Very important in fact. I think Mike, El and Will are going to be the main trio for the final season. I think he's the key to beating the flayer once and for all. He's probably gonna get some powers of some sorts like Bran stark. Maybe he can warg in the demogorgons, etc and even the flayer itself to spy on Henry's plans. The final battle will be a giant D&D playfield after all to resemble Will's painting with the dragon being the flayer. Would be cool to see Will take a huge role in season 5.

The painting was definitely about Will’s feelings towards Mike but played it off as Eleven’s. A point not mentioned here is during this scene Will says El asked him to paint it basically commissioning it, but in the opening scene Eleven talks about Will’s painting and she has no idea what it is and thinks it may be for “a girl he likes”

Do you remember in Season 3, Mike and Will were arguing in Mike's carport and it was raining. They were arguing about Eleven and Mike said to Will, "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" I think this is also significant for this theory.

I haven't seen many people comment on this yet, but when Mike is telling Eleven in the bathtub in episode 9 that his life began the day she came into his life, that it was the best day of his life to meet her... well, what else happened that day? Will vanished, presumed dead. Will, who's in love with him, sitting right next to him, listening to him give this love confession to someone else and waxing poetic about one of the worst days of his life. The angst is overpowering.

It's possible, people in real life can be that oblivious ! I was watching a musical with two of my best friends, one seated next to me and one in front of me. I started to genuinely cry because of the story who reminded me of my own life struggles. I tried to be as quiet as I could but I was sniffling from time to time. My friend who was next to me noticed and conforted me but the one right in front of me didn't. Well he only noticed the noise I was making and did not hesitate to tell me that it really bothered him during the half-show pause... He apologised later that evening but still, it hurt. So yes, it's possible.

Being that Will went through a lot of trauma, has anyone considered the fact that maybe Will just doesn't want to grow up and he doesn't want his best friend growing up without him either. The only one of the young kids that hangs out with the older generation in the show habitually is Dustin with Steve.

In the painting, the monster, it is Eleven.. Will knows that because he is attached. Eleven will eventually realize this. Mike will have to be the one to stop her and Will will die in the process.

I think Will is Vecna's phylactery. Meaning he will have to sacrifice himself to destroy Vecna once and for all. I don't think he will tell Mike his true feelings, not out loud. I think they will share a scene before or during Will dying and will be an unspoken thing they both finally understand.

It was so painful (and relatable) that Will was so empathic, kind and caring towards Mike and had just said such beautiful things about Mike and Mike couldn't even mumble a "Thanks" or even better; finally give him a real hug again. He couldn't even meet/give him the bare minimum, much less be responsive to Will being outwardly emotional. I hella feel for Will. He's gone through so much in his short life and has seemingly felt so alone through most of it. 💔

Mike’s character has massively fallen off I’d say since he is completely fixated on eleven and not really his friends anymore. Not like he was in the first couple of seasons. Will has developed feelings for him and is frustrated with himself for this confusing point in his life. This only makes him more vulnerable and more of a target for vecna to exploit.

When a new relationship happens, younger people tend to fixate a lot on that relationship. Now, it’s not only a new relationship, but the first relationship Mike has ever had with a girl. That would make him fixate even more on her than his friends. It’s not like he hasn’t been there for his friends or doing what’s necessary, but it’s very realistic writing with how Mike is behaving in regards to Will and Eleven. Eventually the fixation fades and normal interactions will resume. I actually think Mike has done very well not being completely obsessed with eleven and still maintaining his relationship with his friends, even expanding it via the Hellfire club.

