I think all ads ideally should be obsolete, that if you want to buy a product, you just research for it yourself online instead of being interrupted in the middle of a video with an ad for something you most likely won't get.

Johnny I ask you as an Australian to fix this massive error in your map. At 3:33 you show the entirety of the South Eastern part of New Guinea as occupied by the Japanese, including Port Moresby!! This is incorrect! Australians, Papuans and American airmen fought tooth and nail to defend the Owen Stanley Range and the approach into Port Moresby along what was known as the Kokoda Trail - and importantly we didn't fail in this endeavour! It's a disservice to the sacrifice made here to present the map like this. What's even more insulting is that this error is still present even by 10:19 when you're talking about events in 1944 and 1945!! How do you think a good portion of the convoys were raided around Rabaul without the vital airfield in Port Moresby?! This video will be seen by so many people so I implore you to make the necessary changes, please. You have a duty when telling history to get it right, even if you're not specifically mentioning this campaign. If you're making a 'MAPPED' video the maps have to be at least correct. I apologise if I may seem rude, that is not my intention, I am just simply fed up with the history and sacrifice of nearly 10,000 brave men being ignored. Please make the changes Johnny. Accurate maps can be found on the Australian War Memorial Website or alternatively through Dudley McCarthy's official history which is free to access on the Australian War Memorial website.

It's amazing to see how the US and Japan, after a brutal war, have built such a strong relationship. It shows that reconciliation is possible, even after unimaginable suffering. It's also worth remembering the reconciliation between Germany and France. Even after a devastating war, they found a way to move forward together. Thinking about the conflicts in the Middle East, it's clear that both Arabs, Palestinians, and Israelis need a similar path toward peace. We can learn from the past, like prioritizing common goals and building trust through dialogue, to help everyone move towards a more peaceful future. The US-Japan relationship is a beacon of hope, but we must remember that lasting peace requires courage, perseverance, and a willingness to compromise from all sides.
@grubmg3 ай бұрын
I totally agree - but just let it sink in what the US had to do in order to get the Japanese people to reconcile since the Japanese were hell bent on continuing the war even at the expense of their own population. Cutting off supply chains, hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties and two nuked cities. When the world remembers what it takes to get suicidal nations to reconcile it might allow Israel to actually win the war so that we can get there.

In a sense, yes But mainly because America contributed greatly to Japan growing so much economically, but as they do, they hammered that nail down too when it was 'too much' and Japan never recovered So Americans (government) will only be your friends as long as it serves their interests, and discard you as quickly when it no longer does. (They also ended up fuelling the rise of China's economy, but unlike Japan, they won't be able to stop them)
@johndoe92003 ай бұрын
@@RealMikel It was more than just helping you economically, MacArthur rebuilt your whole society. MacArthur punished Japan for its past militarism and expansion by convening war crimes trials in Tokyo. At the same time, SCAP dismantled the Japanese Army and banned former military officers from taking roles of political leadership in the new government. In the economic field, SCAP introduced land reform, designed to benefit the majority tenant farmers and reduce the power of rich landowners, many of whom had advocated for war and supported Japanese expansionism in the 1930s. MacArthur also tried to break up the large Japanese business conglomerates, or zaibatsu, as part of the effort to transform the economy into a free market capitalist system. In 1947, Allied advisors essentially dictated a new constitution to Japan’s leaders. Some of the most profound changes in the document included downgrading the emperor’s status to that of a figurehead without political control and placing more power in the parliamentary system, promoting greater rights and privileges for women, and renouncing the right to wage war, which involved eliminating all non-defensive armed forces.
@johndoe92003 ай бұрын
@@RealMikel By late 1947 and early 1948, the emergence of an economic crisis in Japan alongside concerns about the spread of communism sparked a reconsideration of occupation policies. This period is sometimes called the “reverse course.” In this stage of the occupation, which lasted until 1950, the economic rehabilitation of Japan took center stage. SCAP became concerned that a weak Japanese economy would increase the influence of the domestic communist movement, and with a communist victory in China’s civil war increasingly likely, the future of East Asia appeared to be at stake. Occupation policies to address the weakening economy ranged from tax reforms to measures aimed at controlling inflation. However the most serious problem was the shortage of raw materials required to feed Japanese industries and markets for finished goods. The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 provided SCAP with just the opportunity it needed to address this problem, prompting some occupation officials to suggest that, “Korea came along and saved us.” After the UN entered the Korean War, Japan became the principal supply depot for UN forces. The conflict also placed Japan firmly within the confines of the U.S. defense perimeter in Asia, assuring the Japanese leadership that whatever the state of its military, no real threat would be made against Japanese soil.

