On the scorching morning of July 9, 1942, amidst the relentless heat of North Africa, Sergeant Major Aldo Buvoli ascended into the skies aboard the Fiat G.50 Freccia - known as The Arrow - Italy's first venture into monoplane fighter design. From Castel Benito airfield, his solitary mission led him across the daunting expanse towards Tripoli harbor. There, Buvoli encountered his adversaries: seven Blenheim bombers, casting ominous shadows over the Italian fleet below.
Despite the overwhelming odds, with only two Italian biplanes engaged in a seemingly futile pursuit and the Freccia's notable disadvantages against these modern foes, Buvoli's resolve remained unshaken.
In the skies above Tripoli, Buvoli's Freccia became an instrument of aggression. Each dive and turn was a direct assault on the enemy bombers. His guns blazed; a clear challenge to the Blenheims. But Buvoli aimed for more than survival or proving the Freccia's worth; he wasn't content with downing just one of the bombers. There was a fiercer ambition in his heart: to take down all seven…

From what I understand, the Italian pilots wanted the open cockpits. Both the G.50 and M.C. 200 prototypes had enclosed cockpits. Imagine over England during the Battle of Britain flying G.50’s and C.R. 42’s in open cockpits. That must be freezing.

Conditions for the RAF and Commonwealth pilots during the Greek campaign was atrocious. It is said that “Pat” Pattle shouldn’t have flown his last mission as he had a fever of from 102 to 104 F. He wasn’t alone in suffering from dysentery and other ailments. Still they fought as long as they could against the German and Italy airmen. Italian airmen flew from bases around Brindisi in Italy and others not the rugged forward based. The G.50 pilots had a positive handicap in that regards.

A lot of Italian planes are unknown or, better said, forgotten.... Is this due to the reputation that they are not warriors? Reggia Aeronautica count a great number of very courageous pilots and crews despite the reputation of cowardice (really not merited) of Italian armed forces. The problem of all arms of Italy is that they were obsolete or not adapted to the means of the adversary. The planes were underarmed in terms of caliber and quantity, ships were not equipped with modern fire control, armored vehicles were a joke more useful against Ethiopians and Albanians than Greeks or 8th army, a lot of weapons in use dated from WW I.... And there are still guys not understanding the courage you need to fight in such conditions. Italians suffers greatly from a high command not facing reality saying yes to all Mussolini's orders. Italians under command of Rommel have shown what they are capable of even badly equipped
@mikemontgomery2654

I think it more has to do with inferior planes, as compared to 109, Spitfire, Mustang, etc. I also believe that it has to do with numbers of aircraft built. Numbers for Italian aircraft in the war were eclipsed by the other nations and their fighters. You just don’t hear about Italian pilots to the same degree that would with any other nation.

@@keithhawkins7907 Italian have shown in many cases courage like many other people at war. All began with the idea that Italy should have a piece of the cake.... Africa... The use of combat gases against Ethiopians is one of the most disturbing point of these wars with concentration camps in Lybia to punish the people sustaining Omar Mokhtar the freedom fighter. When UK intervenes in Ethiopia they recognize that troops of Duke of Aosta were more than creating problems. It surrenders with honors of war... The many attacks of the frogmen in Gibraltar and Alexandria are unanimously recognized as great pieces of bravery. The role of various Italian units in many Afrika Korps victories was determining. But what can you do with light tanketes, obsolete fighters and poor " managers "? Italian people was divided... they fought WWI with allied and have chosen the wrong side following Mussolini. Further Italian fights during " Republica Sociale of Salo " against partigiani (Italians or Yugoslavs) was murderous for both sides and acts of courage were daily bread...

A lot of the early war Italian planes were just emblems of Fascist Italy than versatile combat aircraft against the Hurricanes and later the Spitfires. The same goes with their battleships, they lacked radar and didn't see much action due to them suffering heavy losses at Taranto and Cape Matapan. Oil shortages also prevented much action. With the CR.42 and MC.200 they would have been very good in a mid 1930s conflict but by the time WW2 broke out they were quite obsolete.

Not quite. In 1941, the *Finns launched their offensive only after the Soviet Union had initiated hostilities. Had the Soviet Union refrained from doing so, Finland would've been stuck. Also, aiding *their German "allies" was never a Finnish war aim, as Hitler soon found out to his chagrin. The Finnish C-in-C, Marshal Mannerheim, steadfastly refused to advance further than what was necessary. The Soviets launched their final and somewhat successful offensive in 1944. When the offensive ground to a halt and Stalin needed all the troops we could muster to reach Berlin before the Western Allies, he was suddenly amenable to peace negotiations with Finland.

Hey Dark Skies, I'm the guy that constantly calls out your errors, must be annoying because you make so many but be a man and respond for once... in the Continuation War Finland and Germany were the initial aggressors and the Soviet Union did not invade Finland again in June 19141 (there were Soviet forces on occupied Finnish territory). You should really do better research or get someone to proofread your scripts at least...

This (German!!)AI-voice and its mistakes are really annoying. The film material is great, but the talking is horrible. It`s not even possible to understand any date, because the AI ist not able to read roman numbers. (First I didn`t mention that it was a german AI-voice but a friendly user informed me about the fact, that this makes a difference. Sorry to the original american speaker, I hope he can read this!)

I understood every single word. You must live in a world where people talk very, very, slowly. You should watch some 1940's comedy movies like 'His Girl Friday', where the dialogue is beautifully written, funny, and delivered extremely quickly, and yet, is still perfectly understandable to normal people. 😆😆😆

@@brianartillery Haha, funny. But serious, I got the german AI-voice and at 10:17 min. it becomes funny fast and sounds like a girl . So, this seems to be a problem with the german AI-voive. But, nethertheless, thanks for your movie-tipp.
