After watching the Mariners in those 2 Wild Card games I'm convinced they're the second best team in the AL right now. They have a really good pitching rotation and have even put together a good batting lineup after acquiring Teoscar Hernandez and Kolten Wong. But even their pitching rotation could be one of the best in the MLB if Logan Gilbert and Luis Castillo can keep doing as good as they've been and Robbie Ray gets back to as good as he was in his Cy Young award year. As an Astros fan I can't wait for the new rivalry this year
@heinleinreader
@heinleinreader Жыл бұрын
If Robbie Ray can get back to even 85% of what he was in his Cy Young year he will be dominant. Add to that George Kirby and Logan Gilbert, along with the sheer nastiness that is Luis Castillo, and they have about as good a 1-4 as any team in the game. That includes the Astros. Even their manager said so. And the bag isn't empty after those four either, and I am not referring to Marco Gonzalez and Chris Flexen either. They have three prospects down in the minors that could wind up challenging for a rotation spot within the next couple of years and become what Kirby is now the next great thing. Then there is the versatility of Matt Brash. He still has a huge upside as a potential starter. But I would point out that Wong is probably a two or three season guy at most. This will allow the shortstop they drafted to develop. Perhaps at that point, JP will move to second. Or maybe the kid will do so. But they also have Ford developing on the farm, and he can play catcher, corner infielder, or any outfield spot (although we know he will not be taking over center). Picture him in left Kelenic (assuming that he figures out how to hit major league pitching) in right, Julio in center and Teoscar at DH once he reaches his middle thirties. Add in that they seem to have a knack for coaxing greatness in the bullpen from marginal to above-average pitchers. Kendall Graveman has not been able to replicate what he did in Seattle. He has been decent, even good at times, but he hasn't been that shutdown arm he was in Seattle's bullpen. That is just one example. But they have done this with serviceable but not historically great pitchers. Imagine what they get from Gott who does have a history of being more than a serviceable arm, at times much more. What I see is a rivalry between these two teams that could last for years. Interestingly, Dipoto built the Mariner team by adhering to an almost precise carbon copy of how the Astros were built up at the start of their last rebuild. These two teams are so similar in their makeup. I do legitimately consider them the best rosters in the AL when the entirety of the system is considered. Especially if Cal and Kelenic and the kids continue to mature. If Kelenic doesn't work out in that platoon, there is always Trammell. If he doesn't work Haggerty slots in. Worst case scenario would be Pollock getting a whole lot more plate appearances than they wanted him to have. The point is they have a long line of people to try in that platoon before they get to that eventuality. People complain about the Mariners not making a huge splash in free agency this year. They didn't need to. They are a more complete package than they were last year, and that team took the Astros to the wire. These are just my perceptions and opinions, and I don't insist you applaud, approve of, or even agree with them. I do ask that you respect them, however, as such.

@@heinleinreader An excellent synopsis! Agreed 100% Even having Marco as the #5 for the time being is an excellent place for the team to be in! And Flexen as essentially the #6 in the bullpen?! With 3 great prospects with tremendous upside waiting in the wings, honing their skills?! This is by far the best pitching staff the Mariners have had in franchise history. Plus between Julio, Teo, Geno, and Cal, we could see multiple guys hit 40 homers this year!

definitely don't overlook George Kirby! most of if not all of us Mariners fans think he's got a chance at the cy young award too. and I believe he has added a splitter to his repertoire too. imo the players to keep an eye on are prospects Bryce Miller and Emerson Hancock... either one may just push Mariners to #1 rotation in the AL, and perhaps even mlb. I believe the timeline for either one is some time this year.the other would be Jarred Kelenic, who has struggled so far in his mlb career, but I think he's got potential to be as good as Julio was last season.

I am curious why you didn't mention George Kirby on the starting rotation? I mean he pitched a masterpiece in that ALDS game three wild game and is a very solid 3/4 in a rotation. You definitely need to look into George Kirby as well. 1-4 is absolutely ridiculous for Seattle. And if Bryce Miller is ready this year, then 1-5 is set. Castillo actually upped his slider usage a fair bit last season, while also cutting down on his change usage. It was to the point where he pretty much used his slider (21.1%) and change up (22.2%) evenly. In previous seasons he was typically over 30% with his change up and in the 16-17% range with his slider.

Wait, you're an Astros fan... giving Seattle this much respect? Baseball is a marathon. I hope the Mariners stay healthy, focused, and hungry. Because the teams that already know what it takes aren't trying to give our guys anything. Teams earn the honor of being a playoff team and then there's a very fine line when it comes to winning a World Series. But there can be no mistake about this fact... for Seattle, winning a World Series is possible, so that's the only goal that matters. And I'm not saying "winning it all" is the only way to have a "successful" season... Last year was successful because the team battled until the final out. That's a winning mentality, and if they have that approach again, they might end up winning the final game of the season! Go Mariners!!!