There is significant evidence to deduce that Will is gay however he might not fancy Mike. HE LOVES MIKE. He loves Mike as his best friend and you gotta admit that friendship heartbreak is real. First of all he’s dealing with trauma (upside down) on his own in a different city far from his friends.. With only a memory of his best friend who always supported him but never wrote to him when he moved. His brother became distant, he tried to be there for 11 but he needed someone to be there for him too, he needed his best friend. Trauma and loneliness is not a good combo. Now combine that with abandonment. Mike didn’t care for him when he arrived… even forgot his birthday. And found himself being a third wheel. That sucks. Here is Will suffering real mental health issues but knowing that atleast he has his best friend ..now best friend shows up and wouldn’t care less. Instead its even Will giving Mike all the emotional support when it’s meant to be the other way around. That is so draining. Many people interprete this as a case of unrequited love. I agree that it comes in different forms. You can be there for your sister and be invested in her life but when your time comes, she’s not there for you. That is unrequited love, and heartbreak as well comes in many forms. We all need love in this world, sometimes that love could be pure friendship with support and safety. Not everything is sexual. Another Interpretation; The painting. Remember Will used to draw things he saw from the Mind flayer. Mike with the heart sign is leading the battle against the dragon. As everyone has speculated, this might foreshadow Will as the monster dragon in the S5….and since Mike has his heart, he will be the key to defeating the monster.

Wills been giving Mike very unsubtle hints about how he feels about his friend but Mikes either too oblivious or preoccupied with what’s going on to notice it. Jonathan noticed how upset Will was when they were in the van and must have figured out what his brother was inferring which is why Jonathan told Will that nothing will change the fact that they’re brothers and that he loves him.

@@JoshDoes Thing is, I'm not sure Mike is gay or bisexual or straight. But I do know that he doesn't have any romantic feelings for Will...It's Eleven. It's always been Eleven. The whole point of Mike's speech at the end was an indicator of the fact that Eleven is like the shining light of his life, someone he has loved and admired since he was a child and I don't think there's anything driving them apart. What is probable is that Will and Mike do have an emotional confrontational about it and in the end, Mike finally acknowledges and understands his feelings but is unable to return them. And I feel like both of them will make peace with that situation. Anyway, they've much better chemistry as friends

Watching that scene with Will's monologue in the car brought me to tears. Noah Schapp hit the nail on the head with how it was delivered, and script was written beautifully. Being gay / coming out is so difficult and isolating at times especially when young, so everything in the monologue was so relatable and heartbreaking. One of my favourite moments in the whole show hands down.

Now I can't help but wonder if Will and Jonathan's scene where Jonathan tells Will "It's Okay, I will always love you no matter what" is a true depiction of the Duffer brother's brotherly relationship. I love looking at others theories to see if they say anything good. Most the time its terrible dumb theories. But sometmes I get one from someone that could happen. Like yours. Because that could happen. It would be a bitter sweet moment. But more importantly I feel Will has a bigger part to play season 5. No one has asked the question yet...Why Will? As of now it is clear he was taken in season one for a reason and kept alive for a reason. Then season 2 Vecna as we now know wanted to use the mind flayer particle in him as a host so that he would be able to control him. But why Will? Vecna is no random villain. He has a reason for everything he does. There is something between Vecna and Will and it could lead into Will sacrificing himself to beat Vecna for good.And maybe not. But I think your theory is a good one to consider.

Maybe doing something to him that we don't know yet? I know there's a comic(?) that describes his time but is that canon? Will is a really shy character that often will bottle up his emotions and keep them hidden from everyone out of fear of how they would react if he told them how he really felt. He did this the most in season 2 when Joyce was trying to figure out what was wrong with him and he kept saying he was fine when he wasn’t because he didn’t her to freak out until she finally discovered it for herself. He’s extremely selfless and will always put other people ahead of himself even when it effects him negatively.

Will basically lost his best friend to Eleven, whom he loves as a sister; and his tribe, Lucas and Dustin. That’s a lot for anyone. So he may be in love with Mike, but he also may be longing to say something about being gay, but also afraid of being rejected. Will knows perfectly well that Mike isn’t gay, that doesn’t change feelings. But it may even be something more than that. It may be as simple as belonging. Something Henry Creel never had. In the end it may be his secret weapon, or a weapon Vecna could use against him. This seems like big time setup for season 5, and the final conflict with Vecna.