My grandfather joined the Burmese Independence Army led by General Aung San. He was trained in Japan and Formosa (Taiwan) before the Japanese invasion of Burma (Myanmar). He used to tell stories on how fearless the Japanese were, they respected eachother, but because of the wrong ideology of the time most of the Japanese soldiers didn't treat the locals faily. If they treated better than the British, the entire country would fight for the Empire of Japan. But, for a time they did, until in 1945 when General Aung San switched sides to the Allies. My grandfather fought the British and within a few years he was fighting the Japanese. If Japan had won we would have our monarchy back, a Burmese Prince was already arranged, but since Japan lost the war and Myanmar got out of the Commonwealth of Nations, the British made sure we plunged into a Civil War without end. We started fighting with Pro British regiments just a few months after independence in 1948. The civil war has not ended.

Being an Indian, we fought for both the Allies as well as Axis. But even the people on the Axis side knew that once Japan won, they have to prepare for the war with Japanese. Interestingly, people who fought for the Axis are way more respected in India than people who fought for Allies. Even more interesting was the people who fought for Allies consider Japanese to be an Asian and thus didn't wanted to fight and also consider World War 2 to an issue away from Indian affairs and thus didn't wanted to participate in it but once they realized that Japanese were brutal. They changed their mind. The opposition to Indian taking part in World War 2 stopped.
The information about the atomic bombings is very one-sided and not entirely correct. The US did not need to throw the bombs to „swiftly“ end the war with Japan, they were very well aware that Japan would have to surrender due to a starving population and no more access to resources. Plus, Japan had already announced their willingness to surrender in return for full immunity of the emperor. The US ignored this though and decided to unnecessarily throw the bombs to 1. test them on humans and 2. globally demonstrate their power, especially to Russia because of the rising conflict with that nation. Russia wasn’t going to join the US in defeating Japan, they were actually supporting Korea who for the first time were out to actively free themselves from the Japanese colonization. The US merely assumed Russia could want a piece of Japan for themselves. This is why the US dropped those bombs, not out of a necessity. That’s how the US got to control Japan and also influence Korea because they basically freed them from a horrendous colonizer. The Korean war (to oversimplify it: communism vs. democracy) was also strongly affected by this influence. I would recommend checking out Japanese and Korean sources on this matter instead of purely relying on the American ones. You can easily access that information in the atomic bomb museums in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and also in Korean history museums and war monuments.

You are not wrong about anything else. But the surrender of Japan that you are talking about was conditional. Japan would surrender under JAPANESE CONDITION: 1. The Japanese main islands will not be occupied by any foreign forces. 2. Preservation of Imperial Japan Institutions 3. They will disarmed themselves. 4. No war crimes or trials will be put against Japan. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan perspective would mean a total annihilation of Japan's imperial family, they feared that the next atomic bomb would fall on Tokyo. And thanks to this bombing, everyone knows the nature of atomic bombs and nuclear weapons. Thus creating what we called MAD. It is the reason why COLD WAR remained cold. The main reason why we haven't seen a total conventional war among Super powers because everyone fear to be nuked.

Johnny, as for WWII between Japan and the U.S., the U.S. must admit to the crime of dropping nuclear bombs on civilians, which it should never have committed just before the end of the war. No matter how much it is war, the act of dropping nuclear bombs on innocent civilians is a war crime. Do not forget this.

