No one taught me anything about the bible, how to read it, and understand it. So I basically just listen to the gospel in church, read any bible verses that I can read that is available to me through an app or any published version bible. I have read Genesis but not wholly. However I watched the summary videos you have in this channel and in the Bible App. That is why I am very thankful for you guys! May God bless you in everything in your lives!

Keep at it, the Bible let's us learn how God speaks, so we can recognize when He's speaking. Spend some time with God, you dont need to feel anything, He just wants to spend time with you. God loves you man, keep seeking. You will find.

A question others and myself have asked is "If God knew Israel was going to fail, then why would He keep trying with them and not just give up? Wouldn't letting them fail just be cruel?", and stuff along those lines. The answer I got was a reminder from God that He has a grand plan. So if you look at the story of Israel at face value you would think "oh that's horrible, how could a loving God allow such things to happen?", but if you allow God to show you the story from a grander perspective, from His point of view, we can see that their was a purpose to that story of Israel and how they failed. It's an example of what happens when you turn away from God and define good and evil for yourself, a message for the generations of the future. So we have a chance to learn from the mistakes of the past. Truly our God is full of grace, mercy and love. What a wonderful gift He has given us through His word all the way from Adam to Jesus.

Well, it also helps if you think of God's foresight as NOT Him seeing a rigid, unchanging line of events, but more like a tree that branches out, showing every possible future. God is both omniscient AND there is still free will.

This was interesting. Whilst I am a Christian I spent many years studying the OT with Orthodox Jewish friends. Here are some ideas from the Jewish world that connect with the podcast: 1) the torah specifies that the law given to Moses is not a law for all times, people and places. The law given to Moses starting in exodus is a contrast to the rules given to noah and his descendants (everyone) in genesis 9. 2) The 10 commandments contain the seed of all the other commandments. If you read the lists of laws that follow, you will generally see that they follow the same order as the 10, or invert that order - making it feel like subsequent texts are spiralling out of the ten like the petals of a flower. 3) Part of this is that God isn't just giving commandments on Sinai but ways of thinking about justice and the commandments on the mountain. For example in the ten we are told not to murder, later as we go back over the ideas of the ten in the next list we get punishments for murder, and related laws (personal injury). 4) Another way this way of thinking is shown in the text are that the kinds of problems that create the need for the law often come before the law or after it. In a sense we are getting the concept of case law. This is how the previous commandments were applied in this circumstance- and this is the new obligations this application creates when we are thinking about similar circumstances. 5) Case law in the torah illustrates that torah isn't a sort of monolith that appears, and pulls us away from the world, but something that connects us more deeply to it and the God that made it. We can also see this by the way, that in persuit of understanding it, it in a sense invites you to learn ancient languages and do archaeology. 6) The reason that the Torah says that it will look wise to all nations, and it now doesn't so much is that since the bronze age we've been through this flowering process where the (predominantly protestant, but also Catholic, orthodox and Muslim more generally) nations have looked to the torah and its principles (e.g. human equality, human rights, property rights) of it and built their justice systems on it, and those nations have seen huge success and ended up exporting those laws and ideas around the world. 7) Meat and milk: the pagans were clearly boiling a kid in its mothers milk for a reason - so there is some underlying spiritual/symbolic reality there so its not sufficient to say that just because we have discovered who was doing the thing banned, we now know the reason why the ban exists - whilst as a Christian I am happy to eat milk/meet together, I am sympathetic to Jews who see the deep symbolism in this and don't. I really like that your commentor spots that there is a parallel to the story of Israel in torah and the story of Adam and Eve. That makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of other parrallels to the story of Adam and Eve in the torah- but I had never spotted this one.

Careful of that though. You don't want what others think to inhibit God from speaking to you through HIS word. It is always a blessing to have an understanding brother, but a brother does not always understand something the best of any Christian. Sometimes, it's the brothers and sisters who don't speak in places easily reached who have the greatest wisdom.

I love the acknowledgement and revelation around the 41 to 42 minute mark when joking about waking up each morning putting on headset or headphones and having God give us directions for that day. The revelation that just telling us as humans isn’t good enough - we needed the Holy Spirit which is what Yeshua says could only come if he was to ascend to heaven, John 16. We need the Holy Spirit to write God‘s law on heart according Jeremiah 31:33 as well He will put His Spirit in us to cause use to walk in his laws Ezekiel 36:26…. All because as you said Tim… we needed something more than to be told what to do.

Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." (Romans 13:10) "The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14) "If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well" (James 2:8)

Awesome! Nice compile of scriptures. But to fulfill the law with love since we know God is love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 & 1 John 4:8) we must follow this first to get to loving your neighbor like yourself. "Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment." Matthew 22:37‭-‬38 NIV

Even if they love their neighbor, they don't love their enemy. And even if they loved their enemy, they don't love their enemy, because why would you love someone who hates you? Thus we know that sincerity is evidence of the love of God in someone's heart and love toward God.

Love how Tim shares the authors. I can’t take notes fast enough so I buy books. But I can’t read fast enough either. They need to have bibles with blank pages in between chapters for notes. But in classroom I have plenty of paper for notes.

Thanks for the podcast, Jon & Tim. I have really been blessed listening to and watching your material. I appreciate the way you try to condense the Bible message int he videos in such an entertaining way. Your animators are really gifted. Just wanted to respond to what Jon said in the 39th minute of the video where he says God blew the opportunity to reveal himself through a UN-assembly-like headset communicator to the whole human race... : D :D :D I suppose that would have been very convenient lol. However, I am sure Jon would agree with me that it is fairly obvious from the Biblical narrative through the entire Bible that God wants a partnership with people and not the spectator (you do, I view) variety of partnerships. We are not just meant to consume content that other people produce (which so starkly defines today's world for most people - and in my opinion robs the consumers of their God-given industry and imagination) but we are meant to work with God to produce the content like Paul suggests in 1 Cor 3 - we are meant to be God's co-workers, not just His fans and cheerleaders. The fact that the meaning requires effort from us, i think, is part of God's master design. Luke 13:22-24. Thank you for all your good, hard work!

I just got an opinion about God's rules for people back then and how people look back from out time, and think it is archaic... People who think it is archaic should go find the most stubborn, determined animal that they can find. A big stubborn bull.... And get it to do what you want it to do, what it does not want to do.... Good luck with that. So my opinion is God knows what God is up against. And doing what it takes to move stubborn people, a bit at a time. Hoping they will eventually get the idea and fall in line, behind the Good Sheperd. If God wanted to move a stubborn animal, God could just teleport the animal from here to there... But what would the animal have learned? Maybe God wants the stubborn animals to figure out how to get from here to there by their own will, and learn a few things along the way

We also have to realize YAH is just and calls for righteousness. Even in Old Testament - we were put under the Law of Moses to show us the realization of sin and we were deff stubborn. @voidremoved yes, very good thought. Like raising a child. The father can explain the reasons, and make his older child see why the rules are this way, discuss exceptions and alternatives, but it is useless to be Socrates with a young kid, who doesn't want to understand, only wants to be pleased. First the Father needs to tame his ill-mannered children, by means of very strict and at first sight arbitrary rules, until they "all come unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ". (Eph 4.13)

And I just ask the Lord that He has His hand over your life, guiding you according to His plan. I don’t understand how you can read the Old Testament and decide God wasn’t talking to me (a gentile non ancient Israelite). It’s a bit of a leap to decide Jesus didn’t mean what he said when he said he didn’t come to get rid of the law……and he wants us to DO what HIS Father said to do….and somehow conclude that he didn’t mean that….he meant just Israelites.

Sex between male and female is prohibited too if they are not yet married. Pre-marital sex is a huge NO-NO because sex is a gift from God and it is sacred and is supposed to be respected. Pre-marital sex is considered also a form of adultery. Even looking at another male or female lustfully is considered adultery especially if you are not married to that person.

The law is spiritual and not natural so any attempt to understand it and try to follow it from a carnal perspective just leads to the opposite of what the law actually accomplishes in it's perfection

The plan of salvation is the key...first separate a people to produce the Messiah and show the world God's nature. So of course many of the statutes will be to differentiate them from the surrounding cultures. And to demonstrate man's need for a savior and God's hatred of sin. Jesus is the central focus both forward to the end and backward to the beginning which makes sense of everything.

I've come to see the OT as many types & shadows of Jesus Christ. Not only people in the OT but people, places & things. Such as the Lamb, The Rock, The Manna, The Sabbath & The Law. There were many. And Jesus was the SUBSTANCE & reality of most of these. Predictive Programming was in the Bible!!