As far as the scene where Mike said "It's not my fault you don't like girls", I had friends growing up that matured faster and were interested in girls sooner than others. It could also be that Will is realizing that his tight knit friendship with Mike has changed. Will is now the third wheel, and Mike is more concerned with El than their friendship. You grow up spending all your time with your best friend, and then they fall for a girl and that friendship somehow seems diminished. It is very hard being a young teen, and being with your best friend is all that matters in the world. And then they fall in love, and it breaks your own heart because you lost something. I was the same age as will and Mike in 1986, and went through similar growing up pains.

i also noticed that im Mike's monologue to El to help her escape Vecna's hold on her, he says he day that he found her in the woods was the day that his life started. but that day was the day after he lost Will to the upside down, which make Will even more emotional in the scene. I don't think Mike literally meant this, as he described to Will in the van scene that him and El meeting wasn't fate or destiny. It was Will's words that "El" (Will) would fall apart without him that caused Mike to say this to El so she would get the strength to break free. I can understand if Mike was just worried about El and wasn't in the right state of mind in the van scene, but for him to instantly change his mind on that he loves her and meeting El was when his life started was quite interesting to see, given Will gave him the blueprint on what to say in the van, even though Will was actually referring to himself.

Also, he is still psychically connected to the hive mind, so his emotions are being heavily influenced by what is taking place in that realm. I understand why you feel this way about the interpretation of Will but I have a feeling things are much more complicated than that. Will is a very sensitive person and he is also sharing the feelings that come from Vecna as well. Many times you often see Will in the background watching Eleven or the relationship with Eleven and Mike…kind of reminds me how you would see the mind flayer hovering in the upside down watching the snow ball at the end…Vecna is upsessed with El and naturally with Els relationship with Mike, I think that Will feels those emotions as well along with his own emotions also. So it’s much more complicated than comparing Wills actions to a normal human. Will was changed from being in the upside down and he has never came back…whatever things are going on with Will are a result from his change from being in the upside down.

I think Stranger Things is doing a good job of showing just how hidden gay people have to be, especially in the 80s. Some people are calling it queer baiting and I simply don't agree because it's realistic to what a lot of people go through. Not everyone gets to be open, not then, not now. Robin doesn't want to risk telling Vicky (she only told Steve because they had just been drugged and they bonded during a moment of crisis. She still doesn't tell anyone else afterwards) and Will KNOWS Mike doesn't feel the same. He knows Mike loves El and is straight. He doesn't want to make his friend uncomfortable. To put this into historical context, during the 1980s we were in the height if HIV and AIDS. Gay men were dying in huge numbers and many of the were alone and estranged from their families. Anita Bryant and the "Moral Majority" were pushing a homophobic agenda. If you want to understand, watch the movie "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington - which helped change the conversation around AIDS when it came out (1993). The show touched on the satanic panic of the 1980s. It wasn't just gaming. Again right wing culture deeply embraced this panic and attached it to anything they opposed including homosexuality. A young gay person growing up in the 1980s would have been reasonably afraid of coming out of the closet at that time.

Totally a tough situation for Will...especially in the year setting. I think you are spot on. I think while the end of the season pointed to Will still having a connection to the upside down and the mind flayer, we'd be fooling ourselves to think that was the extent of it. He's clearly got feelings for Mike. Poor boy. It's hard enough having feelings for someone who isn't at all interested in you. (Story of my life.) I can't imagine those feelings also being homosexual, where telling the truth also puts a risk on the friendship itself. Damn. Is it better to suffer in silence or speak out and risk everything? Bah!

Doesn't it always put risk on the friendship? How close would you be comfortable being with someone who you know fancies you but you don't feel the same way? You'd want to keep them at arm's length so they don't get the wrong idea. I think that's true regardless of the sex of the two people involved.