I really feel like Soviet’s invasion was the final nail in the coffin. Nuclear bomb was a factor, but Japan was already experiencing so many casualties as you saw in Okinawa and other bombing campaigns which is crazy to think about. But Soviet invasion while you’re severely weakened? Time to give it up and face the music.

What are the soviets going to do, naval invade? Big whoop, they were already expecting that from the US
@novanastalga3 ай бұрын
You are sorely mistaken. The emperor sited the bombs twice in his speech to the nation as the reason for their surrender. The Soviets had no ability to help in the invasion at all, how were they gonna get to Japan? Swim? The Soviet navy was barely floating at that point in the war. With what food? They couldn't feed their frontline troops, how could they feed an expeditionary army?
@dmitrikalashnikov47543 ай бұрын
Sorry the replies to you are so inane, so far. I will only add that the Soviets did not invade the Japanese home islands, nor did they need to consider a naval option. We need not examine all the diplomatic and military records of the time; if we just looked at this Johnny Harris video we're all supposedly watching, we would see that Japan held large swaths of territory on continental Asia right next to the USSR. The Soviets did invade, but they just took Manchuria and thereby "getting to Japan." To "yes and" your actual point, it was not just that the USSR invaded Japan, but up until that point, Japan thought the USSR could help negotiate a conditional surrender as a neutral 3rd party.
@pdpgkeeper3 ай бұрын
If you looked at Soviets’ actions and motives 2-3 decades following their campaign against the Nazis, they were clearly about to go after Japan’s territories beyond what you might be expecting. Japan can’t survive if they are cut off from resources outside of their current borders. Bombing alone would’ve taken longer for them to surrender. Again, crazy to fathom, but just look at the casualty rate when they were not responding to the allied forces’ demands for surrender.

Did the US do some grand strategy and cunning maneuvers to defeat Japan. It was more of a big guy fighting a little guy. Japan did not have the resources or man-power for a long sustained war against the US. Japan could not replace losses as fast as the US. Even if Japan destroyed the aircraft carriers at Pearl Harbor and won the battle of Midway. The US would have just sent more. The war against Japan were 111,606 dead or missing and another 253,142 wounded. Even if the numbers were double that the US could afford to sustain those losses and just keep sending men and war equipment.
wait but pls explain the variety of reasons for the final approach to Japan. that feels extremely geographic and right up your alley.

On July 23, 1941, five months prior to Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt put his signature on an operation plan for the firebombing of Tokyo and Osaka via American volunteers armed with American weapons stationed in China and was in the process of moving assets to China apparently for this end when Pearl Harbor occured. You can find the document at the national archives. Also there's the Mccollum memorandum which lists various aggressive actions to be taken against Japan in line with point 6 of the memorandum: "It is to the interest of the United States to eliminate Japan's threat in the Pacific at the earliest opportunity by taking prompt and aggressive action against Japan" before stating plainly "If by these means Japan could be led to commit an overt act of war, so much the better. At all events we must be fully prepared to accept the threat of war".

Interesting, this piece of info falls into my current views on Pearl Harbor. I shall have to look into it.
@timp.2113 ай бұрын
This lines up with other documents, leaked (or were declassified, idr) a few decades back. Military Intelligence and Roosevelt knew about plans from Japan to make big hits on some 4-5 US territories in their range (including bases somewhere around the Philippines, other islands far south of mainland Japan, AND Pearl Harbor. They wanted a reason to get us more invested in the war, and practically slapped a target on the base in Hawaii. This was chosen as it wasn't too far off to send support as other US bases were, and was 'close to home' enough to get the backing of American citizens to start retaliatory attacks against Japan and bring us into the war officially. Battles went on for years, elections happened, Roosevelt left, and Truman was brought in. Being unawares of the machinations of the previous administration, Truman was left being urged by other politicians and military personnel leftover from Roosevelt to sign the papers that launched the planes to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That said, despite the planetary chess game, these actions did help lead to the ending of the war. And, arguably, saved countless more lives than those that would have been lost in an invasion, or those lost to the bombs, had the war waged on for months and months longer. It *was* inhumane, it was dirty, the US citizens were played just so we could 'test' out new toys out on people... But, it was effective. As Oppenheimer said: "I am become Death". Nations were appalled at the devastation wrought by such weapons. Prompted by this, and his soldiers will to keep fighting despite it, Emperor Hirohito later signed papers of surrender, to save more of his people needlessly dying, helping bring in a close to the war.

