As someone who lived in Milan during the period I can tell you this has been heartbreaking to watch. The city loved him but was truly hurt by his “mercenary” comments about Ultras. Ultras are very much the heartbeat of every AC Milan game and is synonymous with the club and has huge cultural roots in its origin itself. Maldini was a superstar and a footballers footballer and Ultras were supportive of him from when he was very young and he was loyal to AC Milan and never left - in the end it was incredibly sad that things ended this way
