me came a razor, because the owners could not cope with combing. Bathing looked the same, while at the muzzle there were attempts to bite, which, I must admit, ended in scolding( of course, without shouting and spanking), because when he grows up it can end badly. Claws, on the other hand ... oh god, the harm done is incredible. In general, it looked very similar to the video, only with the addition of a razor AND teeth.

Wonder if there's a way to create a wash setup that looks like a deep, dirty street puddle? That way, the dogs happily jump into it and roll around, unknowingly bathing themselves at the same time. And for drying, maybe you could create a simulated car, car window, and scenery, where the dog will happily lean out to catch the wind (which is really a large blow dryer). Maybe you could add a myriad of scents to the "wind" to captivate the pooch?