This is a mapped war of the Pacific in WWII, not the "Reason Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor". Calling it such undermines the involvement of Western countries in creating Japan's militaristic regime, mainly poor treatment in trade deals, along with unjust compensation for stopping Germany's eastern expansion in WWI. Also, the US and Britain rejected the racial equality proposal made by Japan as an amendment to the Treaty of Versailles. A combination of these factors led to the emperor's seizing power and subsequent expansion into East Asia. If you want a better video giving you more of the "reasons" behind Japan's involvement in WWII, watch this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foLOYZeKh5p8qNU This is a decent video essay mapping the war in the Pacific during WWII, but please title it as such.

Johnny went with the traditional explanation of why US dropped the atom bomb, claiming the US did it because Japan would never surrender otherwise. The new theory is that Japan was going to surrender, and the US dropped the bomb purely to show off. I tend to believe the traditional theory, not because I like America, but because the new explanation would make the US completely psychotic. Like, completely insane.

@@26michaeluk This is too much propaganda. And this is too egregious an alteration of history. Japan has admitted to committing genocide, but the U.S. also committed war crimes. It dropped atomic bombs on civilians, and conducted air raids on Tokyo, etc. International law states that civilians must not be killed. The entry of the Soviet Union into the war was also a violation of international law due to the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact. Please examine how much the Allies have violated international law. To begin with, this war originated from the fact that the President of the United States was anti-Japanese, and we recommend that you make your video after carefully examining such historical events from the Japanese perspective as well. One Japanese war anime has these words. “Enemy or friend, we are all crazy.” This is the correct phrase for both Japan, which took the opportunity of life, and the United States, which dropped the atomic bombs and slaughtered civilians. the entire world knows about the japanese war crimes
??? Midway was a stepping stone to Hawaii, which Japan had hoped would cause the USA to sue for peace, surrendering their Pacific colonies had they lost Hawaii. One must ask themselves why China was a US ally. The US and UK sent aircraft, volunteers and supplies before Japan even invaded any European colony. All of the empires knew exactly what they were doing and were preparing for war loooong before December 6th, 1941. Just because the public did not think war was comming does not mean that the US high command was clueless. They had been planning to fight Japan ever since they won the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese war. The Solomon/Guadal campaign was long and brutal. Supply was an issue for both the USA and Japan. Japan had a conditional unconditional surrender. The royal family would not be charged and become immune from everything that happened. This of course means that it was a conditional surrender. Japan wanted to surrender for a long time but the Americans insisted it be unconditional. No sane Japanese politician would sacrifice their religious leader, god and emperor, so it would never happen. Only under the threat of increased Soviet influence in Asia did the US cave and accept Okinawa is one of the if not the most important island in the Pacific? Hello? Okinawa is important now because it is a US airfield but back then it was not that deep. Iwo Jimo was more more significant as this allowed US bombers to reach Japan for the first time (except Doolittle). Hawaii is an incredibly important logistical and military asset. There is Guam. Any of of the resource rich islands such as Borneo, Sumatra and Java. Okinawa was nothing more than the last step they took that allowed for better bomber escorts. I am not even a historian. These video's have great animations and visuals but the content is lacking in a lot of ways. It also always tries to connect to any current conflict/dispute which almost immediately raises my propaganda flag. Please contact a historian and have them go through the video before uploading.