There are 2 Catagories in the Bible... The Law defines these 2 things. Matthew 22:34 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. [40] On these two commandments, HANG ALL the law and the prophets. NEXT "Table of Contents" for the Torah is the 10 Commandments. Remember, the first 4 have to do with loving God, and the next 6 are about how to Love God or your neighbor as yourself. The Torah gets into the nitty gritty of this is defined. Without this, we see many in the Progressive Gospel redefining what "love" and "sin" any way they want today! The WHOLE Bible is given for our teaching...

Just have to state something mildly obvious, but we "civilized", "enlightened" Westerners might be be more technical but we are still just as savage...just ask a tiny human in utero. Oh yeah, that's right, they can't speak, like we privileged image bearers who are free from danger. Nevertheless, thanks to our enlightened, Western patriarchs for clearing our consciences. At least we're not like the true savages, sacrificing children for future blessing and relief from current burdens...right?

Jesus Christ already fulfilled the laws (old testament) new testament "gospel (good news(( the kingdom of heaven)) is at hand, 2 new commandment I give you 1 love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your strength, all your soul and with all your mind 2 love your neighbors as yourself, these two hang the law and prophets.

What do you think of the scripture in the 2nd half of Matthew 23:3? Where Jesus says don't do as the pharisees do because they don't do what they say! If Jesus " finished"" His work, does that mean we can ignore His command in Matt23:1-3 too?

At about 16 minutes you make a case the the Torah or law started at Mt Sinai. However, the Hebrew word first shows up with in the promise to Abraham and shows he was already following the Most High’s laws. Genesis 26:4-5 (ESV) 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws (torah).” Doesn’t this suggest Sinai was not the start of God's laws? Moreover, the sacrifice of the firstborn by Able, the clean and unclean animals in the Flood account and even the instruction in the garden not to eat shows the pre-existence of laws. The fact is, יהוה God doesn’t disclose to us in His word the “start” of the Torah but does suggest that these laws are how he’d behave if He walked as us in the earth. We’re told to walk like Yeshua walked 1 John 2:6

How would you interpret this ? (Rom 5:13) for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

@@Eben_Haezer great passage and so relevant to a discussion on the Laws of God mentioned In the Bible (or not mentioned in this case) and this thought from Paul makes the point that just because law or rules aren’t specifically mentioned, of course there was law before Mt Sinai. Let’s look at it. “for sin” (lawlessness;1 John 3:4 “Sin is lawlessness”) indeed (of course) “was in the world before the law was given” (specifically he means the law at Mt Sinai: we know this based on the context of “from Adam to Moses” mentioned in the next verse), “but” (Paul uses “but” to create a contradiction in the audience's mind) “but sin is not counted where there is no law” (so if sin can’t be counted where there is no law (which is obvious, I can’t count disobedience against my children if I never told them what to obey) then how was Sin in the world before Sinai?). (Rom 5:13) for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted wher e there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. He goes on to say “death reigned” (and the wages of sin is death) “from Adam to Moses”. He even explains death reigned over (different) sinning that was not like the transgression of Adam (sin that wasn't mentioned - sin that wasn't “don’t eat from the tree"). So how could death reign from sinning from no violation of any law unless there “WAS” law before the giving of the Law from Mt Sinai? This is Paul’s whole point. Sin, law, lawlessness and death all started with one man, Adam, not Moses and all Life and redemption comes from one man, Yeshua. See, there Was Law before Sinai. He proves that there was lawlessness (sin) different than Adam’s sin that caused death well before Mt Sinai and that it "was" counted against them because they died. It’s obvious I think when he says that Sin can’t be charged if there is no law - rhetorically he saying “of course there was law, people died didn’t they?” What is really interesting is his point that they died from Sin that wasn't even mentioned - it was sin unlike Adam, they didn't die because they ate from the tree of good and evil, they died from some other sin and again, it's not mentioned what sin but they "Did" die from some sin - some kind of "lawlessness". You can't argue from Silence, so just because specific laws aren't mentioned, it doesn't mean they didn't exit, the evidence is Paul's point and mine also. Abel knew what to sacrifice, Noah knew what was clean and Paul said people died from Sin and Death - the "Law of Sin & Death" did reign from Adam so God's Torah must of been in existence to count that sin & death against them.

God doesnt use his laws to transform Your Heart! Law was given to condemn flesh and blood for attempting desiring wanting to be Gods on bases of knowing good and evil and God contributed to that!!!! Gave all what is good or evil to condemn flesh...