It becomes very uncomfortable for me as I get highly anxious around them and I'm usually the one that pulls away. On the flip side, there is a guy in my neighborhood who is gay and has made it very clear he likes me. I'm not interested for obvious reasons (I'm not gay), but I frequently go out with him as a friend. It doesn't bother me at all. If it makes him uncomfortable, he doesn't show it...and he keeps inviting me out. I guess it's just different for everyone.

@@cphine I have a gay friend like that but I knew him when I was already quite mature. I know I was not as mature in dealing with gay men chatting me up when I was much younger, but then none of those were friends so I can't say for certain how I would have dealt with it. Teenage years are full of insecurity and that means emotional issues are often navigated badly.

Same, I feel like anything that Vecna has been tied to his subconscious then becomes a part of making him able to transcend the mental form and take over any physical form because of that connection that will still feels to Vecna, I feel like if Vecna lost his body entirely he could very well come back through a subconscious link to someone their by taking over their body for good. As if it was his own.

I always thought that it's about losing Mike as a friend but after your video.. Well.. Probably it's indeed about that Will has feelings for Mike. I have to say, Will is really relatable for me. I recently just realised how things changed, how it's not anymore as it was in the past and how it was used to be all the time.. All the years before between me and a friend. That he, actually both of us, got older, but I was like stuck in old behaviors and the old point of view how things work between us two. I realised, that this behavior and this point of view is outdated and it won't work any longer between us if I keep going and don't change.

I almost cried watching the scene in the car where will were talking to mike, especially seeing Jonathan almost crying realising how Will really felt. And then the scene between Will and Jonathan absolutely broke me. Will’s crush is so obvious the entire season with the painting and him not liking the girl who was interested in him from the start, and then every single time he looked at Mike it was like he was in a trance or something

@@belpop We learn this season that music is what saves people. Like vecna's father and Max. Alone in the upside down, Will was always singing that 'Should I stay or should i go' tune, which played into how his family saved him. @Christina I think Will was a chance encounter. Eleven made the first gate, the monster escaped, encountered Will on his bike in the woods. Now its different because Vecna managed to get Eleven's powers and opened a bunch of gates, so more monsters etc, so harder to survive. This was no the case at Will's time. Rewatching season 1 with what we know now, should answer the 'how'.

I'd like to mention what no one is pointing out in all of the videos about Will is how everyone keeps saying the day 11 came was the best day for everyone. but for Will it was the worst day ever. I think while lost in the upside down he had no one to rely on and was just focusing on surviving. When he was able to come back 11 pretty much REPLACED him in the group. she wasn't just the new one but came the same day he left and took over the hole of his absence. when Will did come back he didn't have the group he left. they grew up and faced challenges where he struggled to just survive. He was frozen not growing mentally and didn't really have the same support when he did come back. no one really noticed him coughing up worms or really worry about him until it effected THEM. he was always pushed aside for some one or something else. It's not just a love triangle but seeing 11 as the one who stole his best friend from him. You see through the entire series that everyone has some one to rely on but Will. He is always a lone person. a person out of time from the time lost. he even said he didn't want to grow up, and just play D&D in the basement again because that is the only time he felt like he was really part of a group. the only time NOT alone.

It's amazing this video has to exist. Will is gay. Sure, they didn't say it outright, but it's clear given this scene and Will's scene with Jonathan. He's closeted and confused about what he is, but it's clear that he has strong romantic feelings for Mike. Hmm, read my comments. While I strongly agree that the evidence supports the hypothesis that Will is gay, there is another possibility also supported by evidence - even some of the same scenes. That possibility is that Will is suffering PTSD and is unable to let go of childhood. Also, Noah Schnapp has suggested that the Duffers want it to be up to interpretation. We may never find out for absolutely certain and both hypotheses could be true at the same time.

EL said will was painting and she didn't know what it was. He painted that for Mike himself i don't think he was going to right out say it but he brought it to the airport to give him. However Mike was all about EL and didn't notice it was his birthday even.