What is "the reason the Old Testament laws exist" ? First off, the term "Old Testament" is inaccurate, for there is NO "Old Testament" and "New Testament", as if the Bible is divided into "parts" or two separate books, with the designation of "the Old Testament" (and "New Testament") coming from the inaccurate reading at 2 Corinthians 3:14 in the King James Bible, calling the Mosaic Law covenant "the old testament", instead of rightfully calling it "the old covenant", whereby the apostle Paul used the Greek word diatheke (that is used 33 times in the Greek text, as at Matt 26:28; Mark 14:24; and at Acts 3:25, in which the King James Bible got it right at Acts 3) that means "properly, a disposition, i.e. a contract" or "covenant", and not "testament". The Hebrew word berith´, whose etymology is uncertain, appears over 280 times in the Hebrew Scriptures or the first 39 "books" of the Bible; more than 80 of these occurrences are in the five books of Moses called "the Torah" or "Law". It was added to make transgressions manifest, until the offspring should arrive to whom the promise had been made; and it was transmitted through angels by the hand of a mediator."(Gal 3:19) The Mosaic Law covenant brought to light that the Israelites were sinners, in need of a redeemer or ransomer. At Romans 7, Paul says: "Is the Law sin ? Certainly not ! Really, I would not have come to know sin had it not been for the Law. For example, I would not have known covetousness if the Law had not said: “You must not covet.” But sin, finding the opportunity afforded by the commandment, worked out in me covetousness of every sort, for apart from law sin was dead. In fact, I was once alive apart from law. But when the commandment arrived, sin came to life again, but I died."(Rom 7:7-9) The Mosaic Law exposed the Israelites as really guilty of death, so that there was a vital need for someone equal to Adam before he rebelled, a perfect man replacing the once perfect man Adam, to buy back what our forefather Adam lost for his offspring, to enjoy everlasting life on a paradise earth.(Gen 1:28-31; Luke 23:43; see 1 Cor 15:45, in which Jesus is called "the last Adam", that is an exact exchange as obedient mankind's "father" for the rebel Adam) At Galatians 3, Paul further writes that "if a law had been given that could give life, righteousness would actually have been by means of law. But the Scripture handed all things over to the custody of sin, so that the promise resulting from faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those exercising faith."(Gal 3:21, 22) Paul now says: "So the (Mosaic) Law became our guardian leading to Christ, so that we might be declared righteous through faith. But now that the faith has arrived (in 29 C.E, when Jesus was baptized by John), we are no longer under a guardian (or Mosaic Law)."(Gal 3:24, 25) The Mosaic Law covenant is now "obsolete" (Heb 8:13), having been fulfilled by Jesus (Matt 5:17), nailed to the stake with Jesus (Col 2:14), and is NO longer valid, with its some 600 laws and regulations, such as the Sabbath that many still observe.

Correction - God's commandments are concentrated in 4 books of the Torah - there are no Torah commandments in Genesis, its all about covenants.

So let me get this straight, the most high, creator of heaven and Earth gave people instructions to live by, but there are Christians today who are saying that's not for us, it was only for those people back then... Pray to The father and ask him to use his spirit to guide us into understanding what commandments we must be obeying. Use only the scriptures and the leading of the Holy Spirit to do so. Then test that against what men are saying we should do. Because what your pastor says or what random people at this Bible project say is not going to be evidence enough when God ask you why didn't you obey my laws.... Why didn't you keep my Sabbath why didn't you keep my feast days why didn't you obey my dietary laws...

Galatians 3:16 would say otherwise..... 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”[i] meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, INTRODUCED 430 YEARS LATER does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

@@joshkaye5303 the law was established in Eden. Verse 16 does in fact say his seed, singular meaning ALL who excepts Jesus Christ as their savior will fall under this meaning. The plurality comes when Abraham was told that the stars will equal all the people who come to fold (being his seed). Once Jesus came to the cross it did away with the ceremonious law's but, not the weekly Sabbath! Sorry my friend, I used to think that until I tried to find all this in the bible. I found that everything is twisted to suit the the sinful needs of man. This is why God's ten commandments are still valid. Is God's law written in your mind and your heart? God's laws were established even before He created Eden, as He said Lucifer sinned. God simply revealed them to Adam and Eve and instructed them with His laws after they were created.

Every Law written in the old testament is renewed in the new testament. Some stayed the same and some were changed. Especially about food. Try reading the book of Timothy.
